Non-terminating Java process?

Hi,
I have a very memory intensive Java process. The heap grows to somewhere between 1GB and 1.2GB. Basically, when I use the -Xmx1000M option I get the java.lang.OutOfMemory Error but when I use -Xmx1200M then it runs to completion.
When I use the option -Xmx1100M then my program doesn't give me the out of memory error but it also never finishes. I am wondering if there is some weird state that it is sitting in, like maybe there is just enough memory to load the garbage collector, but not enough to have it do anything.
See, when I give my process the -Xmx1200M option it runs in a few hours, less than 2 hours for sure. But with the -Xmx1100M option it will stay alive for 12 hours or more but never finish.

When the heap limit is met, a full gc is run. Ifthat
doesn't free enough memory, then anOutOfMemoryError
is thrown.
As for the extremely long runtime given -Xmx1100M,
I'm thinking it's sort of pinging off its ceiling,so
to speak, and running full gc's very often.Thank you. That is the type of answer I was hoping
to get.
So from what you said and the fact that my program
fails at 1GB of heap but suceeds at 1.2 GB, I infer
the following: the heap size that my program requires
is around 1100 MB. When it gets close to that,
garbage collection will run but will only free enough
to do "a little bit" of work, like create the next
few objects, then GC needs to run again, etc.
Basically, hardly any memory is getting freed by GC,
, but just enough is so my program can run a tiny bit
before GC is required to run again.
Does that sound about right?That works.

    I believe that this will have to be accomplished using a Solaris or UNIX specific device.
    The question is how I can call a process and tell it that it is running in a terminal.
    For example "prstat -a" will adjust to fit the size of the window as well as respond to my keystrokes.
    If I call it using a java process it will not do either of those two things because it detects that it it not in a terminal.
    Is there a process or middleman I can call to create a terminal? Or do I have to write my own middleman in C/C++? (I would really prefer a middleman that is already part of Solaris)

    I have no idea if it's useful, but this page says it's an implementation of Expect in java. Any implementation is either going to have to open ptys directly, or it's going to have to re-implement their functionality. You might be able to examine the code and see it's accomplishing that.

    That code uses the standard exec function. It does not actually create a terminal (although it still uses a shell). It is similar to running "sh | cat" on your own terminal.

    prstat was an example. I am not looking for a C method to detect a terminal as much as one to create a terminal. If there is something I am missing, please elaborate

    i need to write a program that checks if a non-java process is still running (under windows) and to run a system command if it is not. Is there a way to check what process are still running?

    You will have to make use of native methods for that. Or use something with Runtime.exec();

  • SSO to non-SAP java running on Websphere

    I have an EP6 SP2 P5 and another java b2b app running on websphere app server and they are on different domains. I'm trying to figure out how to make sso to that app. There is  a guide on SDN written by Tim Mullé, Stephan Boecker "Enabling Single Sign-On from SAP J2EE Engine/EP to Non-SAP Java Applications" . I'm wondering if can make it work if I follow that guide and also the cross domain integration guide for sending cookies across domains?

    The process described in the cross-domain document will be necessary in order to get the MYSAPSSO2 cookies to your non-SAP application. You cannot get your browser to send domain1.com cookies to a domain2.com server. Therefro it is necessary to provide an alternate pathway - in this case using http POST. Then the target of the POST on domain2 can handle the data and return a cookie in its own domain. At that point you can either create your own cookie for websphere to use, or you can simply re-issue the cookie in domain2.com. SAP provides some libraries that will enable the other application to validate the cookie.

  • RFC execution process terminates the Java Process

    Hi All,
      we have a RFC which returns large data with export parameter. While executing JCO.client.execute(), java process is getting terminated. I tried to set the more heap size but of no use. It didn't give any OutOfMemory either.
    The JCO trace file at level 10 shows as below which clearly indicates that something is going wrong at JNI layer of JCO.
    The problem seems to be with allocation of heap size in 'C' layer of JCO.<b>The trace file has below last entries</b>

  • Signal ILL trying to debug java process with dbx

    I'm trying to debug a java process to find an error in JNI code. I get this message when dbx stops in a C breakpoint:

    I've tried to find out unsuccessfully whether my dbx version is compatible with my Java version, but it seems this could be the problem.

