Multiple JREs and applets

I work in an environment that has, over the years, purchased a number of browser-based applications requiring different versions of JREs. We are now getting to the point of JREs clashing with each other.
I'm a little hesitant to believe that more recent versions of the JRE are not compatible with earlier versions of JREs, i.e. JRE 1_4_2_03 and JRE 1_4_2_05 (this is only a conceptual example).
Is it the application with these conficts, JAVA in general or both?
I feel like our environment may be missing something. We would like to be able to launch http://application1 using this JRE, 1.4.2.03 and http://application2 using another JRE, 1.4.2.05.
I aplologize for posting with such vagueness. Please direct me to a more appropriate forum if deemed appropriate.

Are those bona fide requirements, or are they just CYA requirements? They'd be the former if the application crashes with any other JRE and the latter if the designers happened to test with a particular JRE and therefore won't guarantee the application will work with anything else.
My bet would be on the latter (which would mean you don't need a large JRE collection), although it is possible that some of those applications ran into a specific bug in JRE version X which was fixed in version X.01.

  • JRE versions and Browsers and Applets

    Is there a way to assign a particular JRE version to a browser session through JavaScript or VBScript programatically so that I can run applets from different sources which need different JREs?
    Basically I will have 2 links/buttons which will call two separate javascript methods to open two different browser windows to run two different applets running under different JREs
    However when I start IE each 'session' of IE is assigned to one JRE, any way to overcome this?
    TIA,
    Raj

    Martin thanks for your inputs
    I am sourcing html pages from multiple sites and the html/applet tag is generated by those websites.
    They do have the applet tag pointing to proper class-id of the java plugin.
    However, the problem is with IE one family(session) of browsers are attached to one version of JRE plugin.
    Here 'session' means: you open a browser and from within that browser you do go from a link or javascript etc. to another browser they are in same 'session'
    I am working on dynamically setting JRE plugin version to different browsers.
    Not sure I made it clear or confusing : )
    Thanks

  • How to use multiple JREs (1.5.0_20 and 1.6.0_07) with Internet Explorer 8?

    Hi!
    Question about the problem mentioned in subject.
    I have configured that JNLP opens with 1.5 version, both versions are enabled in Java Control Panel Runtime Settings but when I try to start a desktop java console says:
    Java Web Start 1.5.0_22
    Using JRE version 1.6.0_07 Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM
    And the opening of the desktop creates an exception:
    Java Web Start - Invalid Argument Error
    TooManyArgumentsException[ Too many arguments supplied: {C:\WINDOWS\Temporary, Internet, Files\Content.IE5\....
    I'm trying to open my desktop with 1.5 version and other programs with 1.6 version. What is it that I still need to do? I'm kind of confused with this. Some of my collagues have succeeded with this and some doesn't, with the same configuration.
    So the question is, how to use multiple JREs with IE8 so that one application uses 1.5 version and others 1.6 version?

    Once you can come up with an actual question, I might look at this more closely.

  • Multiple JRE Installations and Coexistence

    Hi Guys
    Could any of you please help at all.
    I am looking to find out is anyone has experienced or knows of any coexistence issues relating to Sun JRE installations.
    We have the following JRE versions deployed on our estate:
    1.4.2_04, 1.4.2_05 and 1.30_02
    These are existing application dependencies.
    We are looking to also deploy version 1.5.0_05 for a new application so this could potentially be installed on a machine with any of the above versions already installed.
    If anyone has experienced any coexistence issues with any of the above, I would be very grateful of your help.
    Many thanks all

    6u10 offers a solution to this problem. The rewritten plugin in 6u10 allows the plugin to call the JRE version specified by the applet. The html source calling the applet must specify the version, which you may need to add if it is not already there.

  • XI Client Installation with Multiple JREs

    I'm wondering if it is possible to have multiple JREs greater than 1.4 installed and still use the XI client for IB/IR.  I have configured JWS to only use the 1.4.2 version I have installed, but it still tries to startup on Java 6.
    Thanks in advance.
    Peter
    Sorry for the simple question, but I haven't been successful in getting this to work.

    One "simple" way of doing this is to manually start Java Web Start 1.4 and run IR and ID directly from there.
    Just run \Java\j2re1.4.2_xx\javaws\javaws.exe and once it opens, type the addresses of IR and ID in the "Location" field (http://<host>:<port>/rep/start/repository.jnlp and http://<host>:<port>/dir/start/directory.jnlp). Once the applications are loaded (once you see the icon in the "Applications" frame) you may click on the Start button. Then the applications will be started using JRE 1.4.
    In order to open the links directly from the XI start page, there is another option. Run the Control Panel/Java entry (assuming you have installed JDK 1.5 or superior), go to the Java tab. The upper part configuration (click on View) is regarding the execution of Java apps and applets. You may select the JREs you want to load for these (select 1.5). In the lower part of the screen, there is the configuration for runtime settings, where you select the JRE that runs the JNLP applications. Here, you may select JRE 1.4. But be aware that all .jnlp's that you run will be loaded with JRE 1.4.

