Multidimensionality of C type array and NSArray

C type arrays can be defined as multidimensional. Is there a pendent for NSArrays?
Perhaps: declaring an NSArray with an instance variable which is itself a NSArray?

Sorry, my table wasn't really clear. I inserted spaces instead of tabs in the table which made the table unreadable. These spaces were removed automatically during sending my message. As said, I like to sort all arrays1 (array1.1 up to array1.n) contained in array2 according to column 3 without disturbing the order within arrays1. If this statement is perhaps too abstract I give an example. Suppose column3 contains the integers 3, 5, 1, 2:

Unfortunately, I see my Cocoa kowledge is too weak until now, so I have to learn a lot more. I have vaguely heard about 'blocks' and I don't know the method 'sortedArrayUsingComparator'. Nonetheless, I hope that now my question/problem is clear.

  • Yet another case of new type[array] and parametrized type

    I suppose this is an often asked question, to which I seem not to be able to find a simple answer. I know of the "incompatibility" of arrays and generics, and yet in such a seemingly simple case I run into a mystery, or a compiler bug. Look at this warning:
    Set<Integer>  C[];
    foo/bar/some.java:1148: warning: [unchecked] unchecked conversion

    required: java.util.Set<java.lang.Integer>[]
                    C=new HashSet[H-L+1];So far so good, but precisely this *"Set<type>[]"* does not exists, does it? When I try to add a parametrized type to this new statement, compiler says:

    1 errorIn a regular case we can easy deal with the "unchecked" warnings, e.g. Effective Java 2nd Ed, Item 24 discusses this, but all this seem to be ignoring this case. When generic array creation is not permitted, than why this warning stating that *"java.type<typeparam>[] required"* appear, and how to resolve this for safety and correctness? Of course, I can still ignore the warning and do a few instanceof checks and casts, like before, but I am really curious how to transfer this into the new paradigm.
    As much generics improve and help in many cases, I regret their arcane complexity. To paraphrase C.A.R. Hoare, the Java language itself becomes now the problem, not its solution.

    I wonder if we have someplace recent measure just an array stack against a current implementation of a set in Java? In JDK1.4 I remember array was several times faster, 350% faster if my memory serves me, and I do have the classic "inner loop" operation, very repetitive. I can live with the warning, what's the problem?
    Of course all this are considerations fully aside of the issue at hand, that the JDK1.6 compiler prints a nonsense warning message that a parametrized array is expected, what is in fact illegal in current implementation of generics. Which is in my eyes severely faulty, but that would be yet another assault on the Braha Ivory Tower, wouldn't it?

    there is a problem i discovered right now - after years with java where was no necessity to do this.....
    and i'm shure this must have been the topic already, but i couldn't find any helpful resource :-/
    right here we go:
    1. an array is a (special) kind of object.
    2. there are "primitive" arrays and such containing references to objects. of course - and i imagine why - they are treated differently by the VM.
    3. then both are - somehow - subclasses of Object. whereas primitive types are not really, primitive-arrays are. this is hidden to the programmer....
    4. any array can be "pointed" at via local Object variable, like this:
    Object xyz = new int[6];
    5. arrays of Objects (with different dimensions) can be casted, like this:
      Object pointer = null;
      Object[]   o  = new SomeClass[42] ;
      Object[][] oo = new OtherClass[23] [2] ;
      Object[][][] ooo = new OtherClass[23] [2] [9] ;
      o = oo = ooo;     // this is save to do,
                                   //because "n-dimensional" object-arrays

    i'm stuck. i see no way to do this smoothly. i could write thousands of methods for each primitive array - BlackBox( int[] is ) etc. - but this wouldn't help. because i can't cast an int[][] to int[], i would also have to write countless methods for each dimension. and guess, how much there are?
    suppose, i ultimately wrote thousands of possible primitive-type methods. it would be easy to undergo any of it, writing this:
    BlackBox( (Object) new int[9] [9] );
    the method-signature would again only fit to my first method, so the whole work is useless. i CAN cast an int[] to Object, but there seems no convenient way to get the real array out of Object - in a generic way.
    i wonder, how do you write a serialisation-engine? and NO, i can't rely on "right usage" of my classes, i must assume the worst case...

