Multicam and external audio workflow ?

Gents,
I'm starting a new project and for the first time I have to combine footage from two cameras and an external audio recorder, I just need few hints about the correct workflow to make sure I won't waste time with wrong methods. The event is about 1 hour long (wedding).
CamA has almost the full event, divided in 3 large files (fixed camera, rec always on, divided in 3 because of 29 minutes per clip limitations in EU), I used CamA to fill the gaps between CamB clips.
CamB has more than a hundred clips
Both cam A & B have internal recording but I also recorded the entire event with an external recorder, creating a single .mp3 file.
I need to create a 20/25 minutes video,
What is the best workflow to sync Cam B clips with Cam A ? How would you work with two camera files and the external audio as main and only good audio ?
Thanks

It doesn't look as though the audio file synced with the other angles.
Open the multiclip in the angle editor from the event broswer. Is the external audio present?

  • Multicam with external audio. Audio disappears on timeline

I'm doing what I've done a hundred times before: Two cameras, external audio.
But this time I'm doing it under Mavericks. Hmmmmmm.
    1. select cam-a, cam-b and audio track, make multicam file.
    2. double click to reveal on screen. Everything's fine, you can see waveforms, plays...everything's normal.
    3. Open New Project on timeline.
    4. hit "e" to advance multileg file to the timeline.
    5. No external audio. It's there in the angle editor, but no waveform, no sound.
I've looked at everything I can think of. Stumped......thoughts?
    Thanks,

  • Locking / Grouping Video and External Audio

I have video I recorded and it's in my timeline.
I have audio I recorded from my DAW and mixed down to a stereo mix (for a music video) and I've synced them up via a sync point.
When I grab the video file, I want the audio to move with it ... for them to be locked or grouped.  I tried to "LOCK" them together but it's not working.
    What am I doing wrong?

    2 things ...
    1. Even when I drag the video file (which still has audio from the camera for syncing purposes) into the timeline, the audio in that video file won't LINK correctly.  Meaning, even when I press CMD L it will underline the clips name as if it were "locked" but if I click and drag just the video clip, the audio won't drag with it.  When I splice the video file, the audio won't splice with it.  What's interesting is that FCP used to do this with older projects I was working on but maybe I hit a setting that somehow altered this feature?
    2. I'm creating multiclips from 2 camera angles, the "LINK" feature is greyed out when I want to "LINK" the multiclip and the external audio I've mixed down in ProTools.  It's not even an option to select when I highlite my multiclip and my external audio.
Re: Studio X, I appreciate the suggestion ... but TBH I'm not a video expert and not sure what "nesting" is. I just googled it.  What I've done is created a multiclip using my SYNC IN POINTS I created and now I want to edit/cut this piece together.  I still have color correction and things to do so "nesting" might be a bit premature for my abilities at this point.
any other thoughts on why the audio/video aren't linking correctly and how I can get EDITS and MOVING clips to happen together with just one mouse click?

  • Sync Cannon 5D video and external audio

    Hi,
I'm recording video on a Cannon 5D Mark II Camera and audio separately at 30 fps.
What sort of worlflow should I use from production to editing - to make sure the sound will sync correctly?
Is there a particular frame rate the video should be shot at?
If it is shot at 23.98 fps, how can I sync the 30fps audio in Final Cut in the end?
Thanks in advance for the help!

