OATM conversion - should I use unform or auto allocated extents

Hi, as part of an 11i to R12 E-Biz upgrade, I am migrating to the OATM model of tablespaces. One issue I am not sure about is whether to create the new OATM tablespaces so that they use Uniform Extents or whether I should set them to use Auto Allocate. I appreciate that some folk believe Auto Allocate can in the long run lead to freespace fragmentation. However I have not seen any recommendation from Oracle in any of the upgrade documentation as to which method of extent allocation to use.
Q1. Any ideas on which is the recommended / better / wiser extent allocation method to use ?
Q2. Are the concerns around free space fragmentation with the Auto Allocate method really likely ?
Also when I ran the Sizing Report in the OATM migration utility against my existing non OATM 11i tablespaces to predict the space I required for the migration, I got very different results / predictions !
For Uniform Extent Allocation I got the following prediction
Required 20% buffer Current
======= ======= =====
Total(in KB): 83,552,256 100,261,687 31,653,400
For Auto Allocate I got the following prediction
Required 20% buffer Current
======= ======= =====
Total(in KB): 29,842,048 35,809,437 31,653,400
Q3. Any idea why there is such a large variation between the predicted figures for both methods ?
any insight or shared thoughts greatly appreciated,
Jim

Thanks Hussein,
The notes indicate that the recommendation for OATM is Uniform Extnts of 128 Kb. However it caveats that with the statement "if that suits your database". How are you meant to pre-determine what extent size suits your current data / database ?
Also when I ran the pre-sizing report in the OATM migration utility I got vastly different space predictions ( see below ) when proposing to use Uniform Extent Allocation ( of 128 Kb ) and Auto Allocate. Do you know why there should be such a large difference in the figures ( especially as the recommended Unform Extent allocation is so much larger ! )
For Uniform Extent Allocation
==================
Required 20% buffer Current
Total(in KB): 83,552,256 100,261,687 31,653,400
For Auto Allocation
============
Required 20% buffer Current
Total(in KB): 29,842,048 35,809,437 31,663,600

iMac Sleep Problem Waking - Screen Black & Pixelization
Have a new BTO 27" iMac I received a couple of weeks ago. Of course it is running Lion 10.7....
I am having a screen problem "waking" my iMac. (I also have this problem randomly on my MB Air - mid 2011 model)
After the iMac is in true sleep mode
(I have it set to enter a password after sleep mode)
    Screen is blank/off
I "wiggle" my mouse or trackpad
Screen is still blank (sometimes it may display my screen saver, but the screensaver is frozen)
If I start moving the mouse or trackpad, it starts "un painting" the black screen. You can see whatever is supposed to be on the screen, such as the logon "button".
It is really wierd. Like a black "overlay" is painted on the resume from sleep screen. As I move my mouse or trackpad, it is basically erasing the black, to show what is underneath. Each movement of the mouse, erases a small black square.
I usually move my mouse around the middle of the screen to uncover the logon button. Press the logon button. The screen magically reappears as normal. I enter my password and system logs back on normally.
It only seems to be when the iMac is in really deep sleep mode. If the screen is just blank for an hour or so. I move the mouse/trackpad, and the logon screen is immediately displayed normally.
    Any thoughts or recommendations?
    Thanks to all in advance.

    Still experimenting.
If certain programs are running (ie Firefox), then I don't have a problem coming out of deep sleep. It gives me a message when I reenter my password, that Firefox prevented the system from logging off.
Does that additional information help? It is a really annoying problem. And since I have it on my MBA, I am concerned it is more widespread. Does anyone else have this issue?

