Network works; Internet does not

I apologize if this is a repost, I looked through everything and couldn't find anything exactly appropiate to me.
I connect on a university's LAN, no password or anything like that. All the network settings are basically "plug-and-play," if you will. Yesterday I came back to my dorm and found I simply could not get online. With most sudden changes like this, I usually suspect the ethernet cable, so I plugged it in again, checked for problems, replaced it, tried it in my roommate's jack (who's internet is functioning fine) and found that wasn't it.
So I moved on and checked my network settings. System Preferences said I was connected to the network and the internet, and a IP address was assigned to me. I left it for a while, and revisited it just now, and found no improvement. I disabled every NIC except for the ethernet controller, for good measure. However, I did notice that my shared music was showing up in my friend's iTunes. Then I logged on Bonjour, and found I could communicate with other Bonjour users. So, I am, in fact, connected to the network. Nobody else that I have talked too, even those running similar systems to me, is experiencing any problems.
So, instead of filing a complaint with ResLife, I decided that the problem must be on my end. But I cannot for the life imagine what it is. I have little experience with networking on Macs, and, so, I don't know where to start. Does anyone have any ideas?
Also, I don't have any types of security software, including internet security. I imagine the entire campus-wide network is behind a firewall, but my computer does not have an individual one.
Thanks in advance!
-Peter

Wow, thanks for all the responses!
Well, first I tried entering in those DNS servers. I tried them individually and together (and applied settings ), and there was no change.
The IP address the network's (hopefully) assigned me is: 141.164.95.xxx.
I've been careful not to turn on any proxies, although I don't completely understand the Mac's proxy set-up window. It's on the "Manual" set-up page, and I've made sure that none of the checkboxes have been checked (I have not altered them during the entire course of this incident, although I have, however, stared at them for great amounts of time, as I have stared at every screen in network preferences trying to figure out what isn't right).
I'm connecting using DHCP (no required usernames or passwords). One thing I did change was the search domain, AFTER this problem arose. When looking over the university's connection instructions, trying to figure out what may be wrong, I noticed that they said you should enter in the university's domain as the search domain, so I did. No PPoE is set-up, which is correct.
Another thing I tried was looking at the System Monitor to try to see if anything that's not supposed to be running is running (on the off chance I had downloaded some sort-of harmful program or something that cut off my access to the internet) and the list was fairly short, as I'm trying to keep all my applications closed during this diagnosis for simplicity. Everything seemed to be a system process or a widget.
I opened up the network monitor. I saw that I was recieving and sending packets. I verified this information by logging on somebody's shared music in iTunes, and rapidly changing songs, and the packet rates went up accordingly.
The Network Diagnostic tool refused to do anything; as it thinks I'm connected to a network and the internet. Apple should change it so it also pings apple.com or something; but that's just my two cents
And that's about it. I hope I'm not giving away a confusing amount of information, I'm just trying to walk everyone through what I've already tried (as insignificant to my problem as every one of my attempts probably are).

  • [SOLVED]wlan0 connects to wireless network, but internet does not work

I have a Compaq Presario A900 laptop just installed Arch on it, went through the wireless Wiki and also checked this thread: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=65467 (similar issue but I don't use any proxy). It has Broadcom card, 4311 Rev 02. I tried both the b43-firmware and broadcom-wl AUR packages and b43 works with my card.
I have tried with the shell to connect but "iwlist wlan0 scan" always returns no results. (Yes, I did try ifconfig eth0 down first as well before bringing wlan0 up). So I have tried wicd and it worked to connect me to my wireless network which uses WPA, and signal shows ~80% strength, however ping google.ca, nothing works as far as connected to the net.
Any output I should show I will if I have forgotten, thanks very much for your help!

I get wireless connection but my internet does not work on my ipad 2

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • Intermittently iphone 6 and 6 plus is wifi connected but internet does not work.

