My mum needs files off her USB flash drive. My mum needs you!!!

Hi all.
Got an urgent call off my darling mother this morning. She has/had all her important work files stored on a single USB stick (yes, I know..)
The disk has died, and I'm asking if any of you wonderful people have any ideas on how I might be able to retrieve any/all data off it.
The disk is found in lsusb as:
Bus 005 Device 003: ID 058f:1234 Alcor Micro Corp. Flash Drive
is listed as /dev/sdb however "dd if=/dev/sdb of=mumscrappystick.img" gives us:
dd: failed to open ‘/dev/sdb’: No medium found
Any bright ideas much appreciated, Windows or Linux tools, beers given to the winning idea!! Urgent response required.
(Have also tried testdisk which doesn't find said drive)

Thanks ewaller and shulamy. I'm pretty careful with dd and touch wood haven't done anything silly with it 'yet', I did however manage to rm my entire /etc/ directory after a few beers round at a friends house recently (don't ask)!
Have had a lot of luck with testdisk in the past. Was going to make an image of it and run testdisk on that, but as I couldn't get an image of it via dd this wasn't possible. Also testdisk did not detect the stick on startup.
There's a windows utility called 'urescue' which has had success on some usb sticks for some people.
A page I found which discusses reflashing the controller chip on the USB stick is: http://www.rmprepusb.com/tutorials/repa … lash-drive
The above link uses many manufacturer utilities, which only run on Windows XP, so sorry if this offends people. Sometimes you need to dance with the devil for this kind of thing A small Windows XP partition can sometimes be a bit of a lifesaver...

Hi. I transferred an iMovie file to a USB flash drive. How can i retrieve the file back to iMovie? I am unable to do it

    Hello there,
It sounds like you have a video file you exported from iMovie that you would like to import back into the program. Depending on the version of iMovie the process is a bit different so choose the correct article for your version:
iMovie '11: Import video from movie files

  • How do you save videos from iPhoto to a USB flash drive?, How do you save videos from iPhoto to a USB flash drive?

Hello! Could someone please help me? I am trying to save vidoes from iPhoto to a USB flash drive. After I export them, I open my flash drive to play them back and they are all zero seconds long in Quick Time Player. What am I doing wrong?

    How are you exporting?
Try to export using the "File" menu and select "Kind > Original".
Then drag the exported video file to your USB flash drive.

  • How do I browse & play .mp3 files from a USB flash drive using Labview 8.0?

I'm a tester & want to test USB flash drives connected to PC.
I want to browse the file system & playback the audio files, .jpeg files etc in the USB drive. I've Labview 8.0. When I searched for some examples or VIs which can detect the USB flash drive, couldn't find any. So if you could point me in the right direction, I can find a solution to my problem.
    Thanks.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

You probably won't find specific examples for this.  A USB flash drive is mounted by the OS and appears as a new memory storage device to all software on the PC, including LabVIEW.  You can certainly write a LabVIEW program to open files on the stick and play/run them but I would create a VI that wrote files to the stick and then read them back and checked them for bit-level errors.  Keep in mind that your OS might be doing parity checking under the hood which would make your test rather meaningless.
BTW, testing memory by looking at pics or listening to MP3s would be useless of course.  A human can't see or hear bit-level errors in a high bandwidth data stream.
    Using LabVIEW: 7.1.1, 8.5.1 & 2013

  • Hi how do i save files to a usb flash drive in windows 8 rt

Hi how do i save a pdf file to a usb drive i have a tablet with windows 8 RT myfiles are in Adobe

Adobe Reader Touch does not support Save or Save As yet.  But we are working on adding the support in a future release.
How did you get PDF files "in Adobe"?
If you already have the PDF files on your device, you can simply use Microsoft File Explorer on the Windows 8 desktop to copy them to your USB flash drive.
If you tap/click on the link to a PDF file in Microsoft Internet Explorer (Windows Store app, i.e. Metro version), IE will prompt you to "Open" or "Save".  After you choose the Save option, you can specify your USB flash drive as destination.

  • How To Transfer music files from a usb flash drive onto my thrive

I have some music taken from my pc onto a usb flash drive.  I can play it on the thrive but want to permanently transfer it onto the thrive so I can play it without using the usb  flash drive.
    Cananyone help me?
    Thanks

One way that I did it was to download a movie onto my laptop. Once I did that, I copied it onto an SD card. Inserted the card into my Thrive and dowloaded it from there. Or as others have mentioned, keep the movie on the SD card so that you'll have more memory on your Thrive. I went on YouTube to see how to copy from the SD to the Thrive. It's pretty easy.

  • Installed itunes - usb flash drive no longer recognized

    hi,
I installed itunes, loaded up the ipod with music, and now my computer will no longer read the files off my usb flash drive. the computer sees the "mass storage device" when I plug my drive in, but the volume/files are not coming up.
    any suggestions?
    thank you!

Are you sure the files are still on your Flash drive.? Can you locate them in a folder on you flash drive just by going to the iTunes\iTunes Music folder and viewing the array of folders? If they are there, go back to the iTunes icon on the desktop, bring up the list of tunes, highlight them all, delete them, and go back to the Flash drive, highlight all the folders, drag them over to your blank iTunes screen and drop them. You won't get any indication anything is happening right away but they are reloading. For some reason iTunes cannot update itself with the correct pathways.
    Hope this helps, Dave.

