My MacBook Pro can no longer read/play/do anything with DVDs. I tried re-installing OS and Leopard but discs are rejected almost as soon as I put them in. For some reason my computer is rejecting any and all DVDs.
A few weeks ago I noticed my MacBook Pro was unable to open or read, etc... DVDs. This included DVDs with jpeg photos on them and DVD videos. I thought I might have deleted something necessary to DVD use. So I tried to re-install OS software. This included Snow Leopard and the original two Mac OS X discs. None would open or play or install. All were spit out of computer soon after I stuck them in.
So now what can I do? Thank you.
Do you recommend the canned air
It works just as well as the regular cleaning discs works. The only disadvantage is that you will need to keep purchasing canned air once it runs out. Cleaning discs last forever or until the tiny bristles on the disc wears out. Whichever comes first.
Any store that sells cds & dvds will also sell disc cleaners. Prices vary but they all do the same thing - clean your slot drive.

new iphone 5 and 4 year old macbook, and for some reason my computer says a later version of iTunes is required. So, i went to ITunes and found i have the latest version availble at this time. iTunes say phone can not be synced because it requires a version of 10.7 or greater?
iPhone 5 requires OS X 10.6.8 & iTunes 10.7 or greater. I suspect you're running Leopard, 10.5.8, correct? If so, you will first have to update your OS, then iTunes in order to sync your phone.

• iMovie ill behaving - Trash the iMovie pref file - use to set things right
• in reg. to Photos - Did You change iPhoto Photo Library - Then iMovie get's lost as it peeks into iPhoto on start up to see where photos are stored. Set iPhoto back to first Photo Library (when iMovie is not running) then start iMovie.

Imac and Macbook pro can no longer see one another
I'm not sure why, but all since I upgraded to Yosemite, I can no longer see my iMac on my Macbook Pro and vice versa. I could always see the computer that I needed to connect to in finder, or I could connect with my iCloud password. As of today, I can no longer access my iMac from my Macbook Pro and that's a problem. If someone could provide directions (dumbed down version) explaining how to connect the computers from scratch, I would greatly appreciate it. I am fine with setting it up again but I can't recall how I did it. Thanks so much. I did upgrade both my iMac and MacBook pro to Yosemite over the weekend.

Macbook Pro can no longer connect to any wirless connection
My macbook pro has never had any problem connecting to a wireless connection up until recently. For the last two months, I have not been able to connect to any wireless signal although I can when connected directly to the router with a lan cable. these are all networks that I have used in the past, with all correct passwords or even to networks that are not password locked. do you have any ideas on what i can do about this before making the trip to the apple store?
i forgot to mention, its not even a matter of getting connected to the wireless signal with a few bars showing and not function, it just does not connect at all anymore and i get an error message saying:
"there was an error joining the network [the name of the network i am trying to connect to]" -
also have all the up-to-date software on my macbook. any tips?
Which version of MacBook Pro (size & year - early 2011 13" for example)? This might help us point you in the correct direction.

One of my Macbook Pros can no longer print wirelessly to my HP 8100
Before I had AT&T U-Verse installed yesterday, I was using AT&T DSL. I had an Apple Time Capsule that I had attached my HP OfficeJet Pro 8100 to via USB. We have 2 Macbook Pros and they were able to print wirelessly to the 8100. When the technician finished with the U-Verse install he tried to connect my 8100 via an Ethernet cable to router (NGV510) since their router had no USB connection like my Apple Time Capsule. Nothing worked, couldn't figure out what to do. He put my Time Capsule as a bridge device to the AT&T router (I don't know what that means, but I have 2 networks now-- one is my original network name on Time Capsule and the new one is from the AT&T router). The Ethernet connection for the printer still didn't work. We connected the 8100 back to the Time Capsule via USB. One of the MacPros could print wirelessly, no problem. The other one couldn't.
I have been on the HP website, but am not a network tech., so I am having problems understanding what I need to do. Yesterday the AT&T guy told me to delete the printer, which I did, but I couldn't find a printer to re-add. Today I went through the HP site and tried the process of attaching the USB printer cable to my Macbook and re-booting. It found the driver and was added. I tried running the Set Wizard, but it evently said it couldn't find the printer. I tried it with USB printer cable attached to my Macbook and without. Neither way worked.
I am not sure what to do at this point. I did notice on the Macbook that can still print, there is [1BEEF5] behind the printer name, which does not appear on my Macbook printer name.
Any assistance would be appreciated, since AT&T says this is wireless connection problem and it is not their problem. They will try to fix it if I want to pay more money them for wireless support. What a scam!! You have a network that works and then they install their new product and break my connections and what me to pay more money to them to fix it. NOT GOING TO HAPPEN !! I read your post about how you are having some difficulties connecting your Officejet 8100 to your Macs, over the network and USB, as neither seem to be working.
I will do my best to help and make good suggestions to you to see if we can get through this for you.
First, I would suggest this certain troubleshooting guide for the printer not being found:

Another possibility, would be the actual router settings, as this was the device that had been changed. Check your router settings, here is what you are looking for:
Network name and password to have no spaces or punctuation.
If using WPA2 security, switch to WPA personal.
Dual broadcast Wireless b/g/n (printer may only connect to g).
Mac filter needs to be turned off.
Firewall settings need to be at there default settings, or set to a lower security.
Multicasting "on".
Following ports need to be un-blocked:
Incoming (UDP) ports : 137, 138, 161, 427
Outgoing (TCP) ports : 137, 139, 427, 9100, 9220, 9500
If all of the router settings are correct and you still cannot install the printer on your Macs, respond to me with which Mac OS X you're running on the Macs and we can go from there.

