Opening PDF in Illustrator. Some font characters outlined, some not.

Here's what I'm experiencing...
Let's say I create a poster with a couple of blocks of text in Illustrator, using a single font. Then, I generate a PDF of the poster.
Now, on the same computer, I open the PDF in Illustrator, and Illustrator pops-up an alert saying some text has been outlined to preserve appearance. And, indeed, here and there throughout the text, some words, combination of words, or whole lines of text have been outlined, but most of the text is still live.
Why does this happen? There's no difference, font-wise, between the text that is untouched, and the text that got outlined. Same face, same weight. In fact, the same word, set the same way, will be untouched in one line, and be outlined elsewhere in the text. It's really baffling.

No, there are no transparency effects or objects in the final file.
As a matter of fact, the file is purposely made without transparency effects because the printer my client sends the pdf to still uses an ancient RIP that cannot accurately process anything newer than PDF 1.3.
I'm not at my studio right now, so I can't get a screenshot for you.

    Hello waitingone,
    please try this (all terms are translated from my German programs to my best knowledge):
    1. Did the creator of the pdf file enable the import options?
    2. See import options: choose an other visibility option for your layer.
    3. Let you show the import options and click into one with a black background and try these out (often a gray is selected).
    4. See trimming: try the different modes there. Often works: "Media".
    5. Is the pdf file (eg from Word) correctly created?
    6. Is the PDF file protected? >>> no import possible.
    7. If that does not help, store the pdf file in Acrobat, repair possible errors, run the PDF Optimizer before placing in InDesign.
    Good luck!

  • Gradients dropping out when opening PDFs in Illustrator

    Hi everyone. I work for a large format printing company. We receive thousands of files every year from many different designers. We started to notice that gradients would drop out of some PDFs when opening them in Illustrator but they would preview fine when opened in Acrobat. I searched high and low for an explanation for this glitch. The only response I received is "Stop opening exported PDFs in Illustrator." This is an unsatisfactory answer for someone that needs to preflight directly in the Illustrator program. I've done a ton of research and have been racking my brain for the last 2 years and have finally found sufficient workarounds for this issue. The downfall with these workarounds: all spot colors located in the gradients will convert to CMYK mixes. I'm still researching to see if there is a way to keep spot colors intact in these areas.
    A little back story: InDesign is converting the gradients into something called NChannel. It enables more accurate handling of color blending by including additional dot gain and color mixing info. Both InDesign and Acrobat have the ability to display these elements whereas Illustrator, from what I’m finding, does not. Which is why we’re seeing gradient elements drop out when opened in Illustrator.
    Workaround for CMYK Gradients
    Open PDF exported from INDD in Acrobat
    Go to Tools > Print Production > Convert Colors
    Object Type: Smooth Shade (this tells Acrobat to hone in on Gradients only)
    Color Type: DeviceCMYK
    Check Embed next to Conversion Profile (should be SWOP)
    Expand Document Colors on the right and Select DeviceCMYK in Color Spaces then click ok
    Save the PDF
    Workaround for 1 Spot Color in Gradients (Converts Spot Color located in Gradient to CMYK – all other Spots stay intact)
    Open PDF exported from INDD in Acrobat
    Go to Tools > Print Production > Convert Colors
    Object Type: Smooth Shade (this tells Acrobat to hone in on Gradients only)
    Color Type: Spot Color
    Check Embed next to Conversion Profile (should be SWOP)
    Expand Document Colors on the right and Select the Spot that is located in the Gradient in Color Spaces then click ok
    Save the PDF
    Workaround for 2 Spot Colors in Gradients (Converts Spot Colors located in Gradient toCMYK – all other Spots stay intact)
    Expand Document Colors on the right and Select the DeviceN spot color that is located in the Gradient in Color Spaces then click ok
    Save the PDF
    Please test it and let me know if you run into any issues with these workarounds.  I'm always looking for new problems to solve!

    you said--"...needs to preflight directly in the Illustrator program. I've done a ton of research and have been racking my brain for the last 2 years and have finally found sufficient workarounds for this issue"
    Your workarounds seem time consuming and (possibly) unnecessary for the following reasons:
    1. large format printers use 4-8 colors to achieve color (so spot colors shouldn't be an issue)
    2. Acrobat Pro has it's own 'preflight' function that works fairly well
    additionally (don't know if you know this) there is an add-on to acrobat called 'Pitstop' (google it) that allows just about any change/correction/alteration to be made to a PDF
    ...and...opening a PDF in illustrator (that wasn't created in illustrator--do you know how to determine this?) can lead to many problems i.e. gradients dropping out, text reflow, etc.
    as far as testing your workarounds, seriously, who has the time when there are tools available that make using them unnecessary (this assumes that you have created these 'workarounds' to match your worflow--but a nearly pure PDF workflow should work in this day and age, depending on your RIP and software).

