My OS X drive Icon is gone again!!

Ok this is weird, it disappeared last week. The drive is there and is accessable by hitting Apple-N-then I see my user name and can Apple/arrow up to get to the top level but it's icon doesn't show up in the list)I tried everything with prefs(show hd on desktop etc), techtool, permissions, spoke to tech support. I finally gave up and did a complete reformat and install. -it was time, now 3 days after re-install it's gone again. I tried unplugging all of my fw drives and usb stuff too. also if I make a new user it doesn't fix the problem.
who know's how to fix this in terminal?
bummer.

Could be that your drive is becoming invisible. Why it is doing so no one knows. Try this:
Launch ScriptEditor and paste this into the script window:
tell application "System Events"
set visible of disk "NameofDisk" to true
end tell
tell application "Finder" to quit
delay 1
tell application "Finder" to launch
Replace NameofDisk with the actual name of your disk, hit the Compile icon to make sure the script didn't acquire any errors, and then hit run. This should set the visible attribute back to visible and quit and relaunch the Finder, all in one fell swoop. If the drive reappears then it is indeed going invisible. If it doesn't you have some other problem.

my external hard drive icon is gone?

    Ferd II,
I'm having the same problem as Michael in Canada.  I'm using a LaCie 320GB hard drive to backup my MacBook Pro via Firewire cable about once a week.  Today when I plugged in the hard drive, no icon appeared.  Disk Utility shows the external drive and Verify and Repair confirm it's OK.  I checked System Preferences and Finder Preferences and the icon should appear.  I've done a Restart and Shutdown, with the external drive unplugged and plugged in, with no success.  I've looked at the possibility of resetting SMC and PRAM (from another similar post) but after reading those suggestions, I'm not seeing the symptoms that should correct.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

i updated my apple tv 3rd gen to 5.1 just...after updating my trailers and photostream icons were gone. Had to facotry reset, then sign in again...after a while icons were gone again...

First I would charge it for an hour and then:
    - Have you tried resetting the iPod:
Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears
    - Next would be to place the ipod n recovery mode and then try to restore it via iTunes. For recovery mode see:

  • Macintosh HD icon is gone AGAIN

i have the same problem the second time, it was solved before but this time, it's weekend and i cannot get the help from the service center till monday.
do you think it's okay to still use the computer for another day? all the files are there, no problem working except the icon is gone from the desktop.
    thank you.

Sounds like your drive got the invisible bit set. They probably had you reset it in Terminal. There is a peculiar Leopard variation of the problem where adding a Spotlight Comment in GetInfo to a drive or partition will cause it go invisible. For this problem you need to both remove the comment, remove the metadata entry for the comment, and reset the the visible bit. See my article for more information:
    http://www.pinkmutant.com/articles/invisible.html
And, aside from the annoyance factor, it doesn't hurt a thing for the drive to have the invisible bit set. The article tells you how to make an alias to the drive which you can use to open the drive, if the other things sound too technical to do yourself.

  • My hard drive icon is gone from desk top and does not show up in spotlight or finder searches!

    Hi there
recently my hard drive icon has disappeared from my Macbook Pro (10.7.4) desk top and does not show up in spotlight or finder searches! I have tried several fixes posted online for earlier operating systems with no luck.
Also, when I connect my external hard drive the icon does not appear on the desl top nor in the finder either, making looking for documents impossible.
    Help!!!
    Thanks in advance!
    Marni

In "finder" click "finder" then "preferences" and navigate to the "general" tab.
Select which items you would like to have show on your desktop.

  • My hard drive icon has gone from finder. how do i check available space?

I normally check my available hard drive space by clicking on the icon hardrive in finder window.  However in Lion its not there. where is it?   How do i check available space?

Go to Finder Preferences (in the Finder menu) > General tab, make sure the item "Hard Disks" is checkmarked. Once it is, your hard drive's icon should appear on the desktop in the rightmost column.
You can also maintain a quickly viewable summary. In Finder, go to the View menu and select Show Status Bar. That will add a narrow area at the bottom of each Finder window. In that area will be shown the amount of free space remaining on the drive, as well as the number of items in that folder.

