Networking trouble Snow leopard

Help. My wife's new MacBook Pro does not appear to my MacBook Pro. Both running Snow Leopard both with file sharing enabled. Yet when I open Finder I can't see her computer. she can see mine but not access my files.
Thanks for your assistance

I misread your issue. If you've got MacBook Pros then cable is not an option. Defeats the purpose. I've been running all sorts of combinations of 2 x iMacs, a home-built PC, a Medion Laptop and a Dell Netbook on wireless direct to modem/router, via Airport on #1 iMac and cables. The NetBook is exhibiting similar "invisibility" and connectivity as the iMacs when using wireless. The common denominator here is power saving (ENERGY SAVING options). The old PC and the Medion do not have the sophisticated power saving options on the iMacs and Netbook. I'm trying different options on #2 iMac and so far have stable internet connection but the main-drive disappears from view when the screen switches off (I suspect). "Wake-up" does not appear to work. The Netbook is experiencing same disappearing of the drives when screen powers off.

  • Networking imac (snow leopard) to power pc (tiger)

Trying to network my new iMAC (snow leopard) to my older Power PC (tiger). The iMAC can see the computer, however it comes up as connection failed every time I try to connect. I have other macs network to both of these computers, however there seems to be an issue with this iMAC to Power PC/TIGER.

Not that I can offer any help with the OP's problem but I also have a similar issue. In my case, I have three computers: an iMac i5 quad-core running Lion (10.7.1), a mac mini core 2 duo (the last one made just before the i5 versions) running Snow Leopard (10.6.8), and an iBook G4 running Leopard (10.5.8). The Lion machine and the Leopard machine can share via AFP and Screen Sharing both ways just fine. The Snow Leopard machine sees the Leopard machine and can share via AFP but gets a "connection failed" when attempting a Screen Sharing. The Leopard machine can see the Snow Leopard machine in the Finder but attempts to connect to it via AFP or Screen Sharing gets a "connection failed" message. Neither the Lion nor Snow Leopard machines see each other in Finder.
On the Lion machine I can do a manual "connect to server..." with the SL machine's IP and can get an AFP connection but only for a few minutes before a message appears on the Lion machine that says, to the effect, that the SL machine had some sort of issue and dropped the connection. The same goes for a manually started Screen Sharing session from Lion to SL.
On the Leopard machine I can also connect to the SL machine via the manual methods, but after a few moments an error message pops up on the Leopard machine that says there was a problem with the SL machine, and the connections get dropped.
On the SL machine, I cannot even connect manually to the Lion machine but can do the manual connections to the Leopard machine, that is until the connection gets dropped after a varying amount of time.
All three machines can find the HP Photosmart printer/fax/scanner that is connected to the AirPort Extreme wirelessly. The SL machine has the oft bemoaned problem with printing that everyone still seems to have problems with but the Lion and Leopard machines use the print/fax/scan device without issue. The Lion and SL machines are connected wirelessly to the AirPort Extreme; the Leopard machine uses an ethernet connection to the APExtreme. All computers and the printer have statically assigned local IPs within the assignment range of the AP Extreme.
The baffling thing about all of this is this... CrashPlan works and is backing up all of the machines to each other without issue. I don't have any other third-party networking software shared among them but it appears that only the Apple software (Finder, Screen Sharing, and the AFP protocol) seems to have a problem and it seems to be centered around the SL mac mini.
No problems existed when the mac mini (purchased late July 2011) came out of the box. It was only after the software updates took it from 10.6.4 (it's factory installed version) to 10.6.8 that these odd networking issues ensued.
Lion is expected to be installed on the SL mac mini at some point in the future but, until the users of that mini find suitable replacements for their old PPC-based software they still use on a daily basis, that upgrade is put on hold.
Any ideas on how to even begin to troubleshoot this kerfluffle? I'm tempted to wipe the HD of the mini and restore the factory 10.6.4, reinstall the apps, and copy the users' files (but not preferences, caches, etc.) back into newly created user accounts. What's stopping me is that the users of this machine do not want me to do so until such time they're ready to install Lion on it. :/
Appreciate anything that is constructive... thanks.