  • Why java process crashes frequently

    We are facing an issue with our Oracle CMS server which is a java process. Content server instance is going down again and again within 5 minutes. We don't see any entries in the content server log files. However there is a crash dump of the java process that we get. I am attaching log entries here.     Looks like Stellent comes with the JRE built in, judging from the stuff in the shared-libs. This smells like a HotSpot bug - you might dig around in the Sun bug database and see if there's anything similar there. In any event, the advice to work with oracle/Stellent is sound, since everything in that log points at something either in Stellent or in the Sun JRE itself.

  • Invoking SSL via a Java process..

    Hi All,
    I am trying to use Weblogic 5.1 with SSL. I have the SSL working in
    weblogic through a browser. That is, I have been able to successfully
    do the folllowing:
    ~ weblogic.security.key.server=www_mysite_com-key.der
    ~ weblogic.security.certificate.server=MyCert.pem
    ~ weblogic.security.certificate.authority=getcacert.cer
    Hence my browser clients are now presented with a login-box and are
    able to run through https://localhost:7002/
    But my querry is --
    ~ I start weblogic in one window
    ~ and now, how do I run a java-client (distributor.cmd) which runs
    as another batch script, to use SSL ?
    Do I need to write some programs which will use "HttpsURLConnection
    class" to route the above distributor.cmd through https:// or through
    t3s:// ?
    Any pointers would be welcome..

    The front-end is non-graphical. We generate our beans and descriptors from
    our own file format, so we want a complete compiler that takes it from
    our format->deployable beans.

  • Handling .class files insite java process

    Hello folks
    I have a question regarding JVMPI and JVM: I have created a small proff-of-concept program that handles JVMPI_EVENT_CLASS_LOAD_HOOK and JVMPI_EVENT_CLASS_LOAD events. After my class (simple Test.java with System.out.println) has beed loaded (*CLASSLOAD_HOOK event) I remembered pointer and size of .class file in memory of java process. Then, after CLASSLOAD event I filled this memory with zeroes (memset) to see if Test.class will execute normally. And it did worked fine. My question is: does java process need this memory after JVMPI_EVENT_CLASS_LOAD event? Can I safely override .class file data?

    At some point, the JVM writes the contents of the
    class file into memory that's accessible via coredump.
    Otherwise it couldn't execute the bytecodes. If you
    zero out the memory where the physical .class file was
    loaded, it won't affect the memory where the actual
    class is stored.you are wrong :-) I did some testing and I caught three events:
    - LOADHOOK where I remembered pointer to .class file and size of it
    - _LOAD where I zeroed this memory
    - JVMSHUT_DOWN where I caused SIGSEGV to force coredump.
    I tested two cases: with and without clearing memory and then searched two different core-files for content of *.class file. I only found it in core dumped in a situation when I did not use memset to clear memory. It is because (as I assume) java process after loading .class file makes some optimisations to efficiently execute bytecode so representation of my code exists in memory of proces but in unreadable, undocummented and undecompilable (at least for non jvm developers) format which is characteristic to particular JVM implementation
    Someone who wants your code badly enough is going to
    get it.sure but I try to make him this task as difficult as I can ;)

    Hi Sunny,
    You are correct,but we have a different strategy.
    We will have CI as SPOF and no CI with DI as non SPOF on two nodes.
    CI will be a part of cluster in compensation to the CI and DI as non-clustered on seperate nodes.
    I am yet stuck on 27 th phase of CI installation.
    I do not think that can be a cause of the error as we have gone through the phase of installing /confguring Java Engine and installing S/WUnits prior to this 27 th phasei.e  "Prepeare to install minimal configuration"  .
    Anyways CI can always be a part of cluster as and HA option too.

