Multi-layered compositions creating overly large compressed files

Hi there community!
FCP HD 4.5
I have a composition that involves 3 layers of video and 4 audio tracks. It is only short but when trying to compress a sample for the web I'm having difficulty getting the file size down to something reasonable, like between 3 - 5 MB as with my other clips. I've tried exporting the project in uncompressed format and then trying to compress from that single track file, but FCP treats it just the same as the original. The original has a few effects applied and I also modified the composition mode, so it is somewhat complex. I've been trying to compress to quicktime movie using the following:
video:
H.246
size 400 x 300
quality: medium
frame rate: 15 fps
encode: multi-pass - best
audio:
mpeg-4
Resulting file size is 17 MB for a 1 minute clip. Way too high.
These settings are ideal for my other stuff, but this clip is more complex. I'm a professional preparing video content for the web. What is the nack for squashing a complex project without losing too much quality?

You should be using Compressor (moreover, you should upgrade 4.5 to 5.1 before the offer runs out).
Prior to Compressor 2 (and if I want QT 6 compatible quicktimes), I use Sorenson Squeeze. At high quality, I generally get 640x480 resolution at 4MB for 30 seconds. Or I use Compressor and H.264 LAN.
Both do a far superior job to straight export from FCP.

• How to set SAXParser at command-line interface to create a large XML file

Hi,
I am trying to create a large XML file (more than 50 MB) by selecting from Oracle database but failed because of "out of memory" error. According to "Oracle XML Developer Guide", we should use SAXParser to parsing a large XML file. But there is no example to show how to set SAXParser at command-line
Following is what I use to get xml files. It works only when the file is small.
java OracleXML getXML -DateFormat -withDTD -rowsetTag PO_HDR -conn
"jdbc:oracle:oci8:@server_name" -user "ID/password" "select * from table_name"
When I set SAXParser at the way below,
java oracle.xml.parser.v2.SAXParser OracleXML getXML -DateFormat -withDTD -rowsetTag PO_HDR -conn
"jdbc:oracle:oci8:@server_name" -user "ID/password" "select * from table_name"
it failed with the error message: "In class oracle.xml.parser.v2.SAXParser: void main(String argv[]) is not defined"
Does anyone know how to solve the problem? I'll be appreciated very much for your help.
Yi

here are my ideas.
register the xml schema.
using xmldom, generate the desired xml output and return as xmltype.
then you can use something like this to check.
declare
xmldoc xmltype ;
begin
-- populate xmldoc from you xmldom function
-- validate against XML schema
xmldoc.isSchemaValid(schema_url, root_element);
if xmldoc.isSchemaValid = 1 then
--valid schema
else
--invalid
end if;
end

• OSB - Iterating over large XML files with content streaming

Hi @ll
I have to iterate over all item in large XML files and insert into a oracle database.
The file is about 200 MB and contains around 500'000, and I am using OSB 10gR3.
The XML structure is something like this:
<allItems>

.....

.....

.....

.....

.....

</allItems>
Actually I thought about using a proxy service with enabled content streaming and a "for each" action for iterating
over all items. But for this the whole XML structure has to be materialized into a variable otherwise it is not possible!
More about streaming large files can be found here:
[http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E13159_01/osb/docs10gr3/userguide/context.html#large_messages]
There is written "When you enable streaming for large message processing, you cannot use the ... for each...".
And for accessing single items you should should use an assign action with a xpath like "$body/allItems/item[1]";
this works fine and not the whole XML stream has to be materialized.
So my idea was to use the "for each" action and processing seqeuntially all items with a xpath like:
$body/allItems/item[$counter]
But the "for each" action just allows iterating over a sequence of xml items by defining an selection xpath
and the variable that contains all items. I would like to have a "repeat until" construct that iterates as long
$body/allItems/item[$counter] returns not null. Or can I use the "for each" action differently?
Does the OSB provides any other iterating mechanism? I know there is this spli-join construct that supports
different looping techniques, but as far I know it does not support content streaming, is this correct?
Did I miss somehting?
Thanks a lot for helping!
Cheers
Dani

Hi Dani,
Yes, according to me this would be the best approach. You can use content-streaming to pass this large xml to ejb and once it passes successfully EJB should operate on this. If you want any result back (for further routing), you can get it back from EJB.
EJB gives you power of java to process this file and from java perspective 150 MB is not a very LARGE data. Ensure that you are using buffering. Check out this link for an explanation on Java IO Streams and, in particular, buffered streams -
http://java.sun.com/developer/technicalArticles/Streams/ProgIOStreams/
Try dom4J with xpp (XML Pull Parser) parser in case you have parsing requirement. We had worked with 1.2GB file using this technique.

