Mystery Glitch

The following statements:
import fl.controls.UIScrollBar;
import fl.controls.ScrollBarDirection;
are producing the following compile time errors:
1172: Definition fl.controls.UIScrollBar could not be found
1172: Definition fl.controls.ScrollBarDirection could not be
found
These errors are repeated twice in the compiler error output.
If I drag a scrollbar onto the stage then delete it, these
errors don't appear and the test file compiles normally.
A few days ago this problem did not exist, but any import
directive now seems to produce this error.
Being very new to Flash and AS, I'm totally baffled.
Thanks in advance!
Alan

Thanks, Rob. That solves it, and explains why dragging a
component onto the stage then deleting it makes it go away. I'll
ignore the fact that there is no logical reason for it on the
surface, and assume there's is some engineering logic hidden in the
depths. :)

Since the recent OS update, when I open my ipad cover to start it up, the top bar where it has the time and battery percentage, it blinks blue. I thought at first maybe it was notifications, but ther are no notifications, it just blinks. Any ideas what this is?

That's part of the mysterious glitches in the world of information technology, probably a flip-flop that went flip, but never flop or vice versa, similar to that bizarre "klonk" in the middle of the night in our houses...

Today I was watching a movie, and as i was changing the audio settings in the features menu, the menu stuck open and the beachball came up. video stop but the sound kept going and I could not bring up the dock or force quit, though the mouse still worked. I've tired to replicate it but so far it has been fine since. Im just wonder if this a known issue or is something on my end

Welcome to Discussions - computers love to annoy us with mysterious glitches. I wouldn't worry unless the problem repeats, then I would take a look at the amount of RAM and make sure that there's at least 10/15% of free space on your hard drive.
If the problem recurs, do post back.

  • Final Cut audio levels

Recently I've noticed that when I import an audio file, it plays back considerably louder than the original file - to the point of clipping.
Any ideas why this is happening? I know that trashing the prefs might fix it, but I'd rather find the setting that's causing this. Or maybe it's just a mysterious glitch.

A great number of CDs are normalized so that the music peaks as close 0db as possible without clipping. Not all music is finalized this way. It may be that other sources you have used are not setup for these levels.
Why is there a distortion issue with the 0db stuff? Well, audio is additive. When you drop that material into a FCP timeline with other audio, the combination will drive things over the edge.
    Have fun.

  • [SOLVED] rEfInd Started Hanging on Boot

I have my computer set up to dual boot Arch and Windows 8 using EFISTUB and rEFIfind as described in the beginners' guide. This had been functioning well for the last month or two but this morning I found that the computer would just hang after printing out:
    Starting vmlinuz-arch.efi
    Using load options 'root=/dev/sda7 ro rootfstype=ext4 systemd.unit=graphical.target'
The only thing that I've done since my last Arch boot is to install and run DiskInternals Linux Reader 1.6.4.0 on my Windows partition. I needed to grab a file from the Arch ext4 root partition and didn't think that a read operation could result in any corruption. I can still run this program in Windows and everything appears to be in order on the ext4 partition so I'm not entirely sure if this is related.
I did forget to set up systemd to copy over '/boot/vmlinuz-linux', '/boot/initramfs-linux.img', and '/boot/initramfs-linux-fallback.img' to the efi partition when they change which I thought might have caused this problem. I did this manually from Windows however and it had no impact on the behavior. If anybody could point me in the right direction here I would really appreciate it.
My refind_linux.conf contents are the following:
    "Boot to X" "root=/dev/sda7 ro rootfstype=ext4 systemd.unit=graphical.target"
    "Boot to console" "root=/dev/sda7 ro rootfstype=ext4 systemd.unit=multi-user.target"

Last night I updated all of the packages on my system and this issue returned. I tried doing the fsck again (it said it was clean) but it made no difference. I also tried copying the necessary files from /boot to the EFI partition by hand and this all made no difference. When I updated the system the kernel was updated to 3.7.9-1.
Anybody have any other ideas for what I could try?
Try reverting to kernel 3.7.7. There are some as-yet-mysterious glitches involving booting via EFI with Arch kernels 3.7.8, 3.7.9, and possibly some other releases of the 3.7.x series. The EFI problem doesn't seem to affect Arch kernel 3.7.7, though.
If you want to read about the problems -- and possibly get further confused! -- you could take a look at this thread.
Either way, I don't believe your problem is related to filesystem errors, which is what fsck addresses.

