Need help connecting to a PC (running XP) from a MBP

I know very little about PCs, and I'm trying to help my brother connect to his PC from his new Mac Book.
I read the "switch" info about using Finder->Go->Connect To Server... but it doesn't seem to be working for him. I had him "share" his "My Documents" folder on his PC. I then told him to use "smb::/ip-address/". This works for me on my iMac (running Tiger), but for him it just times out trying to connect. He also tried using his PC name "smb://FamilyComputer/", but no dice. One thing that is different from mine. I use WORKGROUP as my workgroup name, he uses MSHOME on his PC. Not sure if that matters. For me, it connects to my PC and lets me pick any shared folder, for him it never connects.
One last thing, I had him use the same userid/password on both PC and Mac (like I do).
He's trying to get a lot of pictures transferred over. His CD burner on the PC is not working. He was able to get all of his music over from inside of iTunes, so I know there is network connectivity to the PC (iTunes found the PC's iTunes with out a problem).
Thanks in advance

In the Mac open System Preferences->Network pane, "Advanced" button and them click the WINS tab. There change the WINS name to the same one that is on the PC (MSHOME).
Also maybe the guide (even though it's for 10.5 or later) File Sharing With OS X 10.5 - Introduction to File Sharing With Your Mac. It might help.

  • Need help connecting to home computer on Aiport from work with afp://

    My computer at home has File Sharing enabled and is connected to a wireless network.
    I want to connect to my computer at home from work using afp://
    It is my experience I would connect to the computer with this format afp://[email protected] if it is not connected to the Aiport. But since it is using the airport, that IP address only connects to the router. How can I then tell the router which 10.0.1.* computer to connect to?
    Is there a afp:// format to use ?!?: afp://[email protected] (just an example?)

    And that is what evern other forum and webiste tells me. But no one or nothing tells me how. This iks the closest I have found:
    to implement inbound port mapping of port 548 (AFP file sharing), to the private IP address of the Mac you are trying to access
    Can you give me a step by step how to do or a link with more details.
    If I translate my french system -> Admin Airport -> Port Mapping
    Public port : ?
    Private address : 10.0.1.X
    Private port : ?

  • Need help connecting a windows network printer to my Mac (Xerox Phaser 3600) over a windows home network

    Need help connecting a windows network printer to my Mac (Xerox Phaser 3600) over a windows home network.
    My Mac runs lion and the windows desktop runs Windows XP
    I have tried for a few hours or so to connect my mac to this printer over a home network.
    For your information it does work when connected directly to my mac using a USB Cable.
    If there is no soultion could I have help getting the drivers for a Dell All-in-One Photo 926

    In most cases you can connect to the Windows shared printer from the Mac. But there is a dependence on the Mac driver being compatible. For many consumer inkjets, the vendor created driver cannot be used for this type of connection so you need to look at alternative drivers, such as Gutenprint or PrintFab. If you can tell us which brand and model of printer you have shared from Windows then we can answer your question with the preferred procedure on the Mac.

  • Need help Connecting Crystal Reports 8.5 with GBS Agency Expert 6.7.6c

    Need help Connecting Crystal Reports 8.5 with GBS Agency Expert 6.7.6c.  I need assistance on connecting these together so I can run a report.  I am not an IT person so if someone could dumb it down it would be great.
    Thanks,
    NBGHealth

    Hello,
    I assume GBS Agency Expert 6.7.6c is some sort of database or data source? If you have an ODBC driver then create or use a System DSN to the database. Then you can create a report using that DSN.
    Otherwise I suggest you contact the makers of GBS Agency Expert 6.7.6c and ask them how to connect to the database.
    Let them know CR is ANSII 92 ODBC 3 compliant.
    Thank you

  • Need help connecting to my home Wireless Network

    I need help connecting my LaserJer M1212nf MFP to my home wirless network. I would like to use Apple's AirPrint, and be able to print from my iPad.
    I've spent a few hours following the directions I found on the manuals through hp.com and I've had no luck. I've already unistalled and reinstalled the printer. I've also updated the firmware. If anyone can provide assistance I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you!

    This is NOT a wireless printer (see product spec: http://www.shopping.hp.com/shopping/pdf/ce841a.pdf), you can NOT add the printer to the wireless network. This printer do support LAN connection, so if your wireless router has LAN ports, you can added it to your home network by connecting a network cable from the printer to a LAN port on the router. You need then reinstall the printer as a network printer, to use airprint.

  • I need help connecting my iPhone and computer together.