        Hi Betsnikel,
Updates are supposed to improve the device! Sorry that this did not occur. What device do you have? Are you using the default message keyboard? Have you tried powering the device off/on?

  • Startup drive icon disappeared, MacOS X 10.4.3

I have lost the internal hard drive icon on my PowerBook G4 1.5Mhz 15" with MacOS 10.4.3, 1.125 GB RAM. The disk suddenly went off the desktop and also the sidebar together with a few other problems at the time, leading to a Finder crash and restart. I had been working in Photoshop CS and Acrobat Professional 6.
Now the drive shows up in Spotlight, and I access the main level of the drive if I open it from there. It also shows up in Disk Utility, and running disk verify shows no error. Same with Applejack and Yasu. I have tried Disk Utility from the disk and also from Tiger install CD. The disk functions normally in all other respects, except it refuses to mount an image to the desktop or to the sidebar. Changing Finder preferences does not help. Other disks mount, through FireWire and USB (iPod shuffle), and the Finder preferences for having them show up or hide also works.
When I get the drive to show through Spotlight, so that I have a Finder window with the icon showing, the icon is grey. I have tried dragging it back into the sidebar, but it just pops right out again, without showing -- a little nudge in the bar, that’s all.
I have also made it appear by doing a show hidden files command. That brings it to show on the desktop, but then it disappears again when I turn that function off. So it looks like the main drive mysteriously has been set to be hidden from view.
I use FileVault, but can’t think of any connection. The drive also does not show up under other accounts on the same machine.
There is one other symtom which disturbs me. It seems the drive has filled up 2-3 GB more since before this happened. I had it steady around 21 GB free, and now it is down towards 18, with no reason in terms of intended new files. It this is some kind of cache or swap files, they have not been cleaned by Applejack Deep Clean procedure, which is one of the procedures I have run.
...And, I have tried the com.apple.finder.plist delete trick. No effect, except having to restore the other little things that were lost. Doesn’t make sense that it would work in my case, as reported in other cases, because the drive icon is gone in all login spaces on the machine, not just the one I was using when it happened.
I have also checked that the name has not inadvertently been changed to have a dot in front, to make it invisible.
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   PowerBook G4 15", 1.5Ghz, 1.125GB RAM, 80 GB internal drive

There have been several cases over the last few months of drives changing their attribute to invisible. See this thread. If you have Developer Tools installed you can check the status with the GetFileInfo command, which would look like this:
    Tiger:~ francine$ GetFileInfo /
    directory: "/"
    attributes: avbstClinmed
    created: 05/03/2005 16:54:33
    modified: 12/27/2005 09:47:29
If the second letter is a capital V rather than the lower case v, then the drive is invisible. As mentioned in the above thread, you can use the SetFile command or FileBuddy to fix it.

  • Hard Drive icon gone to lines on Desktop

In the last hour my Macintosh Hard Drive icon on the desktop has gone to a series of lines under the picture of the HD. I've restarted a few times just to see if it was a small glitch but its still the same. Does anyone know how to bring the wrods "macintosh hard drive" back to life ? I've only had this a few days and already getting problems.
    Paul.

You can go clean all of them, including font cache. Restart your computer about 3 or 4 times after it. The first reboot will take awhile, as the cache files are being rebuilt.

    Try a reset or restart.
If the app is still missing, download again via iTunes or connect to the computer and sync it back from iTunes on the computer.
Frankly, in the time it took to sign up and post here the app could have already been re synced from iTunes on the computer.

  • No hard drive icon on brand new iMac?

    Hi,
I just received, installed and set up a Refurbished 24 in Intel iMac, 3.06 GHz.
All is fine, except that the hard drive icon (by default named "Macintosh HD) does not show up at all on my desktop. The desktop is totally empty, no icon at all. All apllications are there, system is there... the computer works fine.
I tried: dik utility verification and repair (where it does show) - logging in and off - restarting the computer, etc., to no avail. NO hard drive icon showing.
I can access the drive content via the Go menu, but this is not normal, and it is awkward and inconvenient.
    Any solution?
    Thanks,

    Hi Joe,
Thanks! I had already figured that out from the forum, but after posting, and after erasing and reinstalling the whole Snow Leopard!!!! Waste of time and stupid overlook on my side, specially since I had just gone through all system preferences setup and forgot the Finder one.
Well, at least I could partition my hard drive as I wanted...

  • TM Drive Icon was yellow - is now blue - ?

Hi, I just wanted to begin using my old drive for my new Mac.
Yesterday I deleted the one file from the drive (old TM backup)
by moving it to the trash. The following "Empty trash" lasted very long...
Then a long backup followed. About 12 hours for 240GB - is this normal?
I noticed that the drive icon which always was yellow
was now displayed in blue! What did this mean?
Today I opened the drive and the color of the icon is yellow again.
    Can anyone please explain this?
    Thanks!

    Thanks, Barry!
    Open system preferences/time machine.
The icon should be the Time Machine icon in blue.
    Then I see this:
What you posted is the generic firewire icon....
I meant the icon that was displayed on the desktop when the drive
was switched on (mounted). In the past (on my old Mac) it was always yellow,
now (yesterday it was blue during the 12 hours backup) - today yellow again.
I guess this has some meaning. But which?
You might want to download the Time Machine Buddy widget
to see if Time Machine is making backups.

  • External drive icon not appearing on desktop

Hi - I have also posted this in the Time Machine forum as this is where my problem started. New iMac yesterday - replacement for faulty iMac which I had backed up using Time Machine. Reinstall from Time Machine effortless - no problem. Downloaded available software updates and 10.5.7 onto new iMac. No problem until I go to do another backup. Time Machine does not recognise external drive and I get "volume could not be found" message. At this point in time the external drive icon is showing on the desktop. Give up and go to bed thinking I will reformat external drive in the morning and start again
This morning, I boot up the machine but the external drive icon has disappeared from the desktop. Unplug external HD from usb and plug in again. No icon on desktop although it shows in Finder and Time Machine.
Anyway - I turned Time Machine off and then pointed it at the Ext. HD - went to back up now and magic - did complete backup and has done a second subsequently. Seems to have created a second backup folder separate from the one created by previous machine from which I reinstalled. Still no desktop icon! Switch iMac off and on again - still no desktop icon. So why - the Ext. drive is recognised and works so why isn't an icon for it appearing on the desktop?
Please help - I need answers to these weird happenings
    Thanks
    Ann
    .

Problem solved and it was so simple - just had to go to Finder, Preferences, General and tick the box that says external devices. Desktop icon has returned:-) Don't know why it became unticked but everything now is working absolutely fine (as far as I know lol) Hope this is the start of a good relationship between me and my new Mac!

  • External Mounted Hard Drive Icon Not Showing on Desktop nor on Sidebar

    Bonjour,
I have a portable drive that does NOT show up in the Sidebar nor on the Desktop. The only way I can see and navigate through it is by clicking in Disk Utility > Mount Point: <hyper-link>
Then hard drive icon and its content show up fine. But the HD icon is slightly dimmed (it is paler than the all other - HD, computer, etc - icons).
I verified the external HD and it is just fine. I have another eDrive (TechTool Pro 4) partition and it shows up like any normal HDs normally does.
How can I get the icon to show up back into the Sidebar and the Desktop?
Is there a "Preference" file I need to throw out?
Is there a UNIX command I could execute to make it show up again?
    Thanks for your assistance.

Open the Script Editor in the /Applications/AppleScript/ folder and run the following:
    tell application "System Events"
set visible of (choose folder with invisibles) to false
    end tell
When prompted, select your hard disk in the dialog box. Next, log out and back in.
