My G5 can't locate other computers on the network

It's weird it can find the internet and networked printers but NO other computers at all. Furthermore other computers on the network have no problem finding each other or this specific computer.
Any ideas?
There are both macs, windows, and a linux based NAS on this network.

It most certainly does explain why one wouldn't be able to see others, if it's not configured as part of a workgroup or the automounter isn't running, this single machine will not be able to mount on demand, those shares which are advertised on other hosts.
Macs are not complicated and as I see by your signon, you know something of a root account. I would think you'd feel right at home on a mac under it's covers I myself have been a real Unix sysadmin for 18 years and played on all types of enterprise hardware, believe me, Macs are easy to fiddle with. Most of the time, when someone can't see other machines using the network browser,it's because some tool disabled NFS. Check your /etc/hostconfig for the automounter line and also check in the /Library/StartupItems and make sure NFS gets hit when the box starts.
I know if I kill my automounter, all the network mounting stops.

  • Can't find other computers on the network

Ok, so I have a wrt54g wireless router thats directly connected to my main desktop pc.  I have another pc and a laptop that's set up wireless.  I'd like to link them to the main desktop so I can access files and the printer.  I can't seem to figure it out.  Does anyone on here know the steps I need to go through to do this?  The only problem I might have is that the 2 desktops are running xp pro while the laptop is Vista home basic.  Any help would be great!!!

  • We have a PC with iTunes that needs the hard drive reformatted. Right now, it can't connect to other computers on the network. Can I save my music to a thumb drive, then re-load when the computer is reformatted?

We have a Windows XP desktop with iTunes for windows. The hard drive needs to be reformatted. Right now, the computer will not connect to other computers on the network. Can I save my iTunes songs to a thumbdrive, then re-load after reformatting?  How do I do it?

Copy the entire iTunes folder out to the drive. If it is too big to go as one copy stuff over to another computer in batches. It is important to have not only the media but the library file in order to properly restore your library.
See also this User Tip. Assuming the machine won't connect to the internet you could download the SyncToy installer on another machine and then transfer it with the thumb drive. If it will connect to the net don't forget to deauthorize the machine before reformatting the hard drive.

  • Connecting to other computers on the network

I just replaced an older Belkin wireless router with the new Airport extreme. I like it very much but I cannot now figure out how to connect to other computers on the network. With the old router I just clicked on network in the finder window and all the other computers on the network showed up an dI could click on one to connect. Now I see notheng. Any ideas????

I'm getting the same problem. I used to have the snow AEBS, but about 2 weeks ago I got the new one. Never had a problem connecting to my other macs in the house through network in the finder... now, no other machines show up.
Because there's no communication or recognition of devices through AEBS, wireless printing goes out the door too. My printer is plugged in by ethernet to my house network. If I am connected by ethernet to my network, I can print, but if it's wireless, nope.
Today, I got the apple tv. I was super excited unboxing it, hooking it up... and then when I go to sync up through itunes... oh wait, it doesn't show up in the devices list because of my AEBS problem.
Anyone have any ideas? I would love to play around with apple tv so please help... thanks.

  • Laptop can't locate my C6180 on the network.

I completed a full factory reset to my HPG60t-600.  I tried to use the setup disc that came with the printer but received a "non supported" message.  So then I downloaded and ran the HP printer installation tool (HPPIW).  My printer is connected to the network as verified by its screen confirmation and Network Test Report.  My laptop is connected to the network (as verified by my ability to enter this forum),  However, the computer is unable to locate the printer on the network.  I am using MicroSoft 7 - 64 bit and printer will work when connected to the laptop with a cable.

  • Can connect to internet, but can't find other computers in my network.

I have two macs that connect to the internet via an Airport Express unit (which is setup to connect to the internet using DHCP and share a single IP address using DHCP/NAT). My problem is that the macs cannot seem to find each other in the network.
How do I setup the network so that I can share the internet connection between both macs and at the same time connect from the one mac to the other? Is that even possible with an Airport Express unit?
I have two more Airport Express units. Can I configure one of those to act as the local network bridge (or whatever the technical term for that is)
I really just want to get all my macs to talk to each other, but I cannot for the life of me figure out how All help would be greatly appreciated!

Never mind... I'm stupid... File Sharing was off... d'oh! It all works now

  • I'm seeing other computers "in the network"

    Hi, all.
I am seeing other computers, I assume picked up by the wireless internet connection, or something.
I wonder if they can "see" mine in theirs?? I'm quite concerned by this
If so, how do I "block" that, so that my computer doesn't show up in other people's networks. I don't want to "share" folders, or anything.
    Thanx !

