Ora-06502 using the PKG_LOOK_AND_FEEL.Paint_Block on Linux

Hi All.
I have ported an application from development (win - client machine) to the application server on Linux.
An error (ora-06502) is shown where calling the PKG_LOOK_AND_FEEL.Paint_Block.
I have verified all parameters have a value when this procedure is called ... Any ideas of what may be causing this one ...?
Best regards, Luis ....!

  • ORA-06502 in the Tree Report

    I am encountering the following error on my Tree report occasionally. "Unexpected error ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: character string buffer too small". Apex version 3.x (I think not sure), Database 10.1.0.4
    I have noticed that I can keep on expanding nodes a couple of times and then suddenly I get error. After I logoff and logon again, I can get tree displayed and then after few expands I receive the error. I have reduced MAX LEVEL from 5 to 1. Here is the query and the table:
    select "METHOD_ID" id,
    "P_METHOD_ID" pid,
    method_id || ' : ' || P_method_id || ' : ' ||
    PROJECT_NAME || ' : ' ||
    package_name || ' : ' ||
    class_name || ' : ' ||
    method_name name,
    'f?p=&APP_ID.:10:&SESSION.::NO::GLB_METHOD_ID:'||"METHOD_ID" link,
    null a1,
    null a2
    from java2java_usedby h .
    The table java2java is:
    CREATE TABLE JAVA2JAVA_USEDBY
    METHOD_ID NUMBER(15) NOT NULL,
    PROJECT_NAME VARCHAR2(200 BYTE),
    COMPONENT_NAME VARCHAR2(200 BYTE),
    PACKAGE_NAME VARCHAR2(200 BYTE),
    CLASS_NAME VARCHAR2(200 BYTE),
    METHOD_NAME VARCHAR2(200 BYTE),
    P_METHOD_ID NUMBER
    NOLOGGING ;
    CREATE UNIQUE INDEX JAVA2JAVA_USEDBY_U1 ON JAVA2JAVA_USEDBY
    (P_METHOD_ID, METHOD_ID)
    NOLOGGING;
    This table allows a row to have multiple parents. So for a given method_id, there could be more than one p_method_id.
    Method ID values are 10-12 digits

    Vasant - It would be ideal if you could show this problem on apex.oracle.com.
    There was an error with similar symptoms reported and discussed here: Tree error, after Expand All, then collapsing any node, ORA-6502/6512 , so if you could determine the version of Application Express you are using that might be useful.

    Hi,

    Why "a" not fail and "b" if it fails?Because Oracle RDBMS is (too) kind to you for "simple" conversion like that (but that doesn't mean you won't get errors...).
    The to_number function takes as input <b>string</b>.
    You're sending to it a <b>number</b>, so Oracle does this : +"Ok this guy is sending a number into a TO_NUMBER function when it should be a string, let's do an implicit conversion for him transparently"+.
    Your to_number(my_number_variable,'FM9G990D90') actually becomes this :to_number( to_char(my_number_variable) ,'FM9G990D90')But, as you can notice, the to_char function is not given any format, so it uses your session default which could be way different from the mask you're providing to the to_number function.
    Please execute this to understand what your failing to_number function is receiving as input :select 6666.12 number_implicitly_converted from dual;By default, on my machine it displays this :Scott@my11g SQL>select 6666.12 number_implicitly_converted from dual;
    NUMBER_IMPLICITLY_CONVERTED
                        6666.12Now if I use it as input of your to_number function with your format mask :Scott@my11g SQL>select TO_NUMBER('6666.12','FM9G990D90') back_to_number from dual;
    select TO_NUMBER('6666.12','FM9G990D90') back_to_number from dual

    Conclusion : Don't mess up the use of to_number/to_char/to_date functions.

  • How can I use the windows LookAndFeel under linux??

