NotSerializableException on Entity Bean Client

Am new to entity beans, specifically Bean-Managed Persistent Entity Beans. I am trying to return a DTO back from the business method of entity bean. In short the code in bean is this

java.rmi.MarshalException: error marshalling return; nested exception is: java.io.NotSerializableException:com.tpt.practice.entityBeans.bmp.EmployeeDetailsDTO
Note: The EmployeeDetailsDTO does implement the Serializable interface. Any other reason why i should get this error?
Is it possible that a field on the DTO is throwing the Serializable Exception? ..is serialVersionUID manually declared? Perhaps that would help?

Client Program accessing J2EE entity Bean
I have trouble find my Course J2EE bean from a client. (The client
runs on the same computer but a different VM from the bean.)

java.sql.BatchUpdateException: Data exception -- row already exist in index PK_MYTABLE on table MYTABLE.
From the exception it seems like its doing a batch insert. So that seems to explain why the java.sql.BatchUpdateException is thrown few milliseconds after my call to myTableHome.create(...);
Is it possible to disable batch update / insert? how?

I have tried an entity bean application. I am able to deploy my entity bean in WebLogic 7.0 server. But when I ran the client program I am getting the following error.

}What are the System Properties? Are you running the client remotely? Are you running the client as a stand alone Java app or using the Weblogic's Client Runner? 'java:comp' as the jndi name is usually used when the client runs inside the container... But it doesn't seem to be the case.

Entity beans storing client callbacks...how?
Ok, here's my situation. Multiple clients might be modifying the same entity bean so I have implemented client callbacks. A client registers a callback with the bean, and the bean will call it back when someone modifies the beans data.
Now my question is entity beans can be removed by the container for various reasons, so how can I have the bean save the callback so when the container reloads the bean it reloads the callbacks? How do you store a callback to a database?

How do you register a client as a callback? Anything "sent" to the EntityBean is serialized. That means when the EntityBean receives the information, it is not the same instance as your client class. Ergo, the "callback" method would operate only on the local instance the EntityBean has at the time, not the one on your client side.
Now, as for the differences of "state." Yes, the EntityBean persists state as represented by the persistence store (e.g. a row in a table in database). However, in order to register an Object as you would for a callback, then the EntityBean must maintain a reference to that Object - which it can't because the only information that an EntityBean can maintain is that of the persistent store. Only static final Objects are allowed (ones that cannot change during the lifetime of an instance of the EntityBean). Even if you managed to circumvent this restriction, then you have to figure out how all of the EntityBeans would have exactly the same Object references for the callback objects.
The only way to do what you want is to make it a "non-reference" type of relationship. Which means some sort of message-based system. If you use a JMS Topic, you can get a "broadcast" type of notification out to all your clients and, while there is a bit of a performance trade-off, it's a solution that will work.
Finally, if there's "tons of data," you might want to go back and look at your Use Case(s) and determine if you really should be using EntityBeans anyway. EntityBeans are great stuff - when used in the right situations. -
Container Managed Entity Beans and Client Identifier in Oracle
Is it possible to use Container Managed Entity Beans (EJB with CMP)
in a way that the Oracle database sessions still know the
individual Client Identifiers of the actual users
(not just the Identifier of the proxy user defined in the
Connection Pool)?
If Yes: How?
If No: The consequence would be that the
technologies EJB with CMP cannot be user together with
Oracle Virtual Private Databases (VPN) because VPN requires
some kind of Client Identifier.

Generating Primary Key Values
For some entity beans, the value of a primary key has a meaning for the business entity. For example, in an entity bean that represents a phone call to a support center, the primary key might include a time stamp that indicates when the call was received. But for other beans, the key's value is arbitrary--provided that it's unique. With container-managed persistence, these key values can be generated automatically by the EJB container. To take advantage of this feature, an entity bean must meet these requirements:
* In the deployment descriptor, the primary key class is defined as a java.lang.Object. The primary key field is not specified.
* In the home interface, the argument of the findByPrimaryKey method must be a java.lang.Object.
* In the entity bean class, the return type of the ejbCreate method must be a java.lang.Object.
In these entity beans, the primary key values are in an internal field that only the EJB container can access. You cannot associate the primary key with a persistent field or any other instance variable. However, you can fetch the bean's primary key by invoking the getPrimaryKey method, and you can locate the bean by invoking its findByPrimaryKey method.

