Nslookup
hi all
i am using oracle database 11g R2
Oracle Grid 11g R2
Oracle Linux 5.5
i want to know about DNS and Scan name.
i read somewhere that for installation purposes we need to define or configure Scan name in /etc/hosts
and i also read that we do not need to configure Scan Name with IP address in /etc/hosts.
and for Rac we need three DNS if yes then how could we configure three DNS and what will be
purpose of these three DNS?
as i configured SCAN NAME in hosts
but when i look for scan name then it just returned lisntener as true without scan name and IP address.
and i also create nslookup script with my scan name and ip address.
192.167.1.187 racnode-cluster-scan
and this the code i used.
#!/bin/bash
HOSTNAME=${1}
if [[ $HOSTNAME = "
racnode-cluster-scan" ]]; then
echo "Server:
24.154.1.34"
echo "Address:
24.154.1.34#53"
echo "Non-authoritative answer:"
echo "Name:
racnode-cluster-scan"
echo "Address:
192.168.1.187"
else
/usr/bin/nslookup.original $HOSTNAME
fiand here the nslookup result.

Dear Nisha,
as Aman mentioned, you can ignore the warning.
refer the link for configure dns server, if you would like, before doing anything read related documents. theoritical knowledge is more important as practical knowledge.
http://blog.ronnyegner-consulting.de/2009/10/15/configuring-a-small-dns-server-for-scan/
also refer the link:-http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/11g/OracleDB11gR2RACInstallationOnOEL5UsingVMwareServer2.php
The SCAN address should not really be defined in the hosts file. Instead is should be defined on the DNS to round-robin between 3 addresses on the same subnet as the public IPs. For this installation, we will compromise and use the hosts file.
If you are using DNS, then only the first line should be present in the "/etc/hosts" file.
http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/linux/DnsConfigurationForSCAN.php
read and then practice.
all the best

DNS not querying/ recognizing/ resolving internal domain name using nslookup
I've setup a virtual lab for practice purpose on VMware 8 workstation.
I have already asked this question in vm community but still got no answers hence asking it here.
In my vmware workstation 8, for practice lab purpose my setup is as follows:-
1] Win 2k8R2 Enetrprise edi.vm as my DC with DNS & DHCP configured and working perfect. DNS is getting resolved internally via NSLOOKUP. Server has manual ip assigned...192.168.1.xx series.
2] Win xp vm as my Client and getting dhcp lease address from the above DC and also the DNS is getting resolved internally via NSLOOKUP.
Now that these two vms are communicating perfectly with each other, I thought about connecting them to my physical internet.
So, in the Virtual network editor, I added a Host-only type network named
VMnet 04 with Use local dhcp service checkbook Disabled and on each of these vms, in network adapter settings, selected specific virtual network and pointed it to
VMnet 04 in both vms.
Now, in both the vms, an additional network connection got added and hence was successfully able to browse internet from both vms.
Now the REAL problem:--
After the above configuration, when I do NSLOOKUP on the DC, the DNS doesnt resolves external sites on the internet.
I havent specified any kind of conditional forwarding etc.., its a simple DNS setup.
I want it to resolve to the internal domain and also be connected to the internet .
What setting do I need to do in DNS or in VM network?
I tried almost all types of settings in vm virtual network editor by specifying dns manually and so on but none worked.Sorry my bad.... slight mistake in my question...Here is my corercted query--
After successfully connecting to the internet, when I do NSLOOKUP on the DC, the DNS doesnt resolve my internal domain/site but instead resolves external sites on the internet.
My computer FQDN is nri.wwe.com
Domain dns name is wwe.com
The above should get resolve internally but it searches on the internet.
This is how it should work
& it works perfect when I disable the other NAT network adapter (i.e. disable internet connectivity on my virtual DC)
C:\>nslookup nri.wwe.com
Server: nri.wwe.com
Address: 192.168.1.11
Name: nri.wwe.com
Address: 192.168.1.11
But when I again enable internet connectivity, this it what happens.
C:\nslookup www.wwe.com
DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.
Server: UnKnown
Address: 192.168.12.2
DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.
Non-authoritative answer:
DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.
Name: www.wwe.com.nsatc.net
Address: 64.152.0.124
Aliases: www.wwe.com
And when I again nslookup, this is what I get,
C:\>nslookup www.wwe.com
DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.
Server: UnKnown
Address: 192.168.12.2
DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.
DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.
DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.
*** Request to UnKnown timed-out
Now this 192.168.12.2 is VM assigned DNS via VM Natting with its own DHCP. If we do it manually, none of the virtual machines can connect to the internet. So I cannot fiddle with it anymore as I have already that as well. -
Hi All
I've been trying to trudge my way through an issue our client is having but I'm getting nowhere fast. This issue was discovered when searching for why users at our second site were experiencing slow logons every morning (5-10minutes to login).
Within our domain there are two domain controllers for the child domain we manage.
DC1 has connection back to the parent DC's (managed by our clients parent company), and also replicates both ways with DC2. DC2 is at another site, on another subnet and replicates to and from DC1 only.
DC2 appears to have no issues, it can resolve any address, nslookup either using itself or DC1 is fine and name servers resolve fine.
DC1 has massive issues with DC2 - using it for nslookup gives me the following:
I get this timeout error for internal and external names, but both DC's are able to ping and access internet with no issues.
When trying to resolve name servers from DC1, DC2 sits at 'validating' for a while and then comes back with 'a timeout occurred during validation'.
Restarting DNS Server, NETLOGON and registering in DNS from DC2 had DC1 talking to it fine for a few minutes, but then it went back how it is (and I haven't been able to replicate this fix since).
Reverse DNS zones are setup for all the subnets used, there are A records and PTR's for both DC's.
Performing 'ping -a dc2.ip.address' from DC1 comes back fine - it knows what it is in both directions (name and IP) but nslookup and nameserver resolution is still failing.
I just don't know where to go from here - from everything I've read they should be happy... Any ideas?Hi,
When NSLOOKUP starts, before anything else, it checks the computer's network configuration to determine the IP address of the DNS server that the computer uses.
Then it does a reverse DNS lookup on that IP address to determine the name of the DNS server.
If reverse DNS for that IP address is not setup correctly, then NSLOOKUP cannot determine the name associated with the IP address.

