Optimizing communication with database image archive

Hi!
I'm making a java program to show the contents in a image-database which is sorted in folders. I'm displaying this in a DefaultMutableTreeNode model. When you click on a imagefile, it's displayed next to the folders.
I'm wondering if any of you have any ideas how to optimize the communication between the database and the client?
I can't retrieve all the files at once and then display the tree, it could be gb of information.
So I'm wondering if I should send a DB call and get the files for each folder when opened? Or download the names of the files and get every single image clicked with a new DB call?
Or....Any ideas??
Thanks :-)

I can't retrieve all the files at once and then
display the tree, it could be gb of information. Just display the image meta-data. What do you need to get all the images themselves for? They don't even provide the information you need for the tree.
So I'm wondering if I should send a DB call and get
the files for each folder when opened? Or download
the names of the files and get every single image
clicked with a new DB call? I'd do the latter. Much faster - otherwise, openeing a big folder takes a looooong time.

  • Communication with database using TCP sockets connection

    Hi all,
    I am bit of a newbie when it comes to databases. In a project I realised over te passed few weeks, I communicated with an 11g database using an application I created with VS Express. It uses an ODBC connection. I now want to connect a PLC to the same database. These PLC's don't have the ability to install an ODBC client so I need something different.
    I am easily able to open a TCP socket on the PLC and send data from there. I would like to know if I can start a TCP sockets connection with our 11g server and send all queries directly. The other (already suggested) option would be to have the PLC connect to a PC that reads this information and hands it over to the ODBC connector, but that would mean I need an extra PC just to 'translate'.
    I have been searching these forums for socket, TCP and more and feel it is possible, but I need a good document as a reference to show/tell me how it's done.
    Thanks in advance,
    Marijn

    The TCP/IP interface to Oracle is undocumented (and hugely complex anyway). You'll need to use a higher layer iterface or setup your own infrastructure.
    We need more information about what is available to you inside the PLC.
    Can you use Java? If so, perhaps use thin JDBC?
    Can you sent HTTP requests? If so you could set up your own Web services to handle this.
    If you can only use C or C++, Oracle has interfaces there too.. it's called OCI (Oracle Call Interface) and thats as close to the networking layer as you can get.
    Finally if you can use .NET Oracle has a Fully Managed Oracle Data Provider for .NET that you could use.
    But if all you can do is super low level network access and none of the above then you will need to set up an intermediary as you mentioned.

    The answer that you do not want to hear is - spend some time
    learning HTML
    and CSS if you want to do things like this. It's true. DW
    will expect this
    knowledge on your part. Without it you will encounter
    continuous mysteries
    in your pages.

  • ECart not communicating with database

    Hello,
    My server has stated that they have created a DSN connection
    directly on the
    server for me because they do not allow saving to the root
    folder of a site.
    I have stored the .mdb file in "cgi_bin" under the name
    "mydatabases"
    They have said that all I need to do is add the following
    html code to the
    pages that need to connect to the database on the server:
    Set myconn = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
    myconn.open "thehuntingspace_com","",""
    I tried entering the above code into the BlueSky Shoe store
    examples without success.
    The below is the code that is used for eCart in VB. There are
    Dim variables
    for some of below characters that are pointing to the
    "Connections" folder
    in my list of files. This is the start of the "home.asp"
    doc's html.
    BEGINING OF HOME.ASP
    <%@LANGUAGE="VBSCRIPT" CODEPAGE="1252"%>
    <!--#include file="WA_eCart/WA_eCart_Definition_VB.asp"
    -->
    <!--#include file="WA_eCart/shoeCart_VB.asp" -->
    <!--#include file="Connections/connBlueSky.asp" -->
    <%
    Dim rsWFeatured
    Dim rsWFeatured_numRows
    Set rsWFeatured = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Recordset")
    rsWFeatured.ActiveConnection = MM_connBlueSky_STRING
    rsWFeatured.Source = "SELECT * FROM Products WHERE
    WomanFeatured <> 0"
    rsWFeatured.CursorType = 2
    rsWFeatured.CursorLocation = 3
    rsWFeatured.LockType = 1
    rsWFeatured.Open()
    rsWFeatured_numRows = 0
    %>
    <%
    The above "MM_connBlueSky_STRING" variable is defined in
    "Connections" with
    the following code:
    CONNECTIONS FOLDER
    <%
    ' FileName="Connection_odbc_conn_dsn.htm"
    ' Type="ADO"
    ' DesigntimeType="ADO"
    ' HTTP="false"
    ' Catalog=""
    ' Schema=""
    Dim MM_connBlueSky_STRING
    MM_connBlueSky_STRING = "dsn=BlueSkyData;"
    %>
    Where do I add:...
    Set myconn = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
    myconn.open "thehuntingspace_com","",""
    Also, what part of the begining of "home.asp" and
    "Connections" file should
    I delete/ change?
    I'm posting this in the DW8 forum because I have not received
    a response from WebAssist.

