No Sleep while Speakable Items is on

I am using OS 10.4.3 and my iMac won't automatically go to sleep when Speakable Items is turned on. (I have "Press to Listen" turned on so it only listens when the ESC key is pressed.)
I just verified it this morning: I turned off Speakable Items and after 20 minutes my iMac was sleeping (pulsing LED). I turned Speakable Items -on- and after 30 minutes, my iMac was not sleeping (screen dark but solid LED).
I don't recall having this problem before. I was having problems sleeping (well, not me.., my Mac) but that had to do with RadioShark, but I removed the RadioShark v.1 software, installed RadioShark SW v2 and the computer sleeps again, except when speakable items is on...
Anyone experiencing this problem?

Get an external mic. Apple PlainTalk Microphone works best w/G3 iMacs.
If I were you, I would shop around for a cheaper price. I only paid $5 for mine back in 1999 w/my Apple coupon. I think the actual price was around $10.
Speakable Items works best w/external mics. The external mics will handle your "Very South Yorkshire" accent w/no problem.

  • Speakable Items and Sleep Warning

If you like to talk to you computer, be careful with Speakable Items. Once Speakable Items is on in Snow Leopard, a single spoken command successfully received turns off screen saver/sleep preferences. From that point it is necessary to manually start any screen saver and/or sleep.

  • Mountain Lion and Speakable Items

Now that I got Speakable Items up and running albeit with a number of bugs (the listening key deactivates that key's normal function- if you use Escape for instance, escape will no longer function in apps, if you use F5 however, you cannot Calibrate as it goes on beeping when you try- has some wrinkles in other words), I'd like to try it with fave applications.
The first one I'm interested in is Safari, but sadly the only command available is 'Make this page speakable'. You can then input things from there, but you're limited to one page. I want the whole application to be speakable- that is, so I can say any of the commands in the menu bar. I know you can make them in Applescript (or Automator I suppose), but I don't know how to do that. If someone knows where I can get batches of them, I'd appreciate it.
Safari is the only application that even has a folder dedicated it under the Applications group. There Global and Menu Bar workarounds- for instance I can say "Window Menu" and the window menu will pop down. Then if I say "Show Next Tab" it works. But if I don't say "Window Menu" first, nothing happens. Obviously, Ctl-Tab/Ctl-Shift-Tab is a lot easier.
You can work around the key bug by assigning a vocal cue- "computer" for example (they use that in Star Trek too so the computer doesn't get confused), but I can't seem to get it to work on my cheapo mic.
I'm experimenting on ML, on my Mac Mini with a USB mic. Haven't tried it on my MBP Mavericks yet.

I've also noticed that Speakable Items works for an indeterminate period of time, and then just dies out. The time usually isn't too long, and perhaps the kapoot occurs after sleep. Anyway, I tried turning it off and on, changing the input key, but nothing works save restarting (logging out should work too). I'd like to know a faster way to quick start it if anyone knows one. Force quitting System Preferences doesn't help either.
Needless to say, Speakable Items is GREAT idea but why so many bugs? I think it worked much better in Tiger or way back when. In fact, if I'm not mistaken the technology (at least in Mac OS as it's not new) began in OS 8. I would love to tell my computer what to do like in the sci fi flicks and give my fingers a break. I notice in Star Trek they don't type anything at all- just push icons (very quickly!). In the Matrix they slide around holographic artifacts in Tai Qi style.
Well I digress. i think it would be great if voice recognition were beefed up all around. I would like talking to my devices- friendlier!

Is there a way to leave Speakable Items on and have it go to sleep?

    Hi Chacham,
This is a bug that arose in Leopard, persisited through Snow Leopard and Lion, and still persists in Mountain Lion.  After you start your computer with Speakable Items active, it will obey your Sreensaver and Energy Saver preferences only until you give your first spoken command.  After that first spoken command, your computer will no longer obey the Screensaver and Energy Saver preferences you have set.  I discussed this with Apple Technical Support back when I was using Snow Leopard and they had no solution.  In fact they reproduced the problem on their own machines.
Hey Apple software engineers, why can we not talk to our Macs without clobbering our Sreensaver and Energy Saver preferences?  This has gone on far too long.
    Ted.

