Newbie with Common Best Pratice questions

I swear I have looked through the Oracle docs but have not found
the answers. These are a few burning questions I have. I have
a dev system: Redhat 7.2, Single 80GB HD, and 1GB of ram. I am
using 9i for now but may move back to 8iR3. The application is
a small database with usage similar to that of a data warehouse
(three users, 80000 records per table, Record size 128, 2000
Tables Not my scheme).
1) Should the DB_DOMAIN contain the machine Name? IE (M1)
M1.sales.US.ORacle.com. So full name would be
ORCL01.M1.Sales.US.Oracle.com, and ORCL02.M1.Sales.US.Oracle.com?
2) Whats up with JRE? My DB runs 200MB of JRE. If I run the
Change Management Pack, or a OEM Repository this can go as high
as 800+MB. Is this normal? Is this the same on Sun and NT
(jrew) or just a limit of LINUX?
3) Why do I need an OEM Repository to run the Export and Import
tool?
4)If I use an OEM Repository should it exist in the same
instance as a DB already on the machine, on a new Instance, or
on a separate machine? I know separate machines would be best
but it would require another licensee that I can't afford.
5) Why Can I not select the OLAP tools in the DBCA? I have
enterprise but it will never install.
6) If I did get OLAP running would it be better to have it in
its own instance or in the same instance as my primary
database? Does the OLAP rely on the jre like the other tools?
I have been told OLAP in 9i is Views and other tricks not stored
cubes and rollups can I create standard cubes and rollups on a
scheduled basis (only asking this because I have been unable to
get OLAP running).
7) Is DBSNMP needed for the agent to work if I only use OEM and
no snmp tools?
8) Is it better to use LDAP (Oracle Internet Directory) on such
a small system?
9) If I had a RAID5 Array would this be enough to stop
contention or should I put data on a RAID, index on IDE 1
w/mirror, and systems on scsi drive.
Thanks for any answers. I am sure they are in a FAQ some where
but I have been unable to find it I someone could point me to
good tech FAQ I would love it.
Thanks Again

  • Linux Native Multipath and ASM Best Pratices questions

    Hallo,
    I 'd like to know your opinions about some questions I have:
    I am using linux native multipath without asmlib and I wonder:
    1-
    Is it mandatory/best pratice to partition (by fdisk) device-mapper luns before using them to build an ASM DISKGROUP, or Oracle asks to
    partition them because asmlib works better on partition? In other words, is there any issues to use directly /dev/device-mapper/mpath1 or I
    have to use /dev/device-mapper/mpath1p1 with 1 MB offset?
    2-
    Is it best to give the proper user/group to mpath lun's by rc.local or by udev rules? Is there any difference?
    Please , write me what do you have experienced..
    Thanks and bye

    Assuming you need to use the whole disk,
    Partitioning it is mandatory only if you use ASMLIB as it works only on partitioned disk.
    Yes you need to partition the disk first before presented to ASMLib

    There is no need to skip first cylinder, or at least, I can't find official infos about that.
    What do you think about? TIANo need in linux platform to skip 1st cylinder, If I remember correctly you'd need to skip 1st cylinder in solaris as there is bug

