No Frills - I want it in chapters on a DVD

I want to spend as little time editing some footage as possible. I have approximately an hour long video of a karoake contest. I just want to burn it all to a bunch of DVDs for co-workers. However, I don't want those that went on last to have fast-forward through the whole thing. I just want them to be able to click on a contestant. It doesn't need to be clean or pretty. Just some simple navigation.
I know enough to just follow some quick bullet points. You don't even need to explain anything. All the other movies & DVDs I've made were independent movies... I've never tried to make chapters of a single movie.
Thanks.

And make sure you don't have any clip selected, otherwise you'll get clip markers not chapter markers. Chapter markers are green and will be on the timeline where the playhead indicator is; clip markers are pink and will be on the clip instead of on the timeline.
When you export your movie from FCE, you should UNcheck the option for "Make Movie Self-Contained". As long as FCE and iDVD are on the same computer, you don't need to make your movies self-contained. Exporting will go much faster that way.
In iDVD > Preferences > Movies, make sure your preference is set to Automatically Create Chapter Marker Submenu before you import your movie.

  • Creating DVD Chapters from within DVD studio Pro

    Hey,
Is this possible? Can we create DVD chapters from within DVD Studio Pro?
    Chris

Yes, you can add chapter markers in the DVDSP timeline, although they are not frame accurate as they are in FCP. You'll typically get them within about half a second as they can only sit on a 'GOP' boundary, and these occur roughly every 15 frames equivalent.
To add a marker you move the playhead to where you want it and type the 'm' key, pretty much as in FCP.
The chapter marker then defines the start of a chapter for playback. You can manipulate the navigation such that only one chapter plays before you go back to the menu, or you can start at a marker and continue onwards. You can even create lists of markers that are not in track order and have playback jump about between them, although it's not always wise to do so!

  • Import chapters from our DVD - legally!

We have various DVDs from my daughter's dance studio that the studio wants me to place online at our website - (I should say chapters or dance numbers, not the whole DVD, obviously) so that viewers can sample our dance tech by watching the imovies online.
I can, taking the long way 'round, import the DVD chapters to my video camera and import them to iMovie 6HD, but I have Mac the Ripper, and also MPEG streamclip - both of which work, however, I'm told that I need to get the MPEG-2 playback component from Apple, which I'm willing to do.
What format does iMovie neeed to import video in from this source? I want to import the footage from the DVD (via MacRipper & MPEG Streamclip) create the movie in iMovie, and then upload it to our studio's dot Mac website as I usually do.
Alternatively, what is the best/shortest/easiest way to get certain chapters off our DVDs and make our imovies with them?
    Thanks,
    Rachel.

    concerning mpeg4 as final format:
I made a few "side by side tests" with my QT6pro and iSquint...
using the same (small) bitrate, results of iSquint are by far better, then QT6's mpeg4...! (it uses its own/the ffmpeg algorithms...) esp. titles are crystal clear/no jaggies, or transitions don't show any artifacts....
iSquint has some limitations in size/res, but a web-video shouldn't be full-screen, should it?
so, esp. when crunching video very small, I do recommend export as FullQuality.dv and let iSquint (free) do the job...
audio... mono is for most videos good enough on the web... ;-))

  • Control DVD Player to play specific chapters of inserted DVD?

(this question also posted in Automator discussion)
I would like to create an applescript that will instruct DVD player to play back certain chapters on a DVD. I want to send the script by email to a friend, so she can insert her copy of the DVD (The Yellow Submarine, actually), run my script, and view a "scripted" playback of chapters I've selected.
Even better would be the ability to determine edit points by time rather than chapter.
My applescript skills are weak--I can edit an existing script, but I don't have experience writing from scratch. Thanks very much for your suggestions.

  • I just finished creating a movie in IMovie and now want to burn it to a DVD and make it loop.  Since I just purchased this IMac it no longer comes with IDVD.  My question is how to burn and loop a dvd without IDVD.  Thanks for any help.

I just finished creating a movie using IMovie and want to burn it to a DVD and loop it.  Since I just purchased this mac it looks like they no longer include IDVD.  Is there something out there to help me do this.  I am new to MAC and any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks

There is free open source software called Burn that will burn DVDs. Here is a link.
If you wish to pay for software, there are many, including TOAST TITANIUM from Roxio. Apple's retail copy of iLife 11, and Apple's Compressor.
Of these, I would say that iDVD is known for being able to create very professional looking DVDs with intros, menus, lots of interesting templates.
Toast is much simpler and the menus and templates are more plain.
Compressor is a professional tool that does a lot more than make DVDs. Don't expect much in the way of menus or templates.
Burn, I have never tried, since I have iDVD and Toast for those ocasions when I need to burn a DVD. However, since it is free, I think it is worth a try.
Each software package is a little different, but in general, in iMovie, you can use the SHARE menu to SHARE/MOVIE in Large size. Save the movie to your desktop or someplace you can easily find it. Then drag it into the tool of your choice. You can alsouse SHARE/MEDIA BROWSER/LARGE if you have iDVD or Toast.

