Multiple Superdrives failed

Hi everyone,
Just wanted to chime in on the subpar quality of the Superdrives in the 1st-gen 15" Macbook Pro. (Not to mention two failed fans and a currently failing backlight - but that's another story).
After about 2 months, the first Superdrive in my MBP failed. It would only read a disk every 10 times or so, wouldn't read or write DVDs at all. I had an Apple certified 3rd party shop replace it.
Now the new one has failed, 2 months in. It's getting power, but the laptop doesn't even recognize that the drive is there. System profiler says "No burning device found". I tried multiple reboots and the power management reset suggested somewhere on this site, but no luck.
I rely heavily on this machine, and like many others here have a hard time getting by when it's away a week at a time. It's extremely irritating that something I bought for peace of mind (AppleCare) instead seems to have been an absolute necessity.

I bought my first Mac on August. Everything was great on the Macbook Pro everything worked fine....But like you My superdrive is failing I can only read dvds/cds now....its just been degrading. How long did it take them to repair the superdrive?
It's over xmas right now but I, like you, rely a lot on my mac
Chris

  • Superdrive failing do copy music onto macbook and burn to CD-RW cds

    My Macbooks superdrive is failing to import songs from cd, in the processing of doing it, it just stops and doesnt continue..also I always get a error message when buring music on to CD-RW discs, is my superdrive broken?

    My superdrive fails to load/play CDs similar to the above complaints. The CD is inserted and I can hear the drive "rev up" about 3 times and then ejects the CD. Strangely enough, this is sporadic. Out of a total of 10 CDs I tried today, I was able to successfully import about half of them...and some after trying the same CD several times. I was having this problem for more than a month and took my MacBook to the Genius Bar at our local Apple Store for replacement. They replaced it and before I left the store put in a DVD which worked fine. Of course, I didn't think to have them try a music CD. I have another appointment at the Genius Bar tomorrow. I'll keep you posted if there is another solution.

  • Anybody know why superdrives fail after upgrading os

    anybody know why superdrives fail after upgrading os

    Upgrading the OS often also triggers issues with PRAM.  If the PRAM battery is over 4 years old, then the Superdrive can fail.    If it is under 4 years old, zapping it can fix some issues like these.

    My superdrive failed on my imac so i purchased an external superdrive but my imac doesnt recognise it. any reason?

    You have given us zero information to go on:
    What Mac with what version of OS X?
    What external Superdrive and how is it connected to the Mac?

  • G5 Superdrive failing?

    Never had a problem with my Superdrive until last night.
    It started first when I tried to burn a CD of some Mp3s. The drive would open, then shut almost imediately, then iTunes would hang, and it would take multiple Force Quits to get it to quit.
    I rebooted, then tried to just mount a piece of media to burn a data CD.
    Whenever I try to open the drive to insert media, it will open off the keyboard, then almost immediately it will shut, making it impossible to get a piece of media in it.
    Do you think the drive is failing? It seems more like a software thing as, as it was originally making iTunes crash.
    Again, I never had a single issue with it until yesterday.

    Matthias,
    I never knew Media Access Control chips needed batteries:
    http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=-1&messageID=2441666
    Anyway, your mileage may vary on batteries. It is true some machines don't need new clock batteries much longer than others.

  • Multiple Applications failing to launch in Mac OSX Mavericks

    Hi there,
    I recently updated my Mac Pro to Mac OSX Mavericks (OS X 10.9.2), and since that time, I have experienced multiple applications in my Adobe CC Subscription failing to launch. As a first step, I attempted to uninstall the applications so that I could reinstall them and see if that fixed the problem. However, when I go to uninstall the applications, I get the same message (crash report) that I get when I attempt to launch them, so I'm unable to uninstall the applications.
    I'm not sure what the protocal is, or where I can send the crash reports to get a better idea of what is going wrong. Below I've listed a series of applications that are failing to launch, then the applications that are launching and running perfectly fine, along with some information about the computer I'm running on to see if the hardware might be out-of-date and adding to the problem.
    Thanks in advance for any help you can offer and I look forward to hearing from anyone that could provide some insight!