    trying to keep this fresh.

    thanks Holger for u r replay .
    due to the Microsoft article about the cu :
    I run only :
    Install-CsDatabase -ConfiguredDatabases -SqlServerFqdn FEBE.FQDN -Verbose
    Note In a coexistence environment that contains both Lync Server 2010 and Lync Server 2013 and in which the Central Management Service is located on a Lync Server 2010 pool, do not run the
    Install-CsDatabase -CentralManagementDatabase command. If you later move the Central Management Service to a Lync Server 2013 pool, you have to run the
    Install-CsDatabase -CentralManagementDatabase command to apply the changes.

  • I am facing a Problem with reading images from database

    Hi everybody..
    any help will be most appreciated, I am facing problem with reading images from database. I am pasting my code...
                    string connect = "datasource = localhost; port = 3306; username = root; password = ;";
                    MySqlConnection conn = new MySqlConnection(connect); // creating connecting string
                    MySqlCommand sda = new MySqlCommand(@"select * from management.add_products ", conn); //creating query
                    MySqlDataReader reader;
                    try
                        conn.Open(); // Opening Connection
                        reader = sda.ExecuteReader(); // Executing my Query..
                        while (reader.Read())
                            byte[] imgg = (byte[])(reader["Picture"]);
                            if (imgg == null)
                                pc1.Image = null;
                            else
                                MemoryStream mstream = new MemoryStream(imgg);
                                pc1.Image = System.Drawing.Image.FromStream(mstream);
    It says Parameter not Valid... i am reading all the images from database

    I agree with Viorel. You are getting the error because the format of the data is incorrect probably because the data was modify. It may not be the reading of the database the is incorrect, but the application that wrote the data into the database. You need
    to compare the imgg array data with the data before it was written to the database to see if the data matches.  I usually start by comparing the number of bytes which is easier to check then compare the actual to isolate which function is changing the
    byte count.
    An image is binary data.  The standard VS methods for reading and writing data (usually stream classes) default to ASCII encoding which will corrupt binary data.  The solution usually is to use UTF8 encoding instead of the default ascii encoding.
    Ascii encoding with stream often aligns the data and adds extra null bytes to the end of the data which can produce these type errors.

  • An error occurred while communicating with the database lightswitch

    Hi
    My Azure project was running just fine. I had made no changes but since yesterday when any user tries to login the get this error message:
    "an error occurred while communicating with the database lightswitch"
    I found a topic posted by "Mr Yossu" on this topic at
    http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/lightswitch/thread/655e4f03-d327-40fc-8d3b-8134e91ec2a4
    but his situation seems slightly different.
    In his case he says "I just updated (ie redeployed) it again, and when I try to log in, I get an error "An error occurred while communicating with the database."
    In my case I haven't updated anything.
    Any ideas will be greatly appreciated because my system is down until I find a resolution.
    Thanks in advance, Mark.
    Mark

    In checking the helpful suggestion "I guess there is something wrong with the authentication database table", this is what I have done so far.
    In the "Database Connections" step of the VS LS Azure publishing wizard, the "Specify the user conection:" is described as:
    "This connection will be used by the application to read and write data from the database"
    I click the "..." button and click to "Test" the connection and I get "Test connection succeeded".
    Next I logged in to SQLAzure and see
    this screen.
    At this point I'm unsure where to go with this.
    If anyone has an idea please let me know.

