My iPhoto won't load my thousands of photos! Will an upgrade help? Do I need to uninstall then reinstall iPhoto?

It just keeps "thinking". It won't load anything. I cannot back up my iphone photos because iphoto will never open.
What do I do? I have a backup of my iphoto library but I am not very technology savy.
I went to the genius bar and the guy was so rude I had to leave after the hour and a half of waiting and listening to him cut off my questions.
Please help!!! I love my photos and my music more than anything on this computer!

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a potential solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
what do you see when iPhoto launches?
what fixes have you tried?
where is your library located?
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
what type of Mac?
how much free space on your boot drive?
As a test launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and test to see if the same problem persists. Does it?

My iphoto will not load, all it does when i open it is just show a blank iphoto and won't load any of my photos that were already in there. Any way to fix it ?

Remember: we cannot see your machine. There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 8 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS.  So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Basic things like :
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For instance: 'iPhoto won't export' is best explained by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

  • Iphoto wont start and deleted all of my photos. can i uninstall and reinstall iPhoto?

can i uninstall and reinstall my iphoto and will it fix the problem that i have with not being able to import and look at photos?

Of course you can uninstall and reinstall iPhoto - but it Probably will not help at all
But that is only a wild guess since no one has any idea what you have or what your problem is
Lets start with really simple basics - what version of iPhoto do you have? what recently changed or happened that might be related to this? What exactly does "won't start" mean?  Why do you "think" iPhoto deleted all of your photos?
Do you have a good current backup? Note that iPhoto does not "delete" photos - users can but iPhoto does not
You sate numourour problems - please describe each and be concise without editorial comments
    1 - iPhoto won't start
2 - iPhoto delete all of your photos
3 - iPhoto will not import photos
4 - iPhoto will not let you look at photos

  • HT1751 I need to uninstall and reinstall iTunes (it won't let me update). So, how do I copy or back up my iTunes library of over 1,500 songs? Can I use a Flash Drive to do so?

I need to uninstall and reinstall iTunes (it won't let me update). I have IE 8 on Windows XP, and iTunes 10 something. In my Program files list I see iTunes and iTunes (2) and even iPod and iPod (2) where a tech had to back up and do this for me before. I'm just trying to fix it all. I keep getting the "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'iTunes.msi' in the box below." I can even run a search and find the folder, but it gives me the same error message. I was planning on using the Microsoft Fix-It tool  to help uninstall then Reinstall iTunes. But I need to backup my library. So, how do I copy or back up my iTunes library of over 1,500 songs? Can I copy the folder to desktop or can I use a Flash Drive to backup my music? I don't want to do anything until I know for sure how I can backup my songs, and then reinstall them into iTunes. Thanks for any help.

Ok, thanks that helps. I don't have an external hard drive though. What about backing up through 'the cloud'? I'm just wondering since my husband syncs his iPod to the PC through iTunes and he's worried that he will lose all the songs on his iPod if the library is lost from iTunes and he tries to 'sync' it up again. I'm not exactly sure how to  'copy the entire iTunes folder' either. I kinda suck at this unless I have step by step instructions, which I haven't found yet on iTunes help or other sources.
The only way I know how to back anything up is by going back to a restore point, etc. (as stated before, we don't have an external hard drive.)
    Thanks for the info.

What is your iPhoto version and how did you install it originally?
If it came with a new mac and Lion or Mt. Lion installed, you can delete iPhoto from the Applications folder (don't empty the Trash) and download it again from the "Purchased" tab of the App Store.
If you have bought the iLife CD, reinstall iPhoto from the installation media, after deleting it from the Application folder.
Or if your Mac came with an older MacOS X, but iLIfe preinstalled, use the system Install CDs,  see Terence Devlin's post here:  Re: My iPhoto isn't working. Error message says "you can't open the app "iPhoto" because it may be damaged or incomplete.

P.S: This may not only be a problem of a broken iPhoto. What did you do, directly before this happened? Did you run a program, that will clean the Mac to save space, like "Clean My Mac" or "Mac Keeper"? These little helpers can be risky and overdo it and remove too much. Then it might be safer to reinstall your system, because other essential files might be missing now.

