My husband and I share an apple id. How do we seperate them withou losing anything to use the Family Sharing?

Using iPhone 4S, iOS 8
When we first got our iphones we set up to share our iTunes account so we only had to buy an app once.  Now with Family Sharing we want to separate into our own apple IDs.  We plan to get new iPhone 6 s soon and want to back up what we can to the iCloud to make it easier.  What is the best way to do this without losing any info?  I want to keep my apple ID and create a new one for my husband.

Hi Christy,
Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
Family Sharing will make it easy for you to setup a new Apple ID for your husband, while allowing purchases to be shared between accounts. Take a look at the article below for information about the Family Sharing features and how to set it up.

To prevent this, the only thing you can do is to create another Apple ID for your wife or you, so you will have your information separated. Anothe roption is to allow your wife or you to use iCloud, and the other one should not use iCloud, so in this case the information won't get mixed
Nice Mende, I didn't even think of that.

  • HT204053 Can my husband and I share an apple ID if we have 2 separate iPhones? What would be the cons to this?

We have an iMac, an iPad that my husband and I share but 2 separate iPhones. Can we share our apple id so we share the same cloud?

You can, but for most people, the best solution is to share an ID for purchasing from the iTunes and App stores, but keep separate IDs for iCloud, iMessage and Facetime.
If you share the same ID for iCloud, you will be sharing the same iCloud account.  When you do this, any data you sync with the account is merged and appears on both phones.  You will, for example, end up with each other's contacts on your phone.  You will also be sharing the same 5GB of free storage space that comes with each account vs. each having your own 5GB of storage.  You can still share your iCloud calendars if you want (http://help.apple.com/icloud/#mm6b1a9479), and while you won't be sharing the same photo stream, you can still share photos with each other using shared photo streams (http://help.apple.com/icloud/#mmc0cd7e99).
If you use the same ID on both phones for iMessage and FaceTime, you'll end up getting each other's text messages and FaceTime calls.

  • HT204053 I have forgotten my questions and answers for my password. How can I replace them. I want to use the same password I have ?

I was on the phone for almost 2 hrs. yesterday because I had so many passwords I couldn't remember the one I used for itunes. The fellow helped me get it all straightened out but it still wouldn't let me get in because I couldn't remember the questions and answers. He was going to take care of it at that end and told me to wait 24 hours. So I'm at it again. I got into itunes but when I try to retrieve my previous apps,it wants me to put my password for that as well and then I'm in the situation with it not accepting my password so when I try to change my password it then wants me to answer the question and answer so now I'm thinking I have more than a seizure disorder and it's driving me to the point of no patience. Can you help?

You may have no need for additional but Apple does. They don't want your iTunes account to be hacked and then go complaining to them that their security procedures are not up to standards.

So how can I continue in the good old fashioned way?
Its really absurd to even ask this in light of the information that you have been given already. The "old fashioned" way is gone. It's Apple's store, Apples's rules and IMO - its a wise decision on Apple's part.
You do not have to comply at all, but you will not be able to purchase from iTunes anymore, but nobody is going to force you to do something that you do not want to do.

My husband and I have separate apple IDs , how do we use the same iTunes account

You don't. Each ID is associated with a separate account. Each of you should maintain a separate user account on your computer so as to maintain separate iTunes Libraries. Do not sync your phone with your husbands account or Apple ID and vice-versa or your data will become inter-mixed or worse - deleted from the phone.
Try to understand that iDevices are intended for use by one person with one Apple ID, one iTunes Library, and one iTunes account. They are not multi-user devices.

Sign out of the Apple ID on the device in question, making sure to disable the Find My iDevice feature.
Sign in with the new Apple ID.
If the intent is to sell the device, simply restore as new after disabling the Find My iDevice and signing out.

  • My husband and I share his apple ID on our iphone5s.  I created own Apple ID.  How can I put it on my phone for own iCloud and keep joint itunes?

My husband and I presently share his Apple ID on our respective 5c iPhones.  I want my own iCloud account.  I created an Apple ID for myself.
1} how do I change from his apple ID in my phone
    2) how do I continue to use the joint iTunes account under his name
    3) see below -  how do I switch the iTunes account to my apple ID
Also, under a totally different subject.  My husbands iPhone was just stolen while he was doing volunteer disaster work in the Philippines.  Since he did not have internet access I was not able to wipe out his phone on Find My iPhone until about 8 hours after it was stolen.  After he found a way to call me back in the states,  I wiped out all his data using FInd My iphone, notified Verizon and they suspended service.
Because the nonplan iPhones are so expensive ($600 +) I think he will buy an Android when he returns.  Is there any way to transfer what is on our iTunes account to his Android?
The Verizon service person told me that whoever stole it will not be able to use the phone as it has been reported stolen.  I can not imagine that is correct as there seems to be a thriving secondary market online. Is that correct?  I am concerned that some super technical person will be able to retrieve data that was purged via Find My iPhone....   Is there anything else I should do?