  • Adding Bootcamp Partition, on SuperDrive failing Macbook 2011 Early

    I need to install my Windows License on my Macbook Pro 2011 Earyl, Lion. My SuperDrive began to fail nearly a month ago. My goal is to try install windows from an USB Windows 7 Bootable, helping me with rEFIt. Initiating process when trying to make my partition (with Bootcamp assistant, Bootcamp updated) I found that it doesn't allow me to make partition because 'Boot camp couldn't find a Windows CD on the CD Drive, please insert a CD...', something like it, my SuperDrive is failing and rejects whatever CD I insert, but that's not the problem, by now the issue I find is to be allowed to make a partiition in the same way as OSX allow for Air and new Macbooks without SuperDrive unit. I've heard that BootCamp 4.0 allow making partition without inserting a CD, I've tried locate Bootcamp 4.0 in Apple downloads but I don't find, to downgrade... I've searched over Apple, forums over internet, tried and tried, many ways, and now I'm tired with this. Actually I live in a remote place, dont have access to anyone with an external CD Drive, it could make it easier, I know. I tried too make a partition with Disk Utility, but it didn´t worked... Please help me, I'm very dissapointed with this case. Thanks, a lot of thanks in advance.
    PD. I've read about a fail design in SuperDrive for Macbooks Pro, anyway I will ask for warranty.

    This may be an old post, but for those still looking for an answer you can get the 13.12 (December 2013) AMD graphics driver from https://www.dropbox.com/sh/915fpdtgbgoksct/kOY7bKHgKq Select "Download->Download as .zip".
    I only modded the driver for the windows 7 64-bit install, so if you using windows 8 under bootcamp you'll have to follow the included instructions yourself.
    Please let me know/like this post if this works for you. (It would be great if you could report whether it worked based on using Win 7 or Win 8)

  • Superdrive Fails To Load DVDs

    Everytime I try to insert a DVD (feature film DVD) into my Superdrive, it fails to spin up and ends up spitting the disc back out. After 5 or 6 attempts, it finally spins up and mounts the disc. Why is this???

    Has the drive always done this or is it new behavior? Which Superdrive do you have?
    If this only happens with commercial videos, are they perhaps
    rentals? Rental dvd's can be in pretty wretched shape and different drives can compensate for this to different degrees.
    Some drives are better readers with better error correction
    circuitry.
    If they are discs that are in perfect shape I would wonder about the dvd read assembly. You could try a cleaning disk.
    It could just be that the read assembly on the dvd side is bad. Not an uncommon problem (I had it with the original Sony drive in my MacPro and Apple replaced it > haven't heard of it happening much with the Pioneer drives).
    Have you tried reading non-video discs with the MacPro that were burned by another machine? A bad drive can often read its own burns but not those made on another machine.

  • MBP Superdrive fail to read work-around!

    I have discovered a bizarro work-around to get the data off of your backup DVD's if your MBP Superdrive is failing to read properly.
    I have a brand new 17" MBP Core 2 machine and the DVD will not read any more than the first half of the files on my backup DVD disks from my old PowerBook which i no longer available to use for xfer.
    When all my backup DVD's exhibited the same problem (will copy about 2G of data and then fail with file read error) I suspected the drive rather than the media (I also saw discussions here).
    I inserted a movie DVD to see if it would fail to play that as well, but the commercial movie DVD worked fine, even through the final credits. That seemed strange. I reinserted the backup DVD I had just been struggling with, and it now read the files that failed several minutes before! I now got 9/10 the way through the DVD before it again struggled and then failed to read a file.
    Replacing the DVD with the movie, I again ran the credits at the end of the movie for a few moments, then ejected it and replaced it with the 'bad' DVD. I could then read the last few files off of it. I continued with this silly '"manual dexterity test" (remember this test from the days of the original 128K Macintosh with a single floppy disk drive?), and got through all 7 of my iTunes backup DVDs. I think I lost maybe 3 to 5 songs to bad DVD tracks, so that was a 99.9999% success rate, rather than a less than 50% success rate that I started out with.
    The important points in the process are:
    - this obviously won't work with a "multi-DVD single file" DVD like from using the Apple Backup application. It does work for me for DVD's with > 800 big files on it;
    - running the movie DVD seems to "re-set" the Superdrive's heads to the correct positions;
    - the heads then gradually run astray after more reads, and can't read the data DVD properly after another ~400 files (1 - 2G) or so (your milage may vary);
    - when you hear the Superdrive come to a halt, that means you're toast again and it's time to swap out the data DVD for the movie DVD;
    - when you go for the next try on your data DVD, don't futz around getting onies-twosies files - select and go for the entire remaining batch - you have nothing to lose;
    - after a successful copy of nnn files with no error message, IMMEDIATELY grab more files and drag and drop them as quickly as possible. Don't let the Superdrive stop spinning or you are again toast, and it's time to eject and run the movie DVD again for a minute;
    - it's VERY IMPORTANT that when you get the first Finder "can't read file" error to click Ok and then IMMEDIATELY eject the DVD. Don't click on the Finder window, try to scroll up the list of files, deselect files or do anything else, otherwise the poor Finder will grind away for another 10 minutes trying to complete whatever it's doing to redisplay the current list of the directory on the DVD!
    - If there is a bad file, you will have to skip it on the next cycle of read attempts - I couldn't get it to read a few files that were obviously corrupt to begin with. However, you should try to re-read the file it fails on at least once - I was successful in re-reading the file it failed on > 95% of the time!
    I hope this convoluted work-around works for you if you are desperately seeking backup data!
    Regards,
    Walter Cooke

