OBIEE in SQL Server

Hi,
I am trying to learn how to use OBIEE 11GR1 against SQL Server 2008R2 for reporting.
I am following this manual: http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E23943_01/bi.1111/e10539/c3_requrmnts.htm#BGBJAIDI
Just need to know what would be the process to start off. Would I create a schema (or equivalent in SQL Server) in my BI Administration?
I know RCU creates schema in Oracle & DB2 where you keep the views for reports (Physical Layer). Unsure if it works the same way in to link to SQL Server.
Thanks for help.

    Can OBIEE pull data from Sql server source? Please confirm.

    Of course yes. If OBIEE cannot pull data from multiple sources it must be considered incompetent on the BI market.
    Any source that can communicate with ODBC can be accessed by OBIEE.

    Hi Martin,
    I guess, I was not clear enough. Let me try again
    How Aggregate Persistence works in OBIEE?
    Once you are done choosing options in the Aggregate Persistence wizard, it generates an intelligent Query.
    What query is it?
    If you happen to understand the query, it is not like any ANSI standard SQL (I would say DDL) query. As you might have noticed there are no SQL Server datatypes, lengths, keys, constraints etc. This query can only be understood by the BI Server.
    How do I issue this query?
    Since the logical query could only be understood by BI Server, it has to be issued only to BI Server Engine using some tool viz NQCMD in this case.
    What does issuing this query using NQCMD do?
    The execution steps are as follows, the moment the query is issue via NQCMD
    Aggregate Persistent Wiz Generate Query ----- Issued to ---> NQCMD ----- Passes the logical query to ---> BI Server ----- Parses the query ---> Builds the corresponding physical DDL statements Issued --->To the Database --- If successful ---> .RPD is automatically updated with the aggregated sources etc.
    How do I pass the query to BI Server using NQCMD?
    The format of issuing this logical query to BI Server using NQCMD is
    nqcmd -d <Data Source Name> -u <Analytics UserId> -p <Password> -s <command> > output.log
    where
    <Data Source Name> : Is the DSN name which OBIPS uses to talk to Oracle BI Server. Yes, it's the very same DSN that can be found in InstanceConfig.xml
    <Analytics UserID> : Any user in obiee with admin privileges.
    <Password> : Password of the obiee UserId
    <Command> : Logical SQL Command which you already have handy.
    Hope I was good this time..

  • Unable to connect to SQL Server 2008 from OBIEE 11G(on 64 bit Linux box)

    We are unable to connect to connect to SQL Server 2008 from OBIEE 11G which is on 64 bit Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
    Infrastructure: OBIEE 11.1.1.5 64bit, on 64 bit Red Hat Linux Enterprise Linux 5.6 , MS SQL Server 2008 on 64 bit Microsoft Windows Server
    Issue Description: Unable to connect to SQL Server 2008 from OBIEE11G RPD
    Details: We are unable to connect to SQL Server 2008 from OBIEE which is on a 64 bit Linux box. We created the ODBC connection on Linux box to the SQL server. Whenever we try to import metadata it throws an error that says ‘Connection Failed’.
    Here are the steps we followed to setup the ODBC connection on Linux box.
    1) We updated the user.sh file with the LD_LIBRARY_PATH and LD_LIBRARY_PATH_64 values that point to $ORACLE_HOME/bifoundation/odbc/lib
    This is where we found the driver for SQL server SEmsss23.so.
    2) We updated the odbc.ini file with the entry for SQL server with the connection details
    SI_SQL_Server_DEV = SQL Server
    [SI_SQL_Server_DEV]
    Driver=/u001_OAS/Oracle/Middleware/Oracle_BI1/bifoundation/odbc/lib/SEmsss23.so
    Description=DataDirect 5.1 SQL Server Wire Protocol
    Address=10.230.216.52,54970
    AlternateServers=
    AnsiNPW=Yes
    ConnectionRetryCount=0
    ConnectionRetryDelay=3
    Database=SVBDW_NEW
    LoadBalancing=0
    LogonID=SIDatavalidation
    Password=~~~Password123
    QuoteID=No
    ReportCodePageConversionErrors=0
    3) We updated the IDENTIFIER_QUOTE_CHAR with single quotes instead of double quotes in the DB features of the RPD
    4) We updated the bash_profile file to point the ODBCINI variable to the path where the OBIEE odbc.ini file is present.
    Export ODBCINI=/u001_OAS/Oracle/Middleware/instances/instance1/bifoundation/OracleBIApplication/coreapplication/setup/odbc.ini
    The error in nqsserver.log file says “[nQSError: 16001] ODBC error state: IM002 code: 0 message: [DataDirect][ODBC lib] Data source name not found and no default driver specified.”