• PDF export from ID6 creates disproportionately large PDF files

When I create a PDF export from ID6 the resulting file is always disproportionately large, even though the documents contain no images, are mostly text, all graphics are vector graphics and the document is one colour. Then, after trying lots of different settings, including the lowest possible, I cannot keep the file size reasonable.
I have also tried reducing the file size from within Acrobat 9, but this doesn't have any effect.
The only thing that works is exporting the same document as an EPS, importing the EPS into Illustrator, and then saving that EPS as a PDF from illustrator. This creates a document which has, I think, the correct file size in proportion with its content.
eg., 2 page ID6 doc to PDF = 12.8mb. Then the same 2 page doc saved as 2 separate EPSs, converted to PDFs and then combined as 1 document = 708kb!
This seems to be the only way of reducing the size of the PDF, but as you might expect, creates a huge bottleneck in my workflow.
Can anyone help?

You could try adjusting the transparency settings or the image settings.
Be certain you know what you're adjusting before you attempt this, though.
I've had some luck with just going to: Document > Reduce File Size...
I'll let some of the "real" experts chime in on this because I really don't
want to lead you down the wrong path here.
Thanks!

• Why my previous after effects videos (MP4) cannot be imported as multi-layered composition?

Hi,
As I go throught your tutorials, I cannot figure out how to edit previous after effect videos. My imported videos can only be imported as footage. Therefore, I cannot edit them in After effects. How can you help?
Thank you!
Berthony

Start here. Once you render a video it's a video. If you want to do more with the composition then you have to open the After Effects Project file you used to create the composition. It's the same way with any video editing app. You render the video and it's done. If you want to edit the pieces you have to open the program used to create the edit and edit it again.
Really basic stuff here. You have to go through the baiscs or you will be wasting your time.

• RH 7 creates impossibly large RTF file

I'm trying out RH 7 on XP, using Word 2003. It works fine for
small files. When I try to import a large (27 MB) Word file with
many graphics, RH creates an RTF file that is 2.1 GB. I don't have
the time to wait to see if Word can save it. Is there a workaround
for this?

Here's a more detailed description of what I see; perhaps it
will evoke some response.
1. In RoboHelp for Word, I import a large Word document,
saving it in the project directory.
2. I am asked whether I also want to save the document
template. I do.
3. Graphics are converted.
4. The "Converting style to topic" message appears repeatedly
until Word runs out of memory. I am warned that no "undo" will be
possible; I answer "Yes" to proceed anyway.
5. The conversion apparently proceeds. But a check of CPU
usage says there’s nothing happening. I must cancel both Word
and RoboHelp.
Left behind is the .doc file (which was a huge 27 MB) and the
.rtf file RoboHelp created (which is 77 times bigger still).

• 'Out Of Memory' issue and over large Project File...

Hi everyone, my issue is a common one but yet to find out reasons why after trying many suggestions.
I am working in Final Cut Pro 6 on an edit 35 minutes long. It's a holiday video edit of a snowboarding trip filmed on GoPro HD and a small handy Sony Handycam. All rushes are transcoded to ProRess 422. I have cut the edit and doing the final touches with the colour using Synthetic Appertures Color Finesse 3. My project file starts off at a mere 17MB before colour grading/correction from what I can tell seems pretty normal. By the time I get to around half way my Project ile has increased greatly to over 70MB, FCP becomes slow and unstable then I start to get crashes and reloads of the project take around 15 minutes or more to open. This seems quite a jump to me once grading starts?
Originally I did have around 6 sequences of footage (one for each day of shooting on holiday) where each contained all the usable clips I could possibly use for the edit. Then a Master sequence where I would paste my desired clips to for trimming and editing to music. (all music in AIFF)
I have deleted all folders in the browser that arent in use now and the only sequence I have now is the master, nothing else at all! No Motion graphics but some text at the start of the edit, nothing animated. No stills, but I do have some freeze frames but I'd say no maore than 20 over the whole 35 minutes. I have deleted unused render files and trashed preferences.
I did see somewhere that someone suggested splitting the edit in to two different projects? There wasnt a clear explanation of this.
I'm running....
iMac 24 inch - early 2009
2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
8GB 1067 DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce 9400 256 MB
OS X10.8.2
Hope this is all you need to help me get this edit completed and exported off. Any more info you need just ask!
Thanks in advance.
GK

Hi Nick
I have already successfully rendered 20 minutes of the project with no issues. As the project file has increased it has become troublesome. Beach balling when pasting the colour finesse attributes to my next clip for instance.
When I attempt to render now its instantly fails with a "Out Of Memory" error and eventually crashes FCP.
Thanks.