  • Best way for LV app to communicate with Database/Website?

    Hey all...I'm pretty experienced LabVIEW programmer but I'm in somewhat new territory here with communicating with a server/website.
    We are going to have an online SQL database that stores all data that we record for our application.  That database is going to have a web-based front end that will allow users to add/edit records.
    On the other end, we are going to have a LabVIEW application running on a PC that will allow its users to acquire/input data, and also add/edit records for the SQL database as well.  So basically a web-based client and a LV application client, which will most likely differ in functionality.
    There are going to be multiple PCs running LabVIEW client
    applications (let's assume upwards of 20 for now).  The idea would be
    that the user could:
    Query the SQL database for an existing entry, and then view/edit that entry or add records to it.
    Create an entirely new record.
    I have played around with the database connectivity toolkit and was able to communicate with the SQL databases online, no problem.  But, I'm not sure if that is the best way to do this yet because....
    Here are our challenges/constraints/specifications:
    Well we need this to be as low bandwidth intensive as possible as each LV client will be using a GPRS(cell phone) data connection to the internet which is pay per use.  Here are my thoughts on this so far:
    Having local copies of often accessed records on each machine with incremental updates to the server to minimize bandwidth for queries.
    Positives/Negatives?
    Send data to the server in a tagged format (XML maybe?) and then have a server-side application that parses the data and updates it to the database.
    Postives/Negatives?
    When updates are made using the website front-end...we would like at a minimum to be able to notify the LV client that an update has been made (like a Push data/notifier service).
    How to implement?
    POP3 e-mail for each LV client might be an option but is there something better?
    The data types that we are working with include all standard types (numeric, text, timestamps) and also includes images (jpg) and sound files (mp3) and potentially video in the future.
    Thanks and I'm looking for any and all feedback.  Let me know if the problem is still fuzzy...I will try to describe in better detail.

    Next question: Can the clients (easily) talk to each other -- if they can make a single file for updating the server, that could help, too.
    In any case, my first thought would be to put the different priority data in different directories. Have another labview (or even a different software package) running in the background, looking for new data (more often in the high priority directories). When it sees something, copy it to the server. When the server confirms the file has arrived, delete the original one. On the server side, it would have to let the client know it received the file and then unzip it/translate it/whatever and insert it into the database.
    Sound good so far?
    -Matt
    Matt,
    Sounds good so far.  Interesting idea of putting it in different directories, although I'd like to minimize file I/O as much as possible, especially between different VIs.  I'm also intrigued by using .zip files to cut down on file size.
    No, the clients won't easily be able to talk to each other.  All messaging between clients will go through the server as well.
    I guess I'm really looking for how to practically implement this as well.  Like what VIs (protocol) should I be using to get the data to the server?  TCP/UDP/SMTP/FTP/SQL connection/etc...I have little experience making apps communicate with a website/webserver.

    I have tested on my local environment and can't reproduce the issue, please check and test as below to provide us more details information due to this error message:
    Did you get the same issue when you don't insert the image from the DB?
    Please close the designer and reopen to design an new report the same as this one to see if the issue persist
    Please try to design the same report in report builder to see if you will get the same issue
    Please deploy the report to report server to have a test.

  • "The software required for communicating with the iPod is not installed..."

