Multiple Leopard Servers - DNS Setup

Hi guys,
Just wandering what I need to do when setting up more than one server on the network with my DNS settings.
I already have a leopard server box, running advanced with DNS setup and working correctly. How do I setup the second server?
Do I create a machine record on the original server, as if the new server is just another network device, and not turn on dns on the new server?
Thanks,
Nige

"If you like you can add a NS record for the new machine/DNS name, set the new machine up as a secondary/slave DNS and allow for zone transfers in the first primary/master one. "
hmm, I think I follow.
"The second one should use the same forwarders as the first one (both machines should only use itself as the DNS in Network prefpane) and also the LAN reverse zone (*.in-addr.arpa.) should be zone transfered to the secondary DNS."
Are there instructions on setting up a secondary DNS?
"In DHCP setup also add the second machine/DNS IP so clients can use either/both."
I'm not running DHCP on the server, so I'm not sure what I can do here.
I guess I'll need to do a similar thing with directory as a well, so that both servers have the same users and groups.

  • Snow Leopard Server DNS setup

Where is there a step by step setup for making my Snow Leopard Server with DNS? Essentially, I am looking to setup a mail server but seem to be missing what information I need to gather from the folks that host my domain and how to point traffic to my network.

When I started setting up my first Mac OS X Servers a few years ago I had to completely retrain my brain because the MacOS does not follow the traditional nomenclature of Windows Active Directory and DNS setup. That being said like AD for Windows MacOS relies very very heavily on a healthy and properly running DNS system, both internally and externally. So one great resource I found was about 10+ hours of training on Leopard Server over to Lynda.com. I think you can sign up for a month long membership but it's well worth the investment if your looking for some basics thru advanced setup of Leopard Server. Now SLS is much much easier at the setup and deployment and some of the fundamentals of the setup interface have changed greatly (as an improvement) but the videos are still very applicable.
Basically it comes down to the following steps in order to get your website/e-mail/wiki services working.
    1. Purchase your .whatever with a registrar, godaddy, doster, network solutions ect...
    2. Make sure you have a fully routable PUBLIC IP address from your ISP that you can assign to the WAN (internet side of your router)
    3. Contact your ISP and ask then to create an rDNS entry for your .something to the IP address they assigned you. Usually this will look like xxx.xxx.xxx ---> mail.mydomain.com when you test later on.
    4. Modify the DNS records with your registrar to point the MX & A record to your new IP. You will log in create an A record for mail.mydomain.com ---> xxx.xxx.xxx (your public IP on router) and then you will create an MX record for e-mail which will simply be mail.mydomain.com with a value of 10 (there is usually a screen for this).
    5. Once all the DNS is setup and working properly (Can take several days for these changes to take affect and be visible by your ISP) then you can begin the configuration of your router. You will need to determine what IP internally you want your Mac to be. Usually 10.0.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 or other and document that. Program your router to port forward ports 25,110, 80, 143 to the IP that you decided your Mac will be at so those services will be publicly available to you to user. Otherwise nobody will ever be able to send you e-mail or visit your site.
    6. This is a good time to check your work and settings by visiting www.mxtoolbox.com and you verify your rDNS (setup by ISP) and your DNS (Setup by you) before beginning your setup of OS X SLS. If everything checks out then start the install if not STOP HERE and fix it because it will haunt you in the long run.
    7. Start the install of SLS and at some point the system will get you to the screens at which you input your domain information. If all was setup properly up to now SLS will auto-populate the domain and local hostname of your Mac Server. U can change the local hostname if you wish but the domain name information should reflect your rDNS and A record information of mail.mydomain.com and you can hit next and proceed with the rest of the install.
    8. Once up and running you will need to make a small adjustment to the alias of your e-mail. For some reason the engineers at Apple left a flaw in (my opinion) that is as such. Whenever you send e-mail it will go as [email protected] instead of what you really want which is [email protected]. So follow this post below and you will be all fixed up in a jiffy.

  • Installing multiple Application Servers using setup

    Hi there,
I successfully installed SunONE application Server on my machine. I wish to install a completely new Application Server in a different directory, however using the setup GUI - when I get to the "Select Components" screen, all options are greyed out and I cannot continue.
I have already created a new domain in the original install and deleted the default "domain1" domain, however it seems that there can only be one installation of Appserver 7.0 on a machine.
    Is this correct?
If not, how do I install this a second time?
    Regards
    Brian.