Nslookup works but ping does not
- I generally leave my wireless on.
- Came back to work after being wireless at a client and connected to both ethernet and wireless (just plug in and open the lid).
- Cannot ping office machines by name. I get "ping: cannot resolve hawk: Unknown host"
- If I do a nslookup I get:
Server: 192.168.242.70
Address: 192.168.242.70#53
Name: hawk.tagent.com
Address: 192.168.242.66
- If I turn off wireless the ping will start working.
- Turn wireless back on and ping still works.
- ifconfig before and after shows no change
- This has happened a couple times already.Kristi:

More about the environment:
- Very small domain - two AD servers (both Windows Server 2012), two computers (running Windows 8) and three or four devices (printer, phone, WiFi access point, etc.).
- The network (DHCP, DNS, servers and gateway static addresses etc.) is both IPv4 and IPv6.
- There are DNS running on both DC servers.
- The servers have static IPv4 and 6 addresses.
- The servers have both DNS addresses (both IPv4 and 6) in their IP configuration.
- Single forward lookup zone - mydomain.com (and of course _msdcs...).
- Two reverse lookup zones one for IPv4 and one for IPv6.
- DHCP has the two DNS servers in the options.
Call me old-fashioned but I've been using "nslookup yahoo.com" to diagnose my network problems for years and now when it doesn't answer unless i specify the dns server, makes me nervous. Am I right and if I am can you suggest possible problems in
my configrations.
Thanks ValIt's only showing "unknown" for the IPv6 address.
Go into your IPv6 properties, and set the IP and DNS address settings to be obtained automatically.
Then in Manage network adapters windows, change the view options to show Menu, then click on Advanced, Advanced, and make sure IPv4 is on top instead of IPv6.

