Number of datafiles to add

Dear Gentlemans,
Do you know a sapnote or any source which recommends to add 2 or more data files (because of data load distribution)?
I think adding only one data file when it is needed is not harmful and keeps costs low.
for example: we have 33 data files with 20Gb size, but we add only one 20Gb when we reach 80% fill level.
The version is MAX DB 7.6.04.15
Thanks in advance!
Tibor Meszaros

Hi Tibor,
the answers to questions like these could usually be found in notes like '1173395 - FAQ: MaxDB Konfiguration'.
Concerning the question about rather adding one data volume everyime or more it's quite difficult to give a general optimal answer.
When you add the new volume  when the data area is used up to 80% than all subsequent changed pages will be written to this new volume until the the usage is evened out over all data volumes (e.g. the usage for all volumes has dropped to 75%).
Since the writing is done asychronously this is usually not an issue.
Anyhow, in extreme cases (e.g. huge amount of changed and added data + very small cache + rest of the volumes filled up 100%) adding more volumes than one at a time might turn out beneficical.
As a general guideline you simple should take care to keep the freespace on a level where you know that you've enough time to add a new volume until the increase of data leads to a  DB FULL.
hope that helps,
regards,
Lars

  • Maximum number of datafiles

    Hi All,
We have a PROD database (Oracle Version 10.2.0.2) and in this DB a tablespace has crossed maximum number of datafiles (975 datafiles)
Any suggestions what can be done to avoid the warnings and also does this have any impact on DB performance?
    Thanks and Regards,
    Nick.

(Oracle Financials even used to have no foreign keys). In standard, Peoplesoft neither has no FK. And no PK. And no trigger. And what's the issue ? You don't have to update the data outside the application or component interface.
Everything must be done is respect of the application layer.
    Everything, including the database management.
As a Peoplesoft admin for the last few years, yes, I have to confirm some high blood pressure because of that management could seems "strange" (that could explain some migraine I have, thanks for linking both), but believe me, after several years, you learn how you can bypass the proprietary tool provided by the ERP and manage everything through SQL*Plus, but right, always by maintaining the ERP metamodel. And finally, the hairs are still there.

  • Which is better? Resize datafile or add datafile in same diskgroup.

    Hi All,
Can you explain which is better option between adding a datafile or resizing one in a diskgroup with 20 disks?
    Regards,
    Avi

    hello buddy,
Since you know that a small file datafile has a limitation of 32gb then if your tablespace is out of this space then the solution is add more dfiles, also, in my point of view less datafiles in a hughe database is better for evite ckpt contention. The answer is dependo always for your situation!!!
    I hope it helps

  • If someone texts me a number, how do i add that to my contacts?

when I touch the number in the text message it just calls that number! instead i want to add to contacts. how do i do this?

Huntress - thank you for the suggestion but I didn't mean the number of the person who texted me - i meant if someone who is already a contact sent a phone number IN a text message that I wanted to save to contacts.  I will use the was that Razmee suggested unless anyone knows an easier way.

  • Resize datafile or add new datafile which is good?

    Hi all
we have 80 GB database size and only two tablespace have space around 60 Gb
these two tablespace have one database each around 30 gb so
My question is it good to resize current datafile or
It it good to add new datafile ?

Your question is which is "best"; add datafile or resize right? If yes, then I think below links will answer you :

  • I have a column in a Numbers document that currently only contains a number--the numbers are different in different columns.  Before each number I want to add the words "Pack Qty."  How would I do this?

I have a column in a Numbers document that currently contains a number and that number is different in different columns.  I want to add the words "Pack Qty" before each number in the column.  How do I do that?  I'm using Numbers '09 on a brand new Macbook Pro.  Thanks!

In an adjacent column add the formula:
    ="Pack Qty: "&<CELL>
where <CELL> is the cell in the same row where the quantity is,
    Like:
    E2="Pack Qty: "&D2
select, and hold,  the little circle at the bottom right corner of the selction, then drag down

  • Basic customizing for warehouse number 0001 in EWM (Add-on)

    Hi,
does anyone know how to get the basic customizing for warehouse number 0001 into the EWM?
Our EWM is installed as add-on, so the client copy from client 000 to my client will not work (I would override also the ERP customizing this way).  I think it would work with the BC sets, but I couldn't find a list which of them have to be activated for the basic customizing ...
    Regards,
    Monika.

    Hi Monica
There is a whole bunch of BCsets which have been arranged in a heirarchical order as per the way they should be implemented in the standard system. They have all the settings to set up WH 0001 with structure, product, HU etc. The main BC set which has this is '/SCWM/BASICS'. This is a heirarchial BC set which has all the required config step by step.
Further more there are specific BC sets for setting up the standard config for inbound and outbound deliveries - '/SCWM/DLV_INBOUND' & '/SCWM/DLV_OUTBOUND'.
You can use these to get the basic config in place.
    Hope this helps.