My situation is this: the director wants to shoot both 5D and 16mm footage and eventually edit them together, but she doesn't know how she wants to finish it - whether in film or video - yet.
She needs to record video and audio separately because this is a choir singing in a studio.  They need to record the sound in a studio for quality.  But the video shood take place outside.  There is no way to record the choir singing on location.
Excellent. Preplanning is what good production is based upon.
Shooting double system sound is not new, we've been doing it for, like, a century. It's all been invented, it's all been done, the entire workflow has long been perfected. Long ago. In every first time dual system shooting situation, the director thinks he/she knows more than the collected 100 years of experience of millions of sound people and the project descends into preventable chaos.
You are going to be shooting a common situation, lip-syncing to playback. "Playback" is one of the terms applied to the use of prerecorded sound or music providing the foundation or motivation during staged photography. The director rolls film, slates the take, calls for playback, and then says, "Action."
The technique is easily researched in any good library, look for film production handbooks.
Here's what you need (one version of a list, other wonks, of course, will offer a different list):
    1. Studio recorded music tracks with SMPTE timecode track (look it up)
    2. Playback equipment and sound delivery amplification/speakers for shooting on location that includes the ability to play the timecode track and feed it to a couple of devices
    3. A timecode slate that receives timecode from the sound track playback
    4. A timecode reader that will send the same timecode to all cameras
    5. Timecode receivers that will record timecode to the camera's timecode track
(Timecode can either be provided by a playback device or by a master generator. There are reasons why you choose one over the other. You might record a master t/c on the timecode track and feed the playback t/c to an aux input or u-bits or use the playback t/c to jam the master t/c generator.)
That's one of the ways the big boys do this. There are many others. The fundamental idea is that everything sees the same timecode and so cannot possibly get out of sync. It's not complicated but it's not trivial. It's a simple engineering project and the equipment is all off the shelf and standardized. Your director, of course, is going to say "We cannot afford to do this the correct way and I do not believe anyone who says it is actually more expensive to attempt to fix audio sync in post instead of doing it properly in the filed, so, how can we hack this for free?"
And you will be back after your shoot to ask us how you can get this fixed.
Shooting 16mm is fun and an excellent stylization decision but it carries additional planning ad post production considerations. If you or your director have never shot fil, you should hire an experienced photographer because you don't get second chances with film and the ability to repair film in post with digital effects is not only limited, it's an expensive waste of time if the film could have been exposed properl. Deliberate post production film grading ad effects are not included in that statement because they require extensive preplanning and knowledge that, looks to me, your production staff and crew do not yet possess.
You need to know the differences between the sensor sizes of 16m cameras and DSLRs produce wildly different depth of field tables for any given focal length and focus distance. The idea that you can intercut the two media must not be based on the misperception the formats have similar looks. They are wildly different in every way.

  • Multicam and multiple audio tracks sync issue, dual system shoot

I've got a pesky problem with the multicam feature that has me stumped. I've got two cameras, slated with a clapboard, and one track of location sound recorded dual system on a seperate recorder. I have no matched TC on any of the tracks, got to use IN point only. I've tried making a merged clip for cam 1, then making the multiclip using the merged cam 1 clip and cam 2. The video of the multiclip is in sync fine, but the location sound (which is A3 on cam 1) is always offset and way out of sync.
I've tried blowing away A1 and A2 from the cam 1 merged clip, putting the location sound at A1, and using that master clip to create the multiclip, but to no avail. Still out of sync
It appears that because the location sound has a different start time in the merged clip than the video, FCP is getting confused about what to do with it.
I've been successful with this method before, but the last time I had matched TC on the cameras. For some reason making the multiclip using the IN point for sync isn't working this time.
Anyone encounter this and have a work around or solution?

Loyed's got way more experience with multicam than most of us so it's safe to follow his lead.
Not knowing exactly what's going on (sorry if you've already tried this), I'd sync up the audio and then export the newly merged clip as a self-contained movie. Reimport.
Hope you figure it out. Please return and post your solution for the benefit of those who come after seeking help with multiclips.

  • Editing in Multicam and having audio problems....

    HI there,
I am a new PCPX user and learning quickly. Loving it!  I have been editing 3 different shows in Multi Cam editing and haven't had any problems as of yet with
audio.   On the third one now, and I've selected my main track and also selected "enable video switching only".  Only the audio is switching.  I've matched the audio,
which is helping but it's still noticeable to me and driving me insane....
Like I said, new to this, so not entirely familiar with ins & outs of FCPX yet!  Thanks!

It seems to work fine when I add transitions....I have no idea, since I didnt change anything.  The other segment on the same timeline still plays the other audio.  It's driving me nuts! Active Angle & Audio shows what its supposed to.  Chalk it up to a fluke or glitch in the program?  Not the first one i've had either, the other day it wouldn't render. Shut it down and restarted to work fine.  Is this normal for a newly purchased program???