Look in the Airport (or wireless router) preferences: you should be able to create a 'closed' network, i.e. one which doesn't broadcast its name and thus doesn't show up in the lists of networks on other computers. You should also set a WPA encryption and a safe password: and you can restrict access to your network to computers with specific MAC addresses (this is the address of the wireless card, nothing to do with Macintosh). Asa already said, you have to have File Sharing turned on before anyone can get into your computer (and they would need the account password).

  • Sharing my iTunes library with other computers on the network

    Hi Everybody,
I have an external hard disk with about 125 gigs of music on it, and I've spent a year going through it and categorizing it, and rating the songs. The hard disk is plugged into my Aiport Extreme, and communicates with my iMac just fine. My plan was to use my old windows laptop w/ iTunes, plug it into my stereo in the other room and have it pull music off the hd through the Airport, so I could have a jukebox for my stereo.
I have the windows machine communicating with the Airport and hd, so I have access to the music. I thought I might be able to get the library information if I Exported the Library to the external hd, but it did't work. Next I Exported my playlist from the Mac's iTunes, and Imported it on to the pc's. This shows my playlists, but they are all empty and there is no My Rating information.
What I would love it to do would be to have mirror playlist information on each computer, and any changes in the playlist would automatically get updated on the other computer's iTunes. for this I would think you would need your Library information at the source of the music, so on the external hard disk, and it would be shared by each computer. It'd be great if all the album covers did this too. I really don't want to have to go through all that music again on the pc, and would probably just use my iPod with my stereo if this is not possible. Any suggestions?
Forgive me if this has been written about already. Seems like someone else would have run into this too, but I couldn't find any searching through the discussions.
    Thanks, -Victor

I set my permissions as follows OS 10.4.X:
first under the original owners login, change all permissions to read & write, then change 'group' to wheel. Then change the owner from the user to system (I applied to all within ~ may not be necessary).
Start iTunes holding the Shift key and select *Choose existing library* then pick the iTunes library file you moved into the Shared directory.
In iTunes 7.5, you'll need to hold the Option key and then pick the /Users/Shared/iTunes/iTunes Music
Quit iTunes and log out of your user and let her log in.
Start iTunes holding the Shift key and select *Choose existing library* then pick the iTunes library file you moved into the Shared directory.
Now she needs to File -> *Add folder to library* and pick *My Documents*/My Music*/*iTunes*/iTunes music*.
This will add all her music to the common library.
Once this is complete, she can delete *My Documents*/My Music*/*iTunes.
Do this for all users. Any changes made by one will be seen by all.

  • Can't see other computers on network through wireless/wired OK

Our wireless clients that connect through our AP541N cannot see other computers on the network.  They can ping other computers by IP and host name and access the internet OK.  Mapped network drives can be connected initially but are very unreliable and always end up disconnecting.  Restarting the computer does not help.  When these computers are wired they see the network as expected.  Does anyone know why my wireless network would behave differently then the wired?  The wired and wireless networks are on the same VLAN.  The wireless clients are all Windows 7 systems. Thanks.

    Hi Andy,
Thank you for posting. Go to Wireless Network Setup (VAPs) and see if Station Isolation is enabled for the SSID in question. From the Help menu:
When Station Isolation is disabled, wireless clients can communicate with one another normally by sending traffic through the AP.
When Station Isolation is enabled, the AP blocks communication between wireless clients on the same VAP. The AP still allows data traffic between its wireless clients and wired devices on the network, across a WDS link, and with other wireless clients associated with a different VAP.

  • Can't 'see" other computers on my home network

I just added a third Mac to my home network. We already had a G4 running OSX.2 and an iBook running OSX.4. I've now added a G4 running OSX.4, but the new computer doesn't "see" the other computers in the network list.
On the first G4, if I browse the network (by pressing apple-K) I see the other two computers, the iBook and the new G4.
On the iBook, if I open a finder window and click the "Network" icon, I get the other two computers listed.
But on the new G4, if I open a finder window and select the Network icon, I get three folders, "Applications", "Library", and "Users". And these three folders are apparently empty.
I DO have internet connection, so the connection is okay. And if I press apple-K to get a server list, and type in the IP address of one of the other two computers, I can access them that way. But why don't they show up on the Network list? What do I have configured wrong? Obviously, I CAN use the "apple-k" connect-to-servers-by-typing-in-the-IP-address method, but it's not as "nice" as having them just show up in the network window.
I'm sure it's something simple that I missed, and I'll probably feel like an idiot when someone points it out, but fire away folks!

make sure you have your automounter running. Do this in a terminal to make sure:
    ps aux|grep -i automount
If it is not running, you may have turned it off using some utility (bad idea). It's controlled by the NFS startup item and should be enabled so the OSX API can listen for traffic on port 548, which is the Apple Fileshare Protocol port of register.
if this is confusing, I can give more detail when I arrive at my home.