    Hi,
I have an issue where intermittently iphone 6 and 6 plus is wifi connected but internet does not work. iMessage works though.  Toggling the wifi setting clears
the issue temporarily but it occurs again.  Running iOS 8.3 now.  This was the case on iOS 8.1 and 8.2 as well.
I have tried the typical troubleshooting steps (reboot/reset network settings/disabling location services for wifi/upgrade/etc)
My router is an EA9200 router with 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz.  It is configured with all bands with the same name.
All other devices in my house works perfectly fine and has no disconnects (ipad/macbook air/tv's/receivers)
My thought is that iphone 6 cannot handle well the moving around between bands.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    David

Have you tried to reboot your router by turning off the power (you may have to unplug it from the power source), then waiting about 30 seconds, then turning it back on?  This seems to solve a lot of problems.

  • E4200/E3200 in bridge mode...Guest access works, but does not roam between routers...any ideas?

I have installed wireless in my church...main router is E4200 in the office set up as follows:
    IP: 192.168.0.1
    Subnet: 255.255.255.0
    DHCP enabled (Range = 192.168.0.4-192.168.0.103)
    Guest network enabled
    Static DNS (for content filtering)
    NAT: Enabled
Second router E3200 (in bridge mode) - connected LAN to WAN
    IP: 192.168.0.2
    Subnet: 255.255.255.0
    Guest Network enabled
    DHCP (obviously disabled)
    Static DNS (for content filtering)
    NAT: Enabled
Third router E3200 (in bridge mode) - Connected LAN to WAN
    IP 192.168.0.3
    Subnet: 255.255.255.0
    Guest network enabled
    DHCP (obviously disabled)
    Static DNS (for content filtering)
    NAT: Enabled
The 2 routers in Bridge mode are connected to a 16-port unmanaged switch (with other PCs, etc.), which is then plugged into the main router in Port 1.
SSIDs on all 3 routers are exactly the same for both main and Guest networks.
The main network works flawlessly.  The router in the office hands out IPs in the 192.168.0.XX range and you can wander throughout the church and maintain a persistent Internet connection.  File and print access works fine too from anywhere in the building.
For the Guest network, you can set up a laptop next to each router, obtain an IP address, reach the logon page and surf the Internet without issue.  So, the Guest Network works fine from each router.
However, if you wander around the church while on the Guest network (such as with a smart phone), the following happens:
-On either of the E3200 routers (in bridge mode) you get the login page as you wander into the range of each router.  I would have thought that if you logged in once, you would be good to go.
-You get a different IP from each router.  On the E3200's in Bridge mode, you get a 192.168.33.XX address.  Additionally, the gateway is 192.168.33.1.  On the E4200 (main router) you get a 192.168.3.XX IP and a gateway of 192.168.3.1.
-As a result of getting different IPs, the smart phone becomes confused and generally won't connect to the Internet.
So, it looks like each router maintains a separate list of who has entered the correct password to get onto the Guest network.  Additionally, it appears as if each of the 2 routers, supposedly in Bridge mode, is still handing out IP addresses on the Guest Network, rather than deferring to the router in the office like they do for the main network.
I have seen a lot of postings about how to put routers into Bridge mode and problems with the Guest Network, but posts that I've seen point to the Guest network not working at all, as opposed to this issue where it works; the bridged routers, though, continue to like to hand out IP addresses on it, making wandering around the church while connected to the Internet not possible while connected to the Guest network.
Anyone else experience as similar situation?  Any possible solutions out there?
    Thanks!
    -Gil
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I do understand what you were trying to do here since you would like to have only 2 SSIDs (main & guest) for perhaps easy connectivity. The reason why you were not having problems getting online wirelessly when you were connected to the main network it’s because the computer was connected to only one DHCP server since the 2 bridge routers were just acting as a switch or a passthrough device. Now with guest network access it is a different scenario, a guest network is a virtual network meaning to say it’s like your having another router embedded on your router. Since it is a virtual network, then it does not follow the parameters of the main network, hence even if the router was set to bridge mode those routers will still have their own ip address of either 192.168.33.1 or 192.168.3.1.

    Try the basics first:
Change your router channel number.  Most times this works & is all you have to do.
Disconnect & reconnect your modem.  unplug it for about 10 seconds.  Plug it back in.  Do the same for Apple’s routers.  Wait for everything to reboot.
    System Preferences>Network
    Click the Assist Me button.
In the next window that pops up, click the Diagnostic button & do the necessary.