    I realize my explanation of my problem is long-winded, so if you want a shortened version, here it is:
    I've followed all the instructions trying nearly everything, and no matter what I do, iTunes gives me the error saying: "The software required for communicating with the iPod is not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes to install the iPod's software." My G5 iPod (60GB) works on two other computers (both without any music on them), so I assume there something wrong with my computer and not the iPod itself.
    Now for the long-winded story of the last eight hours of my life...
    I just got the Generation-5 iPod Video (60GB) a today and I'm having problems already. I followed the instructions and installed the iPod software and then plugged in my iPod (iTunes has been on my computer for a while now). I was expecting iTunes to open after plugging in the iPod, but my device manager only detected and installed "a new device". I manually opened iTunes and got an error saying: "The software required for communicating with the iPod is not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes to install the iPod's software."
    After re-installing the iPod software and iTunes, and restarting my computer countless times, I came looking for help here. I found this page, which seemed to outline my problem exactly. My computer recognizes the iPod as a drive, but iTunes won't have anything to do with it. I have all the symptoms outlined in the heading, so I hoped to solve my problem there. I followed the instructions step-by-step, and after the final restart, I open iTunes to get the same exact error message.
    I decided to determine whether there was a problem with my iPod or if it was my computer. I plugged my iPod into my uncles's powerbook, and got to the point where I can name and configure my iPod. I expected it to work flawlessly on a Mac (which it did) but there is no way for me to continue using a Mac (after tomorrow) for my iPod. This formatted the iPod for a Mac, so I went to another (different from the original) Windows computer, clean of any iTunes and iPod software, and followed the instructions exactly as they're supposed to be followed. After the installations, I plugged in my iPod, and although iTunes didn't open, I was able to format back to Windows and name my iPod (a step in the right direction). I should note that my (anti-iPod) computer is a Windows XP Pro, and the working one is Windows XP Home Edition. This was all well and good, until I remembered there was no music on this computer. So my iPod is completely working there, but there isn't anything I can do with it.
    Next, I came back here and browsed around the discussion boards, hoping to find somebody with a similar problem to mine. There seems to be alot of errors concerning iTunes not recognizing the iPod, but none of the solutions I tried worked for me, including changing the drive letter. I get the "iPod Service Error" while trying to restore to factory settings through iPod updater.
    Of course, I could transfer all 32GB of music from one computer to another, but the second (working) computer isn't mine and I won't have access to it in a couple months. It would be most convenient if I could get my iPod working on my own computer. Any help would be appreciated, especially from somebody who has solved this problem or know how to solve this problem.
    P.S.
    Here are some other minor details that my be important, but I didn't feel they were worth including.
    - My brother has his iPod mini set up on my computer, under a different user login. He gets the same error once in a while, but re-installing iTunes always solves the problem for him. I had him try solving my problem his way, but nothing worked for him either.
    - My computer is an AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3200+, 512MB RAM with Windows XP Pro SP2 installed. My internal hard drive is partitioned, using the letters C, D and H (C being my system files, D used for recovery files and H for my applications and games). My E drive is used as a DVD/CD-ROM Drive, and drives F and G are reserved for virtual drives (none have been running during this entire ordeal). My external hard drive uses the letter I, and I manually set my iPod to use the letter J (I've never used 'J' for anything else before).
    - Yes, I have downloaded and installed the latest versions of iTunes and the iPod software.
    - I'm assuming there is a problem with my computer and not my iPod, since it worked on both other computers I tried. I'm hoping it's as simple as changing a registry file or cleaning out (yet another) temp directory.