    Hi,
    Make sure SQL Configuration Manager make sure the TCP/IP enabled. please try below method
    Method 1
    Re Create a new ODBC & Oracle Bi Server DSN Configuration test it and use it in the connection pools.
    define your ODBC data source in your server where the BI Server is installed. Check your DB connections in your physical layer and make they are defined on your BI Server as well.
    Method 2:
    try using the complete TNS in below format in the datasource name section:
    (DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS_LIST = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP) (HOST =DB IP)(PORT = 1521)) ) (CONNECT_DATA = (SERVICE_NAME = ORCL) ) and provide the credentials.
    Method 3:
    To use the OCI call interface you need to have oracle client DB to be installed so that you can establish a connection using that DB credentials and connect to the remote dB and then import the tables.....this is the rule of thumb.
    hope helps you.
    Thanks

  • OBIEE reverse engineering to go from SQL Server to a data warehouse

    Hi,
    I'm new to data modeling for warehouses. We currently have an OBIEE environment set up where the data source was SQL Server transactional tables. The SQL Server data is to be moved to a non-Oracle data warehouse and I need to produce a logical data model for the warehouse folks at my company. Unfortunately, the SQL Server data was never modeled, so, I'm basing the model from the Logical and Physical diagram/relationships of OBIEE.
    My question is in regards to the validity of the following relationship to be used in a data warehouse based on what's currently in OBIEE. When I model this via Erwin, I'm wondering if I'm way off base in the relationships (modeling, not personal):
    Dimension 1 has a 0:M with Dimension 2
    Dimension 1 has a 0:M with Dimesion 3
    Dimension 2 has a 0:M with Dimension 3
    Both Dimension 2 and Dimension 3 have a 0:M with Fact 1
    Through the use of aliases and such, this does work in OBIEE. Will this work as a data model for a data warehouse environment?
    Thanks!

    I think you started with the wrong foot. I suggest you search in Google for "kimball methodology" and have a read at a few articles. Your DWH model should not be based on your transactional tables. You should ask your business users what "questions" they want to answer in the DWH. Then model your DWH base on that. You can not model a DWH without knowing what questions you need to answer. For instance if your business users want to know the sales per day and per branch you will a sales fact with a sales amount measure joining to two dimensions branch and time dimension. The number of facts will depend on the questions you need to answer, the type of data and the granularity of them.

  • Not able to import date column as Date time(SQL server) in OBIEE

    Hi,
    We have created cube in sql server.
    We have two date column in cube i.e. created date(datetime) joining date(datetime)
    Once I import joining date (Data type: Datetime) and created date(Datetime) by default it import as varchar.
    problems:
    1. I need to calculate difference of two date at OBIEE level. But it is varchar and I am not able to calculate the difference of two dates i.e. created date-joining date.
    I tried evaluate function also but not able to do in OBIEE 10.1.3.4.
    Any help pls

    Hi,
    In your cube have you set the type to 'Date' for this attribute? If not, try it and let me know if this still imports as varchar.
    Hope this helps.
    Thank you,

  • Migrating OBIEE Repfrom Oracle database to SQL server database in Solaris.