  • Mysterious sound appears in my movie after burning

I originally posted this in the iDVD forum, since it seems to be an iDVD issue, but since no one answered I thought I would try here:
I made a 10-minute video in iMovie '09 and burned it to a disc using iDVD 7.0.4.
The movie itself is completely silent with the exception of music I added. To achieve the silence, I brought the volume level down to zero on all the clips. I then added the music tracks.
When I preview the movie in iMovie, it looks and sounds great. But after I burn the disc using iDVD and watch it, I notice that at a few sections lasting a few seconds near the end, you hear what sounds like camera noise. It's as if the muted volume became unmuted for a few seconds here and there, and you hear what sounds like the camera humming or other unidentifiable white noise.
This only happens on the finished DVD. In iMovie (before burning), the sounds are not there. I checked all the volume levels on all the affected clips, and they are all at zero.
Note that I am only describing it as camera noise because that's what it sounds like. I have no evidence that it is camera noise.
Can anyone help me get rid of this noise that's ruining my movie? Thanks.

    John,
In a late-night stupor I decided to double-check those altered clip speeds.  Sure enough, a few of them were not kosher!  Err, I mean, not presets.  I tweaked them to preset levels, and voila!   No more mysterious noise!
This was quite unlike the problem I had last year that you helped me with--in that case, the manifestation of using non-presets was that at a certain point in the video, the audio tracks became completely disengaged from the video. So you'd have people moving their lips silently and then you'd hear their words 10 seconds later.
Makes you wonder if they fixed this particularly annoying glitch for iMovie '11?!

  • Iphoto glitch with retained masters

    Mavericks 10.9.4
    iphoto 9.5.1
I am currently having a mysteriously bulky iphoto even after deleting most my photos.
How can I delete the masters of iPhoto without losing my photos in the main iPhoto display library and all their masters and edits.
I take loads of photos and import them and then will keep only 4% of the ones that I import.  As a result I have a masters folder of over 60GB and actual photos that take up less that 5 or 10 GD.  Is it possible to delete the master folder without losing all the photos and without having to pain stakingly go through every folder and pick out from literally hundreds the ones that i kept and edited.  How do I reduce the size of the masters just down to the ones that I have kept and not every single photo and video that I imported in the history of my iPhoto experience.
Is there a way to just delete the masters that are no longer in the iPhoto library, while keeping the masters and edits of the ones that I clearly want to keep because they are the ones that I did keep.
There is nothing in iPhoto trash or in my computers trash at all so that would indicate to no permission issues.
I did an iPhoto repair. I found that about five thousand photos reappeared in one event that had many multiple events combined in it from the past.  I deleted those reappearing photos and my library size shrunk from 60GB to 45GB, which is a great start, but when I look in the master file there are still tons of unwanted photos and if they were all deleted I would expect the whole thing to shrink to about 15 GB’s
Are there any suggestions? Could I upgrade to a better photo program and delete iPhoto while taking just the photos I want and their masters. I am happy to abandon ship on iPhoto if it is having bugs or glitches all around and there is no foreseeable repair.

Someone told me this ~ "There is a reported bug that if you delete a photo then merge or otherwise organize events prior to emptying the iPhoto trash that the master is not deleted" ~ that is what I do every time I organize things so I am wondering how to get rid of this bug or repair it and how to clean up my files to reflect what I want.
Yes there is such a bug.  You can recover your "missing" masters and delete them but it will cost your your projects, i.e. books, calendars, slideshows, etc.  The best solution would be to restore a backup copy  of the library before the deletion and joining of events occurred.  However, it would not have your newer photos.
Here's how to find and cull out those masters:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.>Click on the Add Library button,
2 -  select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
3 - make sure that in the rebuild window the checkbox  "Scavange orphaned photos" is checked.
4 - now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
5 - in the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed. Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.
This will give you a new library with the missing masters grouped in an Album titled Scavenged Photos
from which you can delete them correctly.

  • P2 import problem - solved but still mysterious

I posted yesterday about my P2 files that had imported before but suddenly did not - with that scary "incomplete or corrupt file" message.
I keep a cloned backup of my OS and all software on another drive that can be "cloned" back into my main drive. (great software- Carbon Copy Cloner - downloadable shareware, but leave the kind creator a donation.) It takes time to clone everything but not nearly as long as starting from scratch with disks, numbers and a zillion fixes and updates. Just be very careful to save everything like user files and desktop stuff.
Now, starting again with the pre-problem "cloned" osx and fcp, which are back to 10.4.6 and 5.0.4, the P2 files are importing perfectly again. So clearly the problem was not "incomplete or currupt" files, but some mysterious software glitch that occured in OSX or FCP? If anybody has any thoughts, I would love to dig deeper into this mystery in case it happens again. Meanwhile, if you are told that your P2s are "incomplete or corrupt" and you haven't messed with the locks or txt file at all, don't despair. Wouldn't it be nice to get an error message that said "Whoops - no idea what's goin' wrong honey - but it ain't necessarily your fault"

    Hmmm...so the static isn't consistant?
Try looking at the footage with something like the Panasonic P2CMS reader/importer:
    https://eww.pavc.panasonic.co.jp/pro-av/sales_o/p2/cms/index.html
Or try HD Log or P2 Log from www.imagineproducts.com. See if Raylight sees this (www.dvfilm.com - demo available).