  • Network backup disk does not support the required AFP features

I have a mac mini with two (4T) hard disks each set as target in TimeMachine. Backups have been made on both for some time. This afternoon one of the disks is being rejected as target volume, with the "network backup disk does not support the required AFP features" error.
The sparse image on the disk that is the actual time machine target shows a modification tim of 13:09, time machine reports the last backup on that volume as made on 13:08. It seems the last successful backup was made at that time. The other TimeMachine target volume on the same min reports a last backup at 15:28
So why an error now? What has happend in the last hour, or so, to cause the disk to no longer be suitable? Why only on one virtual disk?
The mac mini runs OS X 10.9.4 (13E28), the disk with the failing backup volume is formatted with Case-Sensitive Journaled HFS+, the still working disk Journaled HFS+.
This may be related: A couple of month ago  I lost the complete backup on that disk, when time machine conclude that the contents of the target volume was corrupt. At the time I blamed that at a failed backup when I had accessed the mini over ssh using SLINK when traveling. Maybe that conclusion is wrong and this is part of the same problem.
Any pointers on how to get my second backup disk working again would be much appreciated.
    Eduard de Jong

    The error message has disappeared!
Earlier this morning the disk has been used as target for a backup by time machine without triggering the error message. A backup 8 hours earlier has also been made to the same sparse image (looking at the folder names).

  • The network backup disk does not support the required AFP features.

I am trying to set up timeMachine on my new mac book pro over a regular home network on a shared network drive. I have tried everything but I keep getting "The network backup disk does not support the required AFP features." I am on lion with the lateset unpdate (10.7.4). I have even tried creating sparebundles on from tutorial that I have found online, but non of the hacks that I have tried seemed to work. Have anyone figured out a way around this? If so, can you share, it will be greatful. I could just buy the time capsule that apple sells but I already have a 2TB internal HDD in an old pc that's hosting my file server so no need for the time capsule hardware. Let me know if there is a way around this thank.

Not just any NAS.  It has to support the communications protocols used by Time Machine (some involving security, some about error detection and handling).  Some NASs never supported TM; some that worked on Leopard never got updated for Snow Leopard; and some that worked on Snow Leopard still haven't been updated for Lion.
    4) Another networked mac (not a pc)
A Mac running Leopard 10.5.6 or later.
    Are these the only options?
Those are the only options supported by Apple.  Some other destinations may work, to some degree, in some circumstances.  Some require "hacks" or other workarounds.  Most are somewhat unreliable, and, may stop working at all on the next OSX upgrade.
Side note. I've been seeing some online post of how some people are setting up TM on a networked PC drive by setting up a sparsebundle like this site:
Any thoughts? I have tried some of these examples and it don't seem to work...
Some of those may have worked at one time, in some circumstances (2 are dated before Lion was released, the other is undated).
Wireless backups are tricky enough to a supported destination, with all the security and error detection and handling Apple has been able to employ.   If your backups are important to you, don't trust them to a marginal scheme.
And, in any event, don't trust your backups to a single piece of hardware or software.  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #27 for an explanation and some suggestions.

    Thank you for your response.
I had rebooted the router (several times, actually), to no avail.
I do not know the answer to whether MAC filtering is enabled on the router.  Have tried to find info about that, but unsuccessfully.  Router is an Arris TG852G, supplied by Comcast.  I would be surprised if MAC filtering were the issue, since in addition to the computer, we have successfully connected several other devices to the wifi, namely an iPad, a Android phone and a Kindle Fire - all able to access internet pages through the wifi, and all without a need to add the device to a MAC address whitelist.  To add to the mystery, the Comcast tech was able to connect his iPhone 4 to my network and access web pages.  He was unable to connect my iPhone, however, after trying for some time.
I seem to recall reading somewhere that an iPhone cannot connect to a wireless "n" router, only "b" or "g".  The Arris router is described as a n/g/b compliant router, and as noted the Comcast tech was able to connect his iPhone, so don't know why that would be the issue here.
By the way, my iPhone does connect wirelessly to my network at home.  This difficulty is at a second home.
Any other thoughts would be appreciated.

  • The Power Supply Fan is still working, but does not appear to respond to increased loads, and its speed cannot be increased using SMCFanControl. Any suggestions?