We have a consultant who uses a macbook pro to access the internet and a windows share within our network. He has been accessing the internet and the windows share fine for over 4 weeks and overnight he can no longer access the internet or this windows share. I have got the error down to a specific windows share which is actually a share on a DC hence the loss of internet. When this user plugs in via ethernet he can view all network locations as expected and can access everyone succesfully bar this specific one. Everytime he tries to access this share he gets the following error: 'This file server is available on your computer. Access the volumes and files locally'. I have another macbook pro that can successfully access this share.
I have tried renewing leases, browsing the network in finder, using 'cmd + k' all produce the same message.
The user is running Mountain Lion
Any ideas?
AdamFind and delete the ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.sidebarlists.plist file. This is what keeps track of all your current server share mounts. Maybe the file is corrupt or something. Once you delete it, reboot the machine and then try again. Don't empty the trash until you're sure everything works after the reboot.

MacBook Pro can no longer see the hard drive
I've got a MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo, 15-inch.
Okay, so I was chasing the nazis out of North Africa in Call of Duty 2 when the game froze. Command-Option-Escape was unresponsive, so I held down the power button to shut the whole thing down. When I brought it back up, I got the flashing folder icon.
After yelling a few words I shan't repeat here, I booted off the installation DVD, then started up Disk Utility to try to repair the disk. However, Disk Utility only sees the DVD; it doesn't see the hard drive at all. Neither does Startup Disk or System Profiler. (The hard drive would be under the ATA section in System Profiler's menu, right? It only shows the DVD drive.) If I try to go ahead with the OS X installation, at the "Select a Destination" screen, where the list of disks should be is disturbingly blank. So according to every method I've tried so far, it's as if my hard drive has been entirely disconnected.
This was my Christmas present, and I was hoping to get at least two years out of it, not two weeks. Anyone have any idea how to get this beautiful machine back on its feet again? I'm familiar with Unix and not afraid of using the command line, but I'm not sure what to try there.

I have a macbook pro and do a lot of online shopping. There is one site I like to shop on that suddenly I cannot get the items to appear, I get the description and the rest of the page but no photos. Anyone know why? No other sites have this issue.
If you are using Safari to shop online...
First, empty the cache. With Safari open, press Command + Option + E
Then quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that didn't help, from the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferrences then select the Privacy tab.
Click: Remove All Website Data
Quit and relaunch Safari. Try again.
If that didn't help, open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari. -
Mid-2010 MacBook Pro taking a long time to boot up with Yosemite (Etrecheck results)
I'd be so grateful if anyone can help me get to the bottom of this. The MacBook's otherwise working just fine just takes quite a lot longer (2-3 mins) to boot up since installing Yosemite. Just tried upgrading the memory which has made the system run faster but doesn't seem to have remedied the boot up problem.

MacBook Pro can't actually connect to Wi-Fi with Self-Assigned IP
Hi there
I have a 15 inch MacBook Pro and it can connect to Wi-Fi but have no actual data coming in. And it says self-assigned IP.
This only happens to my home Wi-Fi, however, I can connect and use Wi-fi at school or anywhere else perfectly. In the mean time, my Android phone and my flatmates' Windows have no problem using the Wi-Fi. The problem has been going on and off for a month, sometimes it works again and sometimes it goes wrong like this again.
During this time I mostly use my other MacBook Pro 13 inch Retina. Until today, this problem happens on my 13 Retina mac for the first time, and the 15 Pro again as well. A few days ago, my 15 Pro started working again, and today they just gone wrong together at the same time.
I just found out that my 15 pro can still work if connected to ethernet, but I can't just work in the living room, where the router is. And as you know Retina doesn't support Ethernet.
I've check on the Internet and found many people have the same problem as I do. I also tried lots of ways to fix it with the information I found online. And nothing works. I even suspect that it's actually my flatmate blocks me out with some setting on the router (Is it possible?)
Anyways, can someone please help me fix it thoroughly... Please and thanks.Each country regulates wireless networking differently. Wi-Fi devices are restricted to certain frequencies and power levels. The client devices try to find out where they are and configure themselves accordingly. Since a wireless access point (WAP) usually does not move across national boundaries, the Wi-Fi regulatory domain (country code) is set by querying the first one to respond when the client initializes itself. You don't have any direct control over it on the client. If your device is picking up the wrong country code, and is therefore locked out of using some Wi-Fi channels or operating at full power, the only lasting solution is to fix or remove the misconfigured WAP.
To find out which WAP's are broadcasting a wrong country code, do as follows.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V.
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. The first line should look like this:

Each line below that one represents a WAP within range. Compare the two-letter code in the column headed "CC" with the ISO code for your country. The code "X0" means that the country couldn't be determined. If a WAP with a wrong code is not under your control, try restarting the computer as close as possible to your own router.