  • Using XML with Flex - Best Practice Question

    Hi
    I am using an XML file as a dataProvider for my Flex
    application.
    My application is quite large and is being fed a lot of data
    – therefore the XML file that I am using is also quite large.
    I have read some tutorials and looked thorough some online
    examples and am just after a little advice. My application is
    working, but I am not sure if I have gone about setting and using
    my data provider in the best possible (most efficient) way.
    I am basically after some advice as to weather I am going
    about using (accessing) my XML and populating my Flex application
    is the best / most efficient way???
    My application consists of the main application (MXML) file
    and also additional AS files / components.
    I am setting up my connection to my XML file within my main
    application file using HTTPService :
    <mx:HTTPService
    id="myResults"
    url="
    http://localhost/myFlexDataProvider.xml"
    resultFormat="e4x"
    result="myResultHandler(event)" />
    and handling my results with the following function:
    public function myResultHandler(event:ResultEvent):void
    myDataFeed = event.result as XML;
    within my application I am setting my variable values by
    firstly delacring them:
    public var fName:String;
    public var lName:String;
    public var postCode:string;
    public var telNum:int;
    And then, giving them a value by “drilling” into
    the XML, E;g:
    fName = myDataFeed.employeeDetails.contactDetails.firstName;
    lName = myDataFeed.employeeDetails.contactDetails.lastName;
    postCode =
    myDataFeed.employeeDetails.contactDetails.address.postcode;
    telNum = myDataFeed.employeeDetails.contactDetails.postcode;
    etc…
    Therefore, for any of my external (components in a different
    AS file) components, I am therefore referencing there values using
    Application:
    import mx.core.Application;
    And setting the values / variables within the AS components
    as follows:
    public var fName:String;
    public var lName:String;
    fName =
    Application.application.myDataFeed.employeeDetails.contactDetails.firstName;
    lName =
    Application.application.myDataFeed.employeeDetails.contactDetails.lastName;
    As mentioned this method seems to work, however, is it the
    best way to do it??? :
    - Connect to my XML file
    - Set up my application variables
    - Give my variables values from the XML file ……
    Bearing in mind that in this particular application there are
    many variable that need to be set and there for a lot of lines of
    code just setting up and assigning variables values from my XML
    file.
    Could someone Please advise me on this one????
    Thanks a lot,
    Jon.

    I don't see any problem with that.
    Your alternatives are to skip the instance variables and
    query the XML directly. If you use the values in a lot of places,
    then the Variables will be easier to use and maintain.
    Also, instead of instance variables, you colld put the values
    in an "associative array" (object/hashtable), or in a dictionary.

  • Newbie with application problem and question on cam chats!!

    Hi, ive just got my macbook yesterday and I bought the student edition of adobe creative suite master edition for uni. After buying this and installing it, i wanted to save the main applications in a stack for easy access rather than going to the HDD then apps then clicking on the individual. As there are approx 14 application in this package, it is too many to have in the dock so a stack out be great.
    However when i dragged them into the a new stack it carried along all the other files with each program which was messy. So i went back and did it again but by using the app itself. When i went to open them it said it had been moved and needed repairing. So i reinstalled the lot and i now have them in the application folder again.
    Please can you help me to create a stack with all the applications, i think these would need to be short cuts but i dont know how to create them. Thanks for your time.
    Oh. Leopard is amazing. I hooked up ichat with an aim account and its wicked, only have one contact though. What other instant messenger can i use that works with the cam rather than loading up windows and msn. I currently have ichat which works and adium.

    Hi shorty,
    Welcome to the bright side of the computing universe. Here's your first lesson in Mac terminology. The Mac equivalent of the Windows 'shortcut' is called an 'alias'.
    Here are ways to create and use aliases:
    To create an alias, click the item to select it, and choose File > Make Alias (or Command - L). You can create as many aliases as you need for a single item, and you can move the aliases to folders or to the desktop.
    To create an alias for an item and relocate it in one step, hold down the Command and Option keys while you drag the item’s icon to another folder or to the desktop. Release the mouse button before releasing the Command and Option keys.
    To find the original item of an alias, select the alias and choose File > Show Original.
    Enjoy your new MacBook… =)

  • Overwhelmed "newbie" with an environment configuration question...

    This will surely display my lack of experience when it comes to both MIDI and DAW software, but:
    Page 84 of the "Getting Started With Logic" document states:
    On the left hand you see an Object named +Physical Input+. Only one of these Objects exists in the environment.
    I have multiple MIDI input devices (M-Audio Keystation 88es, Keystation 49e, and Trigger Finger). They're all connected via USB. In Audio/MIDI setup they're all recognized separately. Before I read this, I was trying to assign each device it's own Physical Input, but no matter what I did, messages from all three devices showed up on the same Keyboard Object in the environment.
    How can I (hopefully) configure Logic Express to recognize them separately, because I'd like to assign specific devices to separate Audio Instrument tracks?
    Much, much thanks (and props) for the wisdom and sharing it!

