Numbers as Excel replacement

I have really been trying to like Numbers.
I am a long time Excel user and spreadsheet addict. I am not a power user by any means (I don't even know what a pivot table is much less how to make or use one). I mostly use the spreadsheets for financial tracking and time tracking (logbooks).
On a nice clean Leopard install, I did not want to pollute it with all the duplicate fonts and other garbage MS Office spews on to the hard drive. So I bought iWork.
Almost everything I try to do requires a work-around and from what I read here, I am not the only one experiencing this.
I know and fully understand that Numbers is NOT Excel and I don't want it to be. It just seems that Apple has kind of dropped the ball even in what a simple spreadsheet program should be. It almost seems like they never expected anyone to use times and dates on their spreadsheets.
I know this is the first try at the spreadsheet market, but I must say that for the first time, I am disappointed in Apple.
I cannot recommend Numbers and am considering "polluting" my clean hard drive with Office spewta once again to have access to time and date calculations, freezing panes, etc.
I hope things change on the next rev. and I hope it is a free update.

Take your attendance example, I have the same situation. If you put the dates in the header row they will appear in each page in print view, this is what I do. <</div>
If you are in "print view", does that mean you have to switch to some other view to edit info? Or is it still allow edits but just is a different way of seeing things? Also, you mention header ROW. I haven to have three rows for what I would want to always see. I also have two columns I freeze.
In excel we all put the latest date at the right-hand end of the table. Why not do it this way, put the latest date right after the names (by adding a column there as you take attendance each class), thus your first day of class would be the one that is pushed off the screen and that would not matter <</div>
Okay, so everything ends up in reverse order and I guess that could be done, even though it isn't normal, but what about when I'm looking through a series of dates to see patterns - like maybe the student doesn't do their homework sometimes and looking back I might notice it is always on Wednesdays. I'd still need to scroll but I wouldn't see the student's name as I did. Hiding columns would also make it harder every time I need to look for these things.
Then instead of making all the totals to be at the far right of the column, make a separate table for that. <</div>
That is certainly an option that I think would work fine, though as I switched from one to another, I'd still have to find the student in question on a second sheet instead of having already found them on the first.
I'll need to actually try this on Numbers sometime when I get to the Apple store again.
It does seem to me that being able to freeze panes is a pretty simple, basic capability to have though. I really can't imagine why it wouldn't be something people would want. It would be like saying we only want a one-button mouse so we are different than windows!

  • Numbers and Excel

    Hello,
    New apple user here... I was assured at the Apple store that the iWork and Office programs (e.g., numbers=excel, pages=word) were compatible and that I could use the iWork package to work from home.
    Well, here we are at crunch time, and I cannot even open any of the files that have been emailed by my office (excel and word documents -- and the help desk is not open). Can anyone tell me how to open these files, or was I naive in believing the sales person that these packages are compatible???
    Also, from reviewing the discussion boards, it appears I'm going to have trouble sending these documents back to the office via email. Is that true, too?
    Any insight is very appreciated!
    Thanks, MdL

    first, there is a size limit on what you can open in numbers from excel. And I believe it is based on your computers installed memory.
    Second, yes you can email the files back. but you might need to view it in excel to delete one or more "index" pages. Since numbers can contain multiple "tables" per "sheet". Excel can only work with 1 table per sheet. So numbers will take any additional tables and make them their own standalone sheets in excel.
    these new sheets are listed in a table of contents type page (there are ways of telling it not to produce this page, search on here for it).
    The salesperson should have asked more detailed questions. I would never have told you to completely abandon Excel until after you had tested numbers to see if it would do what you wanted it to do. Numbers is NOT meant to be a complete excel replacement. It is NOT meant to be corporate level productivity. Its is meant to be "The spreadsheet for the rest of us" (Steve Jobs, August 2007).
    hope this helps even a little bit,
    Jason
    I can never find the page I am looking for. I never quite enter the right query words in the search box. If anyone else has the size limitation technical article page, please post the link for me... I will keep looking for it.
    Thanks for helping guys/Gals,
    Jason

  • How can I save a spreadsheet prepared in numbers to excel so that all of my pc using work colleagues can view

    How can I save a spreadsheet prepared in numbers to excel so that all of my pc using work colleagues can view.  I have recently upgraded to Lion and am wondering whether I have made a big mistake. I am the only Mac user within the company i work for and up to now this has not been a problem

  • How do I paste a table from Numbers or Excel into Ibook Author exactly as the original?