Twas quite a hassle if I am honest which was eventually resolved but I don't feel qualified to help anyone through the process as it required a trip to my local apple store and a genius bar appointment.
Personally, I would do anything like moving pictures out of folders etc. Certainly not creating a new users. i don't think that is an elegant solution
Try the following which MAY just about rescue the situation for you but if they don't work you may have to do something more drastic.
    (1) Holding down Cmd & Alt at the same time, start iPhoto by clicking on the iPhoto icon. From the resulting menu choose Rebuild photo library by selecting all available options given to you and then pressing REBUILD!
    If that doesn't work
    (2) Fire up Utilities. Go to migration assistant. Chose 'From another Time machine back-up'. Open the 'Users' option that comes up next and from there select Pictures, then uncheck everything else like Applications etc (you don't want to do a full migration of everything) and click go.
If that doesn't work, take a deep breath and this step is rather complicated but it worked for me. First of all close iPhoto! Then go to new Finder window.
From the Finder window choose Pictures, then iPhoto library, press CMD and the letter i. It brings up a new window. Go to Sharing & permissions. From there select the padlock to unlock settings. and then select User account, then press the 'cog' icon next to +/- abd choose Apply to enclosed items.
This may take a while. Once completed, re-open iPhoto.
And that should (I stress should) cure it.
    Good luck.

  • Since my last software update, my iphoto 11 will not import any photos from any source. The circle just spins...when I go to force quit, it says iphoto not responding. Backed up iphoto library, uninstalled and reinstalled iphoto. Still not working. Help!

Since my last software update, my iphoto 11 will not import any photos from any source. The circle just spins...when I go to force quit, it says iphoto not responding. Backed up iphoto library, uninstalled and reinstalled iphoto. Still not working. Help!

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

I bought a used 2010 iMac, and don't want to wipe it clean because I would lose the paid apps my friend bought. How do I uninstall and reinstall iPhoto so I can update it with my iTunes acct? Is this possible? suggestions?

  • IPhoto won't fully load or open the photo window dispite upgrading to 5.0.4

IPhoto starts to Load but won't open the window, shows iPhoto in the menu bar but won't respond to the "about iPhoto" or open a "New Album" (option is grayed out) by choosing File_Close Window it ungrays the "New Album" option but when "New Album" is chosen nothing happens execpet that the "New Album" & Close Window" options are both grayed out. I upgraded to iPhoto 5.0.4 (not yet in the pull down choices of the "feed back" window) but that did not cure the problems and had no effect.
Will reinstalling 5.0 from the iLife DVD work and if so does the current version have to be uninstalled first, if yes how??
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks for you time .

    Hi Paul,
You can try a reinstall first.
    To reinstall iPhoto...
Navigate to /Applications and drag iPhoto to the trash
Navigate to /Library/Receipts and drag all iPhoto receipts to the trash
Navigate to ~/Library/Preferences and drag com.apple.iPhoto.plist to the trash.
Insert your iLife CD/DVD and choose to do a custom install. You will have to kee ongoing through the steps of the install before you get to the screen where you can choose a custom install.
    Install iPhoto.
Run Software Update and update iPhoto.
You can also try deleting the preference file for iPhoto.

Let me know if it works. If not we have more troubleshooting to do.

  • IPhoto won't load albums or import

When I open iPhoto it says loading pictures but they never load. It just continues. I've moved all the images to the desktop and tried importing them but it keeps giving me a message saying that is can't recognise some of the data even though the images were working for months.
Pictures won't import from my camera either and it never had a problem previously (it's a Concord 4060AF)

First here are two Apple KB documents that you should be aware of, particularly the second one:
    iPhoto Library Description
Don't tamper with files in the iPhoto Library folder from the Finder
How did you move those files to the desktop? Did you move the entire iPhoto library folder to the desktop, relaunch iPhoto and then drag that old library folder into the open iPhoto window? If that's what you did, you're getting all of the original files, edited files and thumbnail files imported as normal files and the files that you're getting the message about are non image files.
What you want to do is
1 - move any iPhoto library folder out of the pictures folder. If your original iPhoto Library folder is on the desktop then trash the one currently in the Pictures folder.
2 - launch iPhoto and create a new library.
3 - using the File->Add to Library menu option, select your original iPhoto Library folder and start the import process that way.
You should now get only the original files and the edited files, no thumbnail files. Also you may retain some roll organization. When you're satisfied that you have all your photos in the new library you can trash the old one.
For the record, did you do any moving of files within your original library folder before this happen or run any software updates just before?

  • Iphoto won't load/start up

Iphotos won't open. You click on the icon and it opens up to the main screen which is blank and the loading icon just constantly turns. The page never opens. Even when connecting a device like an Iphone the app does the same thing. Wanting to know how to fix issue, open iphots to retrieve all the photo's I have saved in application.

    What version of iPhoto?
Backup your iPhoto library, Depress the option and command keys, launch iPhoto and repair your database - if that does not do it then rebuild your database

There is no iPhoto box in System Preferences > iCloud.  There is a "Photos" box.
If that is the box you mean, then click the "Options" box to its right and make sure the options are set correctly.
