Occasional grey screen when switching between SL and Windows

Hi folks,
I set up my new Mac Mini to dual-boot with Windows XP using boot camp. Sometimes when I switch from one to the other the system hangs on a grey screen and I have to shut down using the power button. This happens both when I choose restart and hold down the options (alt) tab and when I use system preferences and choose the boot drive from the menu. This is my config:
Mac Mini 2009 with 120GB HDD and 2GB RAM, running Snow Leopard and WindowsXP, Microsoft Natural Curve Keyboard 2000 and Logitech Optical mouse (both USB),
HP 1310 AIO inkjet printer. I am networked to an HP 1320tn laserjet printer and an NAS that is formatted to FAT32. Everything works.
Additionally, I have an external drive (2.5" HDD) that connects to the back of the Mini using two USB cables for power. I'm pretty sure I have the external drive formatted to FAT32 because both operating systems can see the contents.
I am wondering if the external drive is sometimes confusing the bootloader (or whatever it's called in the Mac world) and is the source of my problems. I am open to suggestions.
Thanks in advance,
Bryan

Well, I eliminated one problem: the external HDD was indeed formatted NTFS. I just installed a new external HDD formatted FAT32, connected by firewire, so I was able to take one USB device out of the system (and free up two USB ports). So far the computer is booting properly with no hangs and I am able to access, read, and modify documents from the ext drive when I am in SL.
Also, just for giggles, I ordered an Apple keyboard to further reduce incompatability risks (and to get the Apple shortcut keys. However, I am not parting with my Logitech mouse: must have two buttons.
We'll see if the problems occurs again.

  • Do I need to reset the router when switching between Win and Mac?

I just set up my new Mac Pro with OSX 1.5.2 and Win XP using Bootcamp and it all works fine, but I have one question about connecting to the internet.
I have a Belkin pre-N wireless router. I am connected using an ethernet cable.
When I switch between OSX and Windows by restarting the computer, is it necessary to restart the router while the computer is off so that when it comes back on it can locate its proper connection?
When I was working on my old PC and my new Mac Pro, I noticed that if I just took the ethernet cable from the Mac or PC and connected it to the other machine, it couldn't find the internet unless I turned off the router, waited a moment and turned it back on again, connected to the other machine and then started the machine.
As the two OSs are now in the same machine, will this continue to happen or can I simply switch between operating systems without having to re-initialize the router and connect it before turning on the computer again?
I haven't tried it yet because I am afraid to screw things up, so I am continuing to turn off, restart the router, re-connect and turn the computer on again. That work perfectly but it is tedious.
Can anyone please advise on whether this is necessary or not?
Thanks a lot for any advice.

    Luis:
You should be able to leave the router on and switch between the two OSes. Try it. Worst thing that can happen is that you would need to restart the router.

  • Graphic distortion when switching between external and built-in display (rMBP)

Recently (within the past two weeks or so) I've noticed a strange issue when switching between my external display (Thunderbolt) and my built-in display on my 15" rMBP. The following issue seems to be specific to Photoshop CS6.
Typically, I'll have a PS document open on my external display and I'll wind up taking my to another location. If I close the PS document while on my built-in and then re-open it, I get all kinds of distortion and pixellation. Closing out PS and reopining, restarting, logging on/off; none of it seems to work. It seems like the issue is with the PSD itself, but it doesn't make any sense to me. Any ideas? Screenshot: http://i.imgur.com/iCipSc7.jpg

Do you have intel gpy as well as other graphic card?  You may be viewing document on different gpu's.  PS does not like multiple gpu's.

  • Photos get all blurry when switching between "100%" and "Fit to Screen"

    Hello,
I downloaded the Aperture 3 Testversion and I'm trying to create a new book. I managed to design all the pages but when I switch between the views the photos get all blurry until I zoom in and out of the photo.
I was wondering if anybody knows if it will affect the print out version and if I can do something that they aren't blurry when I get my copy?
    Thank you for your help.
    Tim

    I have also noticed this.
Click the print button in the book layout window.
In the print dialog, choose PDF>open pdf in Preview.
I presume this shows a reasonably accurate facsimile of how the images will appear when printed.

  • In the edit screen when switching between photos, it starts clear and then after a second, it becomes a little blurry.  Any one else experiencing this?

In Iphoto, when in the edit screen, when the photo first comes on it appears clear, then after about a second, it blurs a bit which makes it hard to edit.   This does not happen when previewing each photo, only when editing.
    Anyone else have this issue.

Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder.
(On 10.7: Hold the option (or alt) key while clicking on the Go menu in Finder to access the User Library)
(Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.

