Open Applications in New Workspaces under GNOME Shell

I was wondering if I could make new applications automatically open in a new workspace when they are opened. And, if possible, if I can make anything fullscreen (and only fullscreen things) go to a new workspace. For example, I would like it if Totem stays on my current workspace, but moves to a new one when I make it go fullscreen.
I have tried the Auto Move Windows extension, but it only allows me to make an application go to a certain workspace instead of just a new one.

I agree with item 2 and have thought about this before. Actually, I just added a comment to https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=676832 about it.

  • Disabling the creation of sample application for new workspace

    Hi,
    Just wondering if it's possible to disable the sample the application that is created when ever you create a new workspace? Also so that it doesn't create the 'demo' tables and associated sequences. Pretty sure we have this configured at work, but can't remember how we did it.
    Any help appreciated.

  • New Maintainer of gnome-shell-theme-nord

    Hello Friends!
    I've been using Arch for a year and a half, give or take, and decided it's high time to start giving back. So I've decided to adopt the gnome-shell-theme-nord and have already updated the PKGBUILD by adding wget to the dependencies and removing ttf-droid (as requested) and gnome-shell-extension-user-themes (because it no longer exists, integrated to the shell) from the optional dependencies.
    I'm not sure if there's really anything else to do, the AUR wiki page doesn't have any more steps AFAIK. If you have any tips, corrections, etc. for me, please let me know!

    hi,
    your screenshot doesn't work. Maybe you post another one which is working so we could help you.
    (your english is not that bad, dude )
    €: oh if I copy the url of the image it works. ok this looks weird. have you selected a new theme after deleting yours?

  • Open application in new window

    I want to have a link on a page which calls the login screen of the application in a new window.
    I put the following into my page template
    a href="http://ae-pt-03:7778/iworld/intsys01_v6.html" target="_blank">New</a>
    When you click on the link it does indeed open a new window and displays the application login screen. I can log in and perform tasks.
    However when I go back to the original window and click on any other link it logs me out and I have to login again.
    Anyone know how I can open the second window without being logged out in the first. This does not happen if I open a new window session manually from the start menu and type in the application address.
    I am using IE7 but IE8 behaves in the same manner.

    When you are opening a new window are you not passing the current session ID in the url? Which means that you are opening a new window for the same session.
    Can you please right click on the link and copy the shortcut/link address and reply that to me.
    Thanks

  • Open application in new window and new session

    The problem is if the application is already open and we try to open another application by clicking at the
    shortcut, it opens it in a new browser but it does not prompt for the password.
    We want the application to prompt for the password each and every time.
    we use the following html to launch the application:
    <HTML>
    <HEAD>
    <SCRIPT LANGUAGE="Javascript">
    function OpenUrl(url)
    PopUp = window.open(url, 'X', height=768,width=1024, LOCATION=no, MENUBAR=no, STATUS=no, TOOLBAR=no,SCROLLBARS=no, RESIZABLE=yes');
    window.opener = null
    window.close()
    return false
    win.focus();
    </SCRIPT>
    </HEAD>
    <BODY OnLoad="OpenMyApp('http://.......................')">
    </BODY>
    </HTML>
    I would really appreciate your help.
    Kumar

    There are several ways to do this.
    One way is to create your own custom login screen and send the user to it instead of the application. Once they login, then send them to the desired application.
    You'll need two user accounts to do this. The first is to lauch the custom login screen, and the second is to launch your application. To avoid two database logins, write the code in your custom login screen to automatically log them into the second account.
    Another way is to create a different user account for each application. You may need to work with your DBA to get the accounts created with the proper permissions so they access only the tables they need.

  • Error when trying to open up a new workspace

    I am new at this and am trying to use JDeveloper to create a simple program. I try to bring up the developer by clicking on javaw or java executable in the bin folder and I receive the error:
    Cannot find the class main. Program will exit.
    What do I need to do in order to use this to compile a program? I tried to search for an answer in google and I only could find the part about making sure I have the correct pathname. I tried to do the command java -cp . javax in the command prompt and that didn't work.
    Please help.

    To start JDeveloper go to [jdev-root]\jdev\bin and run the jdev.exe file there.

  • Opening applications on new computer

    I bought a new computer and I have the adobe cloud apps on one other mac and one surface pro. I would like to stop using it on the older mac and start using it on my new mac. How do I do that?

  • Gnome-shell like WM/Application

    Does anyone know of an application that can do what gnome shell does by displaying all open windows in a nice overview via a shortcut?
    I love the way gnome works but hate the breakage and bugs and slowness.

    Compiz has a plugin that does something similar (or, it did when I last looked into it several years ago).
    All the best,

    Do you have networkmanager installed?
    Nevermind, while that does seem to be an error with nmapplet, it would appear that you also have a problem with policykit.  Are you using a desktop manager to load gnome?
    Edit: Eh, nevermind that also.  I'm guessing the bottom two lines is a segmentation fault.  Not sure what is going on with the gnome-shell-calendar-server.  Hopefully someone more familiar with gnome than me shows up to help you.