    I noticed that in my audio/midi set-up utility, all three controllers have been set to a "port 1" without the option to select a different port...
    You might just have hit it on the head... you're onto something there. I only have one USB midi interface, and it is not supported anymore, so I use it's MIDI ports instead, into my Unitor8mkii. No USB...
    Is my problem that I'm using the controllers hooked up with USB cables versus MIDI cables (say with a USB MIDI interface)?
    That might be it. I'm not 100% sure, but that might be why. You could check in the Audio Midi Setup Application (in the utilities folder that is in the main applications folder) to see if each Midi controller is setup correctly, as far as number of MIDI channels to transmit and receive on.
    And thanks for clearing up the channel splitter thing for me, if / when I get another controller, I'll be sure to try this.
    Another thought, have you tried setting up each controller to transmit on a different MIDI channel, instead of OMNI? OMNI means the device transmits on ALL MIDI channels ALL the time... this would undoubtedly cause further troubles. Try, if possible to set each device internally to it's own MIDI Xmit and Rcv channel, say 1, 2, and 3. See what happens...
    As far as the output is concerned, if you are triggering internal VIs, you don't need to concern yourself as much, except for the EVB3, which accepts different messages on chs 1,2,and 3, for different parts of the plugin. (upper,middle and foot pedals)
    Cheers

  • Newbe with a question

    First, I would like to say Hello to all of the other forummers, as being a newbe.
    And as a newbe, I offcourse have a question....
    Will the new AMD 333fsb  series processors run on my KT3 mainboard, after obviously flashing the bios?
    Thanks in advance, David.
    Config: MSI kt3 ultra, xp1800, geforce 2ti, 512mb apacer ddr2700, 7200rpm maxtor and chello cable connection.

    I heard somewhere that the chipset will support it but I don't know if MSI will work to get this board to support it.

  • ADF Faces & BC: Best pratices for project layout

    Season greetings my fellow JDevelopers!
    Our software group has been working with ADF for around 5 years and through the years we have accumulated a good amount of knowledge working with JDeveloper and ADF. Much of our current application structure has been resurrected in the early days of JDeveloper 10 where there were more samples codes floating around then there were "best pratice" documentation. I understand this is a subjective topic and varies site to site, but I believe there is a set of common practices our group has started to identify as critical to streamlining a development process(reusable decorated ui components, modular common biz logic, team development with svn, continuous integration/build, etc..). One of our development goals is to minimize dependency between each engineer as everyone is responsible for both client and middle layer implementation without losing coding consistency. After speaking with a couple of the aces at the last openworld, I understand much of our anticipated architectural requirements are met with JDeveloper 11(with the introduction of templates, declarative components, bounded task flows, etc..) but due to time constraints on upcoming deliverables we are still about an year away before moving on with that new release. The following is a little bit about our group/application.
    JDeveloper version: 10.1.3.4
    Number of developers: 7
    Developer responsibilties: Build both faces & bc code
    We have two applications currently in our production environments.
    1.A flavor of Steve Muench's dynamic jdbc credentials login module
    2.Core ADF Faces & BC application
    In our Core ADF Faces application, we have the following structure:
    OurApplication
         -OurApplicationLib (Common framework files)
         -OurApplicationModel (BC project)
              -src/org/ourapp/module1
              -src/org/ourapp/module2
         -OurApplicationView (Faces project)
              public_html/ourapp/module1
              public_html/ourapp/module2
              src/org/ourapp/backing/module1
              src/org/ourapp/backing/module2
              src/org/ourapp/pageDefs/
    Total Number of Application Modules: 15 (Including one RootApplicationModule which references module specific AMs)
    Total Number View Objects: 171
    Total Number of Entities: 58
    Total Number of BC Files: 1734
    Total Number of JSPs: 246
    Total Number of pageDefs: 236
    Total Number of navigation cases in faces-config.xml: 127
    Total Number of application files: 4183
    Total application size: 180megs
    Are there any other ways to divide up this application? Ie: module specific projects with seperate faces-config files/databindings? If so, how can these files be "hooked" together? A couple of the aces has recommended that we should separate all the entity files into its own project which make sense. Also, we are looking into the maven builds which should remove those pesky model.jpr files that constantly gets “touched”. I would to love hear how other groups are organizing their application and anything else they would like to share as an ADF best pratice.
    Cheers,
    Wes

    After discussions over the summer/autumn by members of the ADF Methodology Group I have published an ADF Coding Standards wiki page that people may find useful:
    [http://wiki.oracle.com/page/ADF+Coding+Standards]
    It's aimed at ADF 11g and is intended to be a living document - if you have comments or suggestions please post them to the ADF Methodology google group ( [http://groups.google.com/group/adf-methodology?hl=en] ).