    I am new to iMac and Ibook Author.
    I am writing a statistical paper in Ibooks Author.
    I have Chapter heading, now section heading and body.  I want to paste a table from numbers or excel into my iBook as this has the results of my analysis.
    As part of my analysis, I want to copy a 5 column table with 633 rows, which is essentially my table of data.  I have the table in numbers and excel.
    When I copy the table in numbers or excel, followed by pasting (CmD V) into iBooks, I get the first 20 rows in a table format and the remainder of the table is missing.  The table appears to end at the end of the page.
    I can not figure out how to paste the entire data as my table.
    Its holding me back...
    Any ideas?

    Hello Loquitir,
    I am not fully sure if I understand but I gather since there are so many rows only a certain amount fits on a single page.
    How many rows does actually fit on a page in iBooks Author?
    There is a method that would look pretty cool that is used to create a double page spread that would look great but instead of having a double page you could maybe have three or four pages.
    Here is a quick idea that I stuck together, additionally when you are copying and pasting form Numbers to iBooks Author just select the cells that you want.
    Copy and paste within iBooks Author and then go back and get the next row of the table that you want.
    I hope I am clear in what I am describing.
    Regards,
    Nigel

  • Is there way to have Numbers open excel files automatically

    Is there way to have Numbers open excel files automatically when I click on my old excel files rather than opening numbers and then opening file?

    Try this: from Finder, select an Excel file. Hit Apple-i to get the file info. You'll see a section labeled *Open with:* Use the dropdown to select Numbers and click the *Change All* button.

  • Ios7 will not convert numbers to excel. Is there a solution?

    Has apple addressed the issue with Ios7 not converting numbers to excel?

    Do you mean Numbers?  Numbers on OS X can export something in Excel format.
    iOS 7 can read in Excel documents and open them for editing in Numbers for iOS if you wish.
    But iOS 7 itself doesn't really have anything to do with converting documents _to_ Excel format, if that's what you're asking.

    I have Mac OS X version 10.7.3 Does this have any numbers or excel like programs or will I need to purchase them?

    Hi Linda...
    You can purchase Numbers from the App Store.
    You can launch the App Store from your Apple menu > App Store
    Or from your Dock >
    Or from your Applications folder.

  • How do I export v-card formatted files for use with either Numbers or Excel?

    How do I export v-card formatted files for use with either Numbers or Excel?

    Did you open Automator and just look around?
    Actions are listed in the left pane.
    You drag them into the workflow on the right in the order you need to process the items that you want.
    If this is a on-off requirement, just make a Workflow. If you plan to use it often, make it an Application.
    If you want to select the contacts you want to export, use a get Selected action. You'd then select the contacts in Contacts App before running the workflow.
    I'm not on a Mac to take screenshots, so you'll have to look at Automator's help or google for more info.

  • Export iCal diary events into Numbers or Excel

    Anyone know how to export diary events from iCal into Numbers or Excel?
    I have a calendar for each of my clients and I would like to export a number of these into a spreadsheet. I then want to create a document as an attachment to a report. Just basic stuff like:
    Event Title
    Dates [start and end]
    Time [start and end]
    Location
    Notes
    I came across a script called iCalToExcel but it does not seem to work with Leopard...

    Thanks Maurice
    Here's the one I went with: Bento 2
    This was released shortly after my post. It integrates with iCal to the extent that you can search for appointments using various criteria (like the name of the calendar) then export the records found into Numbers which is just what I want.
    Thanks for your input though.

  • Numbers find and replace

    Sorry, my only "question" about this is WHY Apple would put such poor software on the market. Functions such as "find and replace" in Numbers are so incomplete and poorly designed they make the entire package useless. F&R only does text, cannot F&R in selected columns and.....will start to search an entire spreadsheet using the last "find" entry and/or starts to search before all of the "find" has been typed. When working with a large spreadsheet, Numbers will start its own find search, not allowing the "replace" entry to even be entered until it searches the entire spreadsheet (sometimes that requires force quitting Numbers to make it stop the useless search.)
    I have been a Mac user since the very first 64K model. For Apple to release Numbers and then discuss how "elegant" it is an embarrasment to all Apple fans.

    Jerrold:
    Thank you for your response.
    The problem is, I HAVE sent comments to Apple regarding Numbers before. As we all know, Apple has made many many decisions (automatic save, etc., etc.) without any attempt at asking their users if that change would be useful or a problem.
    My hope is the dedicted Apple community might be able to get some attention for a long standing problem. Apple has issued multiple updates for numbers that do nothing to correct the problems real users have communicated to them.
    I have been the "promoter" of Apple and Apple products in two large MS Windows dominated companies over the last 25 plus years. By putting products such as Numbers on the market to "business" users and then letting them discover things like Number's find and replace capabilities does a disservice to the entire family of Apple products in the business marketplace.
    If the problem is with copyright problems with MS Excell, tell us. Don't keep telling us about elegant non functional software!