    what does the "reset" input do? check its polarity vs what the rst block expects, or better yet, just connect ext_reset_in to fclk_reset0_n.
    as to why you don't see anything when you write to unaligned addresses is that your program silently crashes as axi-lite slaves don't implement them and return an error which you are not catching.

  • Running ssl client from multiple applications fails in Sap j2ee engine

    There are two applications making ssl connections to third party.
    At a time only one application is able to make connection while other
    throws error message <b>"No trusted certificate found".</b>
    Currently we have  two j2ee applications running in SAP j2ee server. Both applications makes ssl connection to third party servers. Lets call first application as A1 and second application as A2.
    A1 is an internet shopping application . It makes ssl connection to third party services at two places . One is while fetching the shipping charges from UPS site.
    Code Snippet:
    java.security.Security.addProvider(new com.sun.net.ssl.internal.ssl.Provider());
    System.getProperties().put("java.protocol.handler.pkgs", "com.sun.net.ssl.internal.www.protocol");
    String lo_url = new URL("https://wwwcie.ups.com/ups.app/xml/Rate");
    lo_connection = (URLConnection) lo_url.openConnection();
    At other place A1 connects to cybersource service using webservice +ssl  for credit card authentication using cybersource API. It uses certificate in p12 format.
    Code Snippet:
    com.cybersource.ws.client.axis.soap.RequestMessage lo_requestMessage = new  com.cybersource.ws.client.axis.soap.RequestMessage();
    Properties lo_cybsProperties = new Properties();
    lo_cybsProperties.setProperty("merchantId","arvato");
    lo_cybsProperties.setProperty("merchantRefCode","1234")
    lo_requestMessage.setMerchantID( "arvato");
    lo_requestMessage.setMerchantReferenceCode( "1234" );
    lo_cybsProperties.setProperty("cybersourceURL","https://ics2wstest.ic3.com/commerce/1.x/transactionProcessor");
    lo_cybsProperties.setProperty("keysDir", "./WEB-INF/config");
    lo_requestMessage.setBillTo(setBillToAddress(po_mdsBillingAddress) );
    // add ship to address
    lo_requestMessage.setShipTo(setShipToAddress(po_mdsShiToAddress));
    lo_requestMessage.setPurchaseTotals( setPurchaseTotal() );
    //set cc details
    lo_requestMessage.setCard( setCardDetails(po_mdsCreditCard) );
    Set Items and total tax calculation
    lo_replyMessage = com.cybersource.ws.client.axis.soap.Client.runTransaction( lo_requestMessage, lo_cybsProperties );
    A2 Application
    This application connects to Motorola secured web service to fetch details of mobile hand set. It uses keystore to create ssl connection with Motorola webservice.
    Code Snippet
    try {
    TrustManager[] trustAllCerts = new TrustManager[]{
    new X509TrustManager() {
    public java.security.cert.X509Certificate[] getAcceptedIssuers() {