Black Screen and "Erasure" with Mouse.
I am having this same problem. I am using the Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2, not using a screen saver, and it happens sporadically upon trying to wake my iMac from sleep mode. The screen is black, and as you move the mouse over the screen, it "erases" the black, like the opposite of a blackboard, to reveal the login name and picture underneath. After that everything works fine. There is no pattern to this that I can discern (e.g. - happens every fifth time, only happens when a program isn't running etc.). It appears random, but is uber annoying, and behaves like a virus. I have Norton Antivirus, and it updates daily, and upon scanning states no virus is found. I also do system scan with MacKeeper, and it scans, says system is excellent. Something is definitely going on, I just wish I knew what it was. If anyone has any knowledge of this, any solution or insight would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

That's because there are no Mac OS X viruses. You should uninstall Norton. You don't need 3rd party antivirus apps to protect your Mac from malware. Macs are not immune to malware, but no true viruses exist in the wild that can run on Mac OS X, and there never have been any since it was released 10 years ago. The only malware in the wild that can affect Mac OS X is a handful of trojans, which can be easily avoided with some basic education, common sense and care in what software you install. Also, Mac OS X Snow Leopard and Lion have anti-malware protection built in, further reducing the need for 3rd party antivirus apps.

You don't need MacKeeper, either. You really don't need "cleaner" or "maintenance" apps to keep your Mac running well, and some of these apps can do more harm than good. Most only remove files/folders or unused languages or architectures, which does nothing more than free up some drive space. It will not make your Mac run faster or more efficiently, since having stuff stored on a drive does not impact performance, unless you're running out of drive space.
Mac OS X does a good job of taking care of itself, without the need for 3rd party software.
Your problem, and the OP's is a graphics problem, likely having to do with the screensaver, not a malware problem.

Norton Antivirus, and what does it mean?
I suppose one reason I developed a concern that there was more here than meets the proverbial eye, so to speak was a message that I have received through Norton on multiple occasions. The last message of similar stated messages reads as follows (Norton Antivirus 2.2.1 (5) ): "Vulnerability blocked, December 13th, 2011, 8:57 P.M. When I click on "View Recent Activities", a window is opened that is titled "Activity Log." There, four columns are listed, titled from left to right "Date", "Event Type", "Result", and "Details." Under the December 13th episode, It lists "Portscan" under Event type, "Result" gives an IP Address (192.168.x.xxx), and "Incoming" under details.
I am admittedly a neophyte in the Mac world, having switched over from Windows 7 to Mac recently, but am intent on educating myself to the not-so-subtle differences. The above information that Norton displayed would lead one to believe that their antivirus software is protecting my iMac, and that its subsequent removal would have perhaps disastrous results ( i.e. - my iMac would be susceptible to said "Vulnerability", whatever it is, and that "Incoming would NOT be blocked). I had a conversation with Norton because previously, every time the stated "Vulnerability" attempted access, I was interrupted by a pop-up screen informing me of this. The Norton representative was able to turn off the pop-up screen notification, but stated that it would continue to log episodes of the "Vulnerability" when it attempted to portscan and access. So am I to understand that uninstalling Norton would leave my computer no less vulnerable to this vulnerability? It is confusing to me.
Furthermore, I suppose I did wonder if this vulnerability threat had anything to do with the issue of the black screen erasure with the mouse. I will attempt to post a picture of the screen as it was being erased with the mouse, and perhaps a short movie as well. As previously stated, I do not have a screen saver enabled. Thank you for your input, any information is helpful to me! _

    Ditto & FYI Workaround
    UncHeel...
Thanks for posting the picture. It is same as my iMac problem. On my iMac, it happens 100% of the time. On my MBA, it happens randomly like yours.
I began to notice if certain programs were running, when it went into screen saver and sleep mode, this didn't happen. And when I woke it up, I got a message that said "could not be logged off due to Firefox or Sketchbook Pro, etc. So that got me to thinking. So....
Over the weekend, I disabled "logoff after xx minutes of activity" in system preferences. That seems to fix the issue. I still have it set to require a password after the screen saver/sleep mode kicks it. But I disabled the logoff toggle.
Still not sure what this is an issue, but seems to be a work around. I just want to make sure my iMac is still going into sleep with these new settings. Including the monitor sleep.
Any thoughts based on this new information?
    Thanks again

You have to remember that many antivirus apps consider cookies to be a "vulnerability" or "threat", when they're not. The only malware in the wild that can affect Mac OS X requires the user to actively install it. As long as a user is reasonably careful about where they get software, there is no need for 3rd party antivirus apps to protect Mac OS X from malware. Just make sure your firewall is enabled (System Preferences > Security > Firewall), and disable Java in your browser (Safari > Preferences > Security > Enable Java (uncheck))

You can let it sleep without logging off. That way, your apps/documents are still open when you wake it up, rather than having to relaunch apps and reopen documents. Recovery from sleep is much faster than from logging off.

