First launch Image Capture, located in the Applications folder, and see if you can upload the phiotos to a folder on the Desktop. If you can then import the folder into iPhoto.
Then reformat the memory card using the camera's format option, take a few test photos and try importing into iPhoto again.

I haven't encountered this error, but let's try to figure out a solution.

As soon as you insert a CD (assumng you have a drive), iTunes should immediately open and ask if you want to add this to your Library. Say "Yes." (You haven't set the quality levels yet, but we want to set up your library, first.)
Music. If you have individual tracks you want to import, keep iTunes open, and simply drop the tracks in the "Songs" part of the Library on the left side of the screen. The tracks should be added automatically.
If this isn't working for you, please describe the error -- or better yet, provide screenshots. I'm certain you will be able to set up your iTunes library pretty quickly.

Ideally, you should stick with DV -it's already a highly compressed format to begin with and even then it comes in at 13GB per hour. Compressing even further and then converting back to DV to use the files in FCP will have a visible impact on quality.
A dual layer DVD can hold around 8 GB. They could burn the discs using Toast 9 or 10 which can split larger files across multiple discs.
If you have lots more, perhaps it would be better to invest in an external laptop drive and put the files on that. There are models that are powered via the FireWire bus, so that would also get around the fact that different voltages are used abroad.

So...I'm trying to transfer my itunes music to my laptop. I set up a new itunes on my laptop and, with great difficulty (I'm not technical), I've managed to be successful with the help of my memory stick, which saves wasting CDs.
However, for some reason a few tracks by a couple of artists don't seem to have transferred. So I had the idea to burn a CD and then copy that directly to my laptop.
There doesn't seem to be any trouble burning the CD - that works fine. I just select audio CD, and done within a minute or so. But when I then put the CD in my disc drive, it doesn't work.
It says 'track 1', with no other tracks for the entire CD. When I try to import it, it says 'unknown error -50'. I've tried tinkering with the import settings, but it makes no difference.
Does anyone have any ideas?

You can use the bootstrap tar.gz files that are found in the same directory as the iso on every mirror. If you go to the download page, select the mirror of your choice, you will see a file called "archlinux-bootstrap-2013.10.01-x86_64.tar.gz" (one for i686 also). That is what you need.
Unpack it whereever you think is appropriate, if you have enough RAM you can use /tmp. Then after setting up the partitions in the host (Kali/Debian, or whatever), you can arch-chroot to that unpacked directory. There you will find all the tools necessary to install (pacman and the arch-install-scripts).
This method has one issue though, and that is that the arch-chroot script (and maybe others) requires some pretty new versions of various things. In particular, I think that a pretty new version of bash is required. So I am not sure about the viability of this solution on anything debian, as their stable repos tend to be pretty conservative. It also means that you need to have a pretty good understanding of the install process, as you will still mostly follow the beginners guide, but it will require a few changes in the procedure.

So im safer using footage that is remotely being pulled from iphoto...
vs
using footage that is imported into FCP from imovie?
Is there anything i can do in fcp to make this footage more reliable or safer or more stable as i pull remotely from iphoto?

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
iTunes
Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
Bonjour
Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.

P2 Files in FINAL CUT 5.1.4 won't work. What should I do?

I have a hard drive that has P2 files on them and Im using Final Cut 5.1.4. When I try to open the project file it gives me an error message that reads: "File's format is too new for this version of the application" and when I try to open the XML files it gives me an error message that reads "No translation templates matching the selected XML file were found. Unable to import this file."
Is there any way to convert this into useable footage to edit in FCP 5.1.4? Also, the XML files are all about 4 to 8 MBs. Isnt there supposed to be footage in the capture scratch that the XML pulls from? There are MXF files in the video folders, but I don't have the right program to acknowledge them. What can I do?

Try to open what project? Did you get a project from someone? If so, what version of FCP are they using? If it is any version later than FCP 5.1.4, you will not be able to open it. They will need to export an XML of their project as XML Version 3. And then you can import that into FCP and that should import all of their bins, clips and sequences.

In FCP, you need to open a new project, then go FILE>IMPORT>XML. And the XML that was exported needs to be v3. FCP 5 will not recognize a v4 XML.

OK...hold on hold on hold on. Do you have the P2 media? Or some project folder? Do you have folders that contain a CONTENTS FOLDER, then inside there, 6 folders with names like VIDEO, VOICE, CLIP, PROXIE and AUDIO?

FCE 4.0.1 can only capture DV/HDV which is produced by cameras using Mini-DV TAPES and cameras shooting AVCHD which is a high definition format.
If your camera shoots standard definition on Memory Cards, DVDs or Hard Drives it will not work in FCE.
What is your camera's exact model name and number?

I need to convert these to Windows compatible video files of the highest possible ( least loss) quality. What export options in Final Cut Pro or in Quicktime Pro should I select? The codex in the converted files must not be Apple Intermediate Codec, for which there is no Windows version.

But if I reduce the quality setting on the Epson scanner to just slightly below highest quality, the images import into iPhoto just fine. Why won't iPhoto accept jpegs scanned at the highest quality setting? Wondering?

What scanner format settings dis you use? Are these color photos? If they are B/W did you scan as grayscale images? That could be the problem.
Are you able to open them with Preview? If so do a Save As, select full quality and save as a jpeg with a new file name. See if that file will import and work as intended.