With the full version of the product (non evaluation copy) that installs as root on your unix environment, you can only have one install image. That is not a problem it is designed that way.
You can have as many admin domains as you wish on a server. With the PE version, you can only have one instance per domain. With the SE version this restriction is lifted. You can put those domains anywhere you want and have them owned by any user (as long as asadmin create-domain is run as root)
For assistance you and get help from asadmin:
    # ./asadmin help create-domain
    User Commands create-domain(1)

created. If specified, path must be accessible in the
filesystem. If not specified, the domain is created under
    $AS_DOMAINS_PATH directory.
--sysuser owner of the domain directory. Must be
a valid user on the system (Solaris only). The
domain is created under the specified system username.
If not specified, the current username is used.
    --passwordfile file containing passwords
appropriate for the command (e.g., administrative instance).
--adminport port of the administrative instance.
The port number cannot be currently active.
--adminuser user name assoicated with the administrative instance.
--adminpassword password associated with the administrative name.
    OPERANDS
domain_name name of the domain. Must be a unique name.

  • Help with Proper DNS Setup for Leopard Standard Server Setup

    Hello All,
    Problem Description-
I was reviewing some training today on DNS setup and checking for proper setup with the sudo changeip - checkhostname tool and I seem to have an incorrectly configured DNS setup. So I need some help on correcting it. When I go to the "Server Preferences" tool I cannot log in using apple.ourdomainname.com instead in order to use the tool I have to input localhost as the server name. Now I just thought that the system was broken or something and with the help of my training I now see it's a DNS problem. I thought I had everything proper since I followed the steps of creating proper DNS/RDNS entries with my ISP. Now I am stuck wondering what else isn't working properly due to the DNS issue. Thanks in advance.
    Technical Info-
My ISP provides us with 5 static IP's and we have asked them to create entries and verified the setup of apple.ourdomainname.com = x.x.x.x which is one of our public IP's assigned currently assigned to the WAN port of our Apple Airport Extreme. We have also had them create a PTR record which also is present, verified and functional. Our MacMini running 10.5.5 is connected directly to one of the ethernet ports on our Apple Airport Extreme which is our NAT/Firewall for the LAN. So during the setup of the Standard Server install the OS configured the Airport with the required ports for chat/web/vpn. And mobile Mac's can VPN in and gain folder access and web works fine too. We don't use the e-mail portion so I can't say how that works. The server is using the DNS of 10.0.200.1 which is the IP of the Airport and the airport is programmed with the DNS of OpenDNS servers 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220. The reason for this whole long shpeal is that I want to give as much technical background as possible for the best possible help.
    Thanks
    DM

What happens when you use 'Localhost' instead of 'localhost' (i.e. capitalizing the 'L')?

  • Can I setup multiple SMTP servers / emails with one IMAP servers on the iPh

All my email arrives at one place, on one IMAP server. However I have 2 email addresses, and need to use a different SMTP server for each one. How to setup this on the iPhone? This is what I considered so far:
    1. I don't see how to enter multiple addresses for the same account, and map each address to a SMTP server.
    2. If I create multiple accounts, I have to enter multiple IMAP server, and the iPhone doesn't let me enter the same IMAP server information for different accounts.
    3. I could create a second account with a dummy IMAP/POP server, and a real SMTP server. But then most likely if I respond to mails that arrive on my IMAP server (1st account), Mail will always use my 1st email address when responding. Instead I'd like it to automatically pick as From the To address of the mail I am responding to (as the desktop Mail.app does).
    Alex

If you have multiple SMTP servers available, you can select from one of the available SMTP servers for a particular account.
After you've entered the SMTP server for the first account when creating the 1st account and you've entered the SMTP server for a 2nd account when creating the 2nd account, you'll have both SMTP servers available to use with either or both accounts.