  • Wireless Network on Snow Leopard

    Hi,
I am fairly new to Macs, and apologize if i ask a stupid question however.....I was wondering if someone would spend a little of there time and help me out with a few things. Completely high level at the moment.
I have an Imac running snow leopard and in the next few weeks will be purchasing a mac book pro. I wish to set up a wireless network which i understand i can do via airport utility.
First Question - How do i set up user accounts on the network, so that when a user logs into one of the two macs, there greeted with a login notification. When they log in there connected to the network and can i administor these user names through my Imac which will be the admin computer.
Second Question - In the near future i hope to purchase a mac mini running snow leopard server, and then user server admin tools to adminsitor the server remotely, again through my Imac. Again, when the users log in via there network passwords, they are connected to the network and server automatically.
Any help would be massively appreciated, thank you in advance.
    Dan.

You can centrally administer user names and passwords, and some user settings such as Finder and Dock preferences. To get an idea of what's possible, read the documentation for Snow Leopard Server. You can also install Server Admin Tools and use the Workgroup Manager application to administer user accounts on your own Mac, even under the client OS. At the authentication prompt, enter "localhost" as the server and use your local admin name and password.
Note that Mac OS X 10.7, due out later this year, will have the server components included, presumably as an optional installation. If you're willing to wait, you can save some money, as SL Server is quite expensive.

  • Setting up a Home Network w/ Snow Leopard server

I would like suggestions on how to best configure a home network.
One of my main goals is to enable my 5 kids to share 3 computers and my mini server.
I would like them to each have an account with the same files and set up available on each computer.
My wife and I also have laptops connected to the network.
    My computers are listed below.
I have Airport extreme and some external hard drives also.

Is it advisable to use the same Hard Drive that the server is running off as a sharepoint?
It doesn't matter too much - the only issue is from a restore point of view - what will you lose if the server creams in? From that perspective, it probably makes sense to have the OS on one drive and the 'shared area' (if that's what you're going to do) on the other drive. Then, once you have everything set up and working how you like, use Disk Utility or CarbonCopyCloner or something similar to image the OS drive onto an external HD for speedy restore purposes, and maybe set up Time Machine on the server itself to back up the shared area and probably the /Users/ directory to another external drive - 1TB+ if you have it.
Remember that in order for the drive to be useable as a TM destination, it has to be formatted in a way that OS X can understand, so GUID partition table and probably Mac OS Extended (Journaled). The reason I point that out is that some NAS drives (you mentioned a Hip something or other which I'm not familiar with but may fall under this category) run their own partition tables etc, sometimes even running their own OS (which can be Win 98 or similar) thus rendering them useless from this point of view.
Other things to think about are how you're using your space. Remember that if each user account has iTunes with a load of songs, that is going to suck up space on your server very quick. If that's the case, perhaps consider dumping everyone's songs onto a sharepoint and setting that as the iTunes storage location for each user's iTunes. Alternatively, with iTunes 9 you can now share music libraries between multiple computers (providing they're all using the same Apple ID). Of course that throws up iPod/iPhone syncing problems, so keep it all in mind.
Furthermore (I think you've already mentioned this), see what you can put on the shared area instead of in users Documents folder. For example, if one of them has a load of family photos - put them all on the shared area. Stuff you don't want the kids to have access to (financial documentation etc) can still be put on the shared area, but can be protected with user account-based permissions (this is where server OS's and networked user accounts really come into their own), or just leave within one user account.
And for goodness sake, especially if you have things you don't want the kids to have access to, don't let the main server account be the one that the kids use to log on to the server for every-day purposes, since they will then have access to everything (since the main admin account on any mac is by default 'root', which means it is the account which is allowed to do absolutely anything to an OS, including changing permissions etc etc)

  • Snow Leopard and intermittent network

I upgraded to Snow Leopard a couple of weeks ago, and now have 10.6.1. I also have Comcast for my internet service provider.
I have three Macs, and a couple of PC's, all connecting on my network through an Airport Extreme. All software settings (on the Macs) are up to date.
When I first installed SL, everything seemed fine. Now, I have a problem where every 20 seconds or so, the network connection drops. This is on at least two different Macs. (Both with SL.) When I run Network Diagnostics, Airport & Airport Settings stays green, but Network Settings, ISP, Internet, and Server fail. When I run network diagnostics from Safari, I go through its steps, and the network connection immediately comes back on line. After a few seconds (about 20 or so), the Network Settings, ISP, Internet & Server fail again. So, I can load one or two pages at most, then the network fails again, over and over.
I reset my modem for Comcast yesterday, and the connection seemed better, and I had hoped it was fixed. However, this morning it started constantly losing the connection again.
    Any ideas?