I have had the same problem on my mid-2010 iMac since upgrading to Lion and it's been driving me nuts. The relation to automatic Logoff makes sense to me now that I look at my settings. The logoff was occurring after sleep and it's the only thing I haven't tried yet. I had previously thought it was related to Sleep but it never occurs if I force it to sleep. It only occurs after the system was left unattended and went through it's normal steps of screensaver then sleep. I'll try disabling the automatic Logoff and see if it fixes the problem for me too.

I can only declare partial success with unpicking "logoff after xx". It solved the pixelated screen issue but now the computer is not sleeping. I guess I'll have to uncheck file sharing now.

    Any updates?
Just wanted to see if there had been any changes since the last posting in this thread. I'm experiencing the same issue as OP on my 2011 13" MacBook Air w/ OS X 10.7.3, as well as on my parents' mid-2010 iMac (running OS X 10.7.2).
I can't seem to pin down the cause and have tried the steps suggested previously. Thanks!

Still having the same issue here as well.
Have any of you tried a clean install of OSX?
Before I try a full reinstall I did an install on a external drive with no aps, just the bare install and I could not replicate the issue.
I continue to question if this is a graphics card firmware issue or and OS issue.
A reinstall (overlay) of the OS did not resolve the issue.
I have screen shots as follows:
    1) Paint pixels on screen

    Having the same issue
I have four MacBooks and a MacBook Air. I am seeing this issue on two MacBooks both running Lion 10.7.3. One is a newer i5 MacBook the other is an early 2010. The only common denominator I can think of is they are both set up with Parental Controls and they are set to logoff after X amount of time. The other MacBooks don't have this "pixel painting to revel the login screen issue" I also don't see it on our iMacs or the MacMini. Only the two with the issue are set to auto logoff. So the above poster is most likely on to something. I will give it a try by turning off the auto logoff on the two MacBooks in question. If that solves the problem then I will assume its a bug that needs to be addressed.

wchp - Thank you for following up and posting the screenshots. They match exactly what I was experiencing (and what UNCHeelYeah reported previously). I can confirm that I experienced the issue even following a clean reinstall of Snow Leopard on my MacBook Air (13-inch, Mid 2011).
jrobin - "I will give it a try by turning off the auto logoff on the two MacBooks in question. If that solves the problem then I will assume its a bug that needs to be addressed."
Good thinking! Thanks for taking the time to test with your machines. This will help provide further validation of what gswilder (OP) tried as well in reply #6. Interesting about Parental Controls, too.
    Side note:
Since I recently joined the Apple Developers program, I did a clean install of SL on my MBA then upgraded via the App Store to Mountain Lion to "kick-the-tires" if you will. Interestingly, I've not yet experienced any issue related to waking from sleep with a black screen and pixilation, even while running all the same apps I had previously. I'll report here (and file a bug report with Apple) if I do see this issue pop-up in ML. I'll be reinstalling SL in a few weeks and will report back if/when the black screen and pixelation issue reappears. I'll be sure to note the applications left running at the time the computer went to sleep.

