Newline/carriage return replacement

I have an output from a database that has one column with embedded newlines or return carriages as well as a newline at the end of the record. When i export the data to a text file, the embedded newline/returns seem to contain those characters. I have been trying to use sed to replace the newlines but it does not work. I have used replacing the return carriage and that works but it seems to keep a character for either newline or carriage return. Is there a way to remove newlines inside a string while keeping the legitimate newline for the end of the record using either sed,awk or perl or any other tool. I am considering C but i may be overkill. I tried perl but since i am not versed in it i have been having a difficult time with it.
This is what i have been using: sed 's/\r//g' infile > outfile
Thanks

Try tr -d '\r'

  • Parsing a csv file with carriage return replaced with #

    Hi,
    We have a weird problem. We are able to download a csv file using standard FM HTTP_GET. We want to parse the file and upload the data into our SAP CRM system. However, the file downloaded, has the carriage return replaced and the character # replaces it and everything seems like its one line.
    I understand that the system replaces the Carriage return with the charater #. My question is, if I try to pass this file into my program to parse for the data, will there be any issues in the system recognizing that "#" that it is a carriage return and that the data in the file is not 1 record but multiple records?

    Hi
    '#' is what you see in the SAP. But the actuall ascii associated will be of carraige return itself. So to identify if you have multiple records of not don't use hard coded '#' but instead use the constant CL_ABAP_CHAR_UTILITIES=>CR_LF.

    I downloaded your html template and it works fine for that template and the xml, but in my case it is not working. I need to assign the template just for one field called "Comments" where I need <<br>> tag to work.
    I modified the html as you suggested with the Tidy software, here is what I have done may be you can help me here. I very much appreciate your help.
    1. I have imported the template with the tag <<?import:file:///C:/dfb/biPub/code/htmlmarkup.xsl?>> and it works fine.
    2. Assigned the xsl - assign-template to the comments field.
    <xsl:apply-templates select="Fact._COMMENTS_" />
    *** IncidentsFact_._COMMENTS is the field name where it has <<br>><</br>> embedded into the comments data.

  • What do you enter for a Carriage Return in Find&Replace?

    I'm using TextEdit to find and replace all instances of a string in an exported .txt with Carriage Returns (CRs). Only, I can't figure what to press in the 'Replace with:' field to tell TextEdit that I want the CR to go in there. Obviously, if I just press Enter, it will just Find then next occurrence of the 'Find' string.
    Any tips?
    What I have been doing as a clumsy work-around is type a CR in the .txt file, and then copy-paste in into the 'Replace with:' field. Only I thought maybe there's a cleverer way of doing it.

    I don't know of a better way to initially set up the Carriage Return in the "Replace with:" field. However once you have done that, you can get it back from the drop-down list associated with that field (it will appear there as a blank line).

  • Carriage returns are replaced by blank space in SOAP message.

    Hi,
    i am using SOAP request based website. i am using the weblogic webservices. when we sent any SOAP request to the server, if the SOAP xml message contains any carriage returns(new lines) are replaced by a single balnk space.
    i have a requirement where user can enter details in multiple lines. but by the time when it readched server, the SOAP xml message has changed. all the carriage returns are repalced by a blank space.
    Can you please help how to solve this issue.
    Thanks
    subba.

    What are your trying to accomplish?
    I'm thinking you are trying to get a several 'fields' together as a single 'string'. In which case I'd simply concat the fields together like
    SELECT a, b||' '||c ...
    to create a single string with "contents of b space contents of c"
    If you are trying to get one hundred and one blanks, of make a field 101 characters wide with blank padding, then you want to look in the SQL Reference manual for things like lpad, rpad and trim.

  • How does one replace carriage returns (enter key) in text areas

    I have an address text area in one of my pages where end users are hitting enter after each part of the address. I want to replace the carriage return hex('0A') with spaces. How can I do that?

    If you're manually saving your data, you can just change your insert/update code as below:
    insert into myTable
    (myCol)
    values
    (replace(:PXX_MY_TEXT_AREA, Chr(10), ' '))
    where ...If you're building a page where you aren't directly saving your data, you can add an "on Submit/Before Computation" process that does something like:
    :PXX_MY_TEXT_AREA := replace(:PXX_MY_TEXT_AREA, Chr(10), ' ');

    neither work, can anyone provide me with some insight into how I can add a carriage return / new line to make my xml file look pretty?