    Some sample code would be great ;-)
    Thanks a million,
    Serano.

    really ? amazing ....
    I dont like this "range agains MS" wave, but it is a ridiculous stuff.. to protect the visual aspect of a system ?!?
    crazy world....
    anyway, you may "simulate" the Windows look and feel, but I think it is much effort just to set a GUI visual aspect...
    two forms of this "simulation":
    1 - search in the SUN jars and get the file containing this L&F definitions, then change some classes name and create a new (fake) class defining the Win L&F
    2 - create a theme class containing colors, borders and all other necessary stuff to simulate the Win L&F.
    of course the second way is much more elegant (and honest :^) ) .. but, you know, when a big company plays a bad game,all other players may adopt the same behaviour :^)))
    take a look in the MetalWorks example about how to create a customized theme (if you still motivated to use something like Windows L&F)
    Im a little bit shocked with this copryght restriction.... it doesnt make sense...

  • Webutil ORA-06502

    Hello,
    When using webutil.file_selection_dialog we are getting an ORA-06502 when the directory structure and filename is 255 char long. Is this a known limitation?
    When enabling webutil logging we get the following output:
    2003-aug-22 13:44:53.640 WUF[getProperty()] Value of WUF_GFN_OPENFILE=S:\Exchange\TestData\Product.development[1]proposal\Project..201.Portal\Case Data\Hull\TestData\Product.development[1]proposal\Project..201.Portal\Case Data\Hull\TestData\Product development proposal\Project Portal\Case Data\Extra[234].long path\short.txt
    sun.plugin.cache.DownloadException

    I tried a simple case and it worked for 279 characters.
    e.g. myString VARCHAR2(400);
    BEGIN
    Webutil_File.File_Selection_Dialog();
    message (myString);
    END;
    works ok.
    My guess is maybe you are assigning it to a field which is not big enough.

  • Ideas for working around ORA-06502: character string buffer too small on Interactive report

    Hello,
    This is for Apex 4.2.  We are trying to create an interactive report.  The report is for something similar to a time tracking application.  We are trying to concat a comments column while summing the hours.  For example,
    select TASK_NAME, sum(HOURS), to_char(XMLAGG(XMLELEMENT(E,E.COMMENTS || ' : ')).EXTRACT('//text()').getstringval()) USER_COMMENTS from ......
    This query works fine if we are looking only at a 1 week window.  The issue we are experiencing is that when we expand the range of the query to include data from 3 months, we hit ORA-06502 in the interactive report.  If we remove this column from the Interactive report, then the report runs fine.
    Does anyone have any ideas on how we might be able to work around this?  I am guessing we are hitting the 32k limit on the report.  Ideally we would just show the last X number of comments and then have a link to view all the comments
    Any help would be appreciated
    Thanks
    Mike

    ListAGG throws an ORA-01489 for varchar2 > 4000 bytes
    OP has an ORA-06502 --> the IR is running into a 4k/32k limit.
    quick solution: wrap USER_COMMENTS ListAGG in a substr( ...., 1, 4000)
    Longer solution, use a subquery to modify the comments based on ROW_NUMBER() (ie after nth row, change it to NULL)
    with
    -- simulating data
    t as (select task_id, sysdate - lv as date_entered
      ,round(dbms_random.value(1,24)) hours
      , '-*' || lv || '.' || task_id || '*-' as user_comments
    from ( select level as task_id from dual connect by level <=10 ), (select level lv from dual connect by level < 1000)
    -- modify data
    modified_data as (
      select task_id, hours, date_entered
        ,case
          when row_number() over (partition by task_id order by date_entered desc) < 5
            then user_comments
          else null
         end USER_COMMENTS
        from t)
    select task_id, sum(hours) total_hours,
      listagg( user_comments  ) within group (order by date_entered desc)