  • Conflicting available HDD space when switching between Native and Emulation

I have installed Bootcamp and Windows 7 Home 64-bit. I have found one issue...
When I am booted into Mac and using VMware Fusion, my Bootcamp partition indicates I have 16Gb free of the 32Gb partition. This is what I expected. This also seems to be the case when using WIndows to check available space.
    However...
When I natively boot into Windows, Windows indicates I have less than 2Gb free, which seems strange because I don't know where this space seems to have gone...
    Any clues out there?

    Thanks for the reply.
I do not have a file in that location. I do have one here though...
    Hard Drive/Users/My Account/Library/Application Support/VMware Fusion/Virtual Machines/Boot Camp/Bootcamp.vmwarevm
    Is this the same thing?
When I have Bootcamp running using Fusion the Bootcamp drive on my desktop disappears. Is this normal?
When the Drive is available it says I have less than 2Gb free. However when I do a check within Windows running through fusion it says I have 13Gb free.
I just want to know how much space I have left and if it is really 2gb, where did it all go? Windows 7 Surely does not take up 20Gb of space!

  • Switching between Mac and Windows platforms

    Hi there
Are there any problems with using an external hard drive and moving back and forth between a Mac and a Windows PC? I'm mainly using MS Office documents but am concerned that they might corrupt if I switch back and forth betwen Mac and Windows.
    Any pointers or suggestions?
    Cheers

    Hi Sharif,
Thanks for your answer. If I could just ask for some clarification
Sure thing, tht's why we are here, aren't we ?
If I buy a new external drive, should I then use Disk Utility to format it according to the guidelines you've given?
    1. Start Disk Utility
    2. In the left pane click on the external harddisk
    3. Click on the 'Partition'-Tab in the right pane
    4. Choose 'One Partition'
    5. Choose 'MS-DOS' and enter a "Name"
    6. Click on the 'Options'-Button and set MBR as partition scheme
    7. run the partitioning
And in doing so, this will make the drive stable across platforms?
Has worked for me on a number of external harddisks.
Although I personally share the hatters opinion about NTFS being the better file system.
But as said you have to use a third-party helper in OSX to write to NTFS harddisks.

  • HT3180 When trying to play itunes and slideshows from my Mac book to Apple TV the small icon on the bottom right of the screen which switches between Computer and Apple TV doesn't always show up, and therefore the function doesn't work.  What's up?

We are trying to play playlists and a slideshow from an Apple Macbook wirelessly to the Apple TV.  The small, upward arrow icon that appears on the bottom right of the screen (which allows you to pick Computer or Apple TV) doesn't always show up, and therefore, we can't get it to work.  Any thoughts?

Airplay mirroring software will not work with anything below Mountain Lion 10.8 and an Apple computer from 2011 or newer.

Go to "About this Mac" and tell us:
    1. What OS X version you are running
And then click on "More Info" and tell us
    1. What year is your Macbook.
Also tell us a little about your cable and Wireless setup.
    Maybe we can help.

  • Word Wrap Lost When Switching Between XML and Author Views

I compose DITA topics in the XML view with the word wrap option selected. If I switch to the Author view to check something and then return to the XML view, my nicely formatted XML view with all the happy element-nesting tabs goes away. I wind up with an ugly chunk of flush-left code and text that's difficult to read. Is there a reason why FM can't remember the tabs and word wrap when I return to the XML view?
I'm relatively new to using FM's structured side for DITA, so perhaps I'm missing the obvious solution to this problem. If you know the answer, I'd appreciate if you'd clue me in.
    Thanks!

    Sarah,
When you switch from XML to Author (or WYSIWYG) view, FM does not "remember" the XML document at all. Instead, internally it creates a structured FM document with the same element structure (possibly modified by the underlying XML application). When you switch back to XML view, it creates a new XML document from the current element structure, thereby preserving any changes you made in Author View. FM is very conservative about writing white space to XML in order to avoid inserting unwanted significant space.
If you do all your editing in XML View and want to inspect the formatted version of the document without making changes to white space, always make a copy of the XML document (with File > Save As) and use the copy in Author View.

  • Presentation Director loses settings when switching between Chinese and English

I've done the "Install files for East Asian languages" and then set the "Language for non-Unicode programs" to "Chinese (PRC)". I do this for our presales people so they can show our prospects that our software is translated (for those that have plants in China and the US). I have the default language set to English. I don't believe it's relevant but I should also mention that this is on a Lenovo T61 with XP-SP3.
When I use the Presentation Director (Fn+F7) most of the screen shows in Chinese. The ones I've added show in English (I have a screen snapshot). I also get Chinese characters in other Lenovo utilities as well.
So I figured I'd just change the "Language for non-Unicode programs" back to English, reboot, and the display would be OK. Not so! The display is in English all right, but NOTHING appears in the window - none of the default settings, none that I added, JUST NOTHING! I have a snapshot of this as well.
I changed the Unicode setting back to Chinese, reboot, and Presentation Director shows all of them still there, some in Chinese and some in English like before.
Does anyone have any ideas how I can get the Presentation Director utility to display properly (in English) and show all the original settings as well? Obviously the settings are stored somewhere since when Chinese is turned on it can display them.
    Thanks in advance!
    Tim