  • Losing carriage returns in textarea / using plpdf to generate report

    Hello,
    I'm using Apex 3.1.1 and Oracle 10g database. I would appreciate any suggestions on how I can preserve carriage returns in a textarea when sending the text to a package that generates a report. Please see example of current problem (below code). I'm using an onkeypress function to check for keycode = 13 when the Enter key is pressed -- that is working. I also created an alert to show the url value -- I can see the text on multiple lines, so that appears to be working as well. The textarea value parameter in the package is defined as varchar2. Per the support folks at plpdf.com, chr(13) indicates an explicit line break, and they told me to check my text. I don't know what I'm missing. Thank you for any suggestions you may have.
    Lisa
      function callPLPDFRep()
          var url;
          url = '#OWNER#.' + $x('P&APP_PAGE_ID._REPORT_PROCEDURE').value + '?' + build_params();
          w = open(url, "winPDFRep", "Scrollbars=1, resizable=1, width=800, height=600");
          if (w.opener == null)
            w.opener = self;
            w.focus();
       function build_params()
        var lparms;
        lparms = '';
        lparms = lparms + '&p_incorrect=' + $x('P212_INCORRECT').value;
        lparms = lparms + '&p_correct=' + $x('P212_CORRECT').value;
        return lparms;
      }Text in textarea:

    035 5768 06/16/2010

    Printout on report:
    035 5768 06/15/2010035 5768 06/16/2010035 5768 06/17/2010

    Hello Michael,
    Thank you for your response. After doing some researching and experimenting, here's what I have found so far.
    First, using an onkeypress function to alert the keycode, a chr(13) is being returned when I press the Enter key in the textarea.
      function check_Enter(e)
        var keynum;
        var textval = $x('P212_INCORRECT').value;
        if(document.all)
          keynum = e.keyCode
        else
          keynum = e.which
        alert(keynum);
      }Next, when I access the value of the textarea via javascript with $x('P212_INCORRECT').value, the chr(13) is automatically converted to the newline character (\n). In an attempt to replace the \n with a \r so plpdf will recognize the carriage return, I added a javascript replace function before sending the text to the package, and it does not work.
      function build_params()
        var lparms;
        lparms = '';
        lparms = lparms + '&p_incorrect=' + $x('P212_INCORRECT').value;
        lparms = lparms + '&p_correct=' + $x('P212_CORRECT').value;
        alert(lparms.split(/\n/g).length - 1);  // confirm that a newline character is found
        lparms = lparms.replace( new RegExp( "\n", "g" ), "\r");  // replace newline character with carriage return
        return lparms;
      }When I tried to replace the newline character (\n) with chr(13), the chr(13) is printed out like it is text instead of a special character. In order to test that I have the correct syntax for the replace function in javascript, I tried replacing \n with '...', and then in the package that generates the PDF, I replaced the '...' with chr(13). That works!
    In response to your comment about the PLPDF procedure for multi line section, I am using: plpdf.PrintMultiLineCell(180, 6, l_incorrect, '0', 0). As a newbie to javascript, I am not sure why replacing \n with \r is not working. Can you advise how to use a chr(13) in the javascript replace function and have it recognized as a special character and not text? I don't know how to view special characters in the textarea other than checking for them with javascript.
    Thanks, Lisa

  • Help needed with Carriage Return in Unicode system

    Hi Experts,
    we have an issue with one of our programs regarding the carriage return that is used when creating a csv file. This issue has only came about because of the recent upgrade to ECC6.
    The main change to the program was the redefinition of the line feed variable.
    Existing statement was --> DATA: v_lf TYPE x VALUE '0D'.
    This was then replaced with
    New statement --> DATA: v_lf type c VALUE cl_abap_char_utilities=>cr_lf.
    Since this change has been implemented, the csv file that is created and sent on as an attachment via the function SO_NEW_DOCUMENT_ATT_SEND_API1 is now not displayed correctly.
    When looking at the attachment in trn SOST, a message is also displayed saying the file is not in a recognizable format when selecting the file to view.
    The hex value for cl_abap_char_utilities=>cr_lf is 000D000A and this seems to be causing the issue.
    I've also tried using Function FI_DME_CHARATERS as I only really want to use the CR. However, the hex value for this is 000D and not 0D.
    Is there any way of converting this to have a hex value of 0D?
    Thanks in advance,
    Chris

