-Tony,
Quit Mail, find the com.apple.mail.plist file in your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences Folder, drag it to the Desktop, log out/in or restart and try selecting Account. You will have to reset your account preferences.
If you are not satisfied with the results, just return the com.apple.mail.plist file back to the original location.

  • Missing Alias/account drop down menu when composing?

This morning, when using MAIL, the drop-down menu to choose which alias to send an email from seems to be gone. My alias's are all still properly set up and the options is there when using webmail.
I've tried the "customize" section when composing mail (which sets the fleilds shown like "to" "reply to" "BCC", etc) and it's not an option in there either.
I haven't changed any account settings or prefs in Mail in months, and have tried swapping an older plist file in place in case that had something to do with it.
Anyone else having a similar problem? Better yet, anyone have a fix?
    Thanks!
    Tom

Hi. I've got quite the same problem with regular accounts. I've got an IMAP and a POP account and i'm stuck trying to send an email to google groups with my pop-account because mail automaticly uses my imap-account. the google groups of course denies my post since my imap-account is not allowed to post there. In Thunderbird (i just migrated from linux) it automaticly used the account in which the mail arrived to send from and showed a drop down menu just in case. but mail uses my imap account and i see no way to change that behavior (that option with "send from last used account" (i don't know how exactly it translates from german/don't know how it's called in english mail) is active.)
hope to get some help soon.

  • Alias' in account pop-up menu when composing a message

I cannot get my alias' to show up in my account pop-up menu. I have entered them several times in the mail/preferences/accounts/email address with comas inbetween but when I save them, they dissappear. I can no longer send email from my alias' because it does not give them to me in the account menu. How do I get them to stay?

    Hi Hilal.
I don’t know whether this would make a difference, but it may be worth a try:
    1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    2. Make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, just in case something goes wrong while trying to solve the problem. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example. This is where all your mail is stored.
    3. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Preferences/. Locate com.apple.mail.plist and move it to the Desktop (to be deleted if this fixes the problem).
    4. Open Mail. You’ll have to set up your non-.Mac accounts from scratch all over again. If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don’t. Just enter the account information and Mail will automagically rediscover the data in ~/Library/Mail/ when done.
You’ll also have to re-configure most of your settings in Mail > Preferences. For spam-related security reasons, the first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it’s enabled.
    5. As a side effect of re-creating com.apple.mail.plist, Mail might rename Outbox (which is where messages waiting to be sent are stored) to Delivered. The name of that mailbox is actually a misnomer, as it would contain messages (if any) that couldn’t be delivered for some reason. You can delete that mailbox if you wish.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the folder path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the folder path there.

  • Always use the default account when composing new messages box missing in Outlook 2010 after updating the product key.

I have 2 accounts in outlook 2010. 1 is for me and the other I have delegate access to. When I am in the delegates email and want to reply it automatically uses the account the email is in. So if I am in my email, the from is me but if I am in the delegates
email and hit reply the from is them. Now this is not working and I can't figure out how to get it to work. The only thing that changes is that office asked me to activate recently, which is weird since I have had this same computer with the same version of
office for almost a year now. I did a ton of searching and came across an option on the internet: "Always use the deafult account when composing new messages" but this option is not there on my computer. I checked another computer I have with Office
2010 also and the option is available so it must be something to do with the office activation because I haven't done it on this computer yet. PLEASE HELP!!!

Seems this is a hot issue recently, I've post a reply to another thread with the similar topic, please reference that:

  • Selecting account when composing new message

With Mail, is it possible to automatically select the "from" address based upon entering a "to" address? I have a bad habit of composing a new message and sending it without thinking about which account I'm actually sending it from. What I'd like to do is be able to, for instance, enter my friend's name when I'm composing a new message, and based on that, Mail would automatically switch the sending account to my personal email account. When emailing my boss, automatically use my work account, etc.

    Hi jp3,
Unfortunately Mail does not support what you're looking for. If you respond to an email it'll automatically select the appropriate account but not on the creation of a new message. The only "setting" for that is in "composing" where you can choose a default address (or) the account of the selected mailbox. If you go the second option, just make sure you're viewing the appropriate Inbox.

  • Apple Mail locks up when composing new messages

After 10.9.2, I am unable to send mail from my Apple Mail App! I can read, but creating a new message invokes the spinning rainbow icon of death (which stays around for hours if you let it -- I've verified this).
Anybody have any ideas on how to fix or what the cause is?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Problem encrypting email when composing New Message

This may be a bug in Mail app version 4.2 (1078). I am trying to send an encrypted email to a recipient. I already have the recipient's public key in Key Access. If i click on the New Message button and i enter the recipient's email address, the encrypt button is greyed out and i cannot click on it to encrypt the email. However, if i click on the Reply button or if i click on the sender's name and choose the "New Message" option in a digitally signed email sent to me earlier, i can encrypt the email without any problem.
I have tried deleting the recipient's entry in my address book and add it back by clicking on his name and selecting "Add to Address Book" in the digitally signed email sent to me, but still, that did not help.
    Anyone else seen this before?