    Solution to "Software required for communicating with the iPod is not installed"!
    I battled this same problem for about 5 hours. Going through re-installations, the "5 R's", all these discussion boards. Nothing worked.
    The problem is that iPodService was repeatedly crashing after minute or so. You can verify this by hitting Ctrl-Alt-Delete and noting that iPodService is missing from the process list (sort by image name), or by right-clicking on My Computer and selecting "Manage", then going to Services and checking out the IPodService service - if it gives you the option to "Start", then it's not running.
    Here is what worked.
    1. De-install iTunes and iPod (if you have the updater installed) completely by going to Start --> Control Panel --> Add/Remove Programs. Also delete the C:\Program Files\iTunes and c:\Progam Files\iPod\bin directories. (Don't worry, this doesn't affect your saved music files.)
    2. Log in as an Administrator
    3. Go into the registry (note this is dangerous - you should be careful) and remove the iPod entries that the uninstaller misses.
    3.1 Go to Start menu --> Run.
    3.2 Type in "regedit".
    3.3 Go to HKEYCLASSESROOT --> IPodService.iPodManager.
    There are two keys here, iPodManager and iPodManager.1. In my case, I did not have permission to view either of these. I think this is the root cause of the problem. I think the installer can't properly update these because it doesn't have permission. So you need to change the permissions:
    3.4 Right-click on IPodService.IPodManager
    3.4.1 Select "Permissions..." A warning will appear saying you don't have permission, but that you can change permissions.
    3.4.2 On the window that launches, click on "Advanced..."
    3.4.3 Click on the "Owner" tab.
    3.4.4 Select a valid account (the one you're logged in under) under "Change Owner To".
    3.4.5 Hit "OK".
    3.4.6 Back on the main Permissions window, hit Add and add the same account as a valid user.
    3.4.6.1 Where it says "Enter the object names to select", type in the account name, e.g. "Smith".
    3.4.7 Click on the "Allow" checkboxes for "Full Control" and "Read".
    3.4.8 Hit "OK".
    3.5 Repeat procedure for the "iPodManager.1" key.
    3.6 Now right-click and delete both of these keys.
    I think that's all that's required, but I also searched through the registry and deleted the following keys.
    4. Other keys I deleted:
    4.1 HKEYCLASSESROOT --> IPodManager.IPodManagerUI.1
    4.2 HKEYLOCALMACHINE --> SOFTWARE --> Apple Computer Inc. --> iPod
    I think that's all I deleted, but I'm not positive. I seached for instances of "ipod" using the Find... and Find Next functions under the Edit menu.
    5. Exit out of the registry editor.
    6. Re-install iTunes. I re-installed iTunes and reconnected the iPod, and everything worked.
    I want to repeat that editing the registry can completely mess up your computer if you modify the wrong things, so only do this if you're comfortable, and be extremely careful.
    Hopefully this helps!
    Apple support people: assuming this works, please add it to your solutions page, and feel free to reimburse me for spending half of Christmas figuring this out.

  • There is a problem communicating with the printer.

    I have a Lexmark Interpret S405. I am using a MBP laptop with WiFi, running 10.5.8. I have a cabled (non-wifi) Linsys router. I am using an Airport Express.
    I was finally able to get the WiFi light on the Lexmark to be static green after reinstalling the Lexmark WiFi setup and reconfiguring my Airport settings so that both the computer and printer see each other.
    In fact, I even updated the driver from Lexmark's Web site last night and I watched the WiFi light on the printer blink green indicating that the installation of the driver update was being communicated to the printer.
    However, when I print, it opens the print window and says first "Looking for S300-S400", then it says "Printer is now online". Then after about 10 seconds, I get this error: "There is a problem communicating with the printer. Make sure the printer is powered on and connected to the computer. Delete or hold the job and try again."
    I've exhausted Lexmark's technical databases and couldn't find the answer here.
    I've read that one possible solution was to delete all the printers from the "Print & Fax" system preferences window and re-add. That didn't work.
    Lexmark says for: The printer communicating on a network; however, the printer is not responsive. Possible causes could be:
    1. Your printer is associated with a network, router, or access point, but it is not your network.
    2. A software process is blocked by a system security firewall preventing network communication.
    3. You are logged into Virtual Private Network (VPN).
    4. You are connected to a network but have decided to switch to a USB connection.
    I don't have a VPN and have removed the USB cable, then restarted both printer and computer, and deleted printers in Sys Prefs, restarted, and still no solution.
    I can print directly via USB cable, but want to print wirelessly.
    Lexmark also says to enter my PIN (which I have pulled out from the print menu screen on the printer) in the System. That tells me a lot...
    Network settings on the print window on the printer also tell me Signal strength is 5 (excellent) and that I am on the network my airport is on.
    Message was edited by: Macman17

    I bet this is too late but...
    Are you trying to print through the airport express wirelessly or the built in wireless of the lexmark? If you want to use the airport express, there is no need to mess with the wireless printing on the lexmark at all. The airport express will be easy to set up, all the wireless setups through the printers are a pain.
