New ipod for me, was my friends

a friend gave me their ipod. it is still showing their name whenever i plug it in to the computer. they dont have the software disk anymore. how do i set it up to show my name and register the serial number under my name?

My dad just got the new MacBook for Christmas. His friends all use PC's and they keep sending him these joke email attatchment files that he can't open on his Mac. One was a .wma audio file, presumably some were video files. Is it possible for him to read these files on his Mac with some aditional software or not? Playing video files from your computer is completely independent of the optical drive. You could play say a Windows Media file even if you didn't have a drive as long as that file is on your computer.
That said some report problems using VLC to play DVD's (hence using your optical drive).
But to the original poster..... Flip4Mac and/or VLC that was suggested should do the trick. About the only thing that would stop those would be a WM10 file that have DRM attached and there's nothing you can use at this point. It's highly unlikely that a bunch of jokes being sent around (great way to get a virus by the way, I know you probably won't and that's why you have a Mac but you get the idea) is using WM10 though.

On the iPod turn off iCloud for calender, contacts and other things (Settings>iCloud) and turn off automatic downloading for apps and books (Settings>Store).
Aldso go to Settings Messages and Facetime and add her own email calling/messaging address and delete the Apple ID calling/messaging address.

You need to use your "emergency email" that you used to set up your iPod to change the security questions and answers.

How do I format my new ipod for windows?

I already have itunes 7 on my computer. I have read that the ipods come formatted for a mac, and you need to format them for windows. I have read about opening the updater. The updated is not listed as a program on my computer. I also would not want to run the updater and accidentally update the firmware. Some posts have said you just need to plug in the new ipod and it works. I do not expect to be that lucky.

Yesterday, i plugged in headphones, and when i took them out, it said headphones were still in it when i tried to change the volume. Now it cannot play any volume, or take in any volume, unless you have headphones plugged in and the have a built in microphone. Since i got my ipod less than a year ago, will i get a new one for free?

- Try cleaning out/blowing out the headphone jack. Try inserting/removing the plug a dozen times or so. There is a little switch in the headphone jack that disconnects the speaker when the headphone jack is inserted.

I've transferred magisto app from ipod 4 to ipod 5 but it's come up as basic account. I purchased the upgrade for £12.99 2 months ago and this does not appear on the ipod 5. I went through the motions of verifying my apple ID on ipod 5 and to purchase the upgrade again but a message came up- You have already purchased this subscription. Go to Settings>General>Reset>Erae all Content and Settings. Then setup the iPod with your account and media.
It appears that you restored the iPod from a backup of your friends iPhone. Make sure you set it us as new.

If you syncing the ipod to the computer then you can click on the little icon on the left side tool bar thats stands for your ipod, check the box that says 'sync only checked songs and videos', apply this to the ipod then you can uncheck any of the music that's not wanted on the ipod.

New ipod for me cannot get it to update or restore

What happens is when I open the installer and have it on my screen, I plug the ipod cord into the ipod itself and everything on my computer freezes for 5 minutes. after these 5 minutes I can use the internet etc., but the updater is frozen. I have let it sit for over an hour thinking that maybe it is slow. this is not working. could this be a problem with the cord? also when using the itunes after i plug up the ipod it will freeze for a few minutes then it acts as if an ipod is not connected. i have tried using several different usb ports on my computer. this is frustrating!

I got my daughter an ipod for Christmas from a friend (she's 8) and they had put a bunch of music on it that she liked, so we kept it, and I set up an itunes account for her, and set the restrictions, but have lost all of her music

So the music they had put on is all that's gone. I had synced everything, and even backed it up, but didn't know that I would have to save it to my computer separately. I actually thought it was on it, before now.
Is there any way to get her music back, without having to repurchase what someone else gave her?

Okay, but this is nothing new. Purchased content has ALWAYS been permanently tied to the AppleID account used to buy it. It has never been transferable between accounts, or playable on computers not authorized for that account.
It has nothing to do with how you sync or save your OWN music. You cannot authorize your computer for music bought with an AppleID that you do not control.

Getting Apple TV to work after new software for it was downloaded

I purchased the apple TV 2 several months ago and it worked fine. After it suggested new software I downloaded it. After that I could not operated the apple tv. It simply showed the apple logo on my tv. I reset it many times as well as the modem and apples router. The input for the apple tv is ethernet direct from the router. I have checked the itunes and have home sharing on. Any help is appreciated.

Welcome to the Apple Community.
You might try restarting the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for a 30 seconds, to begin with.
If you can't get past the logo, get yourself a micro USB cable (sold separately), you can restore your Apple TV from iTunes:
Remove ALL cables from Apple TV. (if you don't you will not see Apple TV in the iTunes Source list)
Connect the micro USB cable to the Apple TV and to your computer.
Open iTunes.
Select your Apple TV in the Source list, and then click Restore.
Do not disconnect your Apple TV's power cable during the restore process.