  • LDAP External Authentication Multiple Search Base DNs question

    hi,
im trying two add two LDAP search DNs to a portal 6.2 organisation.
with one search base dn it works fine.
when i add another, all ldap auth for that org stops working.
the docs confusingly state that if you have multiple search dns (not talking about multiple ldap servers here - just the search base dns) that you should prefix each entry with the local server name. the docs however provide no examples of the syntax.
can anyone provide an example for multiple search dns? e.g. is it <server:port>:o=<etc> (doesn't seem to work).
    thanks

    hi,
yes i have.. but when you enter more than one it stop working... with only one entry in the gui it will work for that entry but when you add another it stops working...
i had to use a manual workaround like this to get the second going... :(
    External ldap authentication
register the LDAP authentication service in the gui and setup the first DN as normal.
create the first set of entries for the ldap host and the base dn in the gui as normal etc.
the gui in the admin console is not working (depending on your point of view), so you need to add the second ldap config manually -
All commands are run from the /apps/jes/SUNWam/bin directory
    1. Get an encrypted value for the bind dns (cn=Directory Manager) password you want to bind to the ldap directory as by using the ampassword utility shipped with Identity Server.
    ./ampassword -e directory_manager password
More information on this utility can be found in the Sun ONE Identity Server Administration Guide.
    2. Copy the encrypted password as the value for the iplanet-am-auth-ldap-bind-passwd in the XML file (serviceAddMultipleLDAPConfigurationRequests.xml) created in Step 1. The XML file contains a template for creating the second LDAP DN.
    3. Modify the data XML file accordingly so that the relevant details are provided for the 2nd ldap server (bind dn search base etc) and load this into the portal directory using the amadmin command line tool as follows from the /opt/SUNWam/bin directory
    ./amadmin -u amadmin -w administrator_password -v -t serviceAddMultipleLDAPConfigurationRequests.xml
If the imported xml values are incorrect delete and reload the imported xml data using amadmin command tool. Alternatively you can modify the ldap data directly on the primary identity server (ldap server) using a client browser though this method is not supported .
You should be able to see new imported values for the second ldap server at dn:ou=subconfig1,ou=default,ou=OrganizationConfig,ou=1.0,ou=iPlanetAMAuthLDAP
Service,ou=services,ou=ORG,o=lgaq.qld.gov.au on the primary ldap server (where ORG is the organisation you wanted to add the second DN).

  • DNS setup on portable clients

I have what must be an embarassingly simple problem. Unfortunately, I have not been able to locate an answer anywhere.
We have a simple wireless office network behind a DSL modem. The server is a new Mac Mini set up on one of the wireless router's ethernet ports, so it is not used as a gateway to the internet. The server is used for calendar sharing, the wiki functions, file sharing and the directory services.
The client computers are three MacBook Pros, all set up identically and all connected to the server.
The server has a fixed internal ip address, 10.0.0.7. When I first connected the client machines to the servers, the setup application added 10.0.0.7 as a DNS server in the AirPort settings. From what I understand, that makes perfect sense, since that is where the internal mapping is done to resolve the address for the iCal server and presumably also the other server functions.
However, when we take our computers out of the office and connect to other networks, this is way less than ideal. AirPort now appears to look for a DNS server at 10.0.0.7, which it obviously will not find. This causes long delays in all network access situations. Removing that DNS server entry immediately resolves the problem, of course, but I'd much prefer to have this change done automatically. Unfortunately, I can't find any way to automatically adjust the DNS server list depending on what network AirPort happens to be attached to at the moment.
As the observant reader will surely have noticed by now, I am very much a beginner in this world of clients and servers. Presently, we do not have a static ip address at work, so we can't access the office server externally.
Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Are you using DHCP for your client configurations? If so, you shouldn't need to set DNS servers in the clients - just let them take the settings from the DHCP server.
If you're not using DHCP then the classic solution to this is to create two Locations in System Preferences -> Network.
One of the Locations will have the settings for your office network, the other will have the settings for a public network. You'd need this anyway since the 10.x.x.x client address wouldn't be valid outside of the network anyway.
Once you have multiple locations you can switch between them via the Location menu in the Apple menu. If you want an automatic switch, check out Marco Polo which can make automatic Location selections based on heuristics like available wireless networks, date/time, and even connection peripherals.