    Deb,
Thanks so much for your help. Unfortunately, I've been out of town, so took a break on trouble-shooting this. I just got off the phone with Comcast, and apparently they "upgraded" something, which is breaking a lot of routers. Consequently, I'm thinking my Airport Extreme may no longer be compatible with Comcast's modem.
When I plug directly into the modem, I don't seem to have as many issues, although occasionally I can go a long time without having problems with the connection, through the Airport as well. When I'm using my Airport Extreme, I may have perfectly good connection with one computer, but dropping the connection all the time with another. Right now, my iMac is working fine (through the Airport Extreme), but my MacBook is constantly dropping connections also through the Airport Extreme, so I have to use Network Diagnostics every time to load even one page. The computers are sitting next to each other, very close (less than 1 foot) away from the Airport Extreme. I have also experienced this problem with my iMac, so its not actually computer specific. Also with an iPhone and iPod touch.
The comcast tech was (naturally) quite useless.
So, I'm not sure what might fix this problem. Perhaps it is getting a different phone/internet service!!! (The ibuprofen is not helping much either!!)
I've done some speed tests, and the speed for the connection looks great.
    Any other thoughts???
Thanks so much for any suggestions!!!

  • Snow Leopard Time Machine - Backup to a Network Drive is it possible?

I have a MacBook Pro 17" 2.5Ghz, with a 250gb harddrive, running Snow Leopard 10.6.1. I want to do a clean reinstall of Snow Leopard and I want to run a backup first. I don't have any external drives big enough for the job, but I do have network drives that have enough space. Can anyone give me directions on how to set up Time Machine to work with network destination drives? I read an online article that it was possible to do this with Leopard, though I never got it to work. If all else fails, I'll have to buy a new external drive. (Money's tight right now though.) If any of you have recommendations for good fast external drives, I'd appreciate your opinions on that too. (But I really hope I can get the network drives to work.) Thanks!

Time Machine does not back up to network drives, except Time Capsules or a drive running Leopard or Snow Leopard on another Mac on the same local network. It will often back-up to a USB drive connected to an Airport Extreme, but even that is, technically, unsupported, and may require running a special Terminal command to make it work.
    Here's the official word: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1733
You may find some hardware or "hacks" that might make it work, in some cases, to a degree. But use them at your own risk.
First, since this is *unsupported by Apple,* there's nowhere to go when there's trouble.
Second, you're risking a future update preventing it from working, and perhaps rendering your backups useless.

  • Setting up network drive from Windows XP to Snow Leopard

This works fine from my XP box to my mac running Tiger. I'm trying to do the same from my Windows XP box to my mac running Snow Leopard.
On windows I do a "Map Network Drive". I select an empty drive letter ("O", for example), then I enter for the destination: "\\server\username" (where server is the name of my mac and user name is the same user on both XP and OS X. Eventually a login dialog pops up. I enter my user name (on the mac), and the password, the dialog pops up again with "server\username" and an empty password. I enter the password again, and the same thing happens.
Do I need to enable something special in the "Sharing" system prefs? I have the following check boxes checked:
    File Sharing
    Printer Sharing
    Web Sharing
    Remote Login
On the Tiger box, I have the option to select "Windows Sharing", on SL that doesn't exist in the list.
Hope someone can help. I only use the PC to scan and then I like to drag the files over to my mac from the PC. I use a network drive set on the PC desktop for that.
    Thanks