Nslookup appears to be ignoring search domains
My organization has a number of shorthand URLs like 'wiki' and 'teamportal' that are on one of many domains we've acquired over the years; nobody knows what's on which domain except the DNS servers. For some reason, I can't resolve these domains. I can find them fine if I try the FQDN, however.
$ nslookup foo 172.17.1.8
Server: 172.17.1.8
Address: 172.17.1.8#53
** server can't find foo: SERVFAIL
$ nslookup foo.example.com 172.17.1.8
Server: 172.17.1.8
Address: 172.17.1.8#53
foo.example.com canonical name = intranet7.example.com.
Name: intranet7.example.com
Address: 10.8.250.134
My resolv.conf looks like this:
domain dhcp.example.com
nameserver 172.17.1.8
search examplesys.com example.com
Shouldn't that search directive tell nslookup to try those domains? What's going wrong?I've based my stuff on the samples. Unfortunately when I try and run them I get other errors. For instance when I get to the line
Dim rh As ResponseHolder = bipService.Get("path://InfoObjects/Root Folder/WWE Reports/" + REPORT_STRING + "@SI_SCHEDULEINFO, SI_PROCESSINFO", oGetOptions)
and the path string is:
"path://InfoObjects/Root Folder/WWE Reports/rtodbc3@SI_SCHEDULEINFO, SI_PROCESSINFO"

Nslookup Snow Leopard Server DNS problems
I have a mac mini that I'm trying to turn into a snow leopard server. Attached to the mac mini I have three external hard drives which act as back ups to our mac book pro laptops. I have installed the server software and downloaded all the updates and I can see the drives on the server and I can acess the external drives and backup to them with out a problem. The issue that I have is that when I run nslookup I get an error message which tells me that it can't find my name and that I need to rerun so software commands.
I'm also unable to run either dns or podcast producer which was the main reason for buying the server software. I have a static ip address and believe I have configured everything correctly but I just can't seem to sort out the DNS and problems.
Any thoughts - thanks

Host and nslookup on OVM 3.0.3
Hi,
Does anyone know which rpm contains the host and nslookup binaries in OVM 3.0.3? Its usually bind-utils but that's not present in the image. And the default installation does not contain the binaries
Thanksping does a name lookup and an icmp echo test. If it works, fine. If it fails, you must parse the error message to determine if it failed due to the name lookup or the icmp echo. I'd always thought that nslookup was a windows command but the google tells me it's popular in the Linux world too. On Linux, I've always used dig or host. Neither of which appear to be on the Dom0 install.

Make nslookup read /etc/hosts file
Dear,
OS: OUL5x64
my nslookup resolve the name thru dns server.
question :
how to make nslookup resolves name through /etc/hosts file.
i do have /etc/resolv.conf and /etc/nsswitch.conf file
here is my nsswitch.conf
/etc/nsswitch.conf
#hosts: db files nisplus nis dns
hosts: files
but it never uses the file to resolve the name.
how can i force it to read /etc/hosts file first
Thanks in advance!Perhaps it would help to elaborate on WHY you want nslookup to use the /etc/hosts file?
If you look at the the name of the nslookup utility, it quite probably is an abbreviation of "nameserver lookup". That strongly suggests it is a tool for querying nameservers.
NOT a tool to debug the name lookups of your operating system.
On the platforms I use (I don't use HPUX), you can query and set the nameserver nslookup uses. I would consider it a bug if the nslookup tool uses /etc/hosts if set in nsswitch.conf.
this is how I lookup what server is set for the utility:
$ nslookup
serverDefault server: 10.0.1.1
Address: 10.0.1.1#53this is how nslookup responds to a query:
nu.nlServer: 10.0.1.1
Address: 10.0.1.1#53
Non-authoritative answer:
Name: nu.nl
Address: 62.69.184.53
Name: nu.nl
Address: 62.69.179.198(I don't know how the "jive quote" comes in, it is supposed to be a "bigger than" sign) -
NSLOOKUP is resolving common for all the domains.
Hi,
Here i have the issue in my DNS server which is Server 2008 R2 Enterprise(64bit). My DNS is resolving common IP for all the domains whencheck with nslookup, But users can able to do browsing with my DNS. Only thing is
not resolving nslookup. Eg: User is trying to access mcafee.com. It is browsing to respective domain. Same user is accessing microsoft.com. It is also browsing to respective domain. So, When in go to CMD and do nslookup for both mcafee.com and microsoft.com
it is resolving a common IP 72.52.4.91. URL gives you much clarity on my issue.

Here i have created a link for the error image which in took with the provided steps.