  • DNS Setup/View external website internally

Greetings all - trying to set up a Mac server from scratch for the first time. Been managing one for a while but didn't actually set it up myself.
I have the beginnings of DNS setup all squared away, but am still looking to figure out how to properly set up my website. Here's my setup. We used to have a joint Windows 2003/10.5 server environment. Windows handled Exchange and DNS, the Leopard box handled everything else (DHCP, web, file sharing, etc). We're transitioning everything to the Mac box in preparation for setting up Kerio MailServer and just to ditch the windows box.
I own companyname.net - that domain is hosted externally by Network Solutions. It's forwarded to my static IP.
Our old internal DNS was hosted by a Windows 2003 box - it had zones for companyname.ltd (the private internal domain) and companyname.net. companyname.ltd was the nameserver. There were two A records handling the website for internal clients - one with a blank name, and one with www. Both pointed to the IP of the Mac server (the current box that I'm transitioning everything to). Everything was hunky dory - internal pings to the web address went to the internal ip, externally it went to the external IP, and everything worked just great.
So in setting up the new DNS on the Leopard box, here's what I have so far.
    Primary zone: companyname.net
A Record: macpro : 192.168.1.3 (this is the name of the server)
A Record: mail : 192.168.1.2 (our mail server)
    Alias : ichat : macpro.winstongroup.net
The checkhostname thing works fine, Kerberos is up and running, as is Open Directory.
Now, I do not know how to set up our website so that internal clients can view the external website. I tried creating an A record to the server for www, but then that overrides the macpro A record that is the host of the whole thing. I also tried creating A records to the external IP, but then when I pinged it just pinged once, then it seemed like the firewall kicked in and stopped it. I tried creating aliases to companyname.net but every time I did that, Server Admin kept adding on an additional companyname.net to the end of the name (so it would read like companyname.netcompanyname.net). That didn't make much sense to me.
I'm sure there's other people who can view internally hosted sites from the lan - so any help would be very much appreciated!

One minor other question. I prefer the url of our site to be companyname.net instead of www.companyname.net. So now, while www is set up as a server alias, it wouldn't direct to companyname.net, even though that URL was set up in the web services panel in Server Admin. I then created a new alias that was "companyname.net", without the trailing period so it was not a FQDM, directed it at the same web server, and everything seemed to work. Does that seem right - it's working, so it seems to be somewhat right at least!

You are running an internal DNS server presumably but don't have these hostnames (A-NAME or C-NAME records) set on external DNS servers.
If you run a whois on your domain you can find our who hosts the DNS for the domain if you don't already know. Often DNS hosting companies will have web based tools for you to edit the DNS entries yourself or alternatively you may need to email them and ask them to create the records.
It sounds like you would like to point the addresses ubuntu.domain.com and win.domain.com to the IP address 92.62.26.10 as well. To do this you will have to make sure the services running on each box use a different port to one another. (I.e. You cannot have something running on port 80 on both servers).
Depending on your router also you may only be able to do basic forwarding (I.e. Port 80 forwards to Mac.domain.com; port 443 forwards to ubuntu.domain.com; port 25 forwards to win.domain.com).
If you need more flexibility you may need to get more external IP addresses.

  • ISE Not Identifying AD Group Attributes when using Multiple ISE Servers

So we have multiple ISE Servers with differing personas. I was having an issue with our new ISE setup not identifying AD Group Attributes when using them in Authorization rules.
We have 2- 3395 appliances running Admin and Monitoring/Troubleshooting Personas and 2- 3395 appliances running as Policy server personas. We are running  v1.1.1.268 with the latest two patches.
I was unable to pull Active Directory Group Attributes in any of my Authorization rules. After Resyncing all the boxes with the Primary Administration box I was able to do this. There is no bug listings for this occurance nor do we have Smartnet to call support for other reasons. I thought this might be useful to someone who is having the same issue and is unable to figure it out with TAC

Absolutely. All units said in-sync after setting their personas.
    Here is our layout:
    ISE-ADM-01  Admin-Primary, Monitoring-Secondary
    ISE-ADM-02  Admin-Secondary, Monitoring-Primary
    ISE-PDP-01  Policy Only
    ISE-PDP-02  Policy Only
I synced one at a time starting with ADM-02. After completing the other two boxes. Active Directory Attribs were pulled down when using them in the Ext Group within my Authz rules.