  • Speakable items is giving me trouble

    hello there,
I wonder if someone can help me. I want to use speakable items while i'm doing other stuff in front of my mac (reading, referance etc.) and it doesn't like the way I speak.
I have a strong regional accent (Very South Yorkshire) and I tried speaking more clearly, turning up the microhone, and all it likes to respond to is 'what time is it?' and 'tell me joke' (gets no further than that as it doesn't understand me)
If anyone can help I'd be much obliged,
    Thanks in advance

  • 10.8.4 Speakable Items

I think this started when i upgraded to 10.8.4. Si is set up as instructed and responded to all commands. It then became unresponsive ie: the microphone no longer shows that its "listening". I have checked all settings related to speech and sound to no avail. I read somwhere on the web that a restart will sort it. Restart and "listening" becomes active again and commands are accepted... for a while then becomes inactive again. This also affects sound on Notification banners and alerts.... no sound, on restart..all ok for a while then inactive.
Whilst typing this  now, suddenly without having to restart both Speakable Items and Notification started working.
    Any ideas People??

  • Speakable Items - speech recognition

I just recently saw a demo about 'speakable items' and the different speech recognition programs built into Leopard -- Amazing!
However I am wondering how you create a new speakable item, I know there is a 'make this page speakable' command, but it doesn't seem to work or I am not exactly sure how to use it properly. For example I want to make an 'Open Gmail' command, how do I go about adding things like that??
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

I just tried the same thing you did. The file it created is IN the speakable items folder, but it's still not doing it. Maybe my intonation isn't right. AHA, that's it We say Geemail but I'm betting you typed it Gmail which is more like "Gumail". Go into that folder, rename that icon (Geemail, Jeemail, or G mail) and see if it works.
While I was researching this, I did find this page you might like.

  • Using speakable items in WoW

After reading an article in WoWinsider I have begun to use speakable commands in World of Warcraft. It is quite fun to handle the character with your voice.
However I have a question. I have bind some keystrokes to voice command. They are global speakable items and work in any program. I would like to have them only available in the game.
    - Can I use "Application specific items"? and how do I create my voice commands?
There are a number of applications in the Speakable items folder. Can I add an application. Can I just create a folder, call it World of Warcraft and move my speakable items to this folder?

Yes, you can. Here's an example that I have just created in WOW for displaying the World Map.
Step 1: While in WOW, issue the vocal command "Define a keyboard command."
Step 2: Type M for the keystroke (Default M is mapped to World Map)
Step 3: Type "World Map" as the phrase to say
Step 4: Select the of option to apply to World of Warcraft only.
    Step 5: Save
    Step 6: Use Command
    Enjoy.

  • Where is Speakable Items now?

I have a lot of items that I've used since forever in Speech but when I checked for Speech Startup in my Login Items it says that it can't be found.
Has this functionality been converted somehow?

The traditional speakable items found prior to Yosemite, is now configured differently.
The logindir/Library/Speech/Speakable Items/ folder is empty on YosemiteAdd previous AppleScripts in the above folder
System Preferences > Accessibility > Dictation
    Click Dictation Commands button
    Click Enable Advanced Commands
Click + symbol to add your command
Fill in content on the right.
When I say: - keep it simple, remember Dictation has to figure out what you are saying
While using: - Choose the default (shown) or be specific
Perform: Pick the location and name of your AppleScript
    Click Done.
Example: Recite my current battery percentage and remaining charge time (custom AppleScript).
System Preferences > Dictation & SpeechDictation On
    Optional: Use enhanced dictation
Make certain audio is working on the Finder Menubar
Where appropriate, press your Dictation activation key (default: fn fn)
Speak clearly and slowly, the “When I say” words for the command you want recited
If the script has no errors, you will hear the result.
In the Finder, when I press fn fn, the dictation monitor appears. I say, “Battery Charge” and my MacBook Air then speaks:
“Currently on battery power with 80 percent charge, and 7 hours and 24 minutes remaining.”

my macbook is going to sleep while I'm working or viewing something. I will sometimes have to open and close it several times to get it to "wake up" again. Also, no sound comes out of my Macbook. I only hear with earbuds or headphones. Any suggestions?

If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out these instructions.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:
syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CSeq "Previous Shutdown" | tail | open -f -a TextEdit
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Post the contents of that window, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.