Then you need to enter a username and password that's set up on the Mac.
I'm on the PC. I select Tools->Map Network Drive... from the file explorer. I select an available Drive letter (in this case, O:). I enter \\mymac\myuserid for the "Folder:" name. I then click on the "Finish" button. At that point it attempts to "Connect". After a few seconds I get a login dialog. That is where I enter my username and password on my mac. Actually, I am using the same user id and password on both the PC and Mac.
Why are you going to all that trouble? Here's what I do:
1 double-click the 'Network' icon on the desktop (or select 'Network' from the Start Menu)
2 locate the network share I want to use in the Network window
    3 double-click that icon.
The first time I double-click it, Windows asks me for the username and password. I type that in, and click the 'remember this' checkbox. After that I never need to enter the username and password again. (Note that this should only be done on your machines on your network...)
Note that 'Network' might have a different name, 'Network Neighborhood', for example, with a different version of Windows. I'm using Win7 Pro on most of my WInBoxes. WinXP makes things slightly more complex, but not much.
I hope this explains it better.

  • How to resolve network issue or dns to access web page on snow leopard server?

I have my network setup like as follows:
    internet > router 1 > ethernet ports > switch > router 2
I have a mac osx snow leopard server connected to "router 1", but it is so slow when accessing a web page hosted on the server from a browser on a workstation connected to either router 1 or router 2?
Is there a problem with my network setup or maybe because I changed the name to newservername.local?

    @Jeff and @Camelot,
I think it is a DNS issue.  I completely reset the DNS settings on server and the local name with the steps below, but now cannot access the site hosted on the server at all
I used a modified version of http://www.mkahn.com/2010/09/configuring-dns-on-mac-os-x-10-6-snow-leopard-serve r-for-hosting/ to reset the server set
    1.  Stop DNS Service in Server Admin
    2.  Close Server Admin
    3.  Obtain 10.6 DNS Default files (below)
    4.  Overwrite the DNS files with DNS Default files:
    /etc/dns/loggingOptions.conf.apple
    /etc/dns/options.conf.apple
    /etc/dns/publicView.conf.apple
    /var/named/named.ca/etc/named.conf
    /var/named/named.local
    /var/named/localhost.zone
    5. Restart your server
All machines have 1ms ping responses within the network including this snow leopard server that I am trying to setup.  There is another test web server that return pages instantly within this network so I doubt it is a network issue, but a DNS issue.

    Hello,
It isn't the fw in Network you want o use or look at, that's for something completely different.
My first suspect is the Power Adapter on the LaCie has gone.
At the Apple Icon at top left>About this Mac, then click on More Info, then click on Hardware>Firewire, what is listed there?
    Reset the Firewire bus
If your Firewire or USB isn't recognizing any device.  A solution which has worked for some whose hard drive became invisible in 10.4 was simply to follow these four steps to reset the Firewire/USB bus:
    1. Shut the machine down.
    2. UNPLUG the power lead to the computer and any firewire/USB drive or devices.
    3. leave it for 10 minutes.
    4. Connect back up and reboot.

  • All 30 minutes my Macs (iMac/Snow Leopard, MacMini/Lion) are loosing the connection to the Windows Servers (2 Networks: Home with Home Server 2011 (Server 2008) and Office with Home Server V1 (Server 2003)).

    Hallo,
    Hello,
I run the office and at home each a Microsoft Home Server. In both networks, in addition to various Windows computers, a Mac is available.
The particular "configuration" is as follows:
    - Apple MacMini (Late 2011, as HTPC) with Lion via wifi via AVM Fritzbox 7390 to Microsoft Windows Home Server 2011 (Windows Server 2008).
    - Apple iMac (Late 2010, desktop PC) with Snow Leopard by Lan on AVM Fritzbox 7270 on Microsoft Windows Home Server V1 (Windows Server 2003)
All operating systems on current conditions with all patches and updates.
The Fritz boxes running with the latest firmware
    Now to the problem:
Both Macs are loosing every 30 minutes the contact to the server. The connection is "re-"established about 1-2 minutes later. On MacMini (HTPC), the film or music is stopped for the above period. Thereafter, the film / music goes on. With the iMac (workstation) a document loaded from the server can no longer be saved or printed.
The MacMini has shown this phenomenon directly in connection with the WHS. However, the iMac has been working about 1.5 years with no problems. This problem only occurs for about 6-9 months
Because of different WHS and OS X versions are affected and also different Fritz boxes are used and it seems to be a general problem in the interplay Windows / OS X to be present.
When the iMac is the exact date of disconnection does not occur.
With the Mac Mini, the time can however be determined relatively easily. From the Event Viewer on Windows Server is unfortunately no clear error image. At the particular time but appeared relatively often, but not always (!) In Windows Security Logs the error 4625 (Failed to log on an account) on. This would indicate a rights issue.
Searching for a solution (so far unsuccessfully, unfortunately), I stumbled over the problem of the Server Infrastructure License Services (silsvc) in Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials (every 30 min!). Maybe a connection?