Hi all - My mac pro 1,1 has an enigmatic problem. It's quad-core, 3Ghz, running OS X 10.7.5. The problem began some months back, when running HD video conferences, HD streaming videos and some other graphics-moderate (I won't say intense) uses, such as slide shows in Just Looking. My machine has an ATY, RadeonX1900 card and 2 monitors - both Apple displays, one being 30 inch 2560x1600, the other being 24 inch 1920x1200.
When I start those types of graphics-moderate apps, after about 5 minutes, something would crash (the monitors making a noise as it did) and the displays would both go black. The power did not appear to be fully cut off from the monitors. I think that the underlying applications, however, did not crash. So, I could still hear and speak to people during video conferences, and I could hear the sound tracks of videos.
Attempts to restart the computer and get the monitors back did not immediately work to undo the problem, if done straight away. The only way to correct the problem (so as to have the monitors work) was to wait for a few minutes and then restart.
After a lot of puzzled looking at console logs (and I confess that I am not an expert), I ran into a blank.
But, because of the timing of the crashes (after ~5minutes use) and restarts (after some minutes wait), I reasoned that the problem might be temperature related.
Once on that path of thought, I found this article:
    http://worldtv.com/blog/guides_tutorials/fixing_an_overheating_mac_pro_no_expens e_required.php
I installed both Temperature Monitor and SMCFanControl. And I experimented, and got interesting results:
Now to the puzzling bit: SMCFanControl shows that the speed of the Power Supply Fan doesn't vary much, even if I use SMCFanControl to ramp fan speeds right up. All of the other fans react to SMCFanControl, going up to and above 2500rpm when commanded. But the Power Supply Fan does not.  Having watched it for a few days now, the Power Supply Fan, according to AFCFanControl, never varies outside of a range from about 600-640 rpm, regardless of what I do with AFCFanControl.
Also (and not surprisingly), whenever the graphics-moderate apps run, when I ramp all the fan speeds up using SMCFanControl, Temperature Monitor shows that the all of the temperatures within the machine plummet, except in the power supply locations. Power Supply Location 2 is the worst affected. Because the Power Supply Fan does not react as the other fans do, the "crashes" still occur.
I could post some screen shots of the read outs of SMCFanControl and Temperature Monitor, although I think I have covered the key points in this post.
It seems that the Power Supply Fan is still working, but does not respond to increased loads.
Instinctively, I'm worried that if that's right, it might be a hard problem to fix. Any suggestions? Help! I would really appreciate them!
    Cheers
    P

Thanks for your response Grant. I had already read about, and I think excluded, dust in graphics card/fan/assembly as a cause. The entire inside of the computer, including the graphics card/fan/assembly, is as clean as a whistle. It looks clean. I've cleaned the dust out every now and then (including a few days ago). Also, my undersanding (derived from the article, linked in my first post) is that I might expect to see high temperatures in the Northbridge and memory module B if the graphics card was overheating. According to Temperature Monitor, however, locations do not increase in temperature when I run the relevant apps. Finally, the graphics card/assembly does not feel too hot to touch.
It is strange that SMCFanControl lists the Power Supply Fan as being software controllable, if that fan is not. Still, your comments are consistent with my observations, as the fan simply does not respond to software control.
There are two upsides: First, I've something of a work-around. I've worked out what temperature must be achieved in Power Supply Location 2 for a crash to occur, and I can watch that location in Temperature Monitor, terminating the process before that treshold is reached. Of course, that's not ideal. Second, ramping all the other fans up does significantly delay the onset of the problem, and makes recovery time much quicker.
Is there any donwside to peridically ramping up the other fans when running the relevant apps? Given that it causes all of the other locations to cool significantly, could this lessesn the life expecancy of the mahcine? (I don't want to run the fans up all the time - that's like sitting next to a jet ready for take off!)
Also, a correction to my first post: Yesterday, with all the other fans running on full and running an HD streaming video, the Power Supply Fan did, eventually, slowly, come up to ~740rpm, which is much higher than the ~640rpm maximum I had previously seen, and this may have aided delaying the onset of the problem.
I'm not sure where this leaves me? The problem might now be able managed. Well, sort-of. But it's not eliminated.