  • Attached library & ora-06502

    Running forms 5.0.6.8.0 and
    Oracle 8.0.5.0.0
    I am using an attached library . Package1 consists only of a package spec that defines a set of variables. Packages 2 thru 5 consist of various functions and procedures some of which reference the variables defined in Package 1.
    My problem is this.
    If I execute package2.functionA in form1 in the pre-form trigger, it executes perfectly. If I execute package2.functionA in form2 in the pre-form trigger it fails and raises the error ORA-06502. The code in both pre-form triggers are identical. I can see no obvious differences between the forms.
    If I rewrite package2 and replace the package1 variable with a local variable defined in package2, the function runs fine in both form1 and form2. I am totally confused.
    Any suggestions.

    i minimised it in the forum to just let u know the gist without going into the gritty details =)
    oh i realised my problem ...heheh its a stp error
    so sorry =)

  • Help Using Instant Client ODBC on Linux

    I am familiar with using ODBC and visual basic under Windows. I would like to use the Oracle instant client ODBC under Red Hat ES3 within a C or C++ program to access an Oracle database.
    Where can I find documentation related to this:
    a) setting up an ODBC connection on Linux
    b) installing the Oracle instant client on Linux
    c) building an application with Oracle instant client ODBC
    Am I correct in assuming that any C/C++ ODBC code examples from windows could also be used on Linux.
    Thanks,
    Werner

    We are also interested in the very same thing. We are using third party compiler called SIMSCRIPT from CACI which has a module called SDBC for database connectivity. SDBC requires ODBC to be installed/configured. Our application is for Linux, therefore we are interested in using the ODBC driver on Linux clients to connect Oracle database servers on Linux and Sparc. I see the odbc related zip (for 10g) and rpm (for 11g) instant client files on the OTN Instant Client download page. How to install/configure odbc instant client? Is there a document/whitepaper/Metalink Note ?
    Thank you

  • ORA-06502 When using MAX(Column) with %TYPE

    Hi Guys,
    Just had this discussion on the main database forums, and the problem was somewhat resolved. But they did ask me to check here if this was a known issue.
    Assuming I have a table defined as follows
    CREATE TABLE TEST_TABLE (TEST_COLUMN CHAR(8 BYTE)) ;and the table only has a single record NZ07100S
    We also define a function as
    CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION
    FUNCTION GETTESTVALUE
    RETURN TEST_TABLE.TEST_COLUMN%TYPE
    IS
    TEST_VALUE TEST_TABLE.TEST_COLUMN%TYPE;
    BEGIN
    SELECT MAX(TEST_COLUMN) INTO TEST_VALUE FROM TEST_TABLE;
    RETURN TEST_VALUE;
    END;We ran the following command
    SELECT GETTESTVALUE FROM DUAL;and receive an error as follows
    Error report:
    SQL Error: ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: character string buffer too small
    ORA-06512: at "GETTESTVALUE", line 6
    06502. 00000 - "PL/SQL: numeric or value error%s"However, if were to modify the function to the following
    CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION
    FUNCTION GETTESTVALUE
    RETURN TEST_TABLE.TEST_COLUMN%TYPE
    IS
    TEST_VALUE TEST_TABLE.TEST_COLUMN%TYPE;
    BEGIN
    SELECT TEST_COLUMN INTO TEST_VALUE FROM TEST_TABLE;
    RETURN TEST_VALUE;
    END;There is no error reported and the value NZ07100S is returned.
    Of course, when we modified the function to be
    CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION
    FUNCTION GETTESTVALUE
    RETURN TEST_TABLE.TEST_COLUMN%TYPE
    IS
    TEST_VALUE TEST_TABLE.TEST_COLUMN%TYPE;
    BEGIN
    SELECT CAST(MAX(TEST_COLUMN) AS CHAR(8))INTO TEST_VALUE FROM TEST_TABLE;
    RETURN TEST_VALUE;
    END;No errors are reported, and the value is returned
    Some of the guys in the main forums tried this out on Enterprise edition and did not encounter any issues. To faciliate their testing, I spooled the sqlsplus output and it is as follows

    However, I was just wondering, does anyone know if this is a known issue with Oracle XE ??

