Older G5 Mac Pro Is Unable To Transfer Files To Any External Hard Drives?

I have an older G5 (2003) & have several hardrives (1 extra interal) & 3 external hard drives connected to it.
Recently I have not been able to transfer any files to any of the hard drives even though there is lots of memory space available.
I receive a notice that there is not enough room (0 ) on the hard drives.
I even tried to move a couple of pics to a small thumb hard drive that was empty & I get the same message.
Any one else ever have this situation?
Any ideas how to correct it?
Thanks,
Sal

Hello & thank you  "Hatter" for the response & info about the correct forum & thank you BD Aqua for the welcome & advice as well :-)
I apologize for the very late response as I have been traveling for work & didn't have a chance to focus on this computer & issue until recently.
It appears my main computer hard drive was the issue & I repaired it & started fresh with a new install of the operating system.
It appears to be working fine reading the external hard drives now.
Thanks again for the quick response & advice... it is appreciated & nice to have my Mac media network back in my life :-)

How do I transfer files from an external hard drive to my mac book pro?

What files are they? Is it a clone, a TM backup, or simply drag 'n drop?
If it's the latter, simply drag them back. If something else, please post back with detailed info.

  • How do i transfer file from my external hard drive to my new mac

How do I transfer my files from my external hard drive (all files coming from a PC) to my new macbook pro?

What sort of files? Are you looking to transfer an entire user account or some data files?

  • How can I transfer files off an external hard drive formatted for windows?

I just bought my first mac (yay!) and am trying to transfer my files off of my old pc.  The problem is that I stored all my personal files on an external hard drive, which is of course formatted for windows.  My mac will open it, but it is "read only."  I tried plugging it back into my pc and using the Migration Assistant to transfer my files over, but it was not detected (rest of the pc was).
However, the second time I tried plugging it in to my pc, it told me it would need to be formatted first.  Obviously my mac has changed something on it, and now all my personal files are on a hard drive that is unusable by either my old pc or my new mac!
Any suggestions would be appreciated!  Heads up though, I am not especially computer literate, and my pc needs to stay intact as the husband needs it and some of the programs on it for school.  Also, I have a second external hard drive that is brand new with nothing on it, if that will come in handy.
    Thanks!

Format the extra HDD to EXFAT as previously indicated.  There are two ways that can use to transferr the data.
    1.  Connect both drives to the PC and the copy the files to the newly formatted (EXFAT) drive from the HDD with the data .  Then connect the EXFAT drive to the MBP and transfer the data to same.
    2.  Connect both drives to the MBP and open DISK UTILITY>RESTORE.  Drag the drive with the data on it to the 'Source' field.  Drag the EXFAT drive to the 'Destination' field.  Click on the 'Restore' butt is on.  After the transfer has been completed, close DISK UTILITY and place the data on the MBP where you want it.
    Ciao.

How do I transfer document and photo files from an external hard drive formerly connected to my old PC into my new iMac computer?

There are several different ways to move data from your old PC to your iMac, including Manually Migrating at > Switch 101: Migrate your Windows files or system to your Mac
If you just want to move file's from your External HD, simply plug it into your iMac and drag your doc's to your Documents Folder and Import your photos into iPhoto.

  • Getting a new Mac: need to transfer files/applications, have external hard drive, and wipe clean old Mac to give to family member

Getting a new Mac this Christmas. I have several questions:
    1. How do I transfer files/applications from old to new?
    2. I have an external hard drive, do I need to save iTunes account to it?
    3. How do I wipe the old Mac clean to give to family member?

    1. Use the Migration Assistant the first time you turn on the new computer.
    2. No, but you should do so as a backup.
    3. Click here and follow the instructions. If the computer originally shipped with Mac OS X 10.6.8 or earlier, when you reach step 5, insert its original disk, restart with the C or Option key held down, use the Disk Utility to erase the internal drive, and install a fresh OS.

  • Is there a "FAST" was to transfer files from an external Hard drive or to an external hard drive?

    Hi,
I am trying to send 2.5TB of data/movie files from one 3TB external hard drive to another. It says it will take over 24hours.
Is there a quicker way or program or app I can use to do this?
    Thank you

Yeah, well, I went to the WD site to try and find it and couldn't; it should be in your documentation that came with the drive (the tech specs). For instance, I purchased mine here and it shows (you can actually choose which speed you want):
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/EliteALmini/eSATA_FW800_FW400_USB
As I said, a lot of external drives are 5400 rpm; so are Macbook Pros, the new 21" iMacs, Mac Minis, etc. They are about 30+% slower to read/write than the 7200 rpm drives.

  • My start up disk is full I want to transfer files to my external hard drive how do I do that

Mac Book Air start up disk is full
I moved my iTunes to an external drive
    But this keeps happening
    Any ideas?

time machine or keep your collection of large media files on an external HD
    To show HD on desktop
go into FINDER at top then PREFERENCES  then GENERAL tab
then check "hard disks" and "external disks"
You already moved your music to your ext. HD,  why are you having any issues to transfer anything else?
check your SSD contents in your Air
See here for answer about the OTHER which is taking up space:

  • How do I transfer files from my external hard drive to my iMac?

I thought it would be as simple as plugging in to the USB port!

There are no popups on the Mac except for the drive window in some cases, and the Migration Assistant can't transfer data to an existing user account. As previously stated, drag the files you want to transfer over manually.
The drive should appear in the desktop or the sidebar of a Finder window. If it doesn't, check the Finder's preferences.

  • Can I transfer files from an external hard drive to iCloud?

I have been looking for a great alternative to backing up my all of my photos (I am a photographer). I own two externals that I'd like to get certain files backed up once more in another place just to make sure they are safe. So can I transfer my photos and files from my externals to iCloud? Or is this not a good back up plan? Thanks so much in advance!

  • My Mac won't let me put files into my external hard drive

I have a Lenovo USB external hard drive. I want to put files on it, but my Macbook air will not allow it. I am not sure what the problem is. Please help!

    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT3509
Apple has a handy search function on their web page, so you can go to the upper right searchbox on most pages and type in what you need.  Just typing in "format hard drive" gave me this result.

  • Final cut pro x crashes when loading files from my external hard drive.

Sorry, but I'm not following you very well. Perhaps some else who does will weigh in and help.

The term, movie files, covers a lot of territory. What format? Open in Quick Time, hit Command–I and post a screenshot.
My files are stored on an OWC external hard drive.
    Project and Events?
If I drag a file to my computers hard drive, the applications starts up fine. SMH.
Drag what kind of a file? Projects need to be opened from within FCP.

To delete files from your external HDD, attach it to your MBP and drag the unwanted files to trash and then empty trash.
Then you select the files that you want to transfer by 'drag and drop' to the external HDD and trash the files on your MBP.
    Ciao.