  • Text to speech problem/glitch in 10.6.8

    Hello,
I have recently been having problems with my macbook pro running Mac OS X 10.6.8 announcing the time, and more recently I have had a general text to speech problem. It used to annouce the time perfectly every hour, however now whenever the time changes to noon or midnight in announces instead "it is now 12 o *garble" with the garble sounding like the computer glitching or like a cd skipping. That wasnt too big of problem but now it has started to effect my ipod shuffle, and text to speech messes up the pronuciation on about half the songs on it. Does anybody have suggestions or have they dealt with a similiar problem?
    Thanks!

Try some hardware resets first.  This is reseting PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
    and resetting SMC (power management)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
If that does not help, then it is more likely to be a software issue affecting the overall OS.  It might be a third-party system extension that is causing a conflict, or some system component may have become corrupted since the original installation.  System extensions are installed here
    <startup volume>/System/Library/Extensions/
but it is often difficult to see anything that is obviously wrong.  If you see anything listed that is obviously for hardware or software that you no longer use, you can try removing it.
Short of doing a complete re-install of Mac OS X, it may help to apply the 10.6.8 "combo" update manually.  This will re-install all the system components that have been updated since the initial 10.6 release.  It can sometimes fix mysterious problems that are difficult to diagnose precisely.  This is the combo updater for 10.6.8.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
NOTE:  Before doing a system update, you should have a good backup.  If you have been using Time Machine, that will serve as your backup.  Things can go wrong during system updates, and you don't want to end up with an unbootable system, with no backup.

  • My 23" HD display shows pink glitch lines or complete pink intermittently

This morning, for the first time, I noticed intermittent pink, glitch lines on my 23-inch HD display, and then a little while later, complete pink screens, again intermittently. During the day the problem seemed to have gone away. But then tonight it's back, sometimes in a sustained manner, all pink. I checked the obvious such as cables. I looked for previous reports of the same problem but didn't see anything exactly like mine. Found lots of other pink issues, going back a while. Worrisome.
I'm having flashbacks of just about the same sort of problem happening to my Macintosh Performa! A CRT display! 12 years ago! Almost in a similar fashion, even, seemingly exacerbated by bright, white things to display. An internal cable problem, I seem to recall.
My limited 1-year warranty ran out... about one month ago... Needless to say, I'm disappointed to see this happening so quickly. Even my PowerBook G4/12-inch and its dull display and dead pixel from day-one have been more reliable. Didn't even get to watch a whole lot of HD content, as I'm still waiting for a Blu-Ray Mac to come out. Thus I'm preparing myself for this to cost me. Hopefully not too dearly. I just acquired a Time Capsule and I have to replace my old AirPort Express for being incompatible with my upgraded wireless network. Ouch.
Am I missing something simple for how to fix this problem myself or can I start planning my trip to the store?

You seem to be sure the display is at fault. After 4 days of testing by an authorized service provider (and an 85$ diagnostic fee, which I just found out today the Apple Store does not charge, duh), the problem CAN be reproduced when my Mac mini and 23" HD display are used together, BUT NOT when each is tested separately with another mini and monitor (admittedly not a 23" HD), in order to isolate the problem to one or the other. How does anyone decide then how to proceed, what to keep, and what to fix or buy new again?
I know I posted to the All Apple Cinema Display forum. I did so because my display is showing evidence of a problem, but where this problem lies, with the display, the cabling, or the Mac mini is still a mystery. Apple Support suggests I go to the Apple Store, but how long do I have to go without my computer and display until the problem can be isolated? How long will they test it anyway if the problem never shows up?
I'm almost wishing the problem is with my Mac mini. Maybe I should post on that forum. I'm beginning to wonder whether the graphics GPU is simply failing at driving my 23 HD display. Anyone? Please.