  • Problem sending mail to hostname with multiple IN A DNS Records

    Hi there
I've been using the javamail API without problems for some 2 years now in the company I'm working for.
The problems started this week, when the hostname I'm using to send out mails via SMTP, now has multiple 'IN A' DNS records, but allthough all of them respond to a 'ping' only some of them (as of today) accepts a connection on port 25.
The problem is now, that I get random sending errors whenever the DNS lookup of hostname resolves to an IP where no SMTP server is listening on port 25.
    I have the following questions:
First of all: Is there an RFC (or other standard behavior) that say a SMTP client should behave like that (throw an exception if the first connection of an round robin DNS lookup fails)? I known that real SMTP servers work more with DNS MX records to find an alternative server, if the first server is unavailable. But javamail is more like a SMTP client, not a fully blown SMTP server.
What is the best way to solve this problem (if the Mailserver/DNS guys aren't cooperative)? I saw that you can pass a custom SocketFactory via properties to javamail. So would the proper solution be to implement a custom SocektFactory, that resolves all the different IP addresses for a hostname, and only returns a Socket, to which address and port it actually could get a connection.
    Sorry for my bad english
    -Reto

Have you talk to your network or server administrator to find out why your server is only
accepting connections on some IP addresses, even though it's returning all of them via
DNS lookups? Seems like a mistake to me.
If, for some strange reason, this behavior is on purpose, your socket factory idea may
    be the best approach.
Also check whether there is a different DNS name you can use for the server that will
resolve to the IP address where it will accept connections.

  • OAM Webgate - webgate agent point to multiple Access Servers?

I am trying to find out if it is possible to have a single webgate agent on OHS server point to more than one OAM server.
We have multiple OAM servers (not clustered) behind a load balancer. When I set up an agent for the OHS server, I copy the cwallet.sso and ObAccessClient.xml from, for example, OAM server 1. The OAM servers are all setup the same.
It seems the cwallet.sso is tied directly to that OAM server, and if I try to point the OHS to server 2, I get errors. I change the ObAccessClient.xml to the url specified in the load balancer.
Is it possible to have one set of files (cwallet.cco and ObAccessClient.xml) that would work on different OAM servers?
    thanks in advance.
    Mark

In that case, the default behaviour is that a WebGate cannot connect to an OAM server in a different installation (different to the one it is registered in).
However, this functionality is available in a Multi-Data Centre architecture, details of which can be found here: Using Multi-Data Centers - 11g Release 2 (11.1.2.2)
I think this may meet your requirements?

    Resolution:
Proxying to different weblogic instances with one IIS Server can be
accomplished by using IIS Virtual Directories.
    a) Create a Web site and two virtual directories for it.
    b) Create two directories for the two virtual directories and copy
iisproxy.dll to each of the directories.
    c) Create iisproxy.ini files in each directory created at step b. One
for proxying to WebLogic Server A and another for WebLogic Server B.
    d) Register each iisproxy.dll to each of the virtual directories with
IIS by specifying the appropriate mime-type. If you want to proxy everything
for that virtual directory, then you will specify a mime-type of *.
Please note that specifying a mime-type of * will not work with IIS 4.
    e) Make sure you set the Application Protection to HIGH for each
    Virtual Directory.

  • Forwarding requests to multiple weblogic servers

    Hi,
I have two applications running on two different Weblogic servers and wish to
use one Apache web server as a front end interface. I can forward the requests
from apache to one weblogic server using apache-weblogic bridge.
Is it possible to forward requests to either one of the weblogic servers based
    on some conditions?
How do we put IF/ELSE IF type constructs in apache configuration file so that
it can get requests for both the weblogic servers and then forward the request
to one of the weblogic servers ? Conditions can be anything like some particular
path, some data in request header, some constant in apache conf file etc
    Thanks in advance.
    Mandar

    Issue:
How can IIS 4 or IIS 5 be setup to proxy from one IIS server to
    multiple WLS servers.
    For example:
    http://iisserver/myapp --> proxy http://wls1:7001/test
    http://iisserver/myapp2 --> proxy http://wls2:7001/test
