Numbers 09 - A lot of Data & A lot of Formulas = SLOW

Hey guys,
I am currently using Numbers to graph things from a POS database. I am using an export with about 8100 rows and 6 columns. I am pumping this through A LOT of formulas (about 8000 in a rough count (~40 in a column and 200+ columns)). Most of these are COUNTIFS and SUMIFS. The documents takes around 15 minutes to open on a 2.4ghz Core2Duo iMac w/2gb of RAM and 20+ on a 2.0ghz CoreDuo Macbook Pro w/ 2gb of RAM.
Does anyone have some ideas on how to speed up the calculations that are going on?
Any Numbers gurus out there who want to share some optimization tricks?

Numbers'09 is faster but even so it is not made for huge spreadsheets.
Numbers will be much faster with smaller tables on multiple sheets which it is made for. You are also getting close to the column import limit of 255, can you split them up ?
If you really need to work with that size spreadsheet Excel, Neo Office or Open Office would probably work far better for you. Keep Numbers and all it's many attributes for home use

When I open numbers, my spreadsheet appears blank.  yet, when I moveacrossa row, data appears in the formula bar.  How can I fix it so I can see the sheet?

I had the same issue for several days (and several reboots).  During that time I found I could print the spread sheet as a pdf, though I couldn't see it except cell by cell.
Suddenly the problem disappeared.  I never did know why the problem appeared nor why it disappeared.
In the interim I ran the disk utility several times and repaired permissions twice.  That may have helped, but I don't know.

  • Using Numbers, can I calculate the date that will be eg 45 days ahead of a given date?

Using Numbers, can I calculate the date that will be eg 45 days ahead of a given date?

    MWB,
Certainly. Let's say that your given date is in B2. The date 45 days earlier can be found with:
    =B2 – 45.
    Almost seems too simple.

click and hold on one cell, then drag to select the range, then release, then type the delete key.  Only inlude cells in the range you do not want to keey the contents of the cell.  You can remove one-off cells by holding the command key and clicking cells to add or remove as needed.

You will really need to explain in a little more detail what you mean by "two sets of numeric data in one cell".
Also, is this Numbers for OS X? You are in the iOS forum.

  • Definition of Reference Data in complex Fox Formulas

Hello IP Experts / Gurus / Developers,
As far as I know there is no real concept behind the determination of Reference Data in Integrated Planning, when you do run functions from a sequence and not directly on a Dataprovider (where you have the possiblity to define editable and not editable structure elements).
The reference data is generated at runtime of the FOX Code. Using Complex FOX Code with a nested loop, the reference data in the planning buffer (seen in Planning Modeller) isnt really the data that it should be. Some read statements (in loops, but also outside the loops) are not recognized and obviously do not lead to the definition of Reference Data. This is not a specific problem of my function or architecture. It doesnt occur, when I reduce the complexity of the FOX Code to a few rows.
The question that I have is: Is there any possibility to define reference data in a fox statement or before running it?
Function modules, hidden statements etc. ?
Maybe a trick with running a loop like the one below (doesnt work, it also leads to immense performance issues)
    FOREACH YEAR, CCODE IN SELECTION.
       VALUE = {0amount, YEAR, CCODE).
       EXIT.
    ENDFOR.
Thanks in advance for sharing your experience.

A: Definition of Reference Data in complex Fox Formulas

Hi Michael,
I don't think I understand from your post what is the issue that you are trying to solve; but it would not be correct to say that there is 'no real concept' behind determination of reference data.
Reference data is the data a planning function needs to read, which is outside the selection of the filter under which the function is currently running. So for the same function, reference data can change when running under different filters. Reference data can only be read, not modified - I am sure that is already clear. And also, the selection corresponding to reference data is not locked by planning.
Whenever you put any selection (inside the curly braces - {}) on the right hand side of the equal sign (talking about Fox), and if this selection is not contained in the filter, this data will be read as reference data. Also, statement like FOREACH in REFDATA will read reference data. Regarding the amount of data that is read (and hence the performance impact), it depends on factors like master data (for eg, in the Foreach statement in your code, it must be slow becuase of the huge master data that CCODE might be having), and number of records in cube, that are being read. You cannot really "define" reference data using code - it will be determined at run-time.
Hope this helps.

  • Since the last update to v31.0 lots of extra folders have appeared in my account folders with the numbered names like: popstate-6.dat

It just seems to be lots of empty folders, number increased after a restart!

I have changed no settings from the previous version, I have been using Thunderbird for a long time and have never come across this type of folder before but judging from their name, I would say they are a Thunderbird internal maybe temporary POP account related data folder, nothing seems to be in them, but there are more on the busier accounts. I'm using Windows XP if that helps. Somebody must know what these folders are and what generates them, I'm pretty sure it is not user related but rather update related, which seems reasonable.

  • Numbers- How can I have data entered on multiple iPads go to one central database virtually in real

Is it possible using numbers to enter data on multiple devices and have them go to one location. We have employees using separate devices at a physical location entering data and we would like all that data to go to one spreadsheet.