  • Screen shot mystery

I had a little glitch with my 1st Gen iPhone, telephone numbers disappearing from contacts, but fixed it by turning off contacts and then turning them on again. But.....here is the mystery. After I did this, in my camera roll on the iPhone a new image appeared. It is a perfect screen shot of my Text Messages window, with a series of messages recently listed. How on earth did that happen? Can the iPhone take internal screen shots of its own windows?
Message was edited by: Colin McClelland1

Thanks guys. It was a facility I didn't know existed, to be honest. Yes, it's quite probable I unwittingly took a screen shot, as to try to solve the contacts problem first I powered off and rebooted and so I may well have hit the combination described without realising it. I know it's not strictly germane to this thread, but have either of you ever had the phenomenon of the phone ringing and when you try the 'slide to unlock' the screen goes black and the phone keeps ringing and you cannot access anything for a few minutes (usually losing the incoming call in the process)? It's happened to me about three or four times.

  • I was given some advice here to restore my macbook OS that was having a glitch I now realize was nothing, by sliding in the original OSX disk at start up and holding the C key down?

So now my problem is herindous, my mac is crashed and it says I need to click repair disk if repair fails back up and erase the disc?
I have limited access to anything and would like to know how to back it up if possible, I have bought a 500G seagate, but nothing seems to be working
I have the snow leopard disc in it and it is open with Disc Utility, the repair disc did not work so I need to back up and erase, BUT HOW?
Please any one with some competence as far as knowing what they are talking about so I can get off this DELL Windows laptop, It's miserable!
Please good reliable advice needed with step by step blows for recovery, I have the MAC OS X Installer  open showing both the Macintosh HD and the FreeAge Drive side by side,
Can I just load the Snow Leopard on the Freeagent and operate my computer like that to get by?
    HELP PLEASE?
Sound confusing, I have been at it over 18 hours now with all involved and pulling my hair out!
Sincerely grateful for some reliable advice from a mac expert!

Me again, I am not rushing here for the obvious reasons, I dont expect to hear from you tonight (so late) hopefully 2marrow.
Thinking closer about the way you worded it I dont think I actually booted of the disk, rather just able to access (Mac OS X Installer) that further allows me to access through clicking on (Utilities),
(Disc Utility). With it open to begin the (Erase) of the free agent drive,
I click on (erase) and the options open to be chosen of Format:
included in those options I don't have what you listed for me to choose, the available options are:
    Mac OS Extended (journaled)
    Mac OS Extended
    Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitave,journaled)
    Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitave)
    MS-DOS (FAT)
And under that is a space for Name: and it could be anything of my choise it by default automatically put in (FREEAGENT G)
fURTHER DOWN AVAILABLE OPTIONS TO CLICK ON ARE
Securiety Options: That compile 4 ranging from Don't Erase Data / to a 35-Pass Zero Out Data
And finally the slightly smaller space available for me to click on that says (ERASE....) and it starts the scrub I figure.
Now that would be the first part of two I would need to complete to hopefully get off this Dell from Windows Haties!
Step 2) It would be nice if I could just drag the Mac OS x install DVD to the FreeAgent and it would load it, and maybe it's possible?? I know everything about nothing! Famously.
But the next possible options back in (DISC Utility) when I am clicked on (The install DVD) are first aid,   erase,   and  Restore
Then other options open to click on depending on what is chosen?
I am sorry to be so handy cap needy, with my long history of (if there is anything worse that can happen it will happen to me) as it does and I have to accept the fact It can always be worse! I know yah it could, but then all mighty God would no longer have me the human hamster to bowel and toss around, and would get bored.
***************So I guess the first Mystery here is where's the (GUID) PARTITION option?*************************
Ihave found an option under (RAID) that makes more available striped, Mirriored, and Concentrated (RAID Types)
With (Format:) options the same as I listed above
I do understand if your too busy and unable to get back as well,

  • Why do I have mysterious cellular data usage (Verizon) every 6 hours on all 3 of my iphone 5's?