  • Numbers and excel docs

    I downloaded a bunch of items from apple as normal downloads, and discovered that my excel had been replaced with numbers. I was making changes to an excel document in numbers apparently and when I tried to save the changes i couldn't without buying iworks or subscribing to a trial of iwork. No one I'm currently working with has iwork (or macs) so I'm guessing that they will not be able to use my documents, Yes? Also, I was unable to save my work (2 hours worth) to excel either, because now my computer says that excel is no longer available. Help.

    Hi nyzonegirl,
    Welcome to Numbers discussions.
    Yvan is correct; nothing neither in iWork nor any Mac application will remove MS Office—Excel. If you were using Numbers there is a 30 trial for it, after 30 days it stops working or one purchases it. So it seems that the Excel work sheet you were using may have opened in Numbers not your Excel—a file association thingy.
    Find on your HDD the Excel .XLS file, click on it once to highlight it. Now click File > Get Info, down the list it will read Open with:, change it to Excel (it may read Numbers). You'll have the choice to have all like files open in Excel as well.
    Yes you're correct, Windows users won't be able to open Numbers files so if you decide to purchase iWork you'll need to do as Yvan suggested, Export to Excel.
    As the need arises I use Excel, however, for my personal use 100% of the time I use Numbers. When I know Functions are the same I'll use Numbers then Export to Excel for Windows users.
    Hope this helps you. Do let us know the outcome.
    Sincerely,
    RicD

  • Is anyone having trouble using parenthesis to show negative numbers in excel after upgrading to Yosemite?

    Since upgrading to Yosemite, I can no longer reflect negative numbers with parenthesis using excel.  All of my existing spreadsheets also no longer show parenthesis, creating formatting problems.  Is anyone else experiencing this and is there a solution?

    I suggest you post your question to Microsofts own forums for their Mac software as it's their product you're having issues with

  • Why can I no longer export images in Numbers to Excel?

    Numbers 3.2.2
    MacBook Air 1.3GHz i5; Memory 4Gb 1600MHz DDR3
    OS X updated 24 September 2014
    In previous versions I have been able to export images within the Numbers file to and  Excel file.  I was able to do this up to three weeks ago!
    Now when I export to Excel the Images are being removed.  This is extremely inconvenient as I use this product to generate reports to my executives across Asia and this is no longer possible with this product.  Every other member uses Excel for this report and I am not on the outside, unable to participate fully in the conversations or modifications to critical performance reports!
    Would you please advise how I can now continue to use Numbers to:
         a.  Generate this report type
         b.  Review reports provided to me
         c.  Update and return reports provided for review and contributions?
    Thank you
    Dean Turner OAM

    Dean,
    1) I suggest if your job depends on a particular tool you that tool.  My suggestion is to purchase Excel and use the same tool as everyone else.  For times then you need not share with other use Excel.
    2)  I dropped an image in a Numbers file then exported to excel using the menu item "File > Export To > Excel..." then opened the file in LibreOffice (a free office clone).  That worked fine.  So I cannot confirm your reported problem.  Can you share what version of Numbers you are using?  Have you tried restarting your computer? What about have your tried a simple test where you create a new document, then drop a picture into that file and then export to excel?  Maybe the document you are using is corrupt.

  • Issue in displaying numbers in Excel

    Hi,
    I am converting my report output to XLS format using the CL_BCS class. I am converting my string into binary content and adding it as a xls attachement.
          cl_bcs_convert=>string_to_solix(
            EXPORTING
              iv_string   = lv_string
              iv_codepage = '4103'
              iv_add_bom  = 'X'
            IMPORTING
              et_solix  = binary_content
              ev_size   = size ).
    *add attachment
    document->add_attachment(
            i_attachment_type    = 'xls'
            i_attachment_subject = 'Output'
            i_attachment_size    = size
            i_att_content_hex    = binary_content ).
    I am able to email the generated excel file but if my column hold numbers with more digtis (ie, 1234567891234 , displayed as 1.23457E+12), its getting displayed as exponent format.
    pl guide me on handling this im my program itself.
    Regards,
    BG

    Hi
    I tried using your example and also added some more digits to it and I realised the error works this way - if it is a 13 digit number 1234567891234
    The error will be 1.23457E+12 and similarly anything bigger like say 15 digit will have 14 after the plus.
    I changed the formatting to number and it worked. So  I believe this can be reported as a bug in Excel.
