  • Error message: ORA-00821: Specified value of sga_target 4M is too small

    Dear all
My database instance is down, when I am trying to start, it throw any error:
ORA-00821: Specified value of sga_target 4M is too small, needs to be at least 28M
The problems started when erroneous altered sga_target to some values without specifying the unit.
My question is, how can I resolve this issue while the database instance is down? I am using spfile
I tried to start the instance with pfile (startup pfile='D:\oracle\product\10.2.0\admin\orcl\pfile\init.ora') it throw errors:
LRM-00109: could not open parameter file 'D:\oracle\product\10.2.0\admin\orcl\pfile\init.ora'
ORA-01078: failure in processing system parameters
Please any one to help me
    Regards
    Sadock

    Hi,
What you can do in this case and you don't have a good pfile, you can do the following:
    1. locate the spfile, normally in the $ORACLE_HOME/dbs directory
    2. Make a copy from the spfile to be sure will not be damaged.
    3. Do on unix prompt: strings -a <spfile> > newpfile.ora
    4. Check with an editor the newpfile.ora and edit. The pfile will contain all the settings and you should change the SGA_TARGET value to a size of 400M or higher. Smaller values can be done but are not advisable at 10GR2 or higher.
    5. Try to startup the database using the updated newpfile.ora.
Hope this will solve your issue.

  • ORA-06502: PL/SQL :character string buffer too small

    Dear Sir,
Hi, in htmldb I am trying to create package body, but when I select the package name which I already have the specification part for it, and click next I got this error.
what should I do please help thanks

What do you mean "execute the package"?
Your parenthetical suggests that you want to compile the package body in the SQL Commands window. If that is the case, just type all that code in there and click the Run button (everything from "create or replace up to but not necessarily including the slash ('/') after the last "end" statement.
If you mean "execute" then you can run any of the functions or procedures in the package (after it is compiled) in the SQL Commands window using PL/SQL anonymous blocks.

    Valli,
I don't think you understood my post, above:
Can you please create an application that shows the problem on apex.oracle.com? Then we'll be able to see all your code together with the database tables, etc.
If you do not have a workspace you can request one.
Please request a workspace on apex.oracle.com. After your workspace request is approved, create an application there that shows this problem you are having. Create the necessary tables, packages, and other database objects in the database to support the example.
As the last step, post here the workspace name, the application ID, and detailed instructions explaining how to use your application to demonstrate the problem.

I am getting this error when my procedure is being invoked. I've checked if a calculation is attemting to assign an integer to a column that has a smaller data type...e.g 99 being inserted into NUMBER(2)....but this all seems fine...
any ideas where I should check?

    >Is there a way to tell which column is throwing this error
    As suggested by Guido it appears to be related to your variables, not the table;
    SQL> create table t (col1 number(1))
    Table created.
    SQL> begin

  • OLAP -- ORA-6502: numeric or value error: character string buffer too small

    Hi all,
We got installed Oracle 9201. After applying the patch #2761332 (to upgrade up to 9203)
and interim patch #2897078 (9203 Patch 1) we always get OLAP Catalog invalid.
I've tried to mend this problem by doing all it is said in Notes 23268.1 & 226443.1 but
my effort was worthless. OLAP catalog is still invalid though BI_Checkconfig says is okay at all.
Nevertheless, we can create dimensions, cubes and measures well, but other problem arises when
I try to add a dimension to a cube issuing the following command:
    cwm2_olap_cube.add_dimension_to_cube( owner, NAME, owner, DIM_NAME);
ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: character string buffer too small
    ORA-06512: at "OLAPSYS.CWM2_OLAP_MANAGER", line 380

    ORA-06512: at "OLAPSYS.CWM2_OLAP_CUBE", line 281
Paying attention to other metalink/otn threads about this subject we found similar problems with
Oracle 9203 in Japanese (keeping in mind we use Oracle in Spanish).
Any patch we can apply? Any ideas? Your comments are welcome ...

  • ORA-01401: inserted value too large for column from 9i to 8i

    Hi All,
Am trying to get the data from 9.2.0.6.0 to 8.1.7.0.0.
The character sets in both of them are as follows
    9i
    NLS_NCHAR_CHARACTERSET : AL16UTF16
    NLS_CHARACTERSET : AL32UTF8
    8i
    NLS_NCHAR_CHARACTERSET : UTF8
    NLS_CHARACTERSET : UTF8
And the structure of the Table in 9i which am trying to pull is as follows.
    SQL> desc xyz
    Name Null? Type
    PANEL_SITE_ID NOT NULL NUMBER(15)
    PANELIST_ID NUMBER
    CHECKSUM VARCHAR2(150)
    CONTACT_PHONE VARCHAR2(100)
    HH_STATUS NUMBER
    HH_STATUS_DT DATE
    HH_RECRUITMENT_PHONE VARCHAR2(100)
    HH_RECRUITMENT_DT DATE
    FIRST_NET_USAGE_DT DATE
    INSTALL_DT DATE
    FNAME VARCHAR2(4000)
    LNAME VARCHAR2(4000)
    EMAIL_ADDRESS VARCHAR2(200)
    EMAIL_VALID NUMBER
    PASSWORD VARCHAR2(4000)
And by connecting to one of the 8i schema am running the following script
    CREATE TABLE GPMI.GPM_HOUSEHOLDBASE_FRMP AS
    SELECT PANEL_SITE_ID,
    PANELIST_ID,
    LTRIM(RTRIM(CHECKSUM)) CHECKSUM,
    LTRIM(RTRIM(CONTACT_PHONE)) CONTACT_PHONE,