  • Best Practices: Question about Passing DataSet to Crystal through C#

    I have used the tutorial provided by Business Objects and have successfully passed a dataset from C# code to Crystal Reports.
    I have a few questions about "best pratices" though.
    It appears that when passing the dataset to crystal then you no longer have the ability to put SQL Expressions in the report anymore otherwise errors will occur.
    So, I'm trying to come up with a way to have a custom field in the SELECT statement and have it show up on the report as a field. So, in the below example I created a custom SQL field called TIMES7 in the query.
    "Select CLM_ID, CLM, PAID_111X, *(PAID111X * 7) As TIMES7*_ From WIKI.MULCRICKET WHERE CLM_ID < 5"
    If I create a formula field in Crystal and set it's value to {MULCRICKET .TIMES7} then it works like a hybrid SQL Expression at run-time.
    This does work but has issues because the database field doesn't really exist in the design environment which causes error when the formula is saved. But it does work at run-time.
    I was wondering if their was a best practice for this?

    So why are you using a formula that doesn't work? If it errors in the designer it's telling you it's not supported.
    Drop the formula into a filed and hide it if you don't want it displayed, this way it gets into the record selection formula.
    "Best Practices" is don't use formulae that won't verify in the Designer. "If it doesn't work in the designer it won't work in code"
    If you need to add an "unknown" field at run time then use RAS to insert the field.

  • Best pratices for ODI interfaces

    I was wondering how everyone is handling the errors that occur when running an interface with ODI.
    Our secinaro:
    We have customer data that we want to load each night via ODI. The data is in a flat file and a new file is provided each night.
    We have come across an issue where a numeric field had data that was non numeric in it ... so ODI created a bad file ... with the bad record in it .... and an error file with the error message. We then had some defined constraints that forced records into the E$ table.
    My question is how does everyone handle looking for these errors. We would like them to just bereported to one place ( an oracle table ) so when the process runs we can just look at the one table and then act on the issues.... as shown above ODI puts errors in two different places... DB ones in a flat file and user defined in the E$ tables.....
    I was wondering if anyone has come across this issue and might be able to tell me what was done to handle the errors that occurr .. or what the best pratices might be for handling these errors?
    Thanks for any assistance.
    Edited by: 832187 on Sep 29, 2011 1:18 PM

    If you have got few fields affected by conversion problem you could try insert an ODI constraint or you could modify LKM to load bad file if present.

  • Newbie with a Motif ES8 - optimum setup with a minimalistic approach?