60 Second Delays in Client Getting Entity Bean (after finder method)
I am running WLS5.1 with SP10. I have a stateless EJB that gets a
read-write BMP entity EJB. My test client that executes the stateless
session bean periodically encounters long delays (60 seconds or more)
when acquiring the entity bean using its finder method. Logging shows
the finder method is executing properly, and typically takes 180 ms to
locate the entity bean; however, from the stateless session beans side,
it appears to take 60 seconds. The test client is only a single thread,
so I know the pool is not depleted, or anything like that. Something
appears to be going haywire with the container.
Does anybody have an idea what might be going on?

On a whim, I tried the same test with the thin driver, and the same
delay occurred. This time, instead of a rollback being at the top ofthe
thread dump stack trace, it was in some other Oracle call, with the
top of the stack trace being a socketreader.are you using MTS? Is the db-server a SMP-box? Which exact patch level
does your Oracle instance have? If yes, can you try to force a dedicated
server connection and see if the problem disappears? I guess for an OCI
connection you will have to edit tnsnames.ora, for a
thin-driver-connection you would have to modify the connect string to
something like this:

There is a bug in 8.1.6.0 which is supposed to be fixed in 8.1.6.3, but
I can still reproduce it in 9i :-(. It makes the MTS-dispatcher hang for
60 seconds if you have an SMP box with low load, so maybe this could be
your problem.

My client has been using OCI in production and development
with JTS for
over a year now without a problem. We went to OCI because
there was some
other problem with the thin driver. I'm not sure what the
problem was,
but Oracle acknowledged it, but said it wouldn't be corrected until
Oracle 9i came out. We're still using 8.1.6, so from what I'm
told, we
don't use the thin driver.
On a whim, I tried the same test with the thin driver, and the same
delay occurred. This time, instead of a rollback being at the
top of the
thread dump stack trace, it was in some other Oracle call, with the
top of the stack trace being a socketreader.
Somebody else suggested that there may be a problem with
transactions.
Does this ring a bell? Again, I have a stateless session bean
invoking a
read-write entity bean, invoking a read-only entity bean. From
everything I read, including weblogic docs, I should just rely on my
deployment descriptor to control transactions and stay away from JTA.

when the connections were opened but never used...
Buy the way, are there any specific reasons to use OCI instead of
thin driver?

latest OCI
driver; thanks for the suggestion. I tried tweaking some of the Solaris
kernel settings as relates to TCP, but that didn't clear up the problem
either; however, it did change the frequency. Modifying the retransmit
settings (very small values, sub 1.5 seconds) seemed to make it occur
less frequently.
It seems like its time for me to contact BEA Support and see what they
can turn up. Thanks for the suggestions. If anybody else has an idea,
let me know. I'm betting this is a simple, stupid config problem. I'll
post back here when I find out what's up.