Hi, and thank you for your reply!
My reason for not posting this in the server forum is that I suspect it is a clien issue. All my other clients connect happily to the server which leads me to believe the server is configured correctly.
Only my the two MacBook Pro's are having problems.

  • Network Accounts used on Lion computers no longer work with Snow Leopard computers.

I am having issues with my network users who have once used a computer with Lion on it joined to the network then going to use a Snow Leopard workstation and Google Chrome and Safari crash randomly either at the first 30 seconds or typing a space or backspace character.

I am also facing this situation with a 2007 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Mac Mini that is running OS 10.7.4 Lion, which is not upgradable to Mountain Lion because it requires 64 bit processsing, while the Mini is limited to 32 bit. Why is Pages suddenly crippled? I've never seen anything like this. Somehow, Pages was upgraded to 4.2 and now it no longer runs even though I have upgraded to your last latest OS before Mountain Lion. What gives, Apple? I've spent thousands on your products over the years, from an Apple IIgs, IIci, Mac 6100, 7100, iMac, and on through my two iPad and five iPhones. We customers deserve an explanation, not the silent treatment. Fix this.

I 'upgraded' to Mt Lion over the weekend. It seemed very slow, and sluggish. Within a day I realized also that my Reunion program would not work,
my Quicken would not work, and who knows what else. I kept getting alerts saying that I could not use any PC programs. So, I decided to go back to Snow Leopard - I spent two and a half hours on the phone with two very capable people, then was told that I'd have to take it to an Apple Store. I DO have

call and they can't make my password work to get in!  Somehow that has changed back to an old one I don't remember!
MY COMPLAINT:  When speaking with a rep about the feasibility of downloading Mt Lion, not ONCE did anyone tell me that I 'might' have these
problems.  I NEVER would have upgraded! Now I just want my computer restored to USABLE -

What an unfortunate story.   I hope you will quickly get things back to normal.
To be fair though, there has been quite a lot written about the effects of mountain Lion and the loss of Rosetta, as one example.   I am wondering just how much research you did before buying.
But on the brighter side, you can wipe Mountain Lion and reinstall Snow Leopard with not too much trouble.   It would have been much worse had you bought a new machine with M.L. pre-installed and then found your programs wouldn't work.

  • Snow leopard not able to get on a network?

    Hello All,
I have been using 10.6.1 for about a week now and have just now run into an issue where when I am at home, my system will not communicate with any other system internally or get out to the web. It had been working fine until about 3 hours ago. I have been trying to get it to work and decided its time to ask for some help.
All of my systems including this one are on a wireless network and all of my other systems (Windows and Linux) are able to communicate with each other. My snow leopard system is the only one not able to communicate.
My snow leopard system is getting an IP address with all of the right settings to be able to connect with other systems internally and also to get out to the web but whenever I try I get absolutely nothing. My wireless signal is at full strength as well.
If I ping google, I don't get that request was sent or received, it just sits there. If I try to ping a system internally it simply tells me the request timed out. The ping tests were both attempted to a direct IP address and also to the name that the IP address is associated with.
Has anyone run into this problem? Does anyone know of any other way to debug this? Im completely stumped...
Sorry I did forget to mention, the wireless router is an old Linksys BEFW11S4 V.2 so it is several years old with no firmware updates (I don't know how to do that at all)

My situation is similar, although it began when I installed software for a Time Capsule. My MacBook Pro accessed my network just fine. After I made the TC my main base station, I've been unable to connect my MBP to the network. Any time I try to connect, almost immediately, the attempt fails. Where my problems differs is I cannot control the Airport card in my MBP. I cannot toggle it on or off, so it currently is on. The two other systems in my house are Leopard (10.5.8) and connecting normally. Seems SL is at fault for me, too.