    hi,
    I'm trying to decide on the optimum setup with a minimalistic approach!
    I a newbie with the Motif ES8 and am at cross roads deciding on the type of computer setup for my VST.
    PC + Cubase vs. MAC + Logic Pro or Logic Pro Express?
    With MAC, how far do I need to go;i.e. MACBook Pro a must?
    how many USB ports (types 400 vs 800), etc?
    With Logic Pro, is Express going to be sufficient for a full soup to nuts recording and mastering given that this is for a home studio setup though with an idealist running it?
    I'm a one woman show and so don't need too many inputs/outputs. I'd be recording a track at a time and my songs take up less than 16 tracks.
    I would really appreciate any and all responses.
    Roya
    macbook pro   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    thanks for the detailed response PK
    so, the extra USB port on the HD would facilitate a
    hub type interface i.e. once you hook up another\
    device to the HD via USB, you're really hooked up to
    the computer.. right? and so, if I get a powered USB
    Hub, this wouldn't really matter.. correct?
    For the most part, you have to be careful hooking
    too many devices up to a computer WHEN you are trying
    to do some sound work. When they say a computer
    can do ABC we sometimes think that should include D.
    As for the sound interface, I already have an
    Audiophile that has midi in/out, firewire to
    computer, RCA jack for i/o. I know its not the high
    end stuff but I hope to do a stepwise upgrade here if
    at all possible..
    That actually might work, if it supports at least
    16 bit 44.1 khz that is the lowest you want to go.
    Ideally it should be 24 bit to take advantage of Logics
    24bit environment. You might be able to run the ES8
    straight into those RCA jacks if they are SPDIF and your
    keyboard has the same on the back.
    There are a bunch of people on Motifator discussion
    groups that warn against Apple's lack of support for
    Logic. Not sure if the concern is only regarding the
    combination of Yamaha (Motif) and Apple (Logic).
    I went and read that thread, here are some of my thoughts
    on some of this.
    Can't comment on MAC, but a dear friend of mine who is an audio engineer said >he had walked away from Logic after Apple bought them out. "Straight downhill" >I think is how he put it.
    Many windows users just hate Apple and their products.
    I think much of it is ignorance. They will say
    Macs are junk but when I ask them why
    they never have an answer or say something
    that is false. It sounds like this "professional"
    did not even wait to see that Logic did get better.
    Apple charges 200.00 for support of it's Professional
    applications. You really do not need it since there are
    so many experienced Logic users here that I never had
    a question go unanswered. I've noticed on those forums
    the same small group of people do most of the problem
    solving. I am not overly impressed with Yamaha's support.
    I had my questions about my keyboard answered quicker
    by those forums. So I guess both companies need work
    in this area. Frankly, for recording, I think the Motif
    and Logic are a Killer combination. Both have steep
    learning curves but once you get up to speed I think
    the results speak for themselves. The main difference
    in my opinion is that the Motif is the ultimate
    performance tool and Logic is the ultimate studio toolshop.
    After having a Motif for over a month, I am convinced
    it has a steeper learning curve than Logic take for instance
    that thread on getting your keyboard to record it's own
    audio output. The list of things to do each time is as long
    as my arm. In case you did not read it here it is.
    First thing – STORE your MIX setup and SAVE the Song to SmartMedia (or USB mass storage device) before resampling it so you have a backup. You would create a mix to balance the instruments the way you like them.
    * Select a target track, then press the [INTEGRATED SAMPLING] button.
    Setup the parameters for resampling:
    * Press [F1] DEST
    * Select a TRACK and [KEYBANK] (note) into which you will record the resampled data. You can target either an empty track or the track on which you are going to play (if you are going to play along). If all tracks are full, don't worry, you can still resample anyway.
    * Press [F2] SOURCE. Set the source parameters as follows:
    - Type = Sample - with this type the Integrated Sampling Sequencer will not create any NOTE-ON data in your sequencer, it will just simply add a new sample waveform to the waveform list
    - Source = Resample
    - Mono/Stereo = Stereo
    - Next = OFF
    - Frequency = 44.1k
    * Press [F6] REC This will place the sampling sequencer in Standby mode. Set the TrggrMode paramter to Manual
    * Press Start on the sequencer and check your levels. If too low set the REC GAIN higher +6bB or +12dB, if the level is to high (clipping- you will see a lightning bolt) lower the GAIN to -6dB or -12dB. When you have checked the levels, press STOP and return to the top of the SONG.
    * Press F6 REC to start the Resample, Press [>] (play) to begin recording the resample. The Motif ES will draw the wave as it samples.
    * When the song is over press [F6] STOP. The Motif ES will take a few moments to gather the data.
    To create the .wav file:
    * Press [FILE]
    * Press [F1] CONFIG
    * Press [SF1] CURRENT
    * If you will be saving the resampled song to a SmartMedia Card set the Current parameter to CARD. To save to a USB device, set this parameter to USB
    * Press [F2] SAVE
    * Set the data TYPE field to WAV
    * Cursor down and Name the wave
    * (If desired, navigate to the subdirectory where you want to save the *.wav file.)
    * Press [ENTER]
    * The ES will ask you which TRACK and NOTE to save as a wave file. Enter the values you selected as the sample destination in the procedure above.
    * Press and hold the AUDITION button to make sure your sample is there.
    * Press [ENTER] and the Motif ES will export the sample as a .wav to your SmartMedia card or USB device.
    Once you have configured Logic which are takes about
    3 minutes (and only has to be done once)
    and set up the keyboard which takes 30 seconds.
    (this has to be done once for each session)
    you plug your keyboard into your audio interface then
    Hit Record
    that is the whole list, two words.
    Once it is in Logic, you have many way to edit it
    and process if needed. The midi is much
    easier to manipulate and there are more
    ways than the ES has keys. Plus you can add to the
    sounds with the internal instruments which are
    as sophisticated and as high quality as the ES.
    Then if your happy with it you can create MP3's
    and burn Red book compliant CD's for
    commercial duplication.
    It really is a complete setup.
    But at any rate I'm going to do some more research on
    another scenario, i.e. what about MAC and Cubase? As
    you may know Yamaha just acquired Cubase..
    I dont think I would be the best to comment on that.
    Maybe ask one of the Gurus on the unofficial
    website for Cubase, The Cubinator.
    Sorry, I just couldn't resist.
    you've been very helpful - thanks again
    cheers,
    Roya
    Cheers!
    P.S. I agree with Dave, If you have a Macbook
    Pro you dont need another computer. If you
    wanta desktop whatever reasons I understand
    Oh and btw, what's QWERTY?
    They are the first 6 keys (top row/left to right)
    on your computer keyboard