    your code looks weird to me g and i think there's at least one false assumption: .length of a multidimensional array returns only the number of "top-level" subarrays. that means, every length of every subarray may vary. ;)
    well i guess i figured it out, in some way:
    an int is no Object;
    int[ ] is an Object
    the ComponentType of int [ ] is int
    so, the ComponentType of an Object int[ ] is no Object, thus it cannot be casted to Object.
    but the ComponentType of int [ ] [ ] IS Object, because it is int [ ] !
    so every method which expects Object[], will work fine with int[ ] [ ] !!
    now, you only need special treatment for 1-dimensional primitive arrays:

    We get that you are unable to do this, but it is still not clear precisely what it is that you want, a two-dimensional array, or a structure such as SeanQuinlan suggested? Also:
    there seems no reason for any of the variables to be global in scope.
    Where is the $serverlist variable defined?
    what relationship is there between the file you mention and the data in the $serverlist variable?
    Your code has three arrays, $name, $names, and $infos; which two of these do you want to combine into a single array? If $names and $infos, would this work for you:
        $namesNinfos = $serverlist | select name,info
    I suggest that you describe your situation without trying to state it in powershell (as that is partly where your problem lies). You could, for example, show sample content of the file and each of the two arrays, and show what this would look like in your
    desired two-dimensional array, perhaps like this:

    As an aside, it could be that we are getting confused by the term "array". languages such as fortran and basic support multidimensional arrays in which each element is addressed by a set of integer indices, the most common form being row and column, as in
    a spreadsheet.
    In Powershell, arrays are generally one dimensional, with a single numerical index being used to select a single element ($row3 = $array[2]). That element can optionally have multiple values if it is defined as an array or a hash. This is referred to as
    a "jagged array" as each element of the array may not all have the same number of sub-elements as each other.
    Powershell also supports true multidimensional arrays, however, these seem fairly rarely used, I suspect because jagged arrays generally provide more easily used functionality.

  • RAID 5 array. 2 arrays (/) and (/home) - asks about this

    Hello pals. On wiki, we'have that it's necessary create the array with mdadm, after assemble, and after installs arch like anyother disk system, just add while in chroot "mdadm_udev" and run "mkinitcpio -p linux"
    My question, however, is:
    In a first try, I don't know if I did the mistake, but my /home partition were mounted, with, the root partition. So "not enough space".
    I've reinstalled all again, Everithing working since, but yesterday, arch halts and, after reboot, I "lost" my /home, and not "md0" and "md1" devices, but "md126" and "md127" ones are founded on my arrays, and, no more linux.
    fsck didn't work (not found the uuid XXXX partition"
    I'm using a RAID5 scheme with "md0" as /root and "md1" as /home. md0 with 3 hard disks and md1 with three too.
    RAID is a LSICorp with 21320R 6 bay. HD SCSI
    partition type were XFS to "root" and "ext4" to /home.

  • Inserting Records in an Array and using a constructor with it

    I badly need help on this! Please please please! I have been studying java for a short time only.
    Anyway, here goes: My project requires the following:
    Employee inputs the no. of video in the shelf. They have four classifications: Drama, Comedy, Action, and Thriller. Each video classification has different rates. The employee creates a video record containing the following information: 1. video ID number, 2. video classification, and 3. Price.
    The employee should display the classifications of videos available and the price. Only the available video tapes would be displayed according to the customer's chosen classification. When the customer chooses the video he wants to rent, the program will register and attach the name of the customer to the video number.
    I only need to use arrays, and NOT database to record the information.

    is it ok i i declare the drama_rate outside the video class?
    i have a list of variables on my videoupdate classYes. It's probably best to declare it static & then you can access it directly:
    public static float drama_rate = 100.0;
    rate = <the class name>.drama_rate;
    so, i should also include a customer no. both in the video and customer class.I would. You may want to list a bunch of videos and who currently has them. This way you don't have to search the customers AND the videos to do this.

    Have you looked at HashMaps? You could use "Customer" as the key and then use an ArrayList of checked out Videos as the value:

  • Converting object wrapper type array into equivalent primary type array

    My question is how to convert object wrapper type array into equivalent prime type array, e.g. Integer[] -> int[] or Float[] -> float[] etc.
    Is sound like a trivial task however the problem is that I do not know the type I work with. To understand what I mean, please read the following code -

    I think I've found the answer myself ;-)
    Never thought I could use something like int.class or double.class,
    so the next statement holds int[] q = (int[])Array.newInstance( int.class, 2 );
    and the easy solution is the following -
    Object primeArray = Array.newInstance( token.getPrimeClass(), split.length );
    for (int j = 0; j < split.length; j++) {
         Method meth = clazz.getMethod( "valueOf", new Class[]{ String.class });
         Object val = meth.invoke( null, new Object[]{ split[j] });
         Array.set( primeArray, j, val );
    }where "token.getPrimeClass()" return appropriate Class, i.e. int.class, float.class etc.

    and so can not go ahead. In fect I wanted to use next level also. like this.
    The next command remains my dream only then because I could not create the SPECIES ARRAY it self..

    the problem is for multiple level ARRAY AND RECORD/object combination..