I have experienced the same issue with my brand new MBA Late 2011.
I recently found out that this only happens when DISPLAY is set to go to sleep minutes before the "Log out after X minutes of inactivity". I had "Display sleep" option set to 5 minutes and "Log out after 10 minutes of inactivity" and this causes the display to go to sleep first (screen goes black) and then, 5 minutes later, it logs out.
If "Display sleep" is off and "Log out after X minutes of inactivity" is on, the issue does not replicate. So Im thinking it has something to do with the screen being black at the moment it logs out. Can you try and replicate that?
    Thanks

Just tested this premise and yes, you are correct.
IF: Screen saver ON after 5m AND require password immediately AND Sleep (Display) after 30m AND Logout after 60m I am able to reproduce the problem.
IF: Screen Saver ON after 5m AND require password immediately AND Sleep (Display) after 30m AND Logut after xx NOT enabled, problem goes away
IF: Screen Saver ON after 5m AND require password immediately AND Sleep (Display) OFF AND Logut after 60M enabled, problem goes away
    So on my machine (iMac 27, 3.4/i7, 16GB/1333, Radeon 6970m/2048MB, OSX 10.7.3
It would appear that if I am running Monitor Sleep and it kicks in prior to LogOff then I am able to reproduce this artifact. Only Display sleep with immediate login OR Loguot should be used but not both.
The only other thing to test is is I leave display sleep on, and screen saver on but with NO immediate password and enable logoff if the problem goes away.
    Testing for another day.
I have linked this entire thread to a Apple support ticket and will report back on Apples response

Thank you so much wchp, this is brilliant. I have had this annoying problem for a long time. I eventually rang Mac support, they did not know how to fix the problem as you have suggested so they instigated many hardware replacements which eventually left my iMac severely crippled. They eventually replaced it with the latest model. But I spent two months working with a disabled computer which really interfere with my work.
Your solution appears to have solved my problem, at least so far, but I am hopeful that it is a permanent fix. I hope that your suggestions are taken up by Apple support. This may solve many users problems and avoid Apple making expensive fixes that don't actually work.
I thought that the new iMac would not have the 'Wake up from sleep by painting in the login window' problem but it did, this really annoyed me. Anyway now the problem appears to be solved, it's not I will repost and keep working on it. Thanks again.

  • Issue with PR conversion to PO using ME59 withqty of similar line items

    Hi All,
I'm having an issue with PR conversion to PO using ME59
I have a PR with the following line items with all same details except quantity
    ex 1
Mat  Qty  Unit Plant   St Loc
    M1   1    EA   P1      S1
    M1   29   EA   P1      S1
The PR brings in the Unit automatically
EA is Base Unit Of Measure -Material Master
BT is Order Unit           -Material Master
    Conversion
    30 EA = 1BT
When i convert this PR to PO using ME59N then i see 2 lines items
    M1   1   BT
    M2   1   BT
Its doubling the qty (2 BT = 60 EA)
    ex 2
Mat  Qty  Unit Plant   St Loc
    M1   1    EA   P1      S1
    M1   2    EA   P1      S1
    M1   27   EA   P1      S1
The PR brings in the Unit automatically
EA is Base Unit Of Measure -Material Master
BT is Order Unit           -Material Master
    Conversion
    30 EA = 1BT
When i convert this PR to PO using ME59N then i see 2 lines items
    M1   1   BT
    M1   1   BT
    M1   1   BT
    Its 3 times no
    PR Qty = 30 EA
    PO qty = 3  BT = 90 EA
I guess during conversion to PO
It sees PR Line item 1 and looks for another line items with similar fields ( in our case it sees line 2 in ex 1 and 2 and 3 in ex 2)
i adds the qty 1 and 29 in ex1 and converts the total 30 each to 1 BT and when it moves to 2 line it see item1 and again creates 1BT but the line item 2 was already considered and it should be ignored
Similarly if you see ex2 then it creates 3 limes with 1 BT each
Let me know how to resolve this issue
    Thanks

As for std SAP ME59N - make sure there is not rounding value is activated in the Material master as well as info record
If this is not the case than check any custom code is activated for ME59N
becuase generally in many compnay when they use ME59n they don't want the same material from diff PR to create the diff line item in the PO so using the custom logic in the user exist they trick the code
it might be the case for you where you have issue.