    Hi
If there is no iDVD on Your Mac (and it's not on newer Macs as Apple discarded it) then You need a program that can do this.
Your Mac can burn CDs and DVDs - BUT DVD as Data-DVDs not as Video-DVDs - they need a program to be encoded and STRUCTURED as such.
    • iDVD is part of the boxed version of iLife'11 and can only be bought outside Apple as on Amazon and e-bay
    • DVD Studio pro - Part of FinalCut Studio Pro bundle - this to has expired and can only be bought second handed. (High price and tough learning Curve - but best ever done.)
    • Roxio Toast™ - Not as elegant as iDVD - but has many other positive additions (I like it as 10-Pro incl BD-component) (now version 11)
    • Burn - only free alternative I know of on internet. Very simple - Just for doing a plain Video-DVD
    Burn http://www.digital-digest.com/software/Burn.html
only You can buy from Apple is
    • FinalCut Pro-X which also can burn to DVD but without any nice themes.
    AppleMan1958
You can also buy Compressor from Apple for $50 US. It will also create DVD and BluRay but without the nice themes.

    Hi
    Try in iDVD
    • Save as a DiskImage
    • Play this by use of DVD-player tool
    Still OK or problems ?
If OK - Burn it by use of
    • Apple Disk Util tool - or -
    • Roxio Toast™ (if You got this - I love it)

    Hi,
Unfortunately you can create only 1 set of recovery media.
Copying and burning the recovery USB to DVD and then using DVD to do system recovery will not work.
What you can do is back up all your data to an external drive. Do a Factory Reset with the Recovery USB to get back all the partitions including the recovery partition into the HDD.

    Hi
Do You mean miniDV tape (interlaced video PAL or NTSC) ?
If so - iMovie'08 or 09 or 11 - are not tools of Choise if You want a DVD as result - They all discards every second line resulting in less quality.
Sync. Problem - If miniDV tape - How was it recorded -
Audio mode - Is Camera set to record in 12-bit 32kHz - Should be 16-bit 48kHz
Recording mode - SP (60 min on a 60 min tape) or LP (90 min on 60 min tape)
If LP-mode - Then You need - Same Camera as recorded - tolerances is to small even for a Camera of same brand and type to play-back.
I would use FinalCut Express and a setting of PAL/N TSC and 32kHz audio if Camera is set to record in 12-bit
If LP-mode - iMovie HD6 is more tolerant in Captuing than FinalCut and Imediatly after Import/Capture - Extract Audio
And set iM HD6 to NOT IMPORT AS INDIVIDUAL Clips - to many drop outs to work.

  • I want to password protect an external dvd. I try using disc utility, but it won't format with encryption as it claims in the Help instructions. I am using Lion. Any ideas?

Using Disk Utility, I select the disc image that contains the data that I want to backup to a DVD and select Burn. The program asks that a blank DVD be inserted.  When I do that, no format pop-up appears as is indicated in the Help instuctions.  If I procede with the burn, there is no password protection.  Before I converted to Lion, I used to use Disk Utility to burn backup DVDs without any problems.

AFAIK, you create an encrypted disk image and burn that to DVD. There's nothing else to do, but I might be mistaken.

  • I've taken videos with my ipad and want to put them on a dvd and give them to my friend in another state. and I want him to be able to play them in his television using his dvd player..

I've taken videos on my ipad and my iphone and want to put them on a dvd disc, send the disc to my friend in another state so he can play it on his video player on his tv......thanks...............Mrpix

Get the files onto your computer.
I use the method of using windows explorer. Click on your iPad then drill down through the folders, find your video and drag it onto your computer.
You can then use a program like Roxio to convert those files into a DVD that can be played on a set top player.

    please advise!

    Buy iDVD.
Yes, there are other programs that will put a movie on a DVD.   I have tried most of the substitutes.  None of them come anywhere near the ease-of-use and power of iDVD.
    http://www.apple.com/findouthow/movies/idvd.html
With iDVD you can easily and quickly create DVDs with menus and graphics almost on the level of what Hollywood can do.
IDVD is easy to get. It is available on disk as part of iLife 11.
IDVD is a wonderful piece of software and well worth the low cost of $40.  (works with all Mac OS 10.5 and newer.)

    Hi
Please describe How You go from PPT to iDVD. Via iMovie ?
If so - then convert Your .wma file to .aiff (same kHz) and use this in iMovie instead. (no .mp3 either)

I am running OSX 10.6.8 and I want to copy a home made DVD to my external hard drive...how do I do this?

If you want to back it up there, use the Disk Utility to create a disk image of it.
If you want to import its contents to iMovie, iTunes, or elsewhere, use MPEG Streamclip and Apple's MPEG-2 playback component to convert the VOB files on it to a different format.