    I think multi-level collections was first implemented in 9.2. You failed to mention what version of the DB you are using.

    there's no Backdrop method there.  and, if you're importing your Backdrop class, you can't use a Backdrop method.  i don't know what you're trying to do but if you're trying to create a Backdrop instance use the following:

  • Help plz regarding array and DB

    hi ,
    i have a problem regarding sorting.
    I have 1 million records in my DB table.
    When i open my swing application i sort the records in table [ORDER BY col1,col3,col4] like that and want that order record ids .
    upto here no problem.i am getting the ids in array and in my swing application when i go next i get from arrray the next record.
    but the problem is since the volume of the table is large if any addition r deletion to the table is not reflecting in the sorted order array.
    i can simply again call the database and sort it an update the error.but it proved very insufficent way.
    so i am looking something to optmise the sorting.
    i got an idea like using view .but i am looking anybody knows any workaround alogrithm for this.

    Here is an example taken from the ResultSet API Doc's. Note the constant type of "TYPE_SCROLL_SENSITIVE" for the type of ResultSet. Is this what you are using? (I have not tried this, but it is the solution that is put forth in my books and documents.)

    In many examples the graph and charts are shown as "array data type and cluster data type "------in the block diagram panel...

    These are very basic issues and it should be clear once you study the online help and examples for a while.
    Waveform Graphs
    Plain waveform graphs assume equally spaced data. The x-values are implicit from x0 and dx of the x-axis. By default x0=0 and dx=1, meaning the x-values are the array indices. You can change the offset and multiplier from the properties dialog or programmatically via property nodes.
    If you give a 2D array, there will be multiple graphs. Transpose if needed.
    Alternatively, you can give a cluster of [x0, dx, y-array] and the x-axis will adjust accordingly.
    As another alternative, you can built a waveform datatype and feed it to the graph.
    You can also graph dynamic data.
    XY graphs
    xy graphs are needed if the x-vlaues are not regularly spaced.They take a variety of data formats, so pick what is most approriate for the data
    A cluster of an x-array and a y-array
    An array of clusters, each containing an xy pair
    A complex datatype (it will graph imaginary vs. real or similar).
    Charts
    Charts are different, because they maintain a data history buffer an retain a certain amount of data. Some examples of data inputs:
    A single scalar: it wil be appended to the existing chart data, possibly throwing out the oldest existing point.
    An array: The array data will be appended to the existing chart data.
    A cluster of e.g. 5 points: The chart will have 5 dividual plots, one point gets appended to each plot.
    etc.
    The express xy-graph can be configured as xy chart, etc.
    Sure, it is a bit complicated at the beginning, but the complexity also gives you flexibility to do exactly what you want. Just play around with various scenarios and look at the outcome. The best way to learn!

    I am supposed to store the object info in database as xml. I cannot use regular xml encoding schemas due to limitations.

  • Multi dimensional arrays and table indicators

    I'm wondering how I can write a string array with more than two dimensions to a table. Specifically what I want to do is this:
    I am currently writing a 2d array to the table. Column 1 consists of the channel names from my DAQmx task and Column two is the current data for those channels. What I am trying to do is to split that up into a '2 column view' so that:
    Column 1: 1st half of  the channel names
    Column 2: 1st half of the data
    Column 3: 2nd half of the channel names
    Column 4: 2nd half of the data
    Here are the steps that I've done to try and make this work:
    I've split the original 2d array in half by using the 'delete from array' vi which outputs both parts that I need then putting that through the build array vi.  When I do this, the data wire out of the build array vi is of type '3d array' I'm thinking it should be a 4d array and I'm not sure why it isn't. When I try and wire the table to this it will not allow it because the sink type is for 2d arrays.
    Any advice or suggestions?

    that you get a 3D array is absolut correct. If you have two 2D array, then the next dimension is 3D. Draw a 2D array on one paper (your first part) and a 2D array on another paper (your second part). If you combine them, put one on the other you get a 3D array.
    But you need a 2D array.