  • Error while Editing Item - After importing pagegroup

    Hi All,
We have Oracle Application server 10g (10.1.2) with Oracle Portal 10.1.2.0.0. as a test environment in win 2000 server.
We installed a new Oracle Application server 10g (10.1.2) (production) with 10.1.2.0.2 in Suse Linux Enterprise server 9. every thing was fine.
We have migrated one simple page group from source(win) to a new Portal in Linux ( by following the steps of Portal export / import Doc.). This is by exporting transport set, dmp file in source side and importing dmp file and transport set on the target. The import was successful. I checked the Navigator and found the imported page Group. Also all the sub pages and items have been found with proper regions.
But when i'm trying to edit any item, region or adding region, item, it shows the following error. -----------------------

  • Error Message while adding Item in Item Master Data- [Microsoft][SQL Server Native Client 10.0][SQL Server]Conversion failed when converting the nvarchar value 's008 01' to data type int. (CINF)

    Hi Rathna,
Just put the SP like this, without the -- before the IF. A -- marks the line as a command therefore you need to uncomment and it will work.
    IF @OBJECT_TYPE = '59' AND (@TRANSACTION_TYPE = 'A' or @TRANSACTION_TYPE = 'U')
      BEGIN
       IF EXISTS(
        SELECT T0.Price FROM IGN1 T0

       BEGIN

      END
    end

  • Error while receiving Item using MB1C.

I get the following error message while receiving Item using T-Code MB1C.
Accounting Data not yet maintained for Material NPPL 2707.
Not sure which setup is missing. Can somebody please help?

    Dear Nitesh Patil,
After we do a posting, the changes need to be reflected in FI and since your material master does not contain the accounting 1 and accounting 2 views you are getting this problem.
To rectify, go to MM01 > give the same material name for which you are getting this problem > select accounting 1 and 2 views and fill up the required data.
    Hope this helps.

  • Speakable Items won't work with my headset

    Here's the deal:
When I am using the internal microphone with Speakable Items, everything works fine. (I have to lean in a bit, obviously.) But no matter what I do, my computer won't understand commands spoken through my bluetooth headset. My OS is up-to-date (10.4.10).
The headset (Plantronics Voyager 510) pairs fine with my computer, an iMac G5, and appears to work perfectly well as an input device: the readout in the Sound preference pane shows that the computer can hear my voice through it. In fact, when I go to the "Speakable Items" tab in the Speech preference pane, choose the headset (which appears as "PLT 510"), and attempt to calibrate it, the blue, green, and red readout in the Microphone Calibration window also registers my voice.
But no matter where I set the slider, no matter where I am in relation to the headset microphone, and no matter at what volume or speed I speak, the computer will not recognize commands. It can hear my voice — which I keep in the green zone — but won't understand it.
It's not just in the calibration window: it also won't work when trying to use Speakable Items in, say, the Finder. I've tried changing the input volume for the headset in the Sound preferences, having my room totally silent (including shutting off the air conditioner), calibrating with Speakable Items set to "on" and "off," and weeping and begging. I even rebooted. Nada.
Again, Speakable Items works fine when I am using the internal microphone. The one other difference I found in their behaviors is that, with the calibration slider set to low and the room silent, the internal microphone is steady at the second green bar; but the headset under the same conditions is steady at the sixth bar. In fact, in the case of the headset, moving the slider has no effect at all: it always rests on the sixth bar.
(In other news, the headset won't pair with my iBook G3 [Dual-USB] using the D-Link DBT-120 [Rev. B3]. But I guess that's a different issue altogether.)
Googling, I see plenty of happy Mac users who own my model of headset, but I can't find this problem addressed anywhere. I've looked through the forums here as well.
Thanks for reading! Can anyone help?

Sorry for the slow reply, Philip!
First of all, Macs do not yet interact in stereo with Bluetooth headsets, though according to rumour this will be available in Leopard (along with everything else).
Have you tried using the Skype Test Call feature? This is one of the easiest ways of listening back to what you record. Come to that, does it record into one of the more standard sound apps (e.g. Garage Band, Audacity, SndSampler)?
My wife has a Plantronics 590 Bluetooth headset, but when it is interacting directly via the Mac's Bluetooth she can only get the microphone to work with Skype and the Finder. And iTunes outputs only the left-hand channel, evenly split between the two channels, and the quality is horrible. If she wants to use it for any other purpose she has to connect it via the Bluetooth 3.5 mm jack adapter plugged into the headphone socket, which cuts out the headset mike as well as the internal speakers.
Though VoiceOver does work through her headset, without using the adapter, the quality is awful and VoiceOver keeps crashing. She can, however, use it for Speakable Items, though she often has to repeat herself. The calibration had to be set very high — 100% mostly.
Have you gone through the full calibration sequence, including getting all the test commands to flash?
    Keep us posted!
    Archie