  • PR to PO conversion should not happen in case of expired pricing condition in Info Record

    Hi All,
Issue – PR to PO conversion should not happen in case of expired pricing condition in Info Record.
In case of creation of PR/ PO, the Price is pulled out from the Info Record of the material. In our case if the Price in the Info Record is expired, it should give the Error Message & should pick the Price from the last PO created for the same combination of Plant, Vendor, Company code.
Request you to please let us know if there is any way out.
    Regards,
    Karthick.V

    Hi,
As per your requirement if info record price is not valid and in auto PO creation from PR, price should get picked from last PO, this is standard behavior and it will happen.
If you check in customization MM - Purchasing - Environment Data - Define Default Values for Buyers -Settings for default values
Default values if you check under price adoption , it has to be Always copy ( copying of conditions from last PO) . Pls check

  • What XA JDBC driver should I use with Oracle 8i 8.1.6

I need to use an XA JDBC driver for Oracle 8i 8.1.6. I am using the driver in
a ConnectionPool in a TxDataSource for use by some entity beans using EJB 2.0.
I'm running WebLogic Server 6.0 sp2, EJB 2.0, Java 2 SDK 1.3.1 Server VM, Solaris
    2.7, and Oracle 8i 8.1.6.
I know of three different Oracle XA drivers: WebLogic jDriver for Oracle XA, Oracle
OCI type 2 driver XA, and Oracle Thin tyoe 2 XA. Are there any other drivers
that I can use for Oracle 8.1.6? Which driver and which version should I use?
For example, can I use the Oracle 8.1.7 JDBC drivers with the Oracle 8.1.6 server,
or would the Oracle 9i drivers work with the Oracle 8i server? Which drivers
are faster, and which support more features? I assume that I should not use the
type 4 driver since I am not using an applet, but I don't know if there are bugs
in the OCI C library for Solaris or in the JDBC drivers that use it that prevent
XA from woking. Which version of the Oracle C OCI library should I use if I use
    a type 2 driver?
    Thanks,

    Hi,
I think you can't use the 8.1.6 thin driver for XA, you would have to
use the OCI driver or 2PC-enable your datasource. AFAIK this has been
    changed for 8.1.7

Conversation: What XA JDBC driver should I use with Oracle 8i 8.1.6
Subject: Re: What XA JDBC driver should I use with Oracle 8i 8.1.6
I've asked this question before. This is the reply from Joe
    Weinstein:
For reliability and JDBC 2.0 compliance, I recommend the
    Oracle thin driver.
If not that driver, you should verify that a type-2 driver
    actually does
deliver better performance, but then I would not have a
    strong preference
between their type-2 and ours. Theirs may be faster, and JDBC
    2.0 compliant.
Both are succeptible to OCI bugs, some of which only they can
    fix, but we
    listen.

I need to use an XA JDBC driver for Oracle 8i 8.1.6. I am using thedriver in
a ConnectionPool in a TxDataSource for use by some entity beans usingEJB 2.0.
    I'm running WebLogic Server 6.0 sp2, EJB 2.0, Java 2 SDK 1.3.1 ServerVM, Solaris
    2.7, and Oracle 8i 8.1.6.
I know of three different Oracle XA drivers: WebLogic jDriver forOracle XA, Oracle
OCI type 2 driver XA, and Oracle Thin tyoe 2 XA. Are there any otherdrivers
that I can use for Oracle 8.1.6? Which driver and which versionshould I use?
For example, can I use the Oracle 8.1.7 JDBC drivers with the Oracle8.1.6 server,
or would the Oracle 9i drivers work with the Oracle 8i server? Whichdrivers
are faster, and which support more features? I assume that I shouldnot use the
type 4 driver since I am not using an applet, but I don't know ifthere are bugs
in the OCI C library for Solaris or in the JDBC drivers that use itthat prevent
XA from woking. Which version of the Oracle C OCI library should Iuse if I use
    a type 2 driver?
    Thanks,

  • What program should I use and various??