Nslookup fails were as tnsping works - Oracle Client on Linux 4.0
Hello Gurus,
I am able to connect to Oracle DB on the Linux server and not from Oracle client on Linux box. I have installed Oracle Client windows version on my laptop and same release and version for Linux on Linux box.
When I try to connect to the DB from Oracle Client installed on Linux box give me ORA-012545:Connect failed because target host or object does not exists.
I have tried tnsping and the server name (hostname) ,IP and DB of the server it works.
When I tried nslookup servername (hostname) , IP and DB it fails.
Anyone over there please help me out. This is something silly happening works on Windows Oracle client and not on Linux Oracle Client. One thing to do add Linux Oracle Client has Virtual IP to it. ITs host file has an entry for local host as follows : 127.0.0.1 localhost.local.domain localhost.
Also when I tried to create netservice names using netca it's just clean.
Please help me.
Thanks in advance
Thanks

It is connected to wifi with a dhcp address.
I look in networks -> dns and I see my company zone added as a Search Domain.
I have a web site located at: http://server - server is the server name whose fqdn is server.company.local
When I ping server the name is not resolved.
When I ping server.company.local the name is resolved and the ping responds.
(also http requests to http://server are not working)
When I nslookup server the name resolves to IP address (without the need for the domain name suffix).
What do I need to do to ensure ping/http/etc resolve server to server.company.local?You have to use something other than "local" as the TLD. It conflicts with Bonjour.

Hi,
I am trying to configure a DNS server on OEL 6 U2 on virtualbox. I can make forward nslookup work but reverse nslookup fails with 'connection timed out; no servers could be reached'.
Below is the information from my setup files.

NarenYour welcome.
Btw, I'm not so sure it is a good idea to put the local RAC devices into the DNS. It can easily lead to confusion and makes operation depending on BIND.
You can create a /etc/hosts.conf file containing "order hosts, bind", which specifies that /etc/hosts takes precedence over the name servers. -
Hi All,
I have set up 2 Windows Server 2012 domain controllers (DCA & DCB). DCA points at DCB as the primary DNS, and itself as the alternate DNS. DCB points at DCA as the primary DNS, and itself as the alternate DNS.
When both DCs are running and if I do an nslookup on DCA: The result is as follows:
Default Server: dcb.testdomain.com
Address: 30.30.30.2
nslookup on DCB:
Default Server: dca.testdomain.com
Address: 30.30.30.1
Client PC (Windows 7 Pro):
1st DNS : 30.30.30.31
Alternate DNS: 30.30.30.32
nslookup on the client PC
Default Server: dca.testdomain.com
Address: 30.30.30.1
Up to here everything is fine. Now if I turn off DCA, and do an nslookup, the result is as follows:
DCB nslookup:
DNS request timed out.
time out was 2 seconds.
Default Server Unknown
Address: 30.30.30.31
Client PC nslookup:
DNS request timed out.
time out was 2 seconds.
Default Server Unknown
Address: 30.30.30.31
I waited for more than 15 minutes an tried again, it didn't help.
I have been reading a few similar posts on this matter, but couldn't find the answer.
I would expected it to display the DCB when I do an nslookup.
Question 1: Shouldn't that display DCB rather than displaying a time out message when I do nslookup?
Question 2: The fact that it displays a time out message, does it mean that more configuration needs to be done? If so please kindly advice what needs to be done.
I did an ipconfig /displaydns command. I realized that the order of DNS have changed on both DCB and the Client PC:
Now, they both display DCB on the top of the list, whereas they were displaying DCA on the top of the list prior to the shut down.
Question 3: Does it mean that the Client PC now knows that the 1st DNS is down and so it's using the 2nd DNS?
If so, why does the nslookup display the time out message?
Question 4: Is it possible to configure either of DNS Server or the DNS client, so it displays the 2nd DNS when the first DNS is not accessible and when I do nslookup?
Thank you for.Hi Ton_2013,
Based on my understanding, the issue we are experiencing is that: when the primary DNS server is down, the result of the tool Nslookup is to diaplay the time out message at first. Right?
Based on my knowledge, timed out message is means that the server did not respond to a request after a certain amount of time and a certain number of retries. Because the primary DNS server is down, it can't respond to this request and time is out. When
the primary DNS server can't respond, the secondary DNS server works to ensure effective work. And the order is changed as you said.
As to the reason why the result is still the same even when the order has changed, we can try to use Network Monitor to capture network traffic and view and analyze it to find the cause. And the cause may be the cache. For your information, please refer
to the following link to download the tool Network Monitor:
