My spell check can't spell worth a darn

I've had it. My spell checking in mail doesn't work. It can't spell anything even though it is setup to spell correct while i type. I've also clicked on doing spell check manually too, and it does a lousy job. If I can't get decent spell checking here, I'll be forced to use Outlook 2007 again. I really don't want to go there, but non-correcting spell check is not acceptable.

Well dang I need to clarify the definition of darn. Here's an official documentation on my use of the word darn:
darn 2 (därn)
interj.
Used to express dissatisfaction or annoyance.
adv. & adj.
You are correct in that grammar is just as important as spell checking. I should have used a more perfect word that would have less room for interpretation like - crap.
Now can i import or download a better spell checker for the mail program?
Or do i need to go back to using Outlook 2007? Even this spell checker doesn't correct the lower case i. This is pretty sad since Outlook has had a great spell and grammar checker for years. Apple really has no excuse for poor performance on spelling and grammar. The iPage program does a better job. So why can't Apple link that program's spelling and grammar checking tool?

Leopard- In Mail, I'm getting a window telling me the spell checker can't be found, and stopping me from answering emails or typing anything. The spell checker seeems to work in Notebook.
    Any suggestions??
Looking forward to your bailing me out.

Yes, if you know where it is now. Aperture cannot help you find them, only where it last saw them, but if you tell it where they are, it can reconnect them.

  • Why doesn't Thunderbird underline misspelled words so that the spell checker can suggest alternatives?

I can't activate spell checker because there are no misspelled words underlined, when I know that there are.

To enable underlining of incorrectly spelt words as you type:
'Tools' > 'Options' > 'Composition' > 'Spelling' tab
    or
'Menu icon' > 'Options' > 'Options' > 'Composition' > 'Spelling' tab
select : 'Enable spell check as you type'
    click on OK
However, you do not have to have this enabled in order to use Spellcheck.
Click on 'Spelling' in the toolbar, it will open a small window offering potential spelling corrections for mispelt words.

  • Spell Check error

I have been having a problem with e-mail -- that has since migrated to Safari as well. When sending a message or trying to enter a password and using a special character or carriage return I get an "Alert" that the "Spell Checker" can't be found (approx.) and the system essentially locks up.
A search of the discussion groups attributed this to "Spell Catcher" and had a number of solutions that involved reinstalling the system.
I used Spring Cleaning 10.0 to uninstall Spell Catcher and all linked files (extensions, etc.) and the problem appears to have been resolved.
This is a much simpler solution.
I am entering this here because the original discussion has been closed and no further posts were allowed over there.

I am posting this as a service to others who may run into the same problem.

  • Spell check in Mail Leopard

I accidently got some miss spelled words learned into Spell check in Mail app. On Leopard.
What can I do to correct this problem. Is there away to reset the spell checker so that miss spelled words I learned into spell checker can be eliminated?

See this article http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh1650.html which among other things says "If you accidentally add a misspelled word to the dictionary, type the misspelling in the Spelling dialog, then click Forget."
What I found is if you highlighted the misspelled word control/right click on it and choose "Unlearn Spelling" from the menu.
You prompted me to look for a user dictionary that I can edit. I Have not yet found it.

  • Spell Checker vi?

I would like to be able to spell check a string from within labview.
Has anyone successfully integrated a commercial spell checker (like the
one MS Office uses) or created one in labview?
    thanks for any input.
    muren

This has been done. There is a LabVIEW 6.1 example.
Spell Check a VI or Library
Description: Spell Checker checks the spelling of VIs and libraries. Items checked include the following: names of control, indicators, free labels on the front panel and block diagrams, and VI descriptions. When the program runs, the user is prompted to choose a VI in memory or from a file. The user is then prompted make spelling changes that are automatically inserted back into the VI.
Spell Checker works by manipulating the text of the exported string of a VI, parsing off tags within the text, and sending the text to MS Word via activeX. MS Word does all of the spell checking using built in features. When the spell checking is done, the information is then inserted
    into the VI.
This program was tested using MS Word 2000 (9.0.3821). If the activeX reference is broken on your computer, open up MS Word check spelling.vi, right click on the reference and slide your mouse to select activeX class >> browse. Look for Microsoft Word application on the list. Note: this program may need modifying after the new reference is created.
Spell Checker can be modified to incorporated into the LabVIEW programming environment. First change the VI properties to run when open and closed if originally closed. Then copy the library into the folder ...\labview X.X\project. Restart LabVIEW, and Spell Checker will be found under the tools menu.

  • Disable "Add to dictionary" in Spell Checker

In my application, there is a textarea with spell checker. When spell checker finds a new word, it has an option to add the new word to dictionary. Is there a way to allow the users to do spellcheck but not allow them to add new words to dictionary?

    Hi,
Here below I am combining Vishal's solution with another solution that I found while trying to apply Vishal's solution which didn't work for me however gave me the correct direction to follow. For the benefit of others, I have merged his solution with what
works for mine in a single post.
In Menu go to File > Options >
Mail > Spelling and Autocorrect > Proofing > Custom Dictionaries.
    First check Solution 1:
Here check if default dictionary is CUSTOM.DIC or not. If it is not then make CUSTOM.DIC as default. Save and now check. It should be back.
    Solution 2:
Still if above is either not working or your default dictionary is already CUSTOM.DIC, then in the same screen (near the bottom) check the default dictionary language and match it with your System Default Language. In my case, the first option didn't work as
CUSTOM.DIC was already selected. But my System default language was ENGLISH (US) and my dictionary default language was ENGLISH (UK). Switching it back to English (US) did the trick for me.
Update: I found that regardless of the System Default Language, switching the
Dictionary Default Language to All Languages does the trick as well.
    Hope this helps.