Did you take a look at the new feature Apple - iOS 8 - Family Sharing ?
Apple - iCloud - Family Sharing
Up to now, songs bought from iTunes could only be played by the Apple ID that has been used to buy them.
If you set up Family Sharing, your daughter can also play your songs and use the same contact info as before.
If you don't want to do that, sync the contact info to the address book on your computer, and sync the info back, using iTunes:
Sync your iPhone, iPad and iPod with iTunes using USB
If the iPad already has her Apple ID and contact info on it, restore the phone from the latest iPad backup.

  • HT204053 My husband and I share an apple ID.  How can I get a new ID for my husband's phone

How can I get a separate Apple ID for my husband phone.  He has a iphone4

When multiple devices sync with the same iCloud account any data you sync with the account such as contacts is merged, and the merged data will appear on all devices connected to the account.  To fix this you both need to have separate iCloud accounts (you can continue to share the same Apple ID for purchasing from the iTunes and app stores).  One of the phones can keep the current account; on the one that will be moving go to Settings>iCloud and turn all data that is syncing with iCloud (contacts, calendars, etc.) to Off.  When prompted choose to keep the data on the iPhone.  After everything is turned off, scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Account.  (This will only delete the account from this phone, not from iCloud.  The other phone will not be effected by this.)  Next, set up a new iCloud account on this phone using a different Apple ID and turn iCloud data syncing for contacts, etc. back to On.  When prompted, choose Merge.  This will upload the data to this new account.  At this point you will have two different iCloud accounts, one for each phone, with identical data on them.
You will then have to go to icloud.com on your computer and sign into each iCloud account separately and manually delete the unwanted data (such as deleting his contacts from your account, and vice versa).  These changes will be reflected on each phone.  When finished you will have individual iCloud accounts with just your own data on them.
Be sure to also use different Apple IDs for iMessage or you will start getting each other's text messages as well.  If you are using the same ID, go to Settings>Messages>Send & Receive and uncheck the email address shown under "You can be reached by iMessage at" on both of your phones.  This will prevent this from happening.

  • My husband and I share an Apple ID. Will all my apps as well as his appear on his new iPad when he activates his new iPad?

    Updating new iPad.

Yes, once he syncs it on the computer. This is not a good idea, however.
Using More than One iDevice on the Same Computer
This applies mainly to couples who are adding another device and do not want their email, messages, etc. being duplicated on both devices. To begin read: How to use multiple iPhone, iPad, or iPod devices with one computer. You need to establish a separate Apple ID and password for whomever will use the new iDevice. See Apple - My Apple ID and Frequently asked questions about Apple ID. The easiest way is to do this on the computer using iTunes: iTunes- How to set up an Apple ID within iTunes.
On the computer create a new user account for the person with the new iDevice. This will be the user account that person will always use. He/She will no longer use the other user account. This way that person will have a separate iTunes Library. Note that once done you cannot "share" apps under a single Apple ID. Each of you must purchase your own apps under your own Apple ID. When you decide to split up like this one of you will need to re-purchase the apps that they want to use.
Start by transferring the new device(s) to a new account along with all your data.  Save any photo stream photos that you want to keep to your camera roll (unless they are already in the camera roll) by opening your Photos app, tap on Albums icon at the bottom. Now, tap on My Photo Stream album; tap Select; tap on the photos you want to select;, tap the share icon (box with upward facing arrow) in the lower left corner; then tap Save to Camera Roll.
If you are syncing notes with iCloud that you want to keep then you need to open each of your notes and email them to yourself. Later you can copy and paste the text into new notes created in your new account.
Tap on Settings > iCloud > Delete Account (only deletes it from this device, not from iCloud; the person keeping the current account will not be affected,) provide the password to turn off Find My Phone and choose Keep on My iDevice when prompted.  Sign in with a different Apple ID to create your new account. Choose Merge to upload your data.
Once you are on separate accounts, you can each go to icloud.com and delete the other person's data from your account.
Note: The essence of the above was created by user, randers4. I
have made substantial changes to improve readability and syntax.

  • My Husband and I share my Apple ID.  I want to be separate.  How do I do this?

I had an Apple ID for my iPad.  Then my husband got an iPhone.  We were advised to use one Apple ID.  Now, we wish we had our own separate ID's.
How do we go about this?
I have the iPad 4 and he has iPhone 5.

See this doc for "all " about id

You will lose access to any purchases made on App store, iTunes etc as they will be linked to the old iD

  • I synced my phone to my IMac and all my photos transferred. How can I remove them from phone. I need the room on phone.

Hello, I would like to remove extra images from my phone that were synced from my IMac. What is the best way to move them off the phone and regain my memory space.

You remove photos that were placed on your computer via an iTunes sync by syncing again. When you sync again, after connecting the phone to iTunes, remove the checkmark in front of "Sync Photos From" on the Photos page of iTunes if you want to remove all previously synced photos or change the selection of folders/albums to be synced if you only want to remove some. Each time you sync, iTunes sets the non-Camera Roll photos on the phone to match the current iTunes settings. More info on iTunes photo sync: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4236
