One Way to Fix the "System Extension Cannot Be Used, AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext" Error...

I found (one) way to fix this error...well, at least it worked for me (see below):
There seem to be various threads addressing this issue and no "one" way is the right way for everyone. I'm running my Macbook on OS X 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard). Once I installed the iTunes update, two things happened: my iPhone became corrupted when I sync'd via USB and then my iTunes stopped recognizing the iPhone as a "sync-able" device -- meaning it would show up on iTunes but when you went to click sync, the sync button was unavailable.
I tried locating the .kext file, deleting it, repairing it, replacing with an older version, entered different commands in terminal but I kept getting the same error. Ultimately, I fixed the problem fairly simply, but it may not be something everyone is willing to do. If you have an external hard-drive and had your computer hooked up to Time Machine, this is what you should do:
Hopefully you'd been backing your computer up automatically fairly recently, and you have some this stored on an external hard drive via Time Machine from before iTunes 11.4 was downloaded onto your computer.
If you haven't done so already, and your iTunes library isn't corrupt, Backup your entire iTunes library to an external hard-drive (if you don't care about your library, ignore this step...this procedure might not work, however, if your first backup of your iTunes library is via version 11.4. If you go through all of these steps and you encounter the same problem, restore your itunes to an older version via Time Machine, then redo steps)
To do this, create a new Folder on your hard drive and call it "iTunes"
Go into your iTunes preferences > Advanced > under "iTunes Media folder location" we want it to say /Volumes/(Your Hard Drive Name)/iTunesNext to the "iTunes Media folder location" dialogue box, it should read CHANGE or RESET. Click CHANGE, navigate to your external hard drive and locate the newly created iTunes folder...your computer should automatically start to transfer your library to the new destination.
Backup and "new files" on your computer that you create since updating your iTunes to version 11.4 (i.e. new iCal entries, documents)
Backup your important files (I have mine in dropbox but chose to be safe and backed them up on an external hard drive as well)
Once you have everything saved, you're going to want to go through the process of completely restoring your entire computer (essentially wiping it clean).
To do this on Snow Leopard, you need to have the Mac OS X Snow Leopard Installing disc.
Insert disc > when the Install screen pops up, select Utilities... > it will then prompt you to Restart your computer
After your computer restarts, it will prompt you to reinstall Snow Leopard or select a different option from Utilities which can now be found at the top of your screen on the toolbar. From there, select the option that is along the lines of Restore from Backup Using Time Machine and then select which backup you want to restore your computer to ... since iTunes 11.4 went live on Sept. 10th, I would restore to any date before that.
When your computer restores itself to your chosen backup, your computer should be exactly as it was on that date, iTunes included. It's as if nothing ever happened.
To do this on any later OS X, I believe you have to restart your computer and then hold COMMAND+R before the grey screen appears. From here, I believe it will prompt you similarly to the Snow Leopard procedures 1-3 as listed just above this bullet point.
When your computer prompts you to update iTunes to version 11.4 from whatever version you reverted back to, DO NOT UPDATE. Keep your old iTunes version and wait for this thing to be addressed by Apple.
This procedure worked for me and although it's a bit tedious, it fixed both my iTunes and iPhone errors. Note: I did have to erase and restore my iPhone through an old backup via iTunes once iTunes was working again. Try it out. See if it works for you. MAKE SURE YOU BACKUP YOUR FILES BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANY FULL SYSTEM RESTORE.