I have recently uncovered mysterious cellular usage on three different iPhones. I am a Verizon customer and discovered this by examining the cellular data use logs. What I found are a long series of mysterious data usage logs. I have visited the Genius Bar at my local Apple Store 3 times now to log notes and discuss the issue. It is being escalated.
    The characterstics are as follows:
All my family phones have the appropriate IOS and hardware updates (verified by the GeniusBar at my local Apple Store).
This is occuring across three phones, which happen to all be iphone 5. Two are 5 and the other a new 5s. We do have one iphone 4 in the family but the issue (so far as I can tell), is not happening on it.
One iphone 5 has IOS 7, the other IOS 6. The new 5s has of course IOS 7.
Mysterious data use happens even while connected to wifi.
Each mysterious data use log entry is exactly 6 hours apart. For example: 2:18 AM, 8:18 AM, 2:18 PM, 8:18 PM, 2:18 AM ... etc. It cycles AM and PM, same times, for a day to many days until some condition causes it to change (evolve).
The times evolve. One day it could be cycling through at one time series, then it changes to another time sequence and continues until the next condition.
The data usage is anywhere from a few K to many MB. The largest I've seen is over 100 MB.
The logs clearly show these usages are not due to human interaction. It is a program.
If cellular connection is used frequently (by the owner), the pattern is hard to pick out. Luckily, my family member is very good about only using wifi whenever possible, so these mysterious use patterns are easy to pick out.
Verizon allows access to 90 days worth of data logs, so I downloaded and analyzed them. This has been happening for at least 90 days. I have found 298 instances of mysterious use out of 500 total connections to cellular. A total of 3.5 GB of mysterious cellular data has been recorded as used in that 90 days by this phone alone. Only .6 GB of the total cellular data use is legitimate, meaning by the person.
This issue is occuring across three different phones. Two are iPhone 5, and the third is a recently purchased iPhone 5s. The 5s I have not touched beyone the basic startup. I have left it alone on a desk for 3 days, and looking at the logs, the mysterious data use in the same pattern is occuring.
So ... I am speaking to both sides, Verizon and Apple to get answers. Verizon puts their wall up at data usage. It doesn't matter how it is being used, you simply need to pay for it. Yes, the evidence I have gathered is getting closer to someting on Verizon's end.
Before pressing in that direction, I am hoping someone reading this may recognize this issue as a possible iPhone 5 issue ... OR ... you, right now, go look at your data usage logs available through your carrier's web account, and see if you can pick out a pattern of mysterious use. Look especially at the early morning instances when you are most likely sleeping.
I am hoping this is a simple issue that has a quick resolution. I'm looking for the "ooohhh, I see that now ..." But I am starting to think this might be much bigger, but the fact is, most customers rarely or never look at their data usage details, much less discover mysterious use patterns.
The final interesting (maybe frightening part) thing about all this is that I discovered while talking to Verizon ... they do not divulge which direction the data is going. This goes for any use, mysterious or legitimate. Is cellular data coming to your phone, or leaving it? Is something pulling data from your phone? We know that it is possible to build malware apps, but the catch with my issue is that it is also happening on a brand new iphone 5s with nothing downloaded to it.
    Thanks for your time

Thanks for the replies. It took a while not hearing anything so thought I was alone. I have done many of the suggestions already. The key here is that it occurs on both phones with apps, and phones still packaged in a box.
A Genius Bar supervisor also checked his Verizon data usage log and found the same 6 hour incremental use. Suprisingly, he did not express much intrigue over that. Maybe he did, but did not show it.
I think the 6 hour incremental usage is the main issue here. I spoke with Verizon (again) and they confirmed that all they do is log exactly when the phone connected to the tower and used data. The time it records is when the usage started. I also found out that the time recorded is GMT.
What is using data, unsolicited, every 6 hours?
    Why does it change?
Why does it only happen on the iPhone 5 series and not the 4?
Since no one from Apple seems to be chiming in on this, and I have not received the promised calls from Apple tech support that the Genius Bar staff said I was suppose to receive, it is starting to feel like something is being swept under the rug.
I woke up the other day with another thought ... What application would use such large amounts of data? Well ... music, video, sound and pictures of course. Well ... what would someone set automatically that is of any use to them? hmmm ... video, pictures, sound. Is the iPhone 5 succeptible to snooping? Can an app be buried in the IOS that automatically turns on video and sound recording, and send it somewhere ... every 6 hours? Chilling. I noted that the smallest data usage is during the night when nothing is going on, then it peaks during the day. The Genius Bar tech and I looked at each other when I drew this sine wave graph on the log print outs during an appointment ...

  • USB 6009 - mysterious problem

Have mysterious problems with my new USB 6009.
    I'm using LabView 7 on MacOS-X 10.3.8.
All vi's of DAQmx show "ERROR 15 - Ressource not found".
    Then I tested:
    - "lsdaq" shows the device
    - "nidatalogger" works
    - "mxbaseconfig" doesn't recocgnize it!
I realy have no idea know what to do now?
    Thank you for helping.
    Greetings,
    Stephan

I happend to stumble over the same issue and found a solution.
The problem really seems to be the firmware in the USB-device. There is
only one way (I think) to make USB600x devices work with linux:
You have to start MAX (on a Windows-box) , go to tools - NI-DAQmx configuration - NI-DAQmx USB Driver Selector.
Press "Switch" and select the BASE-Driver for your USB-Device. This
seems to write something into the device's flash memory. After this
procedure you can use the device with linux and DAQmxBase
Funny thing is, mxbaseconfig still can't see it, but nidatalogger finds it.
Hope that helps, even though this thread seems to be rather old...