    SSLContext sc = SSLContext.getInstance("SSL");
    sc.init(null, trustAllCerts, new java.security.SecureRandom());
    } catch (Exception e) {
    e.printStackTrace();

    System.setProperty("javax.net.ssl.trustStorePassword","xxxx");
    System.setProperty("javax.net.ssl.keyStore","SapWSM.keystore");
    System.setProperty("javax.net.ssl.keyStorePassword","xxxx");
    Problem Cases :
    Case 1
    Step 1 : Server starts
    Step 2 : User access A1 first
    Step3: A1 Connects to UPS using https (It is able to connect)
    Step4: A1 connects to cybersource using webservice+ssl  (It is able to connect)
    Step 5: Another user access A2
    Step6: A2 tries connection to Motorola webservice over ssl
    Result connectivity fails with description "No trusted certificate found".

  • Macbook Pro 13 inch (Mid 2010) Superdrive failing

    Hi, I've thought my Superdrive to be broken for over a year now and have just been to lazy or poor to buy a replacement. However after upgrading to Mavericks I decided to have a go at it and successfully burned a CD though iTunes. It worked flawlessly. Then I went to iDVD to burn a project I finished months ago to a DVD and it was a pretty big movie (3.5GB) so it should've taken awhile but it finished in about 10 minutes. The drive ejected the disc and I put in in my DVD player to watch it and only a short part of it actually got burned to the disc. The problem is, it seems the Superdrive does work but after a short amount of time it will just stop spinning and whatever it was working on it just assumes is finished and ejects the disc. It seems it will work just long enough to burn a CD but not much longer than that. Anyone having (or had) a similar issue? If there is some way of repairing it so I don't have to buy a new one I'm all ears. I'm perfectly willing to open up my Macbook and mess around with the Superdrive if necessary, I recently had to replace my SATA cable and in the future will replace my battery. I'm not afraid to take stuff apart I just want to know if there is a solution. And no I don't have AppleCare.
    Thanks,
    Ricky

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
    You need to install the Windows support software in Windows to make it run properly. You have to download and install these drivers in Windows > http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1630?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
    After installing them, I recommend you to look for a newer GPU driver

  • B2B Inbound File with Multiple Transactions failing

    Hi ,
    Problem Summary: When the inbound file is coming with multiple transactions (combination of 997 and non-997) ,
    If the 997 is the FIRST transaction in file, B2B is processing only 997 and remaning transactions are getting rejected.

  • Java Web Start and DNS with multiple IPs fails

    We have a number of servers that deploy a Web Start application. We have a DNS entry with the 3 IPs of the servers (e.g. nslookup webstart.mydomain.com returns 3 different IPs).
    This is fine for a browser (running a packet capture program e.g. Wireshark, will show each of the IPs getting tried until the file is returned).
    The problem is with javaws - it only tries the first IP returned from the DNS, and if it isn't running it fails.
    Does anyone know if there is a way to resolve this (makes it harder to fail over if our clients need different shortcuts)? (I assume that javaws just doesn't have the smarts to deal with this).
    Maybe I need to add it to my Java 7 wish list.
    Cheers,
    David

    We are trying to do the same thing for a different purpose. You need to set the override sooner than WebStart lets you... It has to be on the command line.
    We are trying to overide the default nameservice because it uses reverse dns which is slow at some of our sites. We need to set the parameter
    sun.net.spi.nameservice.provider.1=dns,sun before the VM starts using webstart. The only way we can do this is by setting the environment variable
    JAVAWS_VM_ARGS=-Dsun.net.spi.nameservice.provider.1=dns,sun on the client. This is not real easy from the server side.
    Is there any way we can make the client default to this nameservice provider? There must be some file somewhere on the client I can put this property in...

  • Subversion client: add subversion property to multiple files fails.

    File browser allows to mark multiple files and then select "add subversion property" in german schown as "Subversion Eigenschaft hinzufügen". This opens a dialog "VCS Operation" showing all selected files with columns name, location and Select. After cklicking on Ok button I get Add Property dialog and can add a property. After confirmation (OK button) only one change is processed! SVN log window shows one action too.
    Any idea how to get it work?
    In comparison: doing multiple Commits by marking multiple files work as expected.