  • Need best pratices advices

    Hey guys,
    Anyone can share with me the best pratices for the setup of an oracle database. I know that the amount of redo, grouping, file system layout, etc.. depend on the size of your BD. So to help here is the spec of my BD
    oradata : 200GB
    change rate : 50k/s (I got that by dividing the size of my archive redolog by the amount of time between the first and last archlog).
    This is a standard database (not OLTP or Data Warehouse) use to store client information
    My RPO (Recovery Point Objective) is 30 minutes
    Some quick question
    1. How should I layout the file system
    2. How many redo/group/size
    3. How many control file, where shoud I put it
    4. How I should setup the log switching
    Anyway doc, quick, don't want to read a 300 pages oracle document :-) This is why I'm looking on your knowledge
    Thanks

    Storage : SAN, RAID 5 disk onlySince it's SAN, the RAID 5 (which is generically bad for performance in any update environment) will have minimal adverse effect (because the RAID 5 is hidden by massive cache). Just try to spread the data files across as many disks as possible.
    Oracle works best for datafiles on 'SAME' (Stripe and Mirror Everything). Spread the data files across all possible disks and mix data and index to try to get randomization.
    No ASMPity. A lot of potential transparency will be side-stepped.
    OS: Solaris 10 on a M4000, (2 SPARC 2.1GHz, 4 core each), 16GB RAMFinally some meat. ;-)
    I assume Enterprise Edition, although for the size, the transaction rate proposed, and for the configuration, Standard Edition would likely be sufficient. Assuming you don't need EE-specific features.
    You don't talk about the other things that will be stealing CPU cycles from Oracle, such as the app itself or batch jobs. As a result, it's not easy to suggest an initial guess to memory size. App behaviour will dictate PGA sizing, which can be as important as SGA size - if not more so. For the bland description of app you provide, I'd leave 2GB for OS, subtract whatever else required (app & batch, other stuff running on machine) and split the remaining memory at 50/50 for SGA and PGA until I had stats to change that.

    Like I said, I espect a change rate of 50k/s, is there a rule of thumbs for the size of redo log, the amount, etc.. No bulk load, data is entered by people from a user interface, no machine generated data. Query in read for report but not a lot.Not too much to worry about then. I'd shoot for a minimum of 8 redo logs, mirrored by Oracle s/w to separate disks if at all possible, and size the log files to switch roughly every 15 minutes under typical load. From the looks, that would be (50k/s * 60 sec/min * 15 min) or about 50M - moderately tiny. And set the ARCHIVE_LAG_TARGET to thrum at 15 minutes so you have a predictable switch frequency.