    Hi friends,
    I have two questions:
    1) So I have finished my project...how do I fit it onto one dvd? Quicktime conversion??
    2) What program should I use to burn to dvd? I have a macbook.
    3) How do I make chapters on the dvd??
Thank you so much for assisting

    1. Export a QuickTime Movie. Do NOT use QT Conversion. Import the resulting QuickTime file into the DVD creation program. Don't worry about file size at this point. The DVD authoring application will compress and encode. You can fit about two hours of video on a single-layer DVD.
    2. The simplest method is to use iDVD which probably came with the MacBook.
    3. Playing the FCE Timeline, press M twice, name the chapter if you wish and click the Add Chapter Marker button in the resulting window. Then when you export, make sure to choose to include Chapter markers in the Export window. Within iDVD, I think you can also set iDVD to include a chapter marker at set intervals, but not at specific points.
Not to be snarky, but that seems like three questions...
    Good luck.

  • Should I use default Raw or convert to DNG?

    Hello,
I have olympus SP570UZ and use LR 3. I'm not a professional photographer but do a lot of photography and shoot in raw. My question is should I use the default raw file for import/editing or should i convert to dng? does it effect editing capabilities and degrade the result when i convert to dng?
I work on laptop and it seems a lot slower in loading default raw files. Will this improve my overall work time and lower load on cpu and space, but my first priority is picture quality?
    Thank you.

Converting to DNG is really a matter of choice not necessity. If your camera is already supported by Lightroom / Camera Raw then there is little to be gained by converting the images to DNG at the beginning of your workflow. Many who champion DNG will keep their images in the camera vendors raw format until they've completed their edits and only then convert the final image to DNG.
In answer to other questions. Performance - DNG is not some magic bullet that will increase the performance of your family saloon into that of a Porsche. Space - The lossless compression used by DNG is more efficient than that used by the majority of other raw formats, but only saves space if you trash the originals after conversion. (Note - trashing your original raw files is not something that I would ever recommend let alone suggest.) Quality - There should be no difference in quality between the original raw file and the DNG version.
FWIW, DNG was originally proposed as standard "capture format" but as time has gone by and few camera vendors jumped on board Adobe's position has changed to "DNG is ideal as an archiving format". The latter is probably the less time consuming and more future proof approach. As mentioned above,it's also the approach adopted by many of those who champion the DNG format.
No doubt someone else will come along and add their tuppence worth for one or the other, but if previous threads on the same subject are any guide you'll still be left wondering. Try typing your original question into Google and see the mass of info and opinion that already exists. I can hear the sound of Hornets buzzing already.
Disclosure - I use DNG not raw throughout my workflow. This means that my thumbnails and previews accurately reflect the Adobe rendering in all of the applications "I" use. "I" don't use the camera vendors software (i.e. Canon DPP), so have no issues with the fact that it does not support DNG.

  • UOM Conversion changes where conversion is only used for reporting

I think this is a different situation than I've seen in other posts.
We have a UOM conversion from CS to POUND (i.e. 1 case = 30 pounds), and at some point may want to change it so that 1 case = 28 pounds. In our situation, all transactions are done at the CS (primary UOM) and the weight is only used in calculations to print on shipping documents. Is there any harm in just changing the 30 to 28 when that time comes? Again, there are no transactions that reference the weight, no PO's, no SO's, no financials, etc.
We also have a similar situation where a PALLET may contain 100 cases now, but in the future be reconfigured to contain 90 cases. Same idea, nothing is transacted in Pallets, and the conversion is only used in reporting. Seems like it would be OK to change that conversion without causing problems. Any thoughts?
    Thanks for your insights!
    Bill
    (Running r12.1.3 with OPM)

I think this is low risk - just make absolutely sure that the uom was not used for customer pricing, internal pricing, boms, on ASL, on price breaks, on quotes, on POs, on material transactions, wip moves etc.
As long as it was truly used just for reporting, you should be ok.

  • With my ipad should i use wifi or 3g?

I have an ipad 2 wifi + 3g. Should I use wifi when I am home or 3g. I get charged for my MB on 3g through my data plan, Do I get charged if I use my wifi at home?

The iPad will switch to WiFi if a WiFi signal is available.  Conversely, if a WiFi signal is not available, it will switch to 3g.  If you have a wireless network in your house, the iPad will use that first so there is no need to worry about MB charges, at least at home.