    Hi,
    I need inputs in how we would migrate our connections in Repository from Oracle database to SQL server database in Sloaris server.
    Is there a complication here.
    Regards,
    Bhavik

    Well that makes more sense, you probably have phrased your question better. Microsoft SQL Server Connectivity Components are not supported in any other operating system than Windows. So you will not be able to use the SQL Server native drivers to connect to your SQL Server. ODBC it's an option but there aren't many ODBC drivers for Unix systems. Luckily for you OBIEE includes the DataDirect ODBC drivers and supports using them to connect to a SQL Server. Check [the documentation|http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E10415_01/doc/bi.1013/e10416/general_101331.htm#sthref9] on how to use them. Having said that I would say that whoever is pushing to move your DWH to SQL Server should consider also moving OBIEE to a Windows server to be able to use the SQL Server native drivers to connect to SQL Server.
    PS: No needs to post 3 times. :-)

  • Can OBIEE 10G connect to a SQL Server database (2005)?

    We have Oracle BI running already. We have also a SQL Server database running. Now there is requirement that asks to connect to the SQL Server and directly send some SQL quires to the SQL Server and get result back and display it in answers. I know the normal process should be set ETL to load the data from the SQL Server to OBIEE and from there the report can be built. So I am not sure is this doable?

    Hi Srini,
    These is the steps I have done:
    1. open Oracle BI administration tool
    2. create a new repository
    3. select import from database, and specify the ODBC (connection to the SQL Server). It asked me to choose tables to import. I then selected one table. Now I can see the connection pool and the table being created in physical. I saved it.
    4. I then goes to BI interactive dashboard -> answers-> Direct Database Request. In the connection pool I entered the name of the connection pool in step 3. And entered some simple query and I got:
    error : Odbc driver returned an error (SQLExecDirectW).
    error : State: HY000. Code: 10058. [NQODBC] [SQL_STATE: HY000] [nQSError: 10058] A general error has occurred. [nQSError: 27022] Unresolved Connection Pool object: "asepostest_pool". (HY000)
    error : SQL Issued: {call NQSGetQueryColumnInfo('EXECUTE PHYSICAL CONNECTION POOL asepostest_pool select * from branch')}
    Should I modify NQSConfig.INI in C:\OracleBI\server\Config\ to make it point to my new repository? Like this?
    Star
    =
    asepostest1.rpd, DEFAULT;
    But then I couldn't restart BI server.

  • How to access the MDX application from SQL server when working with OBIEE?

    Hi,
    I am new to MS SQL Server 2005. We have developed the OLAP Cubes on SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio with its integration with Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition (OBIEE).
    The backend query is in MDX language. Now if I need to run that query I need to access the MDX Application, rite?
    So need to know how to connect to MDX application.
    Regards,

    Administration Tool: File - Import - "from multidimensional". There you choose "Provider Type" = "Analysis Server 2005". You specify the URL, user name and password. Then you can import MSAS cubes just like Essbase ones.
    Cheers

  • OBIEE 11g, Informatica and DAC: Migrating from Oracle DB to SQL Server?

    Hi Gurus,
    Currently we are implementing OBIEE 11g with Oracle BI Application for EBS (Supply Chain, Procurement & Finance modules). We have incorporated all OUT-OF-THE-BOX mappings and configurations in DAC, Informatica and RPD (no change, only OOTB). We were using Oracle DB and Linux servers.
    Now the client wants to migrate this to one Windows box.
    Can anyone point out, what are the changes need to done to migrate to SQL Server database. Any existing documentation or link will be helpful.
    Edited by: Sudipta Gupta on Aug 2, 2012 1:59 PM

    If you are using SQL Server 2008 then you need to edit the DAC config.bat file replace sqljdbc.jar with sqljdbc4.jar.
    Rest of DAC and Informatica configuration is almost similar.
    Let us if you come across any issues.