  • Record Video+external audio+system audio

I need to record a movie with:
    - Input from my firewire Camcorder
    - Input from my external audio interface
    - Input from GarageBand output
Till now I just find two ways of doing it:
    1.
    - Record audio in GarageBand and video in Quicktime at the same time
    - Sync both recordings (with Quicktime or ImovieHD)
    2.
    - Open a Quicktime movie recording
    - Start a screen video capture applicaton (with option to record system audio) and select the quicktime window to record
    - Start recording
    - Go to GarageBand and start playing
    - Switch to Quicktime screen and realy start my recording
    - Trim the unwanted initial video recorded.
Unfortnately both workflows are just tricks to do something that is no directly achieved by the applications. In the end it takes double the time to record a movie than it should take.
Is there any way to record with Quicktime a movie and at the same time both internal and external audio?
Is there another application to do it? I have search many applications and it seems that only screencapture apps can record internal sound. I have heard of wirecast but is too expensive (400$).

Although the application seems very interesting how can it help me since it does not record video?
I have no problem in recording audio in GarageBand, the problem is recording in sync audio and video so I don't have later to mix and sync both flows.
Maybe my question is not clear.

  • Lock external audio to video

I am editing a project in iMovie that is using audio recorded on a separate device than the video was shot on.  I have successfully synced the audio and video together with the use of hand claps at the beginning of the video.  My problem is now editing the project and removing the hand claps from the video.  How can I lock the video and external audio clip together so that I can trim the front and back of the project?  Right now, the video and audio are 2 separate pieces and trimming one does not trim the other.  Basically a reverse of the "detach audio" function that makes the camera audio a separate entity from the video clip.
I am not doing this as background audio as all videos that I saw on how to perform the sync did not do this as background audio.  Unfortunately, none of the videos show the step of trimming out the claps.
    Thanks,
    Roger

The real answer is to use Final Cut Pro. It has a feature that will automatically sync audio clips with video clips from multiple cameras. You could use this feature to automatically line up the external audio with your video clips. Once you do, you can edit your movie easily.
You can do this in iMovie, but it is a lot more of a manual effort.
    1. When you add the audio, do not drop it in the background. Drop it on one of the first video clips. The sound file will appear as a ribbon beneath the video clips. You can easily drag it left or right, or trim it.
    2. If you need to edit out stuff like hand claps, I suggest you first get the audio and the video lined up. Set the volume of the video clips to zero. Then Share the project. Use SHARE/EXPORT USING QUICKTIME. Choose Movie to QuickTime Movie. Choose Apple Intermediate Codec as the Video codec in the Options. Leave the audio codec as uncompressed.  This will create an .mov file in the Apple Intermediate Codec. You can use FILE/IMPORT MOVIE to import this file into an Event. Now the good audio is joined with the good video, and you can edit it like you are used to.
    3. There is another way.  For simplicity, let's say you have an audio clip with song A, then applause and a pause, and then Song B. You can drag in your audio file twice, again - dropping it on a video clip rather than on the background. Then use the clip trimmer to trim away the back half of the audio clip (Leaving only Song A). Use the clip trimmer to trim away the front half of the other clip (Leaving Song B). Now you have two separate audio clips that you can move around
    4. You can also accomplish the steps in #3 above by dragging in the audio clips twice, and then dragging the handles on the edges of the audio clips. Drag the front handle left to right to delete song A and leave Song B. Drag the right handle of the other clip to the left to delete song B and leave Song A.
Bottom line: it is easy in Final Cut Pro X. It is a kluge in iMovie.

  • Error while trying to synchronize audio and MIDI.  Sample rate 42804 recognized.  Check conflict between Garageband and external device.

Sometimes, while playing back my software instrument songs, I get an intermittent pop-up error message, saying "Error while trying to synchronize audio and MIDI.  Sample rate 42804 recognized.  Check conflict between Garageband and external device."
(Sometimes the five digit number is different, but remains a five-digit number beginning with "4".)
Simultaneously, the song stops until I press the "Okay" button in the pop-up window.
When I continue to play the song, the sound is jerky and clipped, and the playhead doesn't keep up with the song, and then suddenly jumps to the part of the song currently being played.
There's also a sound of static.
The issue seems to occur whether or not I have my MIDI controller turned on and plugged into my desktop Imac.

  • Audio coming from both TV Speakers and external soundbar - how do I suppress the TV audio output?