    Henrique.

  • Question about JRE and Swing applications

    Hi i trying to make a Swing application whit some clients but one of them tell me that he have a lot of troubles whit java, because someone make an applet for his website and when he upgrade the JRE the applet dont work anymore.
    In my case i dont want any applets, i want swing, but a im not sure if
    swing uses the JRE and if the application im going to make, may have troubles when they upgrade de JRE.
    Tanks for de answers and sorry for my english

    In general, Java maintains upward compatibility (older code runs in newer Java releases.)
    Certain exceptions are made, and each major Java release identifies these. The current document can be read here:

  • Can JRE and MVM Coexist???

    In an IE6 environment, I realize I can install both the MVM from MS and the JRE from Sun, and that I can toggle the use of the JRE within IE's advanced settings, but...
    Can they both be used by different apps at the same time? I've got a PDM web app that needs the JRE, and a web-based colaboration tool that needs the MVM...
    Thanks for any input.

    By using the <EMBED> tag instead of <APPLET>, you can force the browser to detect the JRE even if MSJVM is the default. The JDK incudes a utility (HtmlConverter) that will convert your <APPLET> statements for you.
    Downsides (there's always a downside, isn't there?) are that I don't think <EMBED> is supported by all OS/browser combinations in the same way, and many corporate firewalls block embedded content, so you gotta be careful where you use it.

  • Multiple File Upload Applet

    I am attempting to code a JavaBean wrapped by an applet that will upload multiple files to a web server via the multipart/form-data mime-type.
    I have moved a number of files to the web server with limited success.
    I cannot move more than roughly 30Mbs of files in any configuration without causing a fatal exception.
    I am confident that it is a limitation of the client's VM and the memory allocated to the applet.
    I have seen several commercial grade applets that claim they can move any number of files even totalling 180Mbs.
    My applet is very simple. It opens a JFileChooser dialog box, allowing the user to select multiple files and communicates directly to a server side component that accepts multipart/form-data.
    I am navigating the protocol just fine. It seems to be a memory problem on the client side. Does anyone know how I can defeat this restriction and pass a reasonably high number of files (100-200) ranging from 50Mbs to 180+Mbs?
    Secondly, why does this happen: when I put my files onto the output stream, no files move accros the stream until I call .close(). How can I write the code to begin transferring bytes as soon as I call outputstream.write(xxx)?

    i am also developing multiple file upload applet and i transferred 1,4gb of data (2 files a 700MB) successfully.
    also, i just transferred a few hundred files with total size of 900mb to my localhost webserver (~5000kb/s)
    1) open file
    2) read a few kilobytes into buffer
    3) send them to the server
    4) flush the outputstream (!!)
    5) clear buffer and goto 2)
    6) if end-of-file, close the file and flush again.
    the outputstream is flushed every few kilobytes, so it will be sent over the socket to the server and not buffered until dawn.
    i don't know how the server-side is working, but i used apache/php script.
    you can try out my applet under
    http://www.haller-systemservice.net/jupload/

  • Creating multiple Threads in applets

    Hi, I need some help creating multiple threads in applets. If you look at the simple code example below youll see that it uses one thread that calls the findTarg() method that gives its sleep() a value and makes the oval find its new target.
    What I want to know is how do I create a new thread in this applet? So for example I could call a findTarg2() method from within a new thread that sets its sleep() to a faster or slower value and starts at the same time as findTarg().
    Hope that makes sense.
    <applet code="thread.class" height=400 width=400>
    </applet>
    import java.awt.Graphics;
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    public class thread extends java.applet.Applet implements Runnable {
    int x = 200;
    int y = 200;
    int xTarg;
    int yTarg;
    int sleeper;
    boolean go;
    Thread first;
    public void start(){
    if(first == null); {
    first = new Thread(this);
    first.start();
    public void run(){
    while (first != null) {
    findTarg();
    try {
    Thread.sleep(sleeper);
    } catch (InterruptedException e) { }
    public void findTarg(){
    if(go == true){

    if(x < xTarg)x++;
    if(x > xTarg)x--;
    if(y < yTarg)y++;
    if(y > yTarg)y--;
    repaint();
    if((x == xTarg)&&(y == yTarg))go = false;
    public boolean mouseDown(Event evt, int x, int y) {
    xTarg= x;
    yTarg= y;

    return true;

    Hi shiil,
    To move the documents between site collection, content organizer rules would be a recommended method, you can activate Content Organizer features to enable content organizer rules on the site, to root the document to another site collection.
    Also, for this issue, as Prasath suggested, you can check out the document in the ItemAdded event, then add ItemCheckedout event, in the ItemCheckedout event, delete the document. Or as content organizer rule does, you can create your own timer job to move
    the document.