Multiple instances of the same entity bean?
I am designing a J2EE application that is made up of a number of separate components that each have a well-defined responsibility. Each component is made up of one or more J2EE components (web clients and EJBs). I want to design the application such that it is easy in the future to deploy each component (or a group of components) on different servers. In order to do this I need to make sure that the interfaces between each component are exposed as remote interfaces (but I will use local interfaces inside each component). However, there are a number of entity beans that need to be accessed by more than one component. I am wondering how best to expose these entity beans. I believe there are a number of options:
1. Expose remote interfaces on each of the shared entity beans. The disadvantage of this approach is that it is inefficient and that I will not be able to take advantage of container managed relationships. (I am intending to use container managed persistence.)
2. Create a facade object (stateful session bean) for each of the entity beans which exposes a remote interface and in turn accesses the shared entity beans locally. The disadvantage of this approach is that I have to create some extra EJBs and that I cannot directly make use of container managed relationships etc from the client component.
3. I don't know if this is an option but I am wondering whether I can deploy a copy of each shared entity bean with each application component. The advantage of this approach is that the component would access the entity locally and could make use of container managed relationships. However, I don't know what the issues are with having more than one instance (per primary-key) of an entity in the same application. I don't know whether this would cause errors of whether they would get out of sync (because different instances with the same primary key would be updated by different clients). Initially each component would be deployed in the same server but later they would be deployed in different servers. In both cases with this option each component (JAR) would have copies of the shared entity bean classes.
Any suggestions as to the best approach and whether the last option is feasible would be much appreciated.
Thanks.I think 2 beats 1. The main reason being to minimise the number of network calls. You're basically asking, are fascades a good idea? and the answer is yes.
You can obviously do 3 in different app servers. However you'll need to configure your app servers so they can handle the fact that they're not the only ones updating the database. This is to handle concurrency as you mentioned. How you do this will depend on your app server and will affect performance, but shouldn't be a problem.
I think you should definately decide up front what's going in different app servers, I dunno if 3 would work in the same app server.
Why do you would want to use multiple app servers?
Why not have everything in the same app?
Is is just the 1 database?

So I'm going to blurt out two classes of code. First is a plain entity bean and the second is a helper class with two static methods to help me to convert Object into byte[] and vice versa without much worrying.
Now the problem is, how to persist this entity bean and it's two Objects (two Lists) in a more "J2EE5 way". I just need to store these two Objects, or any Serializable Object, into persistent storage. So how to avoid this serialization by-hand that I'm doing... ?

Maybe using a @Lob notation or such? I've tried, but I can't get it workign. @Lob itself is not enough since it results in casting problems when retrieveing the data back from the persistent storage.
And oh, I'm just using the simple CMP with this.. EJB using EntityManager's persist method to store and so on..

How to load the existing data from the databse in the CMP entity bean?

my problem is as follows--
i am creating a CMP entity bean.in these beans client create the data instances using create() function.
now a entity bean will be created for the newly created data and it's EJBObject will also be formed.
now we will be able to perform finder methods over them.
remember these data has been newly created in the database.
but now if i want to perform the finder methods on the
existing data in the database( i don't need to use create() fn as i am not "creating" the data.). how will i perform the query over the existing data.
basically i have to make a CMP bean to extract the data corresponding to a particular condition , from the database table. i don't want to create the data in the database but just find out what data satisfies my condition.

Prashantyou have to use findByXXX methods. depending on your appserver you may have to declare them (and eventually the query you want to be used) in the vendor specific deploiement descriptor.
(e.g. using jboss i don't remember having explicitly declare the findBySomeField method - where someField is a persistent field - in the dd, whereas with bas all finder methods have to be explicitly declared)

could anyone tell me what's the difference between 'java:comp/env/' and without it

Deploying BMP Entity Bean with primary key calss
Hi,
I am using EJB 2.0 with and websphere studio 5.0 and database is sql server 2000.
My BMP Entity bean has a primary key class.From my client I am invoking the Entity Bean by calling it's findbyprimarykey method.
The home interface of my findbyprimarykey method returns a class of type Remote.But in the Entity Bean class,the return type is the primarykey class type.
My problem is invoking this findbyprimarykey from the client to get the remote interface so that the other business methods of the entity bean can be called.
The control goes into the ejbFindbyPrimaryKey but when it is returing from the Entity Bean class,it gives a remote exception (as the return type in Entity Bean class and Home interface are different for the findbyprimarykey method).
I think that somewhere in the deployment decriptor in my websphere,i have to specify the primarykey class type,which i am missing out and hence getting the error.
Please help me out with your advice and solution.

It is likely that some libraries are missing in your client environment. (it has nothing to do with security)
Make sure that the libraries in JBoss client (folder your_jboss_folder/client) are in your client application classpath. In particular, look for jnp-client.jar.
This should solve the problem.