Just after my warranty expired, my Toshiba 55TL515U started to play sounds through both the TV's speakers as well as outputting audio to my external Polk Audio soundbar, which is connected to the TV via the Digital Audio Output line. The TV never did this after I connected the external soundbar until a few days ago.
I don't want any sound to come out of the TV speakers, I only want sound to come out of the soundbar. There's a horrible echo effect that occurs when both sound systems are active.
I don't see a setting on any of the TV menus to control this. I would assume that if the TV senses an external audio device, it would no longer output any sound to the TV's speakers.
Is there a setting on the TV I'm missing, or is this something broken within my TV?
I called Polk Audio tech support, and they claim it's not a problem with the soundbar, but with the TV.
If anyone can comment on this, I'd be very thankful.

I have the same problem. When I mute the TV, I get sound only from Soundbar which is fine. But, everytime I turn on my tv, I had to mute my tv. And if I accidently press the volume button on TV, then both TV and Soundbar plays sound and that sucks.

  • I have lost all audio on both my internal and external speakers.

I have lost audio on both my internal and external speakers.  I have checked the System Preferences when my external speakers are plugged in it is acknowledged.  When using internal speakers they are also acknowledged.  Sound volume on Preferences is on and fully high.  The sound buttons on the keyboard  do not work and the sound level is now locked in at full sound and cannot be adjusted using the keys.  The System Preferences shows that Mute is now checked and I cannot uncheck it.  What should I do to get my sound back both internally and externally?

    =====================
    Repairing the mysteriously muted Mac
The background on the issue is that there’s a small sensor switch inside the headphone port. When you insert a headphone jack, the sensor understands what's what and changes the sound output setting to Headphones. If you insert a jack for digital audio output, the device changes to Digital Out. When you remove the jack completely, it should read Internal Speakers.
The spirits tell me that there’s a very good chance that you recently had something jacked into this port—a set of headphones or a cable leading to powered speakers, for example. When you removed the jack, something in the port prevented the sensor from tripping correctly. That’s why you see Digital Out instead of internal Speakers.
The solution is to force the sensor to do its job. The safest way to do that is to simply run a jack in and out of the port a few times. Much of the time, this takes care of the problem by correctly tripping the sensor. If that doesn’t work, there may be gunk in the port. Before turning to more invasive techniques, get a can of compressed air, attach the small tube that fits the nozzle, and blast a few shots of air into the port. With any luck, that should dislodge the gunk and the port will operate as it should.
If that doesn’t work, find a foam-tipped swab that fits (electronics shops generally carry them), dip it in rubbing alcohol, and gently insert it into the headphone port in an attempt to wipe away any stubborn gunk. I recommend foam rather than cotton swabs because the cotton variety might leave threads behind. (This same technique works well with misbehaving headphone ports on devices such as iOS devices.)
It's possible that gunk has nothing to do with it. Rather, it may be that the switch just needs a subtle nudge. If a jack or swab doesn't work, I've heard of people successfully resetting it with a deft poke of a toothpick.

  • Lenovo g580 do I need to buy an external audio interface to record live instruments and voice ?

Hello,  If anyone could help me please ?, I am wondering do I need to buy an external audio interface to record live instruments and voice onto my lenovo g580.?
My friends have said that good laptops have audio interface's built in... but I cannot see how this could work as I am trying to build a home recording studio. Do they mean that I just need to have a mixing desk ? As the audio interface is already in my laptop, ?
Another question I have is... I have bought a microphone to record with a studio mic. But when I plug it into the headphone socket, it works as a speaker and not as a microphone. Please can you tell me how do I make it work as a microphone, and record on ableton. Thanks. I live alone with two cats so I'd really appreciate some help !
Thank you very much, best wishes.

I'm preparing to expand my studio from a 1 man songwriting system,

simultaneous tracks recording. Am I dreaming?
Nope. I've been recording live bands with up to 56 channels at 24 bit 48kHz for three years now.
    1) Does my computer have enough native power to handle such a task?
Yes. The actual recording uses the hard drive buss, so you need to make sure you have fast drives and a dedicated FW or SATA buss for them.
    2) Is there an audio interface device that could help shoulder some of
    the cpu load?
No. CPU is used only for routing audio, effects, etc. An audio interface is used to route the audio in and out of the computer, and as such does not process effects at all.
    3) is it possible to use my multiple, fast internal drives to help?
Yes. Although with Logic Pro you can use only one drive at a time for recording. HOWEVER, I have been able to use SATA drives to record up to 56 tracks AT ONCE. So there is plenty of power there.
    4) If not 16, what's the highest realistic track count I can hope for?
Again, I have done 56 tracks. 16 is a walk in the park in comparison to 56. I would recommend you invest in Apogee AD16X and DA16X, since in one interface you get ALL 16 inputs, and the other gives you the 16 outputs to go to, say, a mixer. And the sound quality is very very very good.
    thanks in advance
    You're welcome.

