Ok to update to iOS 5 from 4.2?

Hello. I have an iPhone 4 and would like to iOS 5. I am currentyl running 4.2.1 and have nerver updated to any of the 4.3 versions for whatever reason. Is it ok to skip 4.3 and update directly from 4.2 to 5? Are there any known issues of skipping versions for such a drastic update?
Thank you.

You appear to have a second generation iPod touch, which can't be updated past 4.2.1.

I got my iPhone 5 almost a month ago and updated its iOS but from there on I started having problems, the ph sometimes doesn't respond at all to the touch or apps start to open on their own very rapidly and this continues till it can go no further!

    First steps in troubleshooting:
Close all open apps by double-tapping the home button, then swiping up and off the screen with the app window (not the smaller icon).
Then reset: hold down the home button along with the sleep/wake button until you see the apple, then let go. (No data loss)

  • Updating to IOS 7 from 6.0

    Hello Everyone,
I need to update my Ipad 4 to IOS 7 from 6.0 and I am wondering if there are things I should be aware of or do before just hitting the upgrade button. Personally I have to say that I like the look of the IOS 6 better and some of the functionality, but it's preventing me from being able to download some new apps which is starting to become frustrating.
I'm mainly concerned about losing some of the game data I have regarding at least 2 games. I would be upset if I lost my progress within these games. I tried doing a back up through itunes, but because I never did a back up before when I first originally bought my ipad it wants to set it up as new and erase everything or sync it with my old ipod data.
Any tips, tricks or experiences you had when updating would be appreciated.
    Thank you for your time.

Thank you for your help Ralph.  When I click on to back up my data using icloud it only lists to apps that I really don't care about at all. Will it back up all my app data even if they are not listed in the screen?
The main reason as to why I did not update sooner was because I preferred the functionality better of the ios 6 and I do know that I can never go back which is unfortunate. I wish Apple would let you if you wanted to. Even though I would MUCH rather stay with IOS 6 I am unable to download some apps that I want because you must have IOS 7 to update them, so pretty much you have to update if you want to proceed.

  • Update iPhone iOS away from home computer?

    Hello,
I have an iPhone 4 and am thinking about upgrading the iOS to 4.2.1 but will not be able to get to my home computer for about a week. Is there a way to update the iOS on a different computer than the one I normally use and sync to? I'm hoping if I upgrade but not sync it will keep my settings and data (including music) but I'm not sure if it works that way.
    Thanks for any help!

I upgraded my iPnone 4 using my travel computer and had no issues.
HOWEVER, when I upgraded my iPhone 3G using an old Dell laptop when iOS 3.0 came out, my iPhone got "bricked". Luckily, I was able to successfully restore it on my own, but the iPhone 3G was wiped. Luckily, (again), the upgrade process included backing up, so I was able to get all my contacts back along with photos and SMSs.
If you try to upgrade, just make sure you have the backup and even if the iPhone gets "bricked", you can take to an Apple Store, have them restore the iPhone with the latest update, then reload your iPhone from the backup.

  • How can I update multiple IOS devices from one computer without downloading IOS each time

My company is on a VERY slow internet connection, and at the moment we are using a cellular modem to increase our bandwidth.  This connection is a metered connection.  The 1 Gb download for IOS 7 will kill all of my purchased bandwidth, and has a potential to both take a while and/or cost a fortune.  I need a way to update 58 iPhone 4's, 4S's and 5's to IOS 7 while only downloading IOS for each device type once.  We are using iTunes to do this update as the update utility on the phone has caused 3 of our units to crash and lose all their data.  2 of which were bricked and had to be replaced by applecare.  We had a utility for that when I worked for apple a few years ago that used iTunes in this manner, but I am not sure this exists on the consumer side.  Does anyone know where i can look for this solution?

    - Since you have iOS 4.x, the only way to update the iPod is to connect the iPod to a computer and update via iTunes. See:
iOS 4: Updating your device to iOS 5 or later
    - If you following these instructions you can update the iPod without losing anything.  WHen you restore from backup as the article says the iPod will also be updated.

  • How do I update to iOS 5 from a different computer? ("Main" comp I used for pasted updates/downloads was destroyed.)