I cannot create a catalog because everywhere I try on my computer, it comes up with cannot Lightroom cannot create a catalog on network volumes.  And is there any way to contact Adobe directly?  Would you be able to give me a phone number and/or email address?@@

The short and direct answer to your question about catalogs on a network drive is that you can't do that. The catalog must reside on a local drive.

  • Number of Datafiles and best pactice for datafile

Is there a recommended number of data files that should be created with each Oracle database installation? Or best practice?..
What is the typical number? What are the pros and cons of having a large number of data files vs a smaller number?
we have created >3000 data files for 1 database. This is based on Customer's request. I want find out if this is against current industry best practice..

    Hi,
imho it depends on your architecture as well...if you put all the data for all your tablespaces in one file and customers create heavy traffic on various tablespaces you could be in for a gain in performance if you split the tablespaces on several files on different disks.
After all is said an drunk, the customer is King. If he wants a gazillion files, you have to provide for him. The customers usually buy their application off some company to whom they pay huge maintenance bills (the rule sometimes seems to be: if it's expensive, it's got to be good). And those companies are sometimes hard to seduce to change their proven concept/architeture. Nevertheless, as Satish Kandi said: for you manageability should come first; so get yourselves a good set of nerves on a nice day and go for the discussion. Remember: The DBA Knows Best! ;-)

  • Transportable tablespace number of datafiles

We are using transportable tablespace to move tablespaces.
Our database one data tablespace contain 21 datafile and index tablespace contain 18 datafiles.
    Tablespace Name:TEST_DATA Datafiles: /oradata/test_data001.dbf,/oradata/test_data002.dbf, .... /oradata/test_data021.dbf
    Tablespace Name:INDEX_DATA Datafiles: /oradata/index_data001.dbf,/oradata/index_data002.dbf, .... /oradata/test_data018.dbf
I will take export Successfully bellow using command.
    exp "'/ as sysdba'" file=exp_tts.dmp log=exp_tts.log transport_tablespace=y \
    tablespaces=TEST_DATA,INDEX_DATA
For Example. (datafile sample i have given)
    imp "'/ as sysdba'" file=exp_tts.dmp log=imp_tts.log fromuser=xxx \
    touser=xxx transport_tablespace=y datafiles=/oradata/test_data001.dbf,/oradata/test_data002.dbf, .... /oradata/test_data021.dbf, \
    /oradata/index_data001.dbf,/oradata/index_data002.dbf, .... /oradata/test_data018.dbf
Over all we are using 39 datafiles in transportable tablespace.
My question is import side i will give all datafiles name. it is very Complicated ( it's possiable to miss any datafile name)
1.Any other way to using import ?
2.It's possiable to given one location in all datafiles. (ex datafile=/oradata)
3.we are using source location and target location same.

    hi,
you can give your desired location during import... but you should give the exact location of the datafiles that have been restored..
    i.e,
if you copied all datafiles to /uo1/oradata/test_data001.dbf
then in the import you must mention the same,, datafiles='/uo1/oradata/test_data001.dbf'.....
    import will done successfully...
orelse if you can do cloning do RMAN clone..

  • Export/Import of Database to increase the number of datafiles

My BW system is close to 400 GB and it only has 3 datafiles.  Since we have 8 CPU cores, I need 8 datafiles.  What is the best way to export/import the database in order to achive 8 datafiles?

With a BW system that size you can probably get away with it.  You most likely do at least a few full loads so all that data will be evenly distrubuted when you drop and reload.  If you can clean up some of your PSAs and log tables you can probably shrink the 3 files down a little anyway.  If you do little maintenance like that every few weeks, after locking auto growth, you can probably shave 2-3 GBs off each file each week.  Do that for a few months and your large files will love 20 GBs while the other ones start to grow.  Rebuilding indexes also helps with that.  You will be surprised how fast they will level out that way.
With regard to performance you should be fine.  I certainly wouldnt do it at 10 am on Tuesday though :-).  You can probably get away with it over a weekend though.  It will take basically no time at all to create them and very little IO.  If you choose to clean out the 3 existing ones that will take some time.  I have found it takes about 1-3 hours to shrink a 150 GB datafile down to 100 GBs, that was with 8 CPUs, 30 GBs of RAM, and an SAN that I don't fully understand

Now ask yourself, what is the use of this query, and how I am suppose to use the values returned and also what is the purpose for each value.
Once you have the answers for these questions, the requirement becomes more clearer, doubts vanish and more often you can do things yourself.

  • Add or resize datafile

My db is Oracle 8.1.7. Recently I found one of my tablespace is used about to 80%.
The tablespace has 3 4g-size-datafile. What should I do ? Add a new datafile or resize the datafiles?
    Which one better?

    Well it depends
If there are going to be in the single array adding/resize doest not have any difference
IF you are going to add a file in different disk it can help to reduce I/O but maintenance overhead will arise with number of datafiles
    Virtually you can select anything