There's more to it than this IMHO.  Here is my explanation:
If I go back in my Time Machine backups and restore the previous version before I installed iTunes 11.4, the version of that same kext was also listed as being "7.0" despite being older and twice the size (120400 bytes vs. 63024 bytes in the 11.4-installed version).
(The older version is "BuildVersion 305" and "SourceVersion 122000000000000"; the new 11.4 version is "BuildVersion 417" and "SourceVersion 113000000000000".)
The real problem is this:
/System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext/Contents/_CodeSignature used to contain
-rw-r--r--+ 1 root  wheel  172 Jan 31  2014 CodeDirectory
-rw-r--r--+ 1 root  wheel    92 Jan 31  2014 CodeRequirements
-rw-r--r--+ 1 root  wheel  1745 Jan 31  2014 CodeResources
-rw-r--r--+ 1 root  wheel  4064 Jan 31  2014 CodeSignature
/System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext/Contents used to contain symbolic links down into there:
lrwxr-xr-x+ 1 root  wheel    28 Jun 12  2012 CodeDirectory@ -> _CodeSignature/CodeDirectory
lrwxr-xr-x+ 1 root  wheel    31 Jun 12  2012 CodeRequirements@ -> _CodeSignature/CodeRequirements
lrwxr-xr-x+ 1 root  wheel    28 Jun 12  2012 CodeSignature@ -> _CodeSignature/CodeSignature
When iTunes 11.4 was installed via Software Update/App Store, it removed CodeDirectory/CodeRequirements/CodeSignature but it did not remove the corresponding symbolic links.  Presumably that is what triggered the "cannot be used" pop-up message.
Trashing the kext and installing it from the downloaded 11.4 .dmg does not create the symbolic links, thus avoiding the problem.
Obviously rolling back to the previous (Jan 2014) kext will fix the problem as well as the symbolic links point to files that exist.
(I'm really curious to know what happened between BuildVersion 305 and BuildVersion 417 that caused it to shrink nearly by half.  It looks to me like the Code Signing stuff got ripped out - Lord knows why.)

Hi guys/girls, having a problem. I'm trying to install Sims 4 on my IMac and everything seems fine until it says select which language to use with the software. I brought it off Origin.com and when I try to proceed with selecting my language it gives me this.
Now I'm wonderig is this a Mac issue or EA/Origin issue?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Open the Script Editor in the /Applications/AppleScript/ or /Applications/Utilities/ folder, copy and paste the entire following line into it, and press the Run button:
do shell script "chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext" with administrator privileges
If it doesn’t work, choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu, provide /System/Library/Extensions/ as the path, throw the AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext item away, and reinstall iTunes.

i'm pretty sure its a driver for network device (ethernet or wifi), both of them works fine for me, and i have no idea how to update/reinstall drivers under MacOS.
    any idea/tip/guess can help,

    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash. Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space. If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application. In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder. You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder. You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder. Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item. Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder. Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences. Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab. Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS. Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term. Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default. You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, Easy Find, instead. Download Easy Find at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder. Usually with the same name as the program or the developer. The item generally has a ".pkg" extension. Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications. Here is a selection:
    AppZapper
    Automaton
    Hazel
    CleanApp
    Yank
    SuperPop
    Uninstaller
    Spring Cleaning
Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • System extension cannot be used - GeneIOUSBCFSubclass.kext

I just installed the iTunes 9.0.2 update. Toward the end of the install, an error message popped up:
    System extension cannot be used
    .../SYstem/Library/Extensions/GeneIOUSBCFSubclass.kext...
But the update appeared to complete successfully.
    Any ideas?

That appears to be some (antiquated?) third party driver for an external USB device.

Received following message during installation of an iTunes update today (9/16/14):  System extension cannot be used. The system extension “//System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext” was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product’s vendor for an update.  What is to be done about it?

Thanks for the reply.  I'm not experienced in the inner workings of the iMac system and its programs, so please follow my train of thought as I try to find and understand your reply.
You wrote that I should check out "Please see - AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext error on installing iTunes update" and I did so.
There I found your reply of 9/1014 7:06 PM to j'ski stating: "There is a larger thread here which you may want to follow - system extension cannot be used AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext ."
And an earlier Post by Greg Earle of 9/10/14 5:57 PM stating: " You would have been better off doing open /System/Library/Extensions and then finding the AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext kernel extension icon in the Finder window that came up and moving it to the Trash."
And a subsequent Post on 9/15/14 at 2:59 PM by Rob Maurer stating: "This method worked perfectly for me.  I am on a Mac Pro running Mountain Lion. Dragged the kext file to trash (I use EasyFind. Found the file, Revealed in Finder, dragged to Trash, entered admin password when requested). Downloaded iTunes 11.4 from the website. Installed from that download. Checked for that kext file in EasyFind again and found it had a creation date of 7/29/14 (the trashed one had a creation date from 2009). No more error messages.  ITunes opens fine.  Everything good. Will not update on my MacBook Pro until they fix this issue.
All of which leave me wondering - what is your answer/recommendation?  Do I drag the kext file to trash, download iTunes 11.4 from the website and install it from that download, check for that kext file again to see if it has a later date than the initial one?  And, if so, seed if iTunes opens okay or not?  And if so, do not update iTunes again until Apple fixes whatever is wrong?

I submitted the above question, later finding that it has been answered by Buller already.  No one need reply as Buller's answer seems to solve the problem for others, and I'll try that.