    Same problem here.
I made sure that both certificates were created with the Data Encipherment option set, but the padlock icon never gets enabled.

  • Default account setting in Outlook 2010 does not work when composing new messages?

    Hello,
I am currently using Outlook 2010 (not beta). I have two accounts, a google imap account and a pop3 account.  I have designated my IMAP account as my default account.  As I understand it, this means that when I create a new email,
it should default to being sent from my IMAP account.  However, whenever I create a new email, it defaults to the account which I am currently viewing in Outlook.  In other words, if I am currently viewing the pop3 inbox, when I compose an email,
it will default send from that account.  Conversely, when I compose an email while viewing the IMAP inbox, it will default send from that account.
Any ideas as to what is going on?  This is rather frustrating because I only rarely send with my pop3 account--only when replying/forwarding email received with that account or other unique situations.  Is there a way to make Outlook be true to
sending from the default account, without doing something drastic like disabling the secondary account?
    Thanks in advance.
    Rom

The behaviour itself may be considered a feature by Microsoft, though I disagree, but the fact that one thinks one is specifying a "default" account that is not then used as the default in all cases is clearly a bug.
It is astonishing to me that in the plethora of options, advanced options and advanced advanced options there is not a checkbox to enable this new behaviour with the default being unchecked.
    Microsoft does it again.

  • Removing a 'bad' previous recipient name when composing 'new message'.

    Hello,
Anyone know how to remove a 'bad' recipient name from the list of previous recipients on the iPhone?
    Thank you.

    Hey Carter,
The only way to remove that cached information in the Mail application is to restore the iPhone and setup as a new phone. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305744
You can request a feature added to the iPhone software online here.

  • Composing new messages using smtp alias doesn't return results

    Greetings,
Our setup: New Exchange 2013 server with an existing 2007 server.  Looking to move mailboxes to 2013.  When testing with iOS and Android devices we found when composing new messages and using an smtp alias and just typing each users initials (which
is a smtp alias of each user plus their regular email address)  no results are coming up when connected to Exchange 2013 mailbox on 2013 CAS server.  It works when using Exchange 2007 CAS.
If we type the user's first name it comes up with the user and smtp address.  However, just typing the 3 letter alias - nothing comes up and we just get "no matches" returned in the messaging app.
I've checked everything I can think of.  Ideas or suggestions?
    Many thanks!

I don't understand what you are saying.
If you uncheck the "Create a sent item to track
information", the sent item is not created. No
    status tracking will take place.
I don't understand what you are looking for.
If the above option is not set, only the received
    items are created.

  • I've a new account on iMac.  When composing an email the contact list does not show up on the bar.  WWhen I start keying in a name, it comes up with the address.  How do I engage the  contact list from the email?

I've a new account on iMac.  When composing an email the contact list does not show up on the bar, which would allow me to select the persons I want to include on the distribution of the email.  When I start keying in a name in the email, it comes up with the person's address, which shows it is synced.  How do I engage the contact list from the email like I do on my old account (where a contact list icon shows up, along with the "attach" and other icons) ?

With the New Message window open, go to the View menu and select "Customize Toolbar...".
In the screen that opens, drag the item labelled "Address" into the Toolbar area of the New Message window, then click the "Done" button.
That item should be then added to the Toolbar for the New Message window.
Note that the main Mail window and the New Message window (as well as the separate message window if you open a message that way) use different toolbars - the settings/inclusions for one do not carry over to another.

  • HT201342 unable to change e mail address to new iCloud address. When following change instructions the drop down on the SEND NEW MESSAGES ON does not have the iCloud option.  ( I have mountain Lion)

attemped instructions in Mountain Lion to change my e mail address to the recommended i cloud.com address.
The drop down  in the SEND NEW MESSAGES FROM does not have the i cloud e mail option.
    How do I change it??

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
In order to change your Apple ID or password for your iCloud account on your iOS device, you need to delete the account from your iOS device first, then add it back using your updated details. (Settings > iCloud, scroll down and hit "Delete Account")
When you delete your account, all the data that is synced with iCloud will also be deleted from the device (but not from iCloud), but will be synced back to your device when you login again.

  • Safari won't provide a drop down menu when I click on paper clip in outlook email. Any help on this would be great.

I am using Microsoft Outlook for work email and Safari won't display a drop down menu when I click on the paper clip for attachments. The IT person at work says the browser isn't working or Safari isn't updated and I should try a different browser.   My other Comcast email is fine. I can attach anything.  Any help would be great.

You could try enabling the Develop menu and try using IE but no guarantees. Not surprising that (Microsoft) Outlook isn't compatible with Apples' Safari.
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Prerferences then select the Advanced tab.
Select:  Show Develop menu in menu bar
Now from the Safari menu bar top of your screen click Develop > User Agent
    Try IE 7, 8, or 9.

In Mail go to the Window Menu and select Previous Recipients. Deleting entries from there won't delete them from your Address Book.
