NVidia on Macbook Pro Retina 2.0 GHz

Hey everyone,
I recently bought a Macbook Pro Retina 2.0 GHz which I thought would be sufficient for almost anything. After all the processor would tune up to 3.2 GHz if needed.
Now I wanted to try something heavy on the graphics and I wondered why the Macbook handled it so problemeticaly. It seems that the 2.0 GHz variant does not have the nvidia graphics chip. Can anyone confirm that?
If I had known this prior to buying it then I would have spent a few more bucks to get the 2.3 GHz variant!
Is there any way to get the additional nvidia chip? Is there any way to get my machine to Apple and have it upgraded? If this is true and I am not mistaken about not having the nvidia then I am so mad... Why didn't they made this more clear? Why was there no warning, saying: Yes, you can buy the 2.0 GHz variant but you will miss [number of things]".

Mmmh, I think I got it now... My Macbook is already upgraded on certain points (like ssd or ram). So the difference to the model with the nvidia card is 100$. But, and here is the problem, I didn't see the difference in the text between the two models on http://store.apple.com/us/buy-mac/macbook-pro. As far as I can see this is the only place where I am informed that I am missing the nvidia card when I'm choosing the left model. And as far as I can see I would have missed the nvidia card if I picked the left model and then upgraded to the specs of the right model, too.
Honestly, I can't figure out what Apple is doing there. Why can't they just tell me: Hey, you CAN choose that model but you will miss this and this and that.
So, if I am understanding you correctly: There is no way for me to get that nvidia card, apart from buying a completely new macbook?

It's beta open source software so I'm not surprised. It does't look to be too active a project, so I don't know if it will help or not but you might be maybe better off posting a bug report on their Sourceforge page here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/kompozer/

  • MacBook Pro Retina 2.3 GHz vs. 2.6/2.7 GHz for AVID Video/Audio Production

    Hi,
I am finally gearing up for my MacBook Pro purchase come early August for school. Although I have considered value powerhouse computers like Sager Notebooks, I am fairly certain I'm going to go with my gut and get the Mac. Although Google has undoubtedly been my friend, I have not found a satisfactory forum/discussion about my exact situation, so I'm hoping for some much needed suggestion.
    I will be installing:
AVID Media Composer 6 http://www.avid.com/US/products/media-composer#specifications and
    AVID Pro Tools 10 http://www.avid.com/US/products/pro-tools-software#Tech-Specifications0
Obviously, I plan on doing HD video editing, and high quality audio processing/editing. I am a full time student with a part time job and honestly do not have all the money in the world... But I want to make this Mac purchase a worthwhile investment, not just a purchase I will regret not being 100% sure about in the future
So, my question is, would the different clock speeds (2.3/2.6/2.7) truly make a significant difference in what I'm doing, how much difference, and which one would you recommend?
Note: I will upgrade the memory to 16GB either way.
Thank you all, I'm really excited to hear from you.
    Austin

I agree with Bimmer - the 2.6Ghz clock speed is exactly what you need for video editing. And with the non-Retina display, you can upgrade to 16GBs yourself.
I also agree with Bimmer on the SSD front. You can use a fast USB 3.0 external to store your projects (and perhaps use as scratch space - although if you keep the SSD pretty clean, it would be much faster). There are a wealth of SSDs out there for MacBook Pros now - anywhere from $350-800. Some are a little faster than others but I don't know that you'd actually notice the difference in real-world use. Bimmer was telling me about the Sandisk Extreme 480GB last night - seems to have some awfully fast clock speeds and right around $350. The Samsung 830 series gets consistently high marks. I have a Crucial m4 512GB with which I am pleased. It seems that more MacBook Pros have Crucial m4 series drives than most other brands and users are happy with them - and Crucial has great tech support for Macs which is something I appreciate.
So I would build into the cost of the computer both the extra RAM and a SSD and a fast external drive (or two - one to use as a Time Machine backup). You won't break the bank and you're obviously going to want a machine that does what you need to do quickly.
Just one more thing - if you can afford it, I'd go with the NVIDIA card with 1 GB of VRAM. That's twice the size as the stock 512k VRAM. It would just make things that much faster. Oh, and I would spend the extra $100 for the HD antiglare option - a little bit more screen res and the antiglare looks wonderful to me.
Good luck - remember that you can always call back here should you have any questions: both before and after your purchase...