    HH_RECRUITMENT_DT,
    FIRST_NET_USAGE_DT,
    INSTALL_DT, LTRIM(RTRIM(FNAME)) FNAME,
    LTRIM(RTRIM(LNAME)) LNAME,
    LTRIM(RTRIM(EMAIL_ADDRESS)) EMAIL_ADDRESS,
    EMAIL_VALID,
    PASSWORD
    FROM [email protected];
    Am gettinh the following error.
Can anyone of you fix this one.
    PASSWORD
    ERROR at line 14:
ORA-01401: inserted value too large for column
    Thanks in Advance
    Sudarshan

Additionally I found this matrix, which explains your problem:
    UTF8 (1 to 3 bytes) AL32UTF8 (1 to 4 bytes)
    MIN MAX MIN MAX
    CHAR 2000 666 2000 500
    VARCHAR2 4000 1333 4000 1000 */
For column PASSWORD the maximum length is used (4000). UTF8 uses maximal 3 bytes for a character, while AL32UTF8 may use up to 4 characters. So a column defined in AL32UTF8 may contain characters, which do not fit in a corresponding UTF8 character.

  • 'ORA-01401 inserted value too large for column' - 9i

I am migrating a java application from 8i to 9i. The application is writing data to a oracle 8i database without any problem.
When the underlying database source is switched to oracle 9i database(same databaseschema as 8i) by pointing to 9i instance , the application is
encountering the error: 'ORA-01401 inserted value too large for column' when trying to insert a particular field. The fileld is declared as varchar2(400) in the both the database.
The debug output from application also shows that the column data being inserted as 10 characters. The insert statement from SQLPLUS works fine. So it's looks like an issue with the JDBC driver for the 9i server. I am wondering if anyone has observed such strange behavior.
    Thanks
    Vijay

    Vijay,
Are you using OCI driver ? There is a known issue with OCI driver when using setFixedCHAR before an INSERT statement. This problem only happens with a string of length zero. There is no known issue with THIN Driver. This is fixed in Oracle9i Release 2.

  • ORA-0605: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: character string buffer too small

I get this error on two function activities in a workflow of mine. I don't even get into the pl/sql procedure call.
    The exact error is:
    Error Name -6502
Error Message: ORA-0605: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: character string buffer too small
    Error Stack: @#@Wf_Engine_Util.Function_Call(MY_PACKAGE.MY_PROC, ITEM_TYPE, ITEM_KEY, 6519, RUN)
If I retry the step (expedite -> retry) it runs until it hits the second function which does the same thing (there is a function in between the two functions that do not have any issues). I then have to retry that step as well. Any ideas?
This seems similar to the following issue that does not have a resolution posted:
ORA-06502 PL/SQL numeric or value error in wf process
I've tried commenting out the bodies of the procedures called but that does not help (again -- im not getting into the bodies but im not sure what else it could be).
    Any ideas or suggestions?

    Hi,
Does this happen on every instance of the process, or just a few?
Are these activities in the middle, or right at the start of the flow?
Are any other activities being performed correctly first? If so, are these standard or bespoke?
My inclination would be that there is some kind of variable that is being populated (or concatenated onto), which is growing too big. When the process errors, it gets cleared, which is why an expedite would move the activity on.

  • EXEC SQL Error: ORA-01401: Inserted value too large for column

Getting this SQL Error: ORA-01401: Inserted value too large for column..on an EXEC SQL Insert statement when writing to an
    external Oracle DB from SAP.
On further analysis..it appears that this happens to the fields..when the string length matches the field length.
Example:  Plant field is defined as char(4) on the SAP side and it is a Varchar2(4) on the Oracle side.
When a value like '1015' is passed thru a variable in the insert statement then this ORA-01401 error pops up.
    No error:
       - if the value '1015' is passed directly in the insert statement to the external table  (or)
       - when a value with 3 chars or less(like the first three chars..101) is passed thru a variable  defined as 'Plant(4) type c'.
       - when using EXEC sql within SAP
       - when reading from the external db table
This was working ok until the  Oracle Patch P9147110 was installed recently.
    Any suggestions !

    Hello Dvas,
what's the characterset of your external database?
What's the column definition in your external database (byte or character based)?
If you use a characeterset like UTF8 it is possible, that one character needs more than one byte and then you will run into such kind of issues if the definition is too small.

    Stefan

  • Snapshot refresh error:  ora-01401 inserted value too large for column

I have an error ora-01401 "Inserted value too large for column" when I try to do a refresh on a group at the materialized view site.
My model is 1 master replicating to a readonly materialized view site. I have 2 refresh groups for separate sets of tables. 1 refresh group work fine...the other I got the above error.
I have doubled the rbs and system tablespace without any help thinking that I must be running out of default rollback segment space.
    Anyone has this before?

The error is related to a field, not to any tablespace. This normaly happens to me when I change the lenght or resolution of a field in the base tables. The structure changes don't "flow" to the materialized view! I must "regenerate" them. Normally droping and creating it again to make them receive the new lenght of that field.
Sometimes, when the field changed is not part of any primary key I have changes directly the field in the materialized view as if it was a normal table.
    Hope this helps

    Thanks in Advance!

    Hi muthu,
// inserted value too large for column
When your oracle insertion throws this error, it implies that some value that you are trying to insert into the table is larger than the allocated size.
Just check the format of your table and the respective size of each field on your oracle cleint by using the command,
    DESCRIBE <tablename> .
and then verify it with the input. I dont think the problem is with the DATE format because if it is not a valid date format, you would have got on error like
String Literal does not match type
    Hope this helps,
    Regards,
    Bhavesh