  • Monitor color profile when switching between LR and PS

I have a calibrated profile in use with PS.PS and LR are set to Adobe RGB color space but I use the calibrated profile. When I export an image from LR to PS it shows the mismatch dialogue box: Embedded Adobe RGB 1998, Working: Monitor calibrated profile.
should I use the 1)embedded profile instead of working space, 2)convert to working space or 3)discard embedded profile? I will obviously reimport to LR when finished in PS.

    >it shows the mismatch dialogue box: Embedded Adobe RGB 1998, Working: Monitor3-7-08.
Ow, this means you have Photoshop set up incorrectly. Go to Edit->Color settings and make sure that the top-profile (RGB) says adobeRGB. You should never have a monitor profile there except if you're a web designer.
    >DYP, you can change LR colour space to other than ProPhoto as default.
No you cannot. You can only change the default profile Lightroom uses to send to Photoshop. Lightroom ALWAYS uses a prophotoRGB-like working space internally for every picture.
    >I set it to Adobe RGB to sync with camera and PS.
If you shoot RAW, the in-camera setting does not matter and Lightroom will render as wide as prophotoRGB.
    >Would changing to ProPhoto colour space not cancel my calibrated monitor profile? Or am I misunderstanding the principles behind monitor calibration?
No, they have nothing to do with each other. Color managed apps automatically translate between their working space and the monitor profile. This capability is the basic meaning of being color managed. They get the information about the monitor profile from the OS. You never have to tell them about it. Photoshop just knows it. You do not have to set it up anywhere.

  • OWA - save menu disappears when switching between calendar and mail

Hi everybody!  We recently migrated to from Exch 07 to 13, and there seems to be a small problem in OWA.
In OWA 2013, when users creates an invite in Calendar, and switch back to Mail, a menu appears (see below) and then disappears immediately.  Instead of allowing users to choose whether to save or discard changes to their invites, it automatically discards,
and goes to Mail.  It happens in both IE and Chrome, and for all users. Any ideas what's
going on?   Tried all the usual - clearing cache, etc.  It doesn't appear to be a problem with the client.  Thanks!

    Hi,
From your description, I recommend you create a new mailbox in your Exchange server 2013 and verify if this new user has the same issue. What's more, this issue doesn't appear on Outlook, you can try to recreate OWA virtual directory to check the result.
Here is an article for your reference.

  • Line across screen when switching between applications?

    2011 21.5" iMac OS X Mavericks (10.9)
    AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512
Since upgrading to Mavericks I have noticed a line across the screen during the genie effect when you open, close or minimize applications. The line is most noticable when minimizing an application which is on top of my wallpaper. The wallpaper is the default Mavericks image.
The line does not appear when scrolling or sliding back through pages in safari etc. The above is the only thing that will trigger the issue.
Is anyone else experiencing this or have a solution for it?

Do you have any third-party extensions installed? I googled and found several that will perform this auto-hide action: Quitling, App Presto, AutoHide, and DragThing are some of them.

  • Why do the relative values of RGB and CMYK change when switching between Photoshop and InDesign?

I'm trying to put together a Colour Guide for my company's brand guidelines.
I initially worked from InDesign and wrote down all the H, RGB, and CMYK values that I got when I eye-dropped my original colour palette.
However when I put the same RGB values into Photoshop- I am given a (slightly) different set of CMYK numbers from those that I had originally documented in InDesign.
    Why is this???

    Jamie,
in Photoshop go to Edit > Color Settings and choose your  parameters:
For RGB: sRGB or AdobeRGB (1998)
For CMYK: the process as recommended by your printer (person, company)
For offset printing this is here ISOCoated-v2-eci and elsewhere for instance SWOP.
For digital printing you should ask the company as well.
    For Grayscale: Gray Gamma 2.2
For Spot: probably irrelevant in the moment. Dot Gain 20%
    Everything as shown here:
For your application I've modified my settings a little, therefore we can see top left 'unsynchronized'.
In InDesign do practically the same, but there are no settings for Grayscale.
You'll find for any topic explanations if you move to by mouse (position the pointer over ...).
The field 'Settings' shows not 'Custom' but the file name of a configuration which had been previously saved
and then loaded (buttons top right).
Further explanations on request. It would be quite useless to explain everything now at the same time.
The colors will be wrong if the settings are not synchronized. Above they are explicitly synchronized.
Because Bridge was not used, the system considers them as 'not synchronized', which doesn't matter.
    Best regards --Gernot Hoffmann