  • Policies, JDBC and applets

    I have looked all over the WWW for info on this and have found loads of questions but not one clear cut answer. It's amazing the number of "OK, thanks, I got it working" without saying how. Here is my problem. I have a JDBC applet, running on IE. If I run it locally it works like a champ. If I run it through "localhost:xxx.html I get that infamous "Unable to connect to MySQL on localhost:3306, are you sure it's running..Java.security.accesscontrol exception. One problem mentioned setting a policy..didn't mention which one though. So I set socket connection priv on localhost:3306 as that was explicitly mentioned in the exception. Seemed like a good idea. It was but still did not solve the problem. So what I think would be really swell is if in one place there was a really good answer on how to set up an applet using JDBC under IE to work with respect to the security manager. Could someone please help?
    Thanks in Advance,
    Walt

    Hi,
    Let's first c an example of the intended functions of the two methods.
    We have an HTML-type document, "document.html" at:
    host_name/some_directory/document.html
    and we have our applet, "OurApplet.class" at:
    host_name/some_directory/applets/OurApplet.class
    In the "document.html", we have embedded "OurApplet.class" inside. Then getDocumentBase().toString() should supposedly be:
    host_name/some_directory/document.html
    and getCodeBase().toString() should supposedly be:
    host_name/some_directory/applets/OurApplet.class
    If the directories containing the HTML document and the applet were the same, both methods would give the same thing; if they r not, it'd be like the above.
    Ok, the above is the way they'r intended to be. According to the bug ChuckBing has shown us (actually the methods r under the class java.applet.Applet instead of under the package java.applet), the two methods however produce what their counterpart friends is supposed to produce. So if your version of SDK/JRE produces the bugged version of the output, u can replace the method with its counterpart friend. However, keep in mind of the target JRE the applet will be run on and the possibility of more than one potential audience JREs.

    Though it seems odd, registry changes can be applied more easily ..So, given the choice
    change the HTML on the server, once for each applet, or
    change the Windows registry database on the client PCs, once for each client PC
    you would go for changing the Windows registry database on every client PC.
    Interesting.
    What about client PCs that have a different operating system?
    Do you know which registry changes have to be applied ?I do not know for sure there is a way to do what you want,
    it would not be the option I would go for.
    I am not in the habit of advising people to make arbitrary changes to the Windows registry database,
    maybe you can find someone who will investigate this for you on a microsoft support forum
    or on rentacoder or some such site.

  • Multiple JRE Versions on Same App Server

    Hello All,
    I have a questions in regards to installing multiple JRE's on the same SAP Application Server.
    Background:
    We currently have an SAP HCM ABAP-only application which will be sitting on a Windows Server 2008 box w/SQL Server backend. The current JRE is 1.4.2 as recommended by SAP for sapinst. What we are trying to achieve is to install the standalone JCo client 3.0 (Java connector) which will be required for a Novell IDM integration (as the HCM is ABAP only - we require JCo standalone client to properly interface). JCo 3.0 requires JRE 5 or 6 as per SAP (we want to install 6).
    So.... to my original questions:
    1) Is anyone aware of any negative impact or deterrent from SAP Support in regards to having multiple JRE's: JRE 1.4.2 as well as JRE 6 installed on the application server? We will obviously have the env variables point to JRE 6 for the JCo Client.
    2)  I am also wondering if it is OK to do this, and simply update the variable path back to the 1.4.2 JRE in cases where we need to run sapinst (refreshes, etc)?
    Any insight will be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
    Tyler

    Hi Tyler,
    In my opinion, you could go ahead with first option - have multiple JRE's and maintain the environment variables accordingly.
    This should not be a problem as the envrionment variable would take care of which JRE is used. Also as you have only another ABAP system on the same server, the other older JRE would only be required during the SAPInst operations. Non-existence of a Java system makes things simpler here

  • Multiple jre versions using same cache location

    Hi,
    i searched the web but couldnt find an answer.
    I have a Terminal Server deployment with various installed jre Versions (1.6x and 1.7x) on the same Server as well as on different Server Silo Setups.
    But for all Servers i configured the Cache Location to H:\Java-Cache (Homefolder of the user) in the deployment.properties file.
    1. are there any Problems to expect when using the same Cache Folder for many different jre Versions (jre 6/7/8) ? Any knows issues about that ?
    2. is it supported to share the same cache Location (for example D:\java-cache) for many users ? i cannot find ony official KB or Oracle Note about this.
    There are a few Blog Article out there which describe to configure the Cache Location on a terminal Server to a local location like D:\java-cache shared by
    many users. Does it depent on the Java webstart application if tha works well ?
    Thanks a lot,
    Marcus