Numbers documents do not provide for simultaneous access by more than one user. While in use, the document resides in the device on which it is being used. When it is closed (and saved) the revised document on that device replaces the original (or an already saved version edited by a different user. If sveral copies of the document are open at the same time, the version on the server will contain only the original version as modified by the last user to save.
    Scenario:
User A opens document, and begins editing.        original on server
User B opens document, and bgins editing.          no change
User C opens document and begins editing.         no change
User B saves and closes document.                   version on server contains B's changes
User C saves and closes document.                   version on server contains only C's changes
User A saves and closes document.                   version on server contains only A's changes
    Short answer: No.

  • When I import a text file(comma separated )into a numbers spread sheet all the data goes into one column. Why does the text not go into separate columns based on the commas.

When I import a text file(comma separated) into a numbers spreadsheet all the data goes into one column instead of individual columns based on the comma separators.  Excel allows you to do this during the import..  Is there a way to accomplish this in numbers without opening it in Excel and the importing into Numbers.

Your user info says iPad. This is the OS X Numbers forum. Assuming you are using OS X… Be sure the file is named with a .csv suffix.
(I don't have an iPad, so I don't know the iOS answer.)

  • Since mountain lion Find in Numbers 3-4 columns of data missing and some columns in the wrong order. Fortunately I have a back up on my iPad and was able to put that version in as a new file. Why has this happened ?

Since mountain lion I have noticed 3-4 columns of data missing from a Numbers file. I have fortunately been able to replace the total file from my iPad version but why has this happened. Makes me lose trust in Numbers

    That would be strange.

  • .numbers .xls without loss of data?

hi all. i love numbers but have recently bought Excel and am in desperate need to finish a spreadsheet that i am having trouble finishing in numbers.
does anyone know if i can simply open a numbers file in xls and not lose any data whatsoever?
i may need to try this but i can't do it if i lose the data as i will have to spend a month recreating it.
thank in advance for any pro level advice...

    thanks jerrold.
you and wayne are a godsend in helping me get this done. i am trying to finish this up in numbers but may do one test in exporting to xls to see how it looks.
also really looking forward to the numbers upgrade you were kind enough to bring to my attention.
    big thanks...

  • Help with lists and Numbers - how can I separate data from one column?

I have a series of data entries that have two or three pieces of information listed in one column (it was a list copied from the Internet). My data is in this form all in one column (ie Column A):
    XXXX -- YYYY, ZZZZ
I want to be able to easily split that data into three columns (A, B, and C) without having to go through and manually separate all of the entries? I'd ideally like to have XXXX in one column, the '--' removed, YYYY in another column, and ZZZZ in a third column, like this:
    Column A Column B Column C
    ====== ====== ======
    XXXX YYYY ZZZZ
Is this possible? Any help is appreciated.

Open or paste your material in your favorite texteditor. TextEdit will suffice but there are better applications. Make sure your material is consistent, especially that there are no stray characters or extra spaces studded in the text. You can do this by using the clean up routine as described below.
    1. Copy the set of characters you want to replace. In this case " -- " Note that there are spaces on each side of the dashes and you want to get rid of those.
    2. Open the *Find and Replace* dialogue:
    +Menu > Edit > Find > Find…+ (or command f)
Paste the " -- " into the Find: field, then type a comma in the Replace: field or
Copy and paste a tab from the document or
Click on the Advanced button and enter a tab using the Insert… button that appears.
    3. Click *Replace All.*
Repeat as necessary. If it doesn't seem to work, copy and paste the bits that stick, usually there is something not visibly different but different as far as the computer iust concerned.
When you are finished save the results as a comma or tab delimited delimited .txt file and reopen it in Numbers.

  • IsDateTime() function evaluates numbers 1,2,3 as Date

I'm using following code in format formula it's working but for numeric data i.e. 1,2,3 the function
    IsDateTime(ToText(CurrentFieldValue))
returns true and in turn it shows numbers 1,2 as 31 Dec 1899
    if IsDateTime(ToText(CurrentFieldValue)) then
            ToText(CDate(CurrentFieldValue), "dd MMM yyyy")
    else
        ToText(CurrentFieldValue)

    Brian,
Thanks for your attention again. The SQL query for report dynamically selects fields based on user input and create predefined aliases so data and data type varies.
The field in report can get following three types of data.
    Number (e.g. "1" or "2" or "3" or "3786")
DateTime (e.g. "Dec 10, 2011 11:23:43 AM", I can't tell you the exact date format because it's not string it's Date type from DB)
    Varchar (e.g. "EW533HDS")
User just select data fields to be shown in the report but I want to show Date fields as "10 Dec 2011" instead of default DateTime that is only the problem that caused this thread to open.

  • Numbers cell keeps showing the date

I find that Column A in Numbers (List style) keeps showing the date. I don't want to show the date. I want this column to show just a number. How do I prevent this column from turning numbers I type in there as a date?

select the column and set the format to "Automatic":

Ive added a chart so I can see the electricity usage over time, but its showing each date eqidistant rather than showing them on a timeline.
Can anyone tell me what Im doing wrong?

Looks like Numbers cannot plot date data. Please provide Numbers Feedback to Apple.