  • Type not showing when opening pdf in Illustrator

    Here's a strange problem that I don't recall having seen before.
    I have a pdf file with diagrams of cupboards and tables with measurements. Everything looks o.k.
    I open it in Illie (CS3) and everything shows up except the type. It is point type and only the points are there. I can drag over the type where the letters should be and there IS something there (coloured black according to the Color palette) but no recognizeable letters. I tried copying the type from the pdf and pasting into Illie but still no luck. I have the font (Syntax Roman) but the only way I can get it to work properly is to type the text in again manually. Any ideas please?

    InDesign created this PDF and made the font a CID Identity-H font (not opentype, but similar in the respect that it has many more characters)
    I am not an expert on this topic so you may get a better response reposting this here or in the acrobat forum with a new topic (eg:  converting PDF CID fonts to .ai).
    This tech note shows how to fix the problem if you have the original InDesign file.

  • Can't place or open pdf in Illustrator

    I edited a couple images in Photoshop for postcards to be printed, I converted them to CMYK and then saved as PDFs. I then tried to open them in Illustrator to finish up the project, but when I tried to place the images a box pops up that says "unknown error has occured" and when I try and open the images, all you can see is a blank artboard.
    Help!
    Charlotte
    ps. I'm using Creative Cloud

    Instead of placing the PDFs in Illustrator, try placing the Photoshop files instead (Photoshop and Illustrator usually play nice together.) Also, if the images were saved as Photoshop PDFs, I have found that some Photoshop PDFs have little quirks in them. When this happens to me, I usually go directly to my Acrobat Pro app and open the Photoshop PDF there. Then while the file is open in Actobat, I choose "Save As" and give it a different name. For some strange reason this seems to cure the problem (Photoshop PDFs and Acrobat PDFs just don't seem to be the same.) I hope this helps.

  • Placed Pdf in illustrator missing fonts no warning

    I have placed a pdf in illustrator that has embedded subset fonts. In illustrator the fonts display wrong but I get no warning that fonts are missing. When I click on the substituted font the type panel shows it as the correct font name. Are there any cases of a file with missing fonts not displaying a warning? If I save the file and reopen it I do get the font warning.

    Possibly there are different versions of the font. The name may be the same, but the document could refer to an older/ different version and only when you save does that info get updated. Hard to tell without actually seeing the Doc. What does Acrobat say exactly about the font? Is there a doifference in that info when you re-create the text locally from within AI and save a PDF with the same options?

    Hi,
    From your description, I know you want to open SharePoint 2013 PDF files with default application.
    You could re-install your Adobe Reader, and then test this issue. Also, you can have test in another computer with Adobe Reader.
    If this issue is still exist, please refer to this article:

  • How to open an Arabic PDF in Illustrator CS3 ME without outlining the font?

    Hi,
    I need to use Illustrator CS3 ME (Middle East) in order to edit some pages of an Arabic PDF file.
    Now, the problem is that as soon as I open the page in Illustrator, all of the Arabic text gets outlined. The English text doesn't get outlined.
    I need to edit the text, so this is a big problem.
    I don't have the original source files (InDesign).
    Also, it is too much editing to be doing in Acrobat.
    Is there some sort of solution for this?
    Thanks,
    Ola

    Hi,
    The font is Arial, which fully supports Arabic, as far as I know.
    How do I enable glyph protection in the prefs?
    How do I set the glyph substituion in the type palette? I am sorry for the
    ignorance, but I usually work with InDesign, and quite rarely with
    Ilustrator. This is a special case for me...
    The formatting is very ordinary. Nothing special.
    I really hope there is some solution for this....

    What fonts does it use? Is glyph protection enabled in teh prefs? What are
    the settings for glyph substitution in the type palette? Does it have any
    specific formatting? If it gets outlined, it was probably mangled in ways
    that prevent using the life font or the relevant font is missing
    alltogether...

  • Opening pdf in illustrator does not display  correct font

    I have a 30 page pdf form that says it is in timesnewroman font. I of course have Times New Roman. How do I make illustrator recognize the font? It is looking for a font that does not have spaces inbetween the words. When I load the font up it simply replaces all the characters with ??. I tried renaming my times new roman the same way but it still won't recognize it.
    I have Adobe Illustrator CS 2.