  • Multicam and Audio question

When editing weddings, you have different audio tracks on each camera. Since when muticam editing in Premiere Pro, you edit in a nested sequence and the audio track can be only one track, how would I go about adjusting audio as I edit?
By adjusting I mean when sometimes the cameraman will interview a guest during the dancing or there will be loud clapping from the audience and I will want to raise the volume of the audience track for those few moments but in the nested multicam sequence, I don't have both audio tracks... and even if I duplicate the audio in the target sequence, it doesn't help because since it's nested, you can't see the wave form of the audio. To have to keep going back to the target and navigating to the time I'm holding in my editing and adjusting the audio seems like a pain.
How do you guys do this?
    Thanks.

I've done it two ways.  When I have several complicated audio tracks, I create an audio sequence and edit the audio there.  Then I just nest that one sequence into the multicam target (and mute or delete the multicam audio track).  The video is usually not critical (e.g. a play, so one camera's video gives me what I need).
I have also added the original audio clips to the multicam target sequence.  Since they are original clips, they have waveform.
If you have made many cuts (ie. less continuious material), this will be challenging no matter what method you use.

  • Firewire chain for external audio interface and hard drive

I use Logic Studio 8 on a Macbook Pro with a Presonus Firebox, an external Lacie Firewire hard drive for audio recording, and another Lacie Firewire drive for backups.
Is there a recommended chain order when chaining my Firewire devices together? I read somewhere on a ProTools forum that they recommend putting their Firewire audio interface Mbox2Pro at the end of the chain.
So right now I have Macbook Pro -> Backup Drive -> Audio Drive -> Presonus Firebox. I once had it in a different order with the audio drive first, but I found it was reading more slowly from/to the audio drive when it was in that order. I have no idea technologically why this would be the case.

I just found and joined this great forum. Following up on Ray's comments about his MacBook set-up, I have a similar MacBook 2ghz, 4mb ram, 9400 chipset, and am exploring getting into Logic Pro 8 and was wondering if my MacBook was underpowered, and whether I needed to step up right away to a MacBook Pro because of my lack of PCI slots for recording audio to an external eSATA drive.
I was encouraged to hear that the USB 2.0 connection for Ray's external WD 7200 hard drive has worked and improved things and his audio isn't getting choked and he is not getting the clicks and other problems.
I'm wondering if Ray or anyone else has any other tips on using a MacBook for Logic and for optimizing one's setup. And Ray, did you notice a point at which the clicks started? .. in terms of number of tracks? Or were they present from the outset? I'm wondering how many tracks you are running now on your system.
I might mention that I don't have an audio interface yet but was impressed with what I've read about the Apogee Duet. Any comments on interfaces and the Duet?
By the way, I'm just recording one instrument/one track at a time and perhaps occasionally two instruments at a time. And right now, my main purpose for getting into Logic is for editing and mixdown of pre-existing tracks that have already been created on a standalone hard-disc based DAW. If all goes well and if I like the whole Logic experience I'd expect to get a more powerful MacBook Pro or even a Mac Pro or whatever higher end iMac exists in the future.
To summarize, all I'm intending to do initially with the MacBook is:
    1) transfer individual digital tracks from a standalone hard disc-based DAW into Logic for mixdown and mastering.
    2) Record a few extra new tracks one at a time - probably not using any instrument plug-ins but relying on external synth/sampler/guitar sound sources ..in each song (maybe 3-4 tracks at most), and
    3) apply standard effects like reverb and EQ and panning to the mix down and master songs, each song containing a of approx 25-40 tracks.
My basic question is, can a MacBook 2Ghz with firewire 400, 4gb memory and USB2.0 to external hard drive handle this or is it underpowered? Thanks.
    Derek