    Pratap.,
    Error in classical report download by print server link.This is a PDF output that your are generating?
    Which Report Server have you configured? This error is coming from Report Server.
    The Standard Report Server has its limitations. If are using Std then maybe you have hit one of them.

  • ORA-00601 Error using JDBC, Oracle 8i on Linux

    Hello,
    Spatial is considering using Oracle as its database platform. I was assigned
    the task of benchmarking the two platforms. So, I downloaded the latest copy
    of Oracle for Linux, version 8.1.6.1.0 ( 8i Enterprise Edition Release 2 ).
    I'm using RedHat 6.2, with a 2.2.14-5.0smp kernel. I ran the installer, set
    up the databases, and everything seemed to be running quite nicely. I copied
    a table and its data from mysql to Oracle, and wrote a java program to
    benchmark the two. This java program takes command line arguments, the first
    one being the connection URL, the second being the number of threads to
    start, the third being the number of operations to complete for each thread.
    So, if you pass it connection 35 35, it will open 35 threads, and each
    thread will then execute 35 selects, inserts, and updates. These are
    hard-coded queries, but they mimic the functionality currently in
    production.
    Oracle bombs on the update. I turned tracing on, and tried it again, with
    the same result. Here's an excerpt from one of the trace files:
    *** SESSION ID:(4.1) 2000-06-21 16:36:48.937
    kvotenlg: epc_collect failed. EPC error: -1073751468.

    FDF: /u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.6/otrace/admin/fdf/oracled.fdf
    kvotenlg: epc_collect failed. ctx:368.
    I was not able to find any information regarding this error. However, this
    message ( or one very similar ) appeared in every trace file. I get the
    following at the end of the pmon_xxxx.trc file:
    Load Indicator not supported by OS !
    *** 2000-06-21 17:42:19.122
    error 601 detected in background process
    And, the following in the alert_sid.log file:
    Wed Jun 21 17:42:19 2000
    PMON: terminating instance due to error 601
    Instance terminated by PMON, pid = 3797
    I made the assumption that this error was actually ORA-00601, and took a
    peek on the internet for relavent information. The canned error message is
    "PMON process runs into lock conflict trying to recovery processes". I found
    someone who had a similar problem, who suggested setting mts_max_dispatchers
    in the initsid.ora file to 1. However, this did not work.
    Basically, when Oracle crashes, the java program is trying to update one
    column in 1225 rows, 35 times, for 35 threads. The java exception is below.

    misconfiguration on my part? Help! :)

    Sorry for the long delay in reply. I was using the thin client driver. However, when I switched to the oci8 driver, not only did I observe a 300% increase in speed, but this bizarre occurrence disappeared. I did find one issue with the oci8 driver, as follows.
    In this thread program, if I created a connection in the main program before any of the threads were instantiated, and when the first thread attempted to create a connection, it would produce a segmentation fault. This behavior was very easy to replicate, and it did not matter whether or not I close the original connection. This problem was circumvented by moving the code in the "main" program to create its connection after the child threads had created theirs.

    -6502 ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: character string buffer too small
    What can I do about it???
    Thanks in advance.
    Menno Hoogsteen

    Working on the same project as Menno, I had the time to look into the problem.
    The problem is caused by the creation of the capi-function agregate_char_value in the packages hsu_capf. While creating this function the following code is executed:
    add(' -- allowable values:');
    add(' -- '||l_col_name_list);
    This last statement causes the problem because this table is very big. L_col_name_list contains 2391 characters wich is 393 characters to long. So i changed this code into:
    add(' -- allowable values:');
    add(' -- '||substr(l_col_name_list,1,1990));
    add(' -- '||substr(l_col_name_list,1990));
    and everything works fine. Perhaps something for a patch?
    Kind regards,
    Ruben Spekle