    Second the problem:
    Each time I try to kill a java process ( by sending the command Ctrl+C) I see the message Stopping in the status bar, the console output is 'frozen' and nothing happens until the java process stops or I kill it from Task Manager. Is there an workaround

  • Single SOA Suite Install with multiple oc4j instances and java processes

    We right now have 5 BPEL processes and 5 ESB processes all running under one java.exe process. We would like to seperate some of
    them out into their own java.exe processes without having to install more
    %ORACLE_HOME% instances of SOA Suite. I can create an oc4j instance but of
    course it doesn't have any SOA Suite stuff deployed to it. I tried to see what
    the install would do with this new oc4j instance but it wants to create a new
    %ORACLE_HOME% with an entire installation of SOA Suite.
    Is there some sort of way to clone oc4j instances that have SOA Suite deployed to them so that you
    don't need multiple %ORACLE_HOME% instances?

    We really don't want to have a lot of %ORACLE_HOME% instances to have to maintain. We are
    migrating projects over from our current integration server product and we'll
    have potentially dozens more BPEL and ESB projects. We definitely want to
    group and isolate projects so that outages of one project do not bring down
    others that are unrelated.
    We are currently experiencing periodic problems with one BPEL project that requires recycling but all the other BPEL and ESB
    projects get recycled also. If we could put this project into it's own java
    process without creating another SOA SUITE instance, it would be a big
    help.

    Right now, the one BPEL project we have a problem with will gobble up all the JDBC connections from time to time and that requires a recycle of SOA Suite, which means all BPEL and ESB projects that run in that java.exe process get recycled also. We're working that issue in a different ticket.
    It would be nice if the SOA Suite installation would install against a new oc4j instance and not assume it has to create a complete %ORACLE_HOME% instance. The components of SOA Suite seem to be J2EE based components.
    Scenario: I already have an oc4j instance called oc4j_soa and a complete %ORACLE_HOME% installation of soa suite. I then create a new oc4j instance from Enterprise Manager. Then I would deploy the esb-dt, esb-rt, orabpel, etc. components of SOA Suite to that new oc4j instance and modify the necessary config file so that it can work with OHS and the SOA Suite Databases. Is this possible?
    Does anyone have any experience with this or do people typically install multiple complete installation of SOA Suite with mulitple Oracle Homes?

    yes, on metalink you get in touch with real experts....
    You have to install serveral application servers to get different ORACLE_HOMEs.
    For each one, you can install a BPEL PM.
    But: For each BPEL PM you need your own database instance, or you have to configure them as a clustered BPEL installation.... (but i do not know if this work with non RAC DBs)

    i'm upgrading Solman from SP04 to SP13 using SUM (SP12 patch 10) on windows 2012
    and i faced  error  during  Excution phase 5.6  in JAVA Stack.

  • Any tips on Controlling interactive bash shell on Cygwin via Java process?

    Ideally, I'd like to be able to control an interactive bash shell on Cygwin from a Java process. But for starters, I want to do 'ls > /cygdrive/c/fred.txt'. The little program to do this, below, doesn't work. It simply runs without error.
    Any ideas? And also, any tips on doing a fully interactive shell?

    What do you mean by this? Do you just want to start a bash shell, and have it's input and output come from and go to your Java program?
    Please be specific about what you want, as there are a couple of interpretations for what you said. You need to understand the differences and relationships among terminals, shells, shell builtins, and executables.

    , <, |, and others are specific to the shell. When you're in a terminal, and you type ls > /tmp/zzz, it's the bash shell that interprets the >. Cygwin doesn't know anything about it. ls doesn't know anything about it.So if you want to to that, the command you'd execute from Java is not ls, but bash (or some other shell). You'd then tell bash to execute the rest. I'm not sure what the command line arg is for bash to tell it the rest of the command line args are a command that bash should interpret and execute. I think it might be -c like it is for zsh. So you'd need to do something like Runtie.getRuntime().exec("bash -c 'ls > /tmp/zzz'");