I've finally solved it!
I downloaded the following jre from blackdown:
jre118_v3-glibc-2.1.3-DYNMOTIF.tar.bz2
It's the only one that seems to work (and god, have I tried them all!)
I've no idea what the DYNMOTIF means (apart from being something to do with Motif - but you don't have to be a linux guru to work that out ;)) - but, hell, it works.
And after sitting in front of this machine for 3 days trying to deal with Oracle's, frankly PATHETIC install, that's so full of holes and bugs, that's all I care about..
The one bundled with Oracle 8.1.7 doesn't work with Linux redhat 6.2EE.
Don't oracle test their software?
Anyway I'm happy now, and I'm leaving this in case anybody else has the same problem.
Thanks for everyone's help.

• Large Sample Files for Crystal Reports

Hi, I have an issue where trying to view large Crystal Reports files causes the Web Viewer to crash. Does anyone know where I can find a sample Crystal Reports file larger than 20MB that I can use to recreate this problem? Thanks.

hi Shannon,
you can quickly create a large report file size by putting a bunch of large images (using Insert > Picture) in the details section of a report that contains several thousand records.

• Lion's App for compressing files.

I accidently deleted Lion's built in App for compressing and expanding files.
The one that does what "Stuffit" did in the old days.
Is there a way to reinstall it without doing a complete Lion reinstall?
I can't recall the name of the Application however i think it started with a "A".
Thanks.
Brian

I was deleteing some Apps that were not being used on my MacBook Pro.
One of them was at the beginning of the App List when viewed in alphabetical order.
It was a green colored icon but seemed to be an Apple App.
You might be correct inthat it wasn't even an Apple App.
It could have come with a program I downloaded in the past.
I will download a large compressed file and see if it decompresses.
Thanks for the quick reply.

Your file is most likely toast, but still:
BOILERPLATE TEXT:
If you give complete and detailed information about your setup and the issue at hand,
such as your platform (Mac or Win),
exact versions of your OS, of Photoshop (not just "CS6", but something like CS6v.13.0.6) and of Bridge,
your settings in Photoshop > Preference > Performance
the type of file you were working on,
machine specs, such as total installed RAM, scratch file HDs, total available HD space, video card specs, including total VRAM installed,
what troubleshooting steps you have taken so far,
what error message(s) you receive,
if having issues opening raw files also the exact camera make and model that generated them,
if you're having printing issues, indicate the exact make and model of your printer, paper size, image dimensions in pixels (so many pixels wide by so many pixels high). if going through a RIP, specify that too.
etc.,
someone may be able to help you (not necessarily this poster).
a screen shot of your settings or of the image could be very helpful too.

• When i send a file over iChat to another mac it compresses the file, where is this compressed file stored?

Today i was transfering a few folders with pictures and videos over to another mac and I noticed that before i sent the file iChat would compress it. Now this is understandable because they were fairly large files, over 2GB, and this would make them transfer faster. The problem is that I was transfering the files because my mac is low on hard drive space and I was trying to free some up. By compressing the files first it was using up more space on my hard drive and I quickly cancelled the compression. I soon realized though that my hard drive space was still disappearing into thin air. I only had 6GB left and was running out fast. As it reached 2GB I began to quickly delete large files I no longer needed hoping that I wouldn't run out of space. It dropped all the way down to 12.4MB before it finally stopped, even with me deleting files. I'm not quite sure what was happening to all of my hard drive space, but was wondering if maybe iChat continued to compress the files even after I cancelled the compression. Anyways if anyone knows why this happened or where iChat stores the files it compresses that would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
I have heard of this before.
One report suggested it was only PDF files their case.
I cannot replicate it with any pic files (Over 2Gb) PDF or otherwise or files and folders combos.
My tests were from Lion/iChat 6.0.3 to Snow Leopard (iChat 5.0.3)
I would have thought iChat would have created the Zippped/Stuffed files in the same folder as the original items
(i.e pic in the pictures folder (or relevant subfolder) and other files and documents in the Documents folder.
With any application that does Stuffing/Zipping it will create temporary space for doing so.
Much like the way a graphics app creates a Scratch file to keep the 20 or so Undos it works with. (with graphic Apps you can make the Scratch file on another Drive if you have one which can help)
Do this:-
with iChat Open go to the Window Menu.
Select the File transfers item
In this Window (that pops up) select the File that was going to be Transferred.
When it is highlighted then do a Right-Click or Control Click and select the option to Show in Finder
Does it list the zipped file ?