My "main" comp, the comp I have used for sync's, backups, etc. was destroyed in Afghanistan. I have been trying to update to iOS5 for 3 months and I am using a "new" comp, with latest iTunes, but it won't update; it spends hours backing up my iPhone, then proceeds to mess up my apps and restore old ones long ago deleted. Wiping out my iPhone and all the apps, etc., is not an option, nor should it be. I am really not "apple-savvy" so any help would be greatly appreciated. Do I need to wipe out iTunes on all computers and start from scratch? I've had several people who have succesfully updated try to help me out and have had no success. My work schedule makes it tough to get over to an apple store. If anyone can point me in the right direction, you would be saving me countless hours of frustration as well as countless hours spend re-configuring my iPhone. Thank you.

Carefully follow steps 1-9 outlined by wjosten in this post: https://discussions.apple.com/message/13356770#13356770.  This will not, however, avoid wiping any non-purchased media from your phone (ripped CDs, etc.) as this is only synced one way: from your computer to your phone.  You will have to either rebuild your iTunes library with this content and sync again to restore it to your phone, or purchase 3rd party software to copy it from your phone to iTunes prior to syncing (such as Touch Copy).

  • Update to iOS 8 from 7.1.2 can't transfer purchases to Library iTunes 11.4

When upgrading I get the following message
There are purchased items on the iPhone "xxxxxxx's iPhone” that have not been transferred to your iTunes library. You should transfer these items to your iTunes library before updating this iPhone. Are you sure you want to continue?
So far as I can tell, there should be an entry in the File menu of iTunes to transfer the items, but there is no such entry in my iTunes (11.4 OSX). I found it in File Devices but the transfer purchases option is greyed out?
How do I transfer these items to your iTunes library before updating this iPhone?

Unfortunately, I know that the content is music rather than some miscellaneous app. Not a huge deal as there is only a few quid involved, however, I may be able to retrieve the tunes for free from the store subsequently. Not a brilliant solution to have to go for really. What do you think?

  • How can I prevent the Videos in iOS 8 from automatically playing the next episode of a TV Show?

I noticed that, after updating my iOS device from iOS 7 to 8, that when it's finished playing a TV Show episode in the Videos app, it begins playing the next one. I like to fall asleep, listening to a single episode knowing that it'll stop and eventually let my iPad fall asleep, but with this change in iOS 8, it will play through the rest of season before doing so.

    Thanks.
I noticed you bolded "Apple-branded apps" from the first sentence of section 2 (c).
What is the definition of "Apple-branded" in this context?
For example, "Apple Watch" is now a preinstalled app, and would seem to fit the definition of "Apple-branded", but I can't uninstall it.
    Ingo2711 wrote:
Not all apps can be removed, for example Safari, iWatch, Weather,... they all come with the iOS software. Only some apps made by Apple that are available in the AppStore can be removed again, if preinstalled on your iPhone 6, for example Pages, Garageband and some others.
You can remove those and install them later again by downloading them again for free.
(c)To the extent that Apple has preinstalled Apple-branded apps from the App Store on your iOS Device at the time of purchase (“Preinstalled Apps”),

I tried to update to ios 6 from ios5.In the middle it showed error 23 and my device stuck in DFU or Recovery mode. I tried everything wrote on apple support uninstall security softwares, chage USB port etc. Then I Tried to restore to iOS 5 but then it showed The device is't eligible for the requested build .Then again I tried to RESTORE to iOS 6 it showed error 26 but when I looked at my device it was at the iOS 6 startup it shows "Update Completed The iphone was updated successfully. There are just few more steps to follow. Then you've finished!.     Then I pressed continue & it shows the same picture as in recovery mode "Connect to itunes". When I connect it to itunes it shows " iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPhone “RS BUTTAR”. • TS3682 Trying to update my iOS 4 to iOS 6

I am trying to update my iOS 4 from my IPad 2 to a newer version of iOS . They have the worst instructions on how to upgrade to iOS 5. Usually Apple is really easy, but not with this. And, unlike my iPhone 5, you can't go to General settings. I have searched the App store and iTunes, but I keep getting nowhere!!

See the chart below to determine whether you can upgrade your device and what you can upgrade to. If you do not have a Software Update option present on your iDevice, then you are trying to upgrade to iOS 5 or higher. You will have to connect your device to your computer and open iTunes in order to upgrade.