  • Faulty temperature sensors on Macbook Pro Retina??

I got a Macbook Pro Retina 2.7 GHz Intel Core i7 16GB ram with solid state driving running 10.8.2 about 3 weeks ago and for the most part it's run quiet, even when I would use it on my lap and it would get a little hot, the fans never got really fast. Last night I ran Folding@Home for the first time and the fans got really loud. Now, this didn't surprise me as I was using a program that probably uses a lot of the CPU. I shut down and left my machine off all night. This morning the fans turned on ~15 seconds after startup. No programs running, and the computer is on a cool surface and is cool to the touch, but the fans are going crazy. So and reset the SMC (at least I think I did, shut down, power cable in, held contro, option, l-shift and power for at least 10 seconds, although nothing happened that indicated that there was a reset). Problem persists. Computer is COOL, fans start up almost immediately. So I installed SMC fan control to monitor my temperature. Upon startup it read at room temp, then spikes up to 200 F and the fans jump up to ~4500 RPM. Now, there is NO WAY that my machine is that hot right when I start it up, it's completely cool to the touch and has been sitting on a marble table in a cool room. Has anybody else been having problems like this?

thanks for the reply. I ran the AHT by rebooting and holding D. While a ran the test there was no fan noise. The test found no probems. After restart the fans speed up again. Since my last post I've installed the iStat widget. My temperature (F) and fan speed readout is as follows:
    HD: Macintosh... 112
    CPU/ Heatsink     122
    Airport Card          121
    Enclosure Base     92
    Enclosure Base 2     92
    Enclosure Base 3     85
    GPU                       140

    Right Fan          ~5500 RPM
    Left Fan               ~5900 RPM

  • Macbook pro retina freezing up on safari

MacBook Pro Retina 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 recently upgraded to Yosemite. Photos and video are not displaying properly - they appear as a blank white box or a white box with smudgy black marks.  Links are not always connecting and sometimes my Mac just freezes and then shuts down. It is not a constant problem but I'd appreciate knowing if anyone else is experiencing this and has a solution. This is happening on sites such as CNN

In what apps are videos and photos not showing?
By links do you mean links that open a browser?
After reboot from the next shutdown do yo see a kernel panic message? If so then log the panic and post it here

Otherwise not the time the freeze happened and after rebooting open the Console app in Finder>Applications>Utilities and look for suspicious log entries at that time and post them here

  • Best preference settings for MacBook Pro Retina Mid 2012 with 2.7 Ghz Core i7 processor 16GB memory Nvidia GeForce GT 650M 1024MB processor

    (using latest AE CC2014)
I have a MacBook Pro Retina Mid 2012 with 2.7 Ghz Core i7 processor 16GB memory Nvidia GeForce GT 650M 1024MB processor, doing some heavy AE renderings and just realized that this machine says it has 8 Cores? I'm had not yet turned on Multprocessing in Preferences Should I be?
Should I leave 1 or 2 cores for other applications?
RAM allocation per background CPU is defaulted set to 3GB
Also for Adobe Media Encoder: in preferences under Video Rendering /Rendere it is set at Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration (OpenCL) is that the best config for this computer?

    How much ram?
The best settings depend on what you are working on. Here are mine for a nearly identical system:
It's usually best to keep memory blocks in 4GB blocks. If my workflow is more in other apps I'll switch out other apps to 8 gb if things start to slow down. Because of my usual project settings I keep MP turned off on this machine, but for some projects I'll turn it on. If you decide to experiment to MP then keep an eye on the Actual CPU's that will be used and make sure the numbers add up. Other applications and Actual Cores should add up the the total in your system.