  • Pages Alert "Couldn't contact Spell Checker."

Out of the clear blue, after much use, Pages 3.0.2 Gives me an Alert "Couldn't contact Spell Checker" and the Spell checker does not work anymore in pages. However, the spell checker woks in all other programs I use. How do I get the spell checker back in pages?
I've cleaned caches and repaired permissions and no change. English is the language being used.
    Thanks

This was a frequent topic when iWork '08 was first released. It is related to third-party spell checkers such as SpellCatcher. If they haven't been updated to the newest versions, this error comes up, especially when opening Word documents. If you have SpellCatcher or another spell checker installed, I would just try disabling it first & see if the problem goes away. If it doesn't, do a Spotlight search for "spell" & see what comes up. Trash anything that looks like it belongs to a third-party spell checker & restart your Mac.
But I don't think that's the problem you're experiencing. I've seen several users here with the problem of the spell checker not working in Pages. All of them were fixed by deleting the com.apple.iwork.pages.plist found in HD > Users > (your account) > Library > Preferences & then restarting Pages.

  • Spell Checker wont check

Hello. Please advise. Spell checker does not seem to recognize mistakes. Have been inside options and checked or unchecked all suitable boxes. Sadly no luck. Has anyone have any suggestions how to resolve this. Thanks. Charles

    Hi Charles,
It depends on where you are in the world and what "locale" you have selected in LC (File/Form Properties).
If we set the "Locale" to English (Ireland). where we are located, the spell checker will not work.
For example the "English (United Kingdom)" spell checker works, so that is what we set our locale to for functioning spell checking. The spell checker does not work for all locales.
    Check out for the warnings:
    Good luck,
    N.

  • WebAccess inline spell check

When using IE7 the inline spell check (spell checking while you type) does not work although using the spell check button does spell check the message correctly. What setting in IE7 needs to be set up to allow inline spell checking? The inline spell checking works OK in Firefox.

    That's a browser feature, not a WebAccess feature. I don't believe IE
    has inline spell check.

  • Spell Check Box stays up even after sending mail.

Lion truly has some bugs. More annoyances, which is what bugs are I guess. I noticed that in Mail now, after you hit send and cycle through all the spell check changes, the spell check box remains open, even after you've sent the email off. I know it's just one click to close it, but it makes you think the mail didn't get sent. It's so more official when everything just closes up, you know? Am I being too picky here?

yep same here, my spell check box stays open - any fixes?

  • When I right click, I can't copy or spell check or open a tab in a new window.

When I right click on a picture, it doesn't give me the option to copy or to view in another tab as a separate image from the web page it is on. I no longer have the option to spell check. When I highlight text to copy, it doesn't give me an option to copy it but only says "copy link location". I can open a new tab by holding down the control key and clicking the link I want open in a new tab but when I right click and click "Open in new tab" it does nothing. This started happening about a week ago.

You can try to update to Firefox 21 that has been released today.
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window or otherwise make changes.

  • How can I enable spell checking for a text box that is just one line, e.g. subject in e-mail?

In a prior version of Firefox I found a website somewhere that told me what to do to enable spell checking for text boxes that are just one line. I got used to being able to send an e-mail with a Subject Line that didn't have a misspelling. Now it doesn't work. Please tell me how I can enable that again. I am on a Mac using Firefox 6.0.2. Thanks!

    See:

You can set the pref <b>layout.spellcheckDefault</b> to <i>2</i> on the <b>about:config</b> page.
To open the <i>about:config</i> page, type <b>about:config</b> in the location (address) bar and press the "<i>Enter</i>" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.<br />
If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.<br />
*Use the Filter bar at to top of the about:config page to locate a preference more easily.
*Preferences that have been modified show as bold (user set).
*Preferences can be reset to the default or changed via the right-click context menu.

Everything, Numbers and Pages et al, always default back to US English. To cap it all we sell luminaires (yes this is a word used in our world of lighting design everyday) Mac and Microsoft always default - my docs have more words underlined in red that not. I once found a permanent solution for Microsoft that removed US english - and then the laptop died. Can anyone rid me of this irritation.

    GOT IT FIXED!  WOW!
I did better than filing a bug report.  I went to Apple support, chose chat support.  When it wanted $15 or was it $19 I filed an exemption which was a choice on the page, based on the fact that I recently upgraded to Yosemite.
Got the chat fellow and here we go!!!!  ;-)  First off he sent me this app so he could see my screen.  Then he had me do a few things  like move the system configuration folder to the desktop and repair permissions.  Then he had me reset the SMC and Pram.  Nothing helped, all the ghost computers still showed in the finder.
As a last resort he had me reset my Apple Airport Extreme.  Wala!  Ghost Computers GONE!  He said it was a combination of stuff but mainly it was the airport extreme when I installed Yosemite.  Something to do with my network.  We'll see if it holds or if the problem comes back but as of now there's no more ghost computers in the sharing part of the finder.
Thanks to all who offered suggestions.  I hope maybe this helps someone else.