    Hello,
    Just like to share my experience with this issue as I too sometime get work that are provided to me from the client in pdf format, and I too sometime get the ???. if possible I try to do the find and replace font technique if the text boxes aren't broken up into sections when I put it into AI, if the text are in section then I'll get spaces in between the words after replacing the font.
    What I can do then is delete all the ones that are spaced out but leaving the the very first word or text box and then open up the pdf then hightlight & Copy the text that I need and go back in to AI and paste it in the first text box. Then press the enter key to move whatever text I need to the next line etc. if need be.
    If the above don't work I usally contact the client and ask them to provide the font if possible or ask them to turn the text into outline for me to work on. But if it's in outline then that means I won't be able to type if I needed to edit something.

  • Problem with PDF export and embedded font (characters disappear)

    Designer: Crystal Reports 2008 SP 2
    Engine: CR4E 2.0 SP2 (runtime_12.2.203)
    Hi there!
    we found a problem in the pdf export. It seems like there would be a problem with the embedded fonts, the problem is as follows:
    Rpt file with, for example only a text box which contains the german string " Änderungs Schlüssel ".
    Export the Rpt file with CR4E to a pdf file.
    When we open the pdf file in Adope Reader 8, the text appears to be correct,
    but if we print the PDF file from the Adope Reader, the text changes to " nderungs Schl sselu201C,
    here we are missing ther german umlaute.
    When we open the file for example with an alternative PDF reader like Foxit Reader, there they are also missing.
    After i found some posts here in the forum, there are people facing the same problem, since i couldn't find a solution in the forum, we build a little workaround for it that works for us.
    For all of you that have the same problem here the workaround:
    We used the IText JAVA library, this jar can can help as to fix the PDF file so the text is displayed correctly.
    Here the code:
    ReportClientDocument doc = new ReportClientDocument();
    doc.setReportAppServer(ReportClientDocument.inprocConnectionString);
    doc.open("C:\XY.rpt", OpenReportOptions._openAsReadOnly);
    //... database logon,.....
    InputStream inputStream = doc.getPrintOutputController().export(ReportExportFormat.PDF);
    inputStream = PDFHealer.heal(inputStream);
    //... write the stream some where

    The helper class using IText:
    import java.io.ByteArrayInputStream;
    import java.io.ByteArrayOutputStream;
    import java.io.IOException;
    import java.io.InputStream;
    import com.lowagie.text.Document;

       public static InputStream heal(InputStream in) throws DocumentException, IOException
          try
             ByteArrayOutputStream out = new ByteArrayOutputStream();
             PdfReader reader = new PdfReader(in);
             // we retrieve the total number of pages
             int n = reader.getNumberOfPages();
             // step 1: creation of a document-object
             Document document = new Document();
             // step 2: we create a writer that listens to the document
             PdfWriter writer = PdfWriter.getInstance(document, out);
             // step 3: we open the document
             document.open();
             // step 4: we add content
             PdfContentByte cb = writer.getDirectContent();
             int i = 0;
             while( i < n )
                document.newPage();
                i++;
                PdfImportedPage page1 = writer.getImportedPage(reader, i);
                cb.addTemplate(page1, 0, 0);
             // step 5: we close the document
             document.close();
             ByteArrayInputStream ret = new ByteArrayInputStream(out.toByteArray());
             out.close();
             return ret;
          finally
             in.close();

  • Open PDF with Illustrator

    Tags (edit): none (add)
    I have PDF files created in Illustrator; saved as .pdf that until recently I could right click the PDF icon giving me an option "Open With...Illustrator" which would then open the file in Illustrator CS4 and allow me to edit the PDFs.
    Now when I right click to open with, Illustrator opens to Welcome Window as if I had just opened the program with the Illustrator icon but does not actually open the PDF.
    From within Illustrator I can use the open process to go to the file location and open with no issue.
    Something that tells Illustrator to open that file seems to have been lost.

    Click on its icon once to select it.
    While holding the shift key down, right click on the icon. (Note: Holding the Shift key down is not necessary in Windows 2000 and Windows XP.)

  • Java or HTML to open PDF in a new window in Adobe Reader, not IE

    Good morning,
    We have an interactive PDF document that has Flash built in.  We sized to match the screen settings within our company. However, the way we have it posted, when a user clicks the link to open the PDF document, it opens inside of Internet Explorer.  The IE browser and button bar take up space we need for the document so users don't have to scroll.  What I would really like is to be able to have the user click the link and it opens the document in Adobe Reader instead of IE.  Is there a way to do this?
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Eric

    You need an HTML forum, such as Dreamweaver, to figure out the parameters you use to open the file
    Your question has nothing to do (that I can see) with Acrobat or even Reader (which is a different forum anyway) and everything to do with the HTML commands your web designer needs to use when the file link is clicked from a browser