  • What format should I use for new  FCP slide show to DVD project?

I want to edit a slide show movie. I have all of the high resolution images. I plan on authoring the project to DVD 16:9 anamorphic with DVD SP. Later I would like to author to 1920 x 1080 HD on Blu-Ray. ( I can't afford Adobe BR authoring software at this time, I want to start with the DVD) I am looking for advice. I want the quality of DVD and future Blu-Ray to be best possible quality. I'm thinking there are two options I might use:
    1. Edit the FCP project in HD 1920 x 1080. Use Compressor to convert the sequence to 16:9 anamorphic for DVD SP input. I am thinking I will have the HD sequence ready for the Blu Ray in the future. I like this approach. Is the conversion possible with compressor? What exact format and frame rate should I use for the FCP project?
    2. Edit the FCP project in 16:9 Anamorphic. Compress for DVD SP input. I am not fond of this option. I don't look forward to making rectangular pixel images in Photoshop for one. That will be a lot of work for this project. I won't have an HD sequence ready for Blu Ray in future, I will have to start a new project from scratch to make the HD version.
Thanks in advance for any advice!

Edit in a 1920x1080/30p Pro Res sequence settings.
Export that to a self contained movie current settings, and use which ever SD DVD preset to encode for use in DVD SP.
The self contained movie can eventually be used in Adobe Encore for blu ray authoring.
But having "high resolution" images/photos means nothing in video.
1 dpi is sufficient at 1920x1080 unless you plan to pan and zoom, in which case double the pixel size, not the dpi.
300 dpi produces no better image than 1 dpi.

  • What setting should I use for YouTube?

I have a cannon HD camcorder and I shoot with Auto AVCHD SP wide. There are a half dozen options when I put my video on YouTube. I don't know what option I chose when I published my first two videos but the sharpness is better than that of my recent video. On my recent video I used Flash Video for YouTube (Wide Screen) Frame Rate 30. The other option, which perhaps I should have used, is High Definition Video for You Tube - 1920 by 1080 - Frame Rate 29.97. Many of the other options are for PAL which of course I do not use.
Please give me you thoughts on this because I intend to publish more videos on YouTube.

    Even YouTube themselves has advice:
    "Frame rates
Frame rates should match the source material. For example, content shot in 24fps should be encoded and uploaded at 24fps. Content recorded at 30fps should be uploaded at 30fps. Content shot in 720p60, should be uploaded at 720p60. Content at 1080i 60, should be deinterlaced, going from 60 interlaced fields per second to 30 progressive frames per second before uploading."

YouTube uses 16:9 aspect ratio players. If you are uploading a non-16:9 file, it will be processed and displayed correctly as well, with pillar boxes (black bars on the left and right) or letter boxes (black bars at the top and bottom) provided by the player. If you want to fit the player perfectly, encode at these resolutions:
    1080p: 1920x1080
    720p: 1280x720
    480p: 854x480
    360p: 640x360
    240p: 426x240
The YouTube player automatically adds black bars so that videos are displayed correctly without cropping or stretching, no matter the size of the video or the player.
For example, the player will automatically add pillarboxing to 4:3 videos in the new 16:9 widescreen player size. If the player is re-sized (i.e. when embedded on another website), the same process takes place so that 16:9 videos are letterboxed when the player is sized to 4:3. Similarly, anamorphic videos will be automatically letterboxed when shown in either 16:9 or 4:3 sized players. The player can only do this if the native aspect ratio of the video is maintained.

  • What type of hard disk should I use if I want to use it on mac and windows?

    Hey Forum,
I am using windows xp on my macbook (snow leopard). I came across some dealers who say that there are hard disks for mac only and for both mac and windows. So, I wanted to buy a hard disk so that I can use it both on mac and windows xp, so what type of hard disk should I use? Must I partition into 2?
or are there any harddisk in the market which is compatible for both mac and windows xp without screwing up the format(NTFS/Mac OS X Journaled)? Pls look into this matter and help me with it.
All of your replies and suggestions is much appreciated.
    Thank you.

