On the fence between mini and imac
Lightning hit my g5 mac a coulple of weeks ago and I am looking to purchase another. I don't really like the new mac with the glossy display. So I thought why not just purchase a 20in or 23in apple monitor with a Mini....I know it's a little more exspensive but I like the thought of it. Any help or suggestion on the two different options?
I think the generally best advice is to buy the best system you can afford within your budget and which meets the needs you have, or perceive yourself to have. Anything less and the result will be more likely to be a system that in 2 or 3 years proves insufficient and is more likely to need replacement. Buying a system at the top end of the budget means better flexibility, more likely to meet your needs as those change and perhaps expand, and which due to better performance is also more likely to encourage further use.
The Mac mini is an excellent system in its own right of course. For the money you get a tiny computer which actually outperforms its form factor by a surprising degree. The new models are rather faster and have more 'grunt' than the top of the range G5s of barely a couple of years ago and which were billed as genuine workhorses (which they were), but it does suffer from a couple of minor shortcomings which could figure greatly in the longer term: it has a slower (laptop) drive, and integrated graphics. Neither are crippling issues unless you need very fast storage (large Photoshop files for example) or highly demanding video uses, but they have to be considered. The upside is that the mini is very expandable in terms of the things you can hang on it, such as faster hard drives, and you get the choice of display (but only one display). The iMac's shortcoming is the all-in-one design, but if the screen looks good, the imac is very hard to beat.

Select just the values between min and max of an accumulated value over day
Hello Forum,
a value is accumulated over a day and over a period of time. Next day the value is reseted and starts again to be accumulated:

10.09.12 12:21 153Thank youThis solution works perfectly when the accumulated value has its low and its high on the same day. But I found out :( , that there is also data, which has its low yesterday and its high today. For a better understandig of the case, there is a machine, wich is working over 3 Shifts with irregular start and end time. For example Shift1 cann start at 5:50 or at 7:15. The accumulated value of the worked time is accumuated for each shift extra. This solution works for the shift 1 (approximate between 06:00-14:00) and for the shift 2(approximate between 14:00-22:00), because there is the low and the high of the accumulated value on the same day. This solution does not work for the shif 3(approximate between 22:00-06:00), because the high of the accumulated value is or can be the next day.
So the thread title should be: "Select just the values between min and max of an accumulated value over the same day(today) or over two successive days (yesterday and today)

New mac mini and imac vs powermac G5 running FCP studio
I want to compare running the FCP suite on the new max minis and imacs that came out today vs what I am currently using:
Currently I am running FCP Studio on a Powermac G5 dual 2GHz with one gig of ram. I believe the frontside bus is 1GHz. I believe the stock video card isan ATI Radeon 9600 Pro (AGP 8X Pro) video card with 64 MB of DDR SDRAM.
With this being said, is it safe to assume that the new entry level mac mini would surpass my G5 in terms of performnce in both video (NVIDIA GeForce 9400M with128MB or 256MB of shared DDR3) memory processing (intel core2 duo 2GHz)?
If not would the two low end Imacs (using NVIDIA GeForce 9400M with 256MB of shared DDR3 memory) and processing power handle FCP studio better than my current powermac G5 setup listed above?
I am wondering because I spoke to a apple sales person who transfered me to a system engineer that said I'd have a slow time rendering video on FCP with the mac minis as well as the 2 low end imacs. This may be but Im wondering if it is still better than what I am using
I appreciate your opinions, but please only answer if you really know,
Thanks! For FCP/FCS I would not save on anything but will get the max what my budget allow. You will be always doing more and the workflow in FCS will entice you to open almost all apps in FCS concurrently to make use of the advanced features. I think that the new iMac are powerful enough to handle FCS, but once again, the extra dollars will save you alot of pain. FCS is a pro app and is not to be underestimated. Good luck.

I'm a new user - recent convert from longtime Windows to Apple. Thought having desktops and computing aligned with phones and tablets would help. Not so far.
I have a MacMini running Mavericks 10.9.1, and an iMac running Mavericks 10.9.1. File Sharing is set up on both. If either device is rebooted for any reason, file sharing from the Mac Mini to the iMac "breaks" and will not easily restart. Various things eventually brings the connection back - usually having to do with checking and unchecking File Sharing, the AFP button, and/or the SMB button on the iMac - but never the same procedure twice in a row. File Sharing from the iMac to the Mac Mini is never disrupted - always comes back up without a problem. Screen Sharing also works between both without fail, and comes up after reboot of either. No problem there. Only difficulty is from Mac Mini to the iMac.
Why? Any ideas?Should also clarify - usually takes multiple hours of checking/unchecking file sharing settings in order to restore the share between Mac Mini and iMac. NEVER happens automatically.
This is disruptive because I've got the Mac Mini pointing to several file locations on the iMac for various things - photos, music, etc. - and they all hang up unless the share is restored. Real bummer. -
What's the difference between thunderbolt and mini displayport?
I'm trying to connect my Macbook with a monitor and I'm thinking of what cable to get. I will have to connect using a (Thunderbolt to HDMI cable) or a (mini displayport to HDMI cable).
I was wondering what's the difference between Thunderbolt and mini displayport
Thanks@bontistic: it is not true that only the Macbook Air supports Thunderbolt. All models(!) support thunderbolt: also the Macbook Pro's and Mini's. Eg.: http://www.apple.com/nl/macbookpro/features.html#thunderbolt
My Macbook Pro from 2011 already supported Thunderbolt... -
HT204388 how do I switch between my mac mini and iMac using iMac screen?
how do I switch between my mac mini and i mac using i mac screen? I thought it was using F2 but that does not seem to work.
To switch between your Mac mini and iMac, you just have to turn on or off Target Display mode. To do it, press Command and F2 keys in your iMac, not only F2