    BTW, what about direct I/O. Should I mount all oracle FS in that mode to prevent the use of OS buffer cache?Again, this would be eliminated by using ASM, but ... here is Tom Kyte's answer confirming direct IO http://asktom.oracle.com/pls/asktom/f?p=100:11:0::::P11_QUESTION_ID:4159251866796
    Your environment is very very small in Oracle terms. Not too much to fuss over. Just make sure you have a decent backup/recovery/failover strategy in place and tested. Use RMAN for the BR and either DataGuard (or DBVisit for Standard Edition)

  • Best Practices Question: How to send error message to SSHR web page.

    Best Practices Question: How to send error message to SSHR web page from custom PL\SQL procedure called by SSHR workflow.
    For the Manager Self-Service application we’ve copied various workflows which were modified to meet business needs. Part of this exercise was creating custom PL\SQL Package Procedures that would gather details on the WF using them on custom notification sent by the WF.
    What I’m looking for is if/when the PL\SQL procedure errors, how does one send an failure message back and display it on the SS Page?
    Writing information into a log or table at the database level works for trouble-shooting, but we’re looking for something that will provide the end-user with an intelligent message that the workflow has failed.
    Thanks ahead of time for your responses.
    Rich

    We have implemented the same kind of requirement long back.
    We have defined our PL/SQL procedures with two OUT parameters
    1) Result Type (S:Success, E:Error)
    2) Result Message
    In the PL/SQL procedure we always use below construct when we want to raise any message
    hr_utility.set_message(APPL_NO, 'FND_MESSAGE_NAME');
    hr_utility.raise_error;
    In Exception block we write below( in successful case we just set the p_result_flag := 'S';)
    EXCEPTION
    WHEN APP_EXCEPTION.APPLICATION_EXCEPTION THEN
    p_result_flag := 'E';
    p_result_message := hr_utility.get_message;
    WHEN OTHERS THEN
    p_result_flag := 'E';
    p_result_message := hr_utility.get_message;
    fnd_message.set_name('PER','FFU10_GENERAL_ORACLE_ERROR');
    fnd_message.set_token('2',substr(sqlerrm,1,200));
    fnd_msg_pub.add;
    p_result_message := fnd_msg_pub.get_detail;
    After executing the PL/SQL in java
    We have written some thing similar to
    orclStmt.execute();
    OAExceptionUtils.checkErrors (txn);
    String resultFlag = orclStmt.getString(provide the resultflag bind no);
    if ("E".equalsIgnoreCase(resultFlag)){
    String resultMessage = orclStmt.getString(provide the resultMessage bind no);
    orclStmt.close();
    throw new OAException(resultMessage, OAException.ERROR);
    It safely shows the message to the user with all the data in the page.
    We have been using this construct for a long time for all our projects. They are all working as expected.
    Regards,
    Peddi.

  • SAP Adapter Best Practice Question for Deployment to Clustered Environment

    I have a best practices question on the iway Adapters around deployment into a clustered environment.
    According to the documentation, you are supposed to run the installer on both nodes in the cluster but configure on just the first node. See below:
    Install Oracle Application Adapters 11g Release 1 (11.1.1.3.0) on both machines.
    Configure a J2CA configuration as a database repository on the first machine.
    Perform the required changes to the ra.xml and weblogic-ra.xml files before deployment.
    This makes sense to me because once you deploy the adapter rar in the next step it the appropriate rar will get staged and deployed on both nodes in the cluster.
    What is the best practice for the 3rdParty adapter directory on the second node? The installer lays it down with the adapter rar and all. Since we only configure the adapter on node 1, the directory on node 2 will remain with the default installation files/values not the configured ones. Is it best practice to copy node 1's 3rdParty directory to node 2 once configured? If we leave node 2 with the default files/values, I suspect this will lead to confusion to someone later on who is troubleshooting because it will appear it was never configured correctly.
    What do folks typically do in this situation? Obviously everything works to leave it as is, but it seems strange to have the two nodes differ.

    What is the version of operating system. If you are any OS version lower than Windows 2012 then you need to add one more voter for quorum.