  • NVIDIA issue on MacBook Pro retina 15 (bootcamp)

    hello guys! merry christmas everybody
i have such problem: i bought MacBook Pro retina 15, when i came home i installed windows 7 thru bootcamp, after that i decided to check how many points of perfomance do i have, (in windows you can see that in computer - system properties) and i was 7.2
my games worked amazing on highest level of perfomance, i didn't see such performance anywhere.
10 days later i decided to play, and when the game started it was so bad, everythings hanged very much!! i decided to see what happend to my system and i saw this
and i can't do anything! i returned my mac to the store where i have bought it and they gave me a new one, but after 10 days the same thing happend to a new one. i don't think that it brokes maybe it's some problem which can be solved? maybe i can change something in stting or via terminal? as i think something wrong with nvidia card, seems like mac doesn't change video cards from intel to nvidia when a hard programm is started
    help me please!!

The Retina models are full of flaws. You have found one of them. For some reason the discrete graphic card is being shut off in Windows and you are now using the built in Intel HD Graphics 4000. Why I have no idea.

  • MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014) -- Enable NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M ?

    Hi
I got a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014) running on Yosemite.
I wonder how is possible to enable the NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M card?
I am looking around but I cannot find documentation explaining about how to enable the other video card.
    Any tips/help?
    Thanks

  • Macbook Pro Retina - nVidia card does not work correctly

    Hi,
having a MacBook Pro Retina. It ran fine till yeasterday when I fired up a game which was laggy and it was running fine before. It took me several hours to find where the problem is and it seems to me that the nVidia dicrete card is not working. But strangely not working. I installed gfxCardStatus to see whether the card is being switched to run the game and it actually is. But the performance is the same as running it on an internal Intel. I took another test and downloaded CINEBENCH to see the differences and sadly the results are the same if I switch to nVidia or to Intel and run the benchmark.
Obviously something is not right here. It happened over night. Before it worked corectly. I do not remember installing something that day/night that could have broken it (in case it is a SW problem). Only one thing comes to my mind - Apple Java update. But I tried to uninstall it and got the same result. I did try to restart several times. But otherwise there is no visible flaw, e.g. flickering or black screen when swithech do nVidia - nothing. gfxCardStatus shows that the system switches the card and I notice no change. Only in heavy load it is obvious that it is slow (slower than it was).
Is there a way to see if the nVidia card is working? I suspect that even if the system is trying to switch to a discreet card it still runs on the Intel in reality. Any way how to distinguish this rather than to rely on gfxCardStatus? Any log that would make this clear? Any test I can run (Apple HW test shows "no problem detected")?
    Many thanks for hints.

To show what I am talkin about I did another test. I downloaded and ran LuxMark. There it is possible to test CPU and GPU separately on a same benchmark scene. FIrst I let the system switch to nvidia and did the test:
Then I manually switched to Intel/CPU in gfxCardStatus and also selected CPU in the LuxMark and did the same test. The result is:
You see? How it is possible that in OpenCL computation CPU with internal graphic card is even faster then the descreet one? This is what I am experiencing now and cannot figure out where the problem lies.
Would the Apple HW test discover a dead nvidia card? Because nothing shows that the card is dead but as you can see it is not performing as it should.

Macbook Pro Retina display 15 inch 2.6 Ghz i7 model - what happened to this model ? just brought this computer 4 months back and suddently this model disappeared? also the price on this one is equivalent to another higher model with 2.7 Ghz and 16 GB memory ?

Apple removed some Retina MacBooks Pro and started selling other ones with slightly better hardware last week. If you have this MacBook, you can continue using it because, although Apple has upgraded the hardware, changes aren't big compared to your MacBook Pro model