Please help! My hard drives work on all other computers except new imac and macmini.
Both the mac mini and imac do not have cd drives. The trouble is why should I repair the external HDs when they work fine on other computers? I'm running OS X 10.8.4. I feel like its an OS X problem but I cant say. I will try the suggestion but I absolutely cannot reformat these drives right now becuae it would be way too time consuming to recover all the files on them

I live in Japan,
I have all igoods in order to use all, fully as should be. But looks like Softbank does no agree with any connection between iPhone and iMac... What in the world! How Apple let that happen??Make sure that you allow pages to choose their colors and that you haven't enabled High Contrast in the Accessibility settings.
*Firefox > Preferences > Content : Fonts & Colors > Colors : [X] "Allow pages to choose their own colors, instead of my selections above"

What is the difference between Firefox and Firefox os, and what one is better for the Samsung galaxy s3 mini, Please could you recommend which one is the best and most suitable for my phone please. Many thanks Michelle Petch
Thank you for your question.
Firefox is basically a browser. And Firefox OS is an Operating System. You can install Firefox in your SGS3 just like an android application. But if you want Firefox operating system on it. then you have to flash the ported Firefox OS on your device. Then it will be a completely different standalone operating system.you cannot install android applications on it.
To read more technical difference read:

1. After my last synching between iPad3 and iMac, most of my downloaded books have a cloud/arrow symbol and won't open. Most PDF files in iBook just disappeared. I am afraid to resync as a book I recently downloaded, which took up a big chunk of my 5GB download limit, doesn't appear on my computer and when I try to sync, I get the message that all my books will be replaced.
2. Is there any way to read the books downloaded to my iPad on my iMac? Can I download an Ap for that?
I am really disappointed in the interface between my iPad and iMac and the fact that I can't selectively delete items (music and photos) that I have synched to the iPad. It seems like Apple if going toward the Microsoft method of trying to do everything for you, rather than allowing the user to manually do things. In iBooks on the iPad every book you purchased will be on the Purchased Book collection. Those books that you have purchased in the past but for some reason are not actually on your iPad are still available in the bookstore. They will have the cloud symbol on the corner. You can tap on that book to download it again. You will not be charged for doing this.

Whats the diff between express and pro??
Just wondering what the main diff between the two are. I've used pro at school, but cant afford to get it at home. Will i still be able to use the same audio instruments like the same synths and plug ins??? Also, would i be able to run the program on a mac mini (top of the line)?
Matt Mac 63, "Whats the diff between express and pro??" #5, 10:33pm Oct 18, 2005 CDT
All I was saying is that if a person can afford to get Pro, they definitely should. The difference in features adds up to at least the difference in price, if not very much more.
Having said that, Express is good value compared to most other DAW software at that pricepoint, but it is only intended as a 'Lite' version.
Some examples, off the top of my head, of differences not made really clear in the comparison list.
Input Objects:
In Pro you can use Input Objects to monitor incoming signal without rec-enabling a track. That doesn't sound much, on the face of it, but what it means is you can use external FX units (hardware) as inserts in tracks (or busses) just like plugins, and bounce them with the mix. it also means you acn monitor what you are playing into Logic Pro with plugin FX applied, but record dry so you can hear your guitar with the reverb, or whatever, but still have the recorded dry signal so you can change the FX settings later.
Pro has some very handy environment objects. The main one being the Trabsformer object. But also another extremely useful object is TouchTracks.
If you've ever played with Ableton Live you would have noticed you can triger clips with the keyboard in all different ways (loop, gate loop, one shot etc.) Well TouchTracks does that with MIDI regions.(I have a feeling that feature in Live was modeled after Logic's TouchTracks' as it is incredibly similar.)
They are only a few examples of a whole range of differences. If all the differences were itemized in the 'comparison chart' it would be about 3 pages long.
All I am saying is, don't take the comparison chart as the definitive list of differences.
yes, Express is a good basic tool and you can do a lot with it, with some imagination.
The SOS author's claim that:
you're paying less than a third of the price of Logic Pro and getting over 90 percent of the functionality."
is not true in totality.
It may be true to someone who has never dabbled in audio software before, because it takes literally years to become fully conversant with every function in Logic Pro, and no-one uses absolutely everything.
But for serious users, who have big demands, in my opinion, Express is less than 30% of Pro's functionality.