  • Reports not retaining carriage returns from htmldb_item.textarea

    I’m created a tabular form for multi row updates using htmldb_item.textarea for one of the fields. When I update the tabular form it keeps any carriage returns in this field, which is good. I then created a “PL/SQL function body returning a SQL Query” report for printing purposes. The problem is that the field populated by the htmldb_item.textarea does not retain any of the carriage returns in the report.
    I enter the following in the textarea on the tabular form:
    Line 1
    Line 2
    Line 3
    The report I created then displays the data as:
    Line 1 Line 2 Line 3
    I need the report to display the data the same as it appears on the tabular form.
    I tried this in my report from reading other similar situations on this forums, but didn’t work.
    replace("TEXTAREA",''||chr(13)||'',''||
    ||'') as title
    Anyone know of a solution?

    How about this?
    Go the page where you can edit the report column attribute - here is the bread crumb to help you figure out what I am talking about
    Home>Application Builder>Application 99999>Page Definition>Report Attributes>Column Attributes
    The second box in this page is Column formatting, you will find 4 text boxes (Number / Date Format, CSS Class, CSS Style, Highlight words) and a text area (HTML Expression). In the text area replace #COLUMN_ALIAS# with <PRE>#COLUMN_ALIAS</PRE>. You will get your newlines without tweaking the query or removing Strip HTML. Strip HTML is a security feature that I would not disable. On the down side you will loose some of the ability to format like fonts etc (:-(,
    Here is why you loose the newlines in the report. When browsers render html they have the liberty to reformat it. When reformating they can play around with whitespaces including new lines. To force a new line you have to use the BR tag or you can say the text is preformated using the PRE tags.

  • Rendering a carriage return

    I have an issue, in which the user can enter text in to a textfield on a dialog box, when closing the dialog the text is saved and displayed in a JTable. The problem I am having is that if the user uses the carriage return to to format their text - a box is displayed for each carriage return. Is there any way to look for those carriage returns in the renderer and not display them?
    thanks
    example:
    "test" is entered by the user followed by 3 carriage returns
    "test[][][]" - is displayed

    A few of the graphical components that explicitly just draws the text, will not paint anything else than the famous square for unprintable characters. Unprintable characters has the value < 32 and 127 and there might be others in the big unicode that I do not know about. Recommended here is to use Character.isLetter() ensure that it is a printable character.
    This does not visualise itself when printed to the console for example, because the shell will interpret the unprintable character to whatever it should be. So \n will become a carriage return and a \g (hmmm... just got a bit unsure if this works in java, anyway printing ascii 7 if \g does not work) would produce a beep.
    Solution:
    Make sure that the component handles the unprintable characters correctly, either by ignoring them or by interpreting them and paint accordingly.
    Hack:
    A few of the components supporting HTML, like JLabel, can become multilined if \n is replaced with HTML and the newlines offcourse are replaced with HTML newlines (<br> or <p> for paragraphs).

  • - How do you refer to an HTML carriage return in PHP?

    Someone sent me a php script that replaces foul language with
    kinder words
    in message board postings. I'd like the same script to weed
    out carriage
    returns, but we can't find the correct syntax for it.
    We're using :
    $patterns[0] = '/\n\r/';
    What's the correct syntax to use in this situation?
    Thanks!

    The response of my know-it-all roumanian programmer with an
    ego the size of
    Texas to that was :
    http://www.regular-expressions.info/characters.html
    (bottom of the page)
    \r\n = windows
    \n = Linux (not Mac)
    \r = Mac
    http://www.regular-expressions.info/optional.html
    (tells you what the '?'
    does)
    (it means that the character before it can be there 0 or 1
    times)
    \r?\n = \n (Linux) or \r\n (windows)
    It leaves out the \r all alone, like added by the Mac.
    So, it will not delete the Mac new lines (might delete the
    Mac OSX ones
    since that one is passed on Linux, but not the older ones.)
    Now, you can contradict me all you want and have a busted
    code (then you
    will say it doesn't work because I made it wrong), or do it
    like I told you
    and get it working like it should.
    To this, I told him I would present this to you for a
    rebuttal, but not
    before asking him why he used only the '/\r?\n/' model as an
    example, and
    not the recommended '/[\n\r]/'. Something tells me he has no
    idea what [
    and ] do in this context, so he's avoiding it altogether --
    even though it
    may very well solve the problem on its own the way you claim
    it does.

  • Carriage return in textarea - how do I check for and remove it???

    I have an html form that has a <textarea> element for user input. I work mainly with Java and some JavaScript. Since carriage returns are permitted in a <textarea> element, upon retrieving the value submitted, my Java and/or JavaScript variables contain carriage returns as well, making the values incomplete.
    For Example :
    String dataSubmitted = request.getParameter("formInput");
    <script language="JavaScript">
    var textValue = "<%=dataSubmitted%>";
    ....//do other stuff
    </script>When I view the source of my JSP page, the above statement of code looks like this:
    var textValue = "This is some text that
    I submitted with a carriage return";I'm putting the text submitted through this form into a mysql database, and when I pull up the values I find that it has recorded the carriage return as well. There is an actual symbol representing a carriage return in the db field.
    What I'd like to do is use some Java code to go through each character of the String and find and remove the carriage return, perhaps replacing it with an empty space instead. But how do I check for a carriage return in a String variable?
    Also, is there a way to use JavaScript to alert the user when the carriage return button is pressed when they're in the <textarea>?
    Any input is appreciated,
    Thank You,

    What I'd like to do is use some Java code to go through
    each character of the String and find and remove the
    carriage return, perhaps replacing it with an empty
    space instead. But how do I check for a carriage return
    in a String variable?The carriage return is represented by the \r. Generally there is also a newline, the \n. You can use String#replaceAll() to replace occurences of them by a space.
    string = string.replaceAll("\r\n", " ");
    Also, is there a way to use JavaScript to alert the user
    when the carriage return button is pressed when they're
    in the <textarea>?You can capture keys using the 'onkeypress' attribute. The keyCode of a the return key is 13. So simply catch that:<textarea onkeypress="if (event.keyCode == 13) alert('You pressed the return button.'); return false;"></textarea>The return false prohibits the linebreak being inserted. If you remove that, then it will be inserted anyway.

  • JSP for Vcard cannot strip carriage return in the last line of the file.

    I am using JSP to output a Vcard (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VCard)
    The following code works great in Windows but fails on the mac:
    <%@ page contentType="text/x-vcard" %><%--
    --%><%@ taglib prefix="c" uri="http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/core" %><%--
    --%><%@ taglib prefix="fn" uri="http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/functions" %><%--
    --%>BEGIN:VCARD
    VERSION:2.1
    <c:choose><%--
    --%><c:when test="${not ((empty param.lan) and (empty param.fin)) }"><%--
    --%>N:${param.lan};${param.fin}
    FN:${param.fin} ${param.lan}
    </c:when><%--
    --%><c:otherwise><%--
    --%>FN:${param.org}
    </c:otherwise><%--
    --%></c:choose><%--
    --%>ORG:${param.org}
    TITLE:${param.title}
    TEL;WORK;VOICE:${param.phwork}
    ADR;WORK:;;${param.st};${param.city};${param.state};${param.zip};
    EMAIL;PREF;INTERNET:${param.email}
    REV:20080424T195243Z
    <c:out value="${fn:replace('END:VCARD','\\\r','')}" escapeXml="false"/>After some tests, I discovered that Mac (I used Tiger, latest update, not Leopard) needs extra white space and carriage returns stripped off. Once this is achieved, the vcard will automatically import into Address Book. I have followed other forums which advice on using JSP comments as in the code above. But for some strange reason the last line of the JSP outputs an extra carraige return. How do I get rid of the carriage return at the end of the file? the replace function from JSTL is not working.
    Edited by: shogo2040 on Dec 18, 2008 7:11 PM : I added more detail to the Subject

    I originally had that END:VCARD without any carriage return.
    But I still get an extra carriage return at the end when the JSP renders to VCF
    I'm using Tomcat running on Linux.
    I found this, article which implies (but does not explicitly say) JSP in general adds a newline to the last line:
    http://www.caucho.com/resin-3.0/jsp/faq.xtp (But its not tomcat either, so maybe this info is irrelevant).
    Edited by: shogo2040 on Dec 22, 2008 3:31 PM - changed rendered to VCF from rendered to JSP