  • Can't Connect to Other Computers on My Network

I am unable to connect to other computers on my network. When I go to Finder/GO/Network the next window which should display the servers on the network, opens momentarily and then closes. After that, nothing happens when I repeat the sequence. I am able to get out on the internet but am unable to connect to the other computers on the network, so I think my Linksys Wireless-G Cable Gateway is working. The computer is an intel Mac Pro running OS 10.4.11. My wife is able to connect to other computers on the network with her iMac running OS 10.3.9. Any suggestions for remedying this would be greatly appreciated.

Hopefully Apple will come to your aid
    • Make sure all the computers on your LAN are on AppleTalk w/ File Sharing: On
    • Check the Firewall settings of all workstations
    • Confirm that your User or Admin account has sufficient Privileges to access sharepoints
    • Reboot all machines to flush their DHCP lease or IP bottleneck
P.S. there are known issues currently with Leopard File Sharing to-and-from pre-Leopard OS X's. I do not know why your window magically closes itself. Last, run Software Update. Good luck.

  • Can't connect to anything on the network

Since yesterday, I'm unable to access any of the shared Macs and Servers on our network. I wasn't aware of making any changes that might have triggered this, like doing a software update.
    Here are the symptoms:
In the "Network" pane, when I click on any of the shares, I get the message:
"The alias "XXXX" could not be opened because the original file cannot be found."
Also the "My Network" folder is no longer showing up in the "Network" pane.
When I try to connect using Command-K to bring up the Connect to Server window, trying to connect to any of the favourite IP addresses produces no results: I can select the address and press "connect", but nothing happens.
I am able to print, and to send and receive e-mail and connect to the Internet, and the Network Status window in System Preferences says that Ethernet is active and all is well.
Other computers on the network can see and connect to me.
Any ideas? I've tried a restart (a few of them!)

Thanks for the suggestions... in the end the only solution was to reinstall the combo update of 10.4.11. Some preference (or something) was just very unhappy - and reinstalling the combo update fixed that.

  • Can't mount another computer on the network, or print, but can see all

When I attempt to connect to another computer on the ethernet network in the office, I can see lots of other computers on the network but I can't quite get there. This is only a recent problem that began a week or so ago and there were no problems earlier.
I can make it through Network >> Local >> Select the computer I wish to connect to >> Enter the password >> Select the volumes I wish to mount >> but then that's it, I get the spinning beach ball and nothing more happens. I don't understand how I can be seeing the volume and yet unable to mount it.
However, at the same time I can also see the printers on the network and am unable to print to them which indicates that there may be a related problem. No-one else on the network is having any issues connecting to other computers or printers.

I have the same problem - printers, volumes, computers - I have to relaunch the finder as soon as try to connect as a guest or registered user

  • WRT300N - Can't share other computers in Network

I have three computers connected to my network all using Windows XP O/S. When I try to access one of the other computers from the desktop home computer I receive a message that I do not have Administrative Priviledges. Cannot locate the other computers in My Network Places (same message) and cannot Ping other computers as well. If I look at My Network Places on the other two machines I can see the Linksys WRT300N router and can Ping 192.168.1.1. Windows Firewall is off. Security is Norton. Must have settings wrong somewhere but do not know where to start. I want to be able to share files and printers (sharing turned on in Windows) but at the end of my rope trying to figure this out. Can someone help?

Firs of all you need to disable Norton antivirus on all the computers. And make sure all the computers are in the same workgroup. Click Here and follow the Instruction how to enable file sharing between your computers.

  • IMac isn't loading a specific website (can't connect to that server), regardless of browser, though the same website will load on other computers on same network. Is it an issue with the iMac's settings?

Our iMac isn't loading a specific website (we get a message saying it can't connect to that specific server), regardless of browser (I've tried it in Chrome, Safari, and Firefox). However, the same website, which is for a major medical provider, loads without any issue on our other computers on the same wireless network. Is it an issue with the iMac's settings? All other websites seem to be loading without issue on the iMac.

... Is it an issue with the iMac's settings?
Possibly. Make sure you are not using a proxy server. Look in Safari Preferences > Advanced > Proxies > "Change Settings..." This will take you to the applicable Network Preferences. Make sure that nothing is selected in the "select a protocol to configure" list. It should look like this:
    Still not working?
Locate your Terminal app. It is in your Utilities folder. Open Terminal.
In Terminal, copy (triple-click) and paste the following line:
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item'
This will produce a list of all your account login items.
While you are in Terminal, copy (triple-click) and paste the following line:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'
This will produce a list of all non-Apple kernel extensions. There will be few, if any.
Post the results of the above.