    I need help connecting my iPhone to computer

    Howdy sprinklemk,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
    Take a look at the iPhone User Guide, it answers your question about how to connect your iPhone to your computer and provides additional information that you may find helpful.
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/1000/MA1565/en_US/iphone_user_guide.pdf
    You may need to connect iPhone to your computer in order to complete activation. Connecting iPhone to your computer also lets you sync photos and other content to iPhone from your computer, using iTunes. See Sync with iTunes on page 18.
    To use iPhone with your computer, you need:
    An Internet connection for your computer (broadband is recommended)
    A Mac or a PC with a USB 2.0 or 3.0 port, and one of the following operating systems:
       OS X version 10.6.8 or later
       Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, or Windows XP Home or Professional with Service Pack 3 or later
    Connect iPhone to your computer. Use the Lightning to USB Cable (iPhone 5 or later) or 30-pin the other device.
    Cheers,
    -Jason

  • I need to connect to my work PC remotely from my macbook. I think I need the citrix software. But which version and what is the procedure?

    I need to connect to my work PC remotely from my macbook. I think I need the citrix software. But which version and what is the procedure?

    Probably don't need citrix software. Is you computer in the office on LAN? Also, is the office computer setup for remote access? If it's windows then its going to be running Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) natively. If it is in fact RDP that your windows machine at work is using then you need to download RDC for mac. I use it to connect to my work computer using RDP (don't tell the "Info Tech" dude at my office) and if your not too tech savvy I would suggest trying GOTOMYPC. It's alot easier to setup. But if you have experience in setting up remote access and your Windows office machine is connected through LAN and your IT TECH has allowed port forwarding then you should be just fine with RDP and it's free!!! But are you logging onto your actual computer at work or logging into the "SERVER" through your work machine... believe me it's two completely different things.
    Basically, you'll need:
    1. Physichal IP address of work computer. (If office computer is on WIFI this won't work) use IPCONFIG commands in command prompt
    2. Port forwarding needs to be enabled by your IT Tech
    3. Remote Desktop settings will need to be enabled on the office computer
    4. Download RDC for mac (search google)
    5. Type the physical IP address into RDC and hit connect... type in credentials and your all done.
    We need lots more details though... there are many ways to connect remotely and if your office already has a system in place for remote access then any details would be helpful in determining which method will suit you best. If it's citrix just have your IT dude set it up. If you think you need citrix then good luck....

  • I need help importing navigation bars and rollover buttons from fireworks?

    I need help importing navigation bars and rollover buttons from fireworks, drop down menus and rollover states won't work!
    Thanks

    In my experience, the code created by graphics apps is less than satisfactory. And image based menus are very awkward for several reasons.
    #1 If you decide to change your menu later, you must go back to your graphics app and re-craft the whole thing.  After 2-3 times of this, it gets old in a hurry.
    #2 Image based menus cannot be "seen" by search engines, screen readers and language translators.
    #3 CSS styled text menus are better for your site's visibility, accessibility and they are a snap to edit in Dreamweaver.
    That said, if you're still married to image based menus, use Fireworks to create images only. Use Dreamweaver's Image Rollover Behaviors to create your rollover scripts.

  • Need help connecting to a database with an applet

    I am making a Java game that runs in an applet and needs to connect to a Java DB database. I created the database and table in NetBeans and now I have no idea how to connect this applet to the database. I tried using a DataSource and an InitialContext and I got a NoInitialContextException. Any help would be appreciated thanks.

    Already made the InitialContext. This is the code I used in the applet:
    InitialContext ic = new InitialContext();
    DataSource ds = (DataSource) ic.lookup("jdbc:derby://localhost:1527/GameDatabase");
    Connection con = ds.getConnection();
    Statement stmt = con.createStatement();
    ResultSet rs = stmt.executeQuery("SELECT * FROM Scenery");

  • Need help connecting to Comcast modem

    We just switched to Comcast for our church's internet service.  They installed everything today, including a commercial modem/router.  Everything is working on their end, they are able to ping the modem.  I am unable to connect.  When I run the Network Setup Assistant I get to the following step:
    You cannot connect to your ISP automatically, so you need to enter information to set up your connection. Select the appropriate item then enter the required information. If you don't know the information, contact your ISP.
    The two choices are (1) I have a DHCP Client ID. (2) I connect using PPPoE.
    All the technicians at Comcast act as though they've never heard of this and claim that I should not need either.  Obviously, they say the problem is my Mac.  Can someone help me troubleshoot this?  Thank you.

    Thanks for the response Bob.  I selected the option for "I have a DHCP Client ID" but to advance, the Client ID box must be filled in.  I have no idea what the Client ID is.  I haven't been messing with the settings.  I have Comcast at home at it works without a problem.  Prior to our switching to Comcast at the office we had DSL. I was able to connect to that without a problem.
    I've restarted my laptop and the modem multiple times.  I've tried renewing the DHCP lease.  Nothing seems to work.  It simply will not connect to the internet.  When I run the Diagnostic (in Network Setup Assistant) it eventually gets to the place where it tells me to restart the modem (which I've done multiple times).