  • Satellite L675-11H - Can't access and/or read files on USB flash drive

    Hi all,
I recently bought a Toshiba Satellite L675-11H and was trying to transfer files from a USB flash drive on my Toshiba hard disk. The files have been previously transferred from my old laptop (HP - XP) to my USB flash drive.
My new laptop can't access the USB flash drive at none of the USB ports I connect the flash drive to. What might be the problem here? Thank you for your help or any helpful advice!

    Hi Rush,
Can you post more detailes about this behavior? What happens if you connect the HDD to your notebook, do you see that Windows installs drivers for new USB device or do you get an error message? If you have connected the USB drive check the disk management of Windows if its recognized there (Control panel > system and security > Administrative tools).
Have you already tested other USB devices such as USB mouse? If they dont work too the problem could be related to USB ports. In this case you should remove all USB ports from device manager and restart your notebook. Also update the chipset driver could help.

  • Can I copy HP Recovery Media to another USB flash drive?

Hi. Just a couple questions please: 1. When I make the one time only "HP Recovery Media" to a USB pen drive, can I then "copy" and "paste" to another USB flash drive as long as the 2nd flash drive has enough capacity? The Recovery will still work right?I ask this in case I need to change to another USB flash drive and I am aware that I can only have one copy of the HP Recovery. 2. If that is the case, I then can also make a backup to an external Western Digital drive so that in case of malfunction of the USB flash drive I can always transfer the files to another USB flash drive? Thanks in advance for the reply. Best regards.

Hi, Copy and paste won't work. Please try the following method:    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Operating-Systems-and-Software/This-is-how-to-make-a-2nd-set-of-recovery-disks/td-p/1694703 Regards.

  • Deleting hidden .trashes files on FAT32 USB thumb drive

    Hi all.
I have a few thumb drives (1gb / 4gb) that I need to be able to use on both PC and Mac. They work fine for accessing files etc., but I find that if I delete files on OSX to make more room, the space isn't made available. I've discovered that this is due to invisible .trashes files, which I can only see and delete by using a Windows machine. This is a right pain as that means I have to remember to clear space on drives at work before trying to copy files onto drives at home. Is there any way to ensure that when I delete files in OSX that all the associated bits are cleared as well?
Cheers in advance for someones help !
    Pete

Hi Tkmoore, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Is there any other way to delete these hidden files off of a flash drive besides emptying the trash.
Well, you could reformat it to wipe it clean.
if the flash drive is removed, can you just plug it back in and then empty the trash?
At least on the Mac side you can, I presume the PC side also works that way.

  • USB Flash Drive & power using Hub

Interesting fact -- my iMac can accept my USB Flash Drive on the convenient keyboard hub without any problem. However, when I reboot using Boot Camp into Windows XP Pro -- It cannot! It says insufficient power & I must use one of the USB ports on the (less convenient) rear of the iMac. This isn’t a major issue for me since I mostly am using OS X & rarely use Windows & even less often need to use a USB Flash drive from Windows. However, I do need to unplug something else (the Apple Modem) on those rare occasions when I wish to plug in a USB Flash Drive  while in Windows. BTW, I use SanDIsk Micro Cruzer with the U3 software --which doesn’t work with OS X -- deleted.
I would think the power requirements would be exactly the same -- being as the hardware (computer & flash drive) is identical whether I’m running OS X or XP Pro.
    Strange.

After a few "upgrades" to NM, the option ONLY appears after I turn my security off.  If I leave my WEP security ON, the only option that appears is to "copy" the 32-digit password & enter it on the laptop.  However, I keep getting errors.
Is there a procedure to use a USB flash drive to connect a "new" laptop to my secured wireless network?
    Thank you.
    Hi thomas,
If this is your own New Laptop to your Network, and even after you supplied the password, the problem is the Network Lock is still on. You need to disable the Network Lock. Enter the password, installed Network Magic if the Laptop is your own. You need to stop tracking your Laptop as an intruder on your other copies of Network Magic.
Then you need to reenable the Network Lock from your Wired Computer. Use your other computer to activated the copy of Network Magic installed on the laptop.

  • How do I backup to a USB flash drive?

How do I backup to a USB flash drive?

Do it with Windows, not with iTunes. Copy your whole iTunes folder from the hard drive to the USB flash drive. Or, if you have music not in the iTunes folder, then copy the whole My Music folder.
Before you start, make sure the flash drive has capacity. Most iTunes libraries are bigger than most flash drives. If you need more room, consider an external hard drive, which have much more capacity than a flash drive.

  • How to reformat a USB flash drive?

I have 1.33 GB available on my Buffalo USB 2.0 GB Flash Drive that is formatted as MS-DOS File System (FAT 16).
Suddenly, every time I try to copy a MS Word document from my iMac to the flash drive I get the following message.
+"The item cannot be copied because there is not enough free space."+
I reported this to the Buffalo customer service and they responded with,
+"When you look at the files in the USB flash drive, do you see a lot of temporary files? Please delete these. If there is no other solution, I would like you to copy your good files onto your computer hard drive, reformat the USB drive, and copy the good files back onto the USB drive. "+
I did not see any temporary files, so I'm thinking that I have to reformat the flash drive.
But how do I do this?
I've backed up the files on the flash drive to my iMac.
I insert the flash drive and click on Disk Utility.
I select the flash drive icon and...
    What do I do now?
The choices at the top are First Aid, Erase, RAID, Restore.
BTW, I am running on a iMac 2GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM, OS 10.4.10.
As is evident, I have no idea about computers.
Please advise on a step-by-step basis.
I thank you in advance for your assistance.