  • System Extension Cannot Be Used?  How do I fix?

    Hello
I recently updated to Mavericks using 10.9.4, and installed a Canon Pro 100 printer.  Ever since I did this I am getting the following message.
    "System extension cannot be used
The system extension “/System/Library/Extensions/IOFireWireMxBt.kext” was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product’s vendor for an update."
Also, what is "IOFirwWireMx.kext"?  If I knew what is was, I would try to re-install it, as it suggests.  But I don't know what this is referring to.  How do I fix this?
    Thanks for your help.

I'm afraid there is no simple solution without a backup of the Mac before 10.9 was installed. There are user tips that explain the process, but it will vary for each user depending on what is used on the Mac.
Apple: Restoring a previous OS X version
How to revert OS X back from Mavericks
I have seen that many users complain about 10.9 being slow/ worse than "whatever was installed before".
Personally I find it comparable in performance to other OS's.
The trouble seems to be that users have migrated with many old apps installed from previous OS versions. Old system extensions & other background tasks that can make the OS perform badly. If installed software is not compatible with 10.9 it can cause errors (as the old Maxtor software illustrated).
The basic options are to clean up the OS (find out how to uninstall all the old stuff) or to reinstall the OS without the old apps.
The process usually involves creating an EtreCheck report to show people here what is installed. From there you can either decide to backup your data & reinstall or attempt to clean out some older apps (assuming that is what is causing the trouble).
    http://etresoft.com/etrecheck
It helps if you include descriptions of what the actual issues are, e.g. Finder takes x mins to open folders.
You will also want to make a full backup onto another disk. Do you know how to do that?
I'd suggest you mark this thread as solved & then create a new thread so that the topic is clear. Post a link to it from here if you want me & Kappy to see it

You recently updated iTunes to v.11.4? This message has popped up on many a Mac screen when this version was first made available, because this kext was obviously faulty.
You should try to download iTunes 11.4 again from Apple's website: the new version bears the same name, but this kernel extension has been updated, and the issues it was causing are now a thing of the past.
    Should solve your problem, too...

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your  Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

  • "System Extension cannot be used" problem...

Okay, so I have a brand new MacBook Pro, running the latest OS. Now, for some reason, I keep getting this error notice: "System Extension cannot be used."
I've been through DISK UTILITY, verified and repaired all "disk permissions," as well even "verified disk" (although nothing wrong or damaged have been found). I have even gone as far as ERASING my entire disk and RE-installing everything. However, no luck.
The thing is, verifying and repairing the disk permissions DO help, but there are still a number of extensions that do NOT get repaired. I don't know if this is significant, but I've had this problem 4 times in a row now, and after repairing the disk permission, the SAME EXACT extensions keep popping up as errors:
    "System Extension cannot be used"
    /System/libraryextensions/BJUSBLoad.kext
    /System/libraryextensions/EPSONUSBPrintClass

FYI: my ipod touch doesn't synch with itunes after the above errors are displayed, and I have to re-download itunes.
What do I do? Why is this happening? Is there a way to fix these extensions? Is this happening possibly due to 3rd-party plug-ins being used (am using Spectrasonics Trillian and Omnisphere with Logic Pro 9 - although this is running perfectly on my iMac AND on another MacBook Pro)?
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated, as I've got no more hair to pull out due to frustration! Thank you in advance!

But worse : all my new machines have been infected by the same error, because I did copy the oleder machine when installing them. Apple does not seem to care about this problem.
The solution should probably be that apple should make a fix, looking for old and uncompatible extensions and delete them or get the new ones from all the makers.
Apple! Who is going to face the problem ?

so i spotted that the system library as well as the home library had permissions blocked for the administrator, so i unlocked all enclosed items permissions.
i already had issues being brought to senior advisor attention over 1,5 years now, about hangs and freezes. mostly hangs.
no one so far has been able to fix them.
well now spotting these warnings, after i allowed all permissions inside both libraries, have warnings show up.
i gather these are not prepperly installed softwares, but i cant figure out what softwares they could be, so i can take care of it.
so 4 warnings shows up :

There isn't an "administrator" so who did you add and what permissions did you set.
In Get Info, they should be
    system    read & write
    wheel       read Only
    everyone  read only
The posix permissions, owner, and group should be
    rwxr-xr-x  root wheel
    with ACE "group:everyone deny delete"
You may be able to recover by repairing permissions in Disk Utility, but you may have to reinstall the OS.