• Creating Multi-Page PDF from a Layerd Illustrator file (script)

Often times when designing a logo I create different versions and variable options on layers. This can result in several layers in one Illustrator file. Is there an easy way or an existing script that will allow me to (with one click) create a multi-page PDF consisting of all the layers within my .ai file? The current method is turning on each layer, performing a save-as (PDF), then turning off said layer and turning on the next layer and repeating the task and so-on-and-so-forth, etc … It becomes tedious and quite often I save over the previous version, forgetting to re-name it or forget to perform a save on a certain layer. Can anyone help with some advice? I have never written my own script before but am not opposed to trying, where do I begin?
Any help is appreciated.

You don't say what OS you are using and which scripting language you are thinking of doing this in…
This is a sample that may get you started done in JavaScript so it's platform independent with the exception of my 'mac style' file paths.
If your on a PC it may just be a typo to set to C drive or whatever you call them things…
If you are on the mac OS then it should just dump a load of PDF's on your desktop.
You say about a multi-page PDF but don't think Illustrator can do this unless its been added with multi-artboards in CS4?
Others would have to let you know that…
#target illustrator
var docRef = app.activeDocument;
with (docRef) {
var docName = baseName(name)
var pdfOptions = new PDFSaveOptions();
pdfOptions.pDFPreset = '[High Quality Print]';
// Turn all layers off
for (var i = 0; i < layers.length; i++) {
layers[i].visible = false;
// Turn each layer on
for (var i = 0; i < layers.length; i++) {
if (i == 0) {
layers[i].visible = true;

var layerName = layers[i].name;

//close(SaveOptions.DONOTSAVECHANGES);
function baseName(fileName) {
var nameString = '';
var extOffset = fileName.lastIndexOf('.');
if (extOffset == -1) {
nameString = fileName;
} else {
nameString = fileName.substr(0, extOffset);
return nameString;

• Adobe After Effects CC 2014 Multi-machine rendering does not create RCF after Collect-File

This was working in the previous release. After going through all of the steps to perform a multi-machine render, not only does it say it is limiting it to 5 machines instead of the usual 99 (and I have over 100 cores on the render farm) but "Collect Files" (File/Dependencies/Collect Files) does not create the Render Control File (RCF) that kicks off the process on the other machines, like it did before and is supposed to do.
This release was supposed to fix the 32 core limitation on render nodes (my server has 48), but now does nothing at all.
Anyway, I assume there is a check box somewhere that says "do something" that hasn't been checked and another that says "Maybe my machine has more than 5 cores", and I would appreciate being steered in the direction of these new mis-features.
Just as background, the 48 core server does show the little TV screen that monitors the watch folder, and I know for a fact that process looks for the "RCF" file. Looking at the directory specified for "collect files", I can see that no RCF file is created, only 1 file, a report.txt file which contains this information is produced:

• Importing Multi-Layered Photoshop CS2 files...

Hello again everyone. I trust you are all well.
I am currently constructing some tutorials for my Video Editing class and I am trying to demonstrate how to import and use Multi-layered Photoshop CS2 files inside Final Cut Express 2.0.3.
Here is the problem:
My iBook is running Final Cut Express 2.0.3 but does not have Adobe Photoshop CS2 on it. My DELL PC is running Adobe Photoshop CS2 and I am creating my PSD's on that and then transfering those PSD's across to the iBook with either my USB stick or my iPod.
Now according to the Final Cut Express 2.0.3 Help file, "When you import a layered Photoshop File into Final Cut Express, the file becomes a sequence in your project".
However, when I import my PSD, that was created on my DELL in Photoshop CS2, into Final Cut Express 2.0.3, it does not import it as a sequence, but as a flattened still image.
Is this because I need to have Photoshop CS2 installed on my iBook for the PSD to be imported correctly as a sequence, retaining the layers, or is there a compatability issue with creating PSD's on a PC and then trying to import them into Final Cut Express 2.0.3?
Regards,
Justin Pamenter
Multimedia Teacher

Thanks for your quick reply Tom!
I had a feeling this might be the case after I did some more testing with Photoshop files created on a MAC. If I resave those PC Photoshop files on a Mac in Photoshop, they import correctly as a sequence into Final Cut Express.
Thanks again for the advice!