Once in a very long while Apple will have customized firmware on drives, and it is possible to find SCSI/SAS or drives that are destined to be used with high end storage controllers.
But that is the exception that makes the rule.
SATA is SATA. Though.... there are now SATA III drives that don't work in XP, or that need a jumper, and Seagate and some drives have managed to deliver firmware that has caused trouble... and Apple has had to issue firmware updates to help compatibility....

  • I feel I must move beyond iMovie, what program should I use ?

I have been happily using iMovie and iDVD from versions 1 through 6.  iMovie 08 was so bad that Apple made iMovie 06 available as a free download for buyers of iMovie 08. The newer iMovies were better, but they seemed “dumbed down” (even for me).  Now, I am shocked and horrified to learn that the latest iMovie does not even set chapter markers!
So, I have continued to use iMovie 06 and iDVD 08 (they seem to work fine under OS 10.9.4).   iMovie 06 is now 8 years old!  I feel compelled to move forward. A lot of my work is DV.    In the past, most of my source material came out of S-Video.   I used a Canopus ADVC300 analog-to-digital converter that gave good results.   Going forward, I will have more video utilizing Component Video, or HDMI.
I am looking into 2 possibilities,  Adobe Premiere elements 12, or.........Final Cut Pro X.
The final result of my work is almost always a DVD.   It is hard for me to move from iMovie and iDVD.  I never read the manuals for either program, yet,  I was able to produce DVDs with nice menus and overall quality close to Hollywood.
It looks like Final Cut Pro X 'can' make a DVD directly without other software.  However, from what I have seen on YouTube the result is primitive compared to what iDVD was doing 10 years ago.
Adobe Premiere elements 12 can make nice DVDs and Blu-ray's directly.  I have no problem with using a separate program to make DVDs but I haven't got a clue how to do that with Final Cut Pro X.   I suppose I can still use iDVD, but now I'm back to using discontinued software.
I do not need any of the high-powered affects capability that Final Cut Pro X  possesses.  My “movie-making” is mostly confined to simple editing (the old iMovie 06 did all I needed).
Frankly, one motivation for choosing Final Cut Pro X, is the excellent, compassionate and understanding support that the kind people on this very forum provide.  So, what program should I use?

to turn perspective for a second by 180°:
Why do you want to switch to a new editor anyhow?
    • iM-a never did discs - that was iDVDs job = no big change in your workflow
    • iDVD is still working, and aside obsolete, complex and $$$$ DVDSP (part of obsolete FC/p) or Encore (part of Adobes CC rent package) your only option left to create disks on MacOS is indeed iDVD (...ok, there's Toast and Burn and some weird 'shareware'-stuff...)..
    • iMovie-b supports the new HDef formats (AVCHD) - you mentioned converters and DVDs = no HDef in use, in your habitat, correct?
    • if you don't need FCPX' bling-bling (I can't imagine that ) - why not using FCPX-lite = iMovie? 15$ ...
    • chapters could be done in iDVD - just to mention that ............
    • AP and FCPX are following very different concepts in usage - my personal preference is 200% on FCPX, … I was one of the loudest nay-sayers, when iM08 araised, meanwhile, FCPX is my dream!! AP (tested it) is way too complex, crowded, 'optionalized' and did I mention 'complex' for me. A bit like Windows vs. MacOS: 'everything goes' (incl. getting lost) vs. 'convenience' (incl. restrictions) ... After 2y of practice, I'm editing my weekly hobby-projects with 6-cam-Multicam, incl. tons of  custom graphics, slow-mow, effects (soccer games) in less than 2h ... awesome!
    summary:
    • why switching?
    • use iMovie10 + iDVD
    • Premiere (or Premiere Elements!) and FCPX are both avail as fee trial ... test  it - but you need iDVD anyhow
    • 'disks'  is a dwindling niché, for years!- consider to switch to 'other' distribution options
... what are 'chapters' anyhow??... (kid din'!)