  • Gnome shell and proprietary Nvidia

    Hello,
    I've been having a weird issue with gnome shell on my notebook
    when using the proprietary nvidia driver for my Quadro NVS 160M.
    All packages are up to date, this has been happening for several weeks
    now.
    Usually it works flawlessly, very fast, swift, but sometimes - and I can't
    put my finger on a cause - it seems to choke on the desktop effects.
    When that happens every time an effect utilizing resizing stuff or using
    transparency comes up (like, alt-tab, using activites, tooltip fading in)
    the system becomes unresponsive and unbearably slow for some time.
    I can still move the mouse, but the screen only refreshes every
    few seconds. This lasts for a long time, sometimes minutes, sometimes
    forever (10 minutes is the longests i've waited before rebooting).
    I can't even switch to a terminal and kill Xorg or anything.
    The time it takes seems random and not dependend on the length or
    complexity of the animation - but the longer it's been going the higher
    is the chance that it stays for very long.
    I'm a bit frustrated with the issue. With the nouveau driver it works
    without any shennanigans like that, but of course the 3D Performance
    is horrid and I don't have that many reserves to sacrifice with the card.
    So did anybody experience something similar or might have an idea
    for a solution?

    I know that I'm a bit late and I know that maybe it is not the right solution but I eventually managed to get full screen under gnome shell placing minecraft window on a new workspace and then toggling full screen mode. It worked for me, I hope this may be useful to someone.

  • Force iView to open in a new window when using NavigationTarget

    Scenario - Portal Version 6.0 - NW2004  SP16 - WAS 6.40
    A Custom iView is used to gain access to an application running outside of the portal.  The user's credentails to the target application are recorded in the portal's UME via user mapping.
    I want a user to be able to click a hyperlink to this iView that has been embedded in an email, and have the user gain access to the target application by 'going via the portal'.  The url that I use is of the form:
    http //<my_portal_server>/irj/portal?NavigationTarget=navurl://49a8add355f836061e6279f389cdc72e&open=/page&id=100&proc=10067&flag=1
    This is working, the user is first taken to the portal's login page, and upon successful login to the SAP portal, user is then directed to the target iView, and is logged in automatically to the target application, and able to use the target application.
    >BUT EVEN though the iveiw is configured to open in a new window it does not. It always opens in the main content area, and it always opens in this area in a height of about 40 pixels.  The iView properties are set to FULLPAGE.
    >If I invoke this iView using the portal's standard built in navigation, it does open in a new window
    >It just won't open in a new window when using direct URL to the iView WHY?
    How can I get the target iView to open in a new window under all circumstances?
    Do I need to pass more information in the URL?
    Are there a standard list of URL parameters somewhere that influence the behaviour of the NavigationTarget?  I have seen reference to 'context', 'mode' etc but can't find a list of valid parameters?

  • Gimp slow on gnome shell

    Hello,
    Im experiencing a slow performance of gimp under gnome-shell (zooming in-out, dragging the image using spacebar, etc), however it works fine in other DEs like kde, mate, openbox.
    Has anyone noticed smtg similar? any hints to try?
    I'm using an up2date archlinux and gimp-git.
    thanks in advance
    Matias

    Just in case its somehow related, Im using this in .xinitrc
    export VDPAU_NVIDIA_NO_OVERLAY=1
    I've tried using the regular kernel and the lts version, so to try with both nvidia versions. Same results.
    Also I've tried with a new user so that no particular settings were set. Nothing different.
    thanks again

  • Gnome-shell not run automatically

    hi.
    when gnome 3.8 came out, I was using gnome classic (compatibility mode) and the option to switch back to gnome-shell disapeared in gnome tweak tool. So I had no option to switch to gnome-shell. I never mind continue to use metacity and gnome classic in compatibility mode.
    Now in 3.10 I don't even get a mouse cursor and font rendering is awfull. So I have to use gnome-shell and not metacity.
    How do I do so that gnome-shell is automatically run when I launch a gnome session ??
    I have tried to add a gnome-shell.desktop in ~/.config/autostart or add gnome-shell with gnome-session-properties at start. Nothing worked.
    At last, I was able to prevent metacity to run at launch by removing metacity.desktop in autostart or removing a session file lying around.
    Now, I have to open a terminal and manually run gnome-shell.
    Help.
    p.s.: how does gdm launch gnome-shell for you ?

    It works.
    What I have done is to remove ~/.config/gnome-sessions/sessions/gnome-fallback.session and replace it with gnome.session
    But I got a "ooops something wrong happened" when I tried to login so I think what fixes it was running
    gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.session gnome
    from a terminal run from a console with startx and gnome-session --session=gnome in ~/.xinitrc
    I got help from http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-7385192.html
    a post from an arch user posting on gentoo forum. WTF !

    Hello,
    how can I change the icon (not the dimension, but only the icon picture) under application of gnome shell? After the installation of amule-adnza-svn, the application icon is the default one.
    I try to search on google and on the forum, but I didn't find anything to solve this.
