ORA-12154 TNS resolve error with ProC

<p>Hi all,
<br>
<p>
I have a program written in ProC which works fine when it connects to a local database. However, it is unable to connect to a remote database. The code for making the connection is:
<p>
<i>
EXEC SQL BEGIN DECLARE SECTION;<br>
char name[20];<br>
char pwd[20];<br>
char dbname[20];<br>
char dbstring[20];<br>
EXEC SQL END DECLARE SECTION;<br>
strcpy(name, "admin");<br>
strcpy(pwd, "adminadmin");<br>
strcpy(dbname, "userdb");<br>
strcpy(dbstring, "userdb");<br>
EXEC SQL WHENEVER SQLERROR DO printf( "Connection Error = %s", sqlca.sqlerrm.sqlerrmc);<br>
EXEC SQL CONNECT :name IDENTIFIED BY :pwd AT :dbname USING :dbstring;<br>
</i>
<p>
The content of fthe file tnsnames.ora:<br>
<i>
userdb =<br>
(DESCRIPTION =<br>
(ADDRESS_LIST =<br>
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = 192.168.30.21)(PORT = 1521))<br>
)<br>
(CONNECT_DATA =<br>
(SID = userdb)<br>
)<br>
)<br>
</i>
<p>
I can "tnsping userdb" and "telnet 192.168.30.21 1521" but the program keeps generating the ORA-12154 connection error.
The version of my oracle client is 9.2.0.1.0
The version of the db server is 8.1.7
Could any one give me some advice please. I had been searching for the solutions for days but failed. Please help. Thanks.

<p>
i do a file search "find / -name tnsnames.ora", here is the result:
<p>
/home/oracle/dbscript/database/tnsnames.ora<br>

  • ORA-12154 Oracle Client Error with VirtualBox

    This is rather lengthy and I am not sure this is the right forum for this question but it does involve the Oracle Client.
    My development environment consists of a single workstation that is not connected to a network. The OS for the database is Linux CentOS (Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 or 4). The database seems to run fine from the Linux OS - OEM and SQLPlus run as well as all the other utilities (lsnrctl, etc.).
    The database front-end has to be Access 2003. This is requiring that I run Windows from VirtualBox so I can do the FE database development.
    In addition to this when I try to create a system (or any other) DSN, I get the following behaviors.
    - Start up the "Microsoft ODBC Administrator"
    - Select the "System DSN" tab
    - Click "Add..."
    - Select driver: "Oracle in OraClieht11g_home1"
    - Enter the following data in the following fields
    Data Source Name: "orcl_hr"
    TNS Service Name: "orcl"
    - Click the "Test Connection" button
    This initiates a wait of about 1 minute
    - In the "Oracle ODBC Driver Connect" dialog, enter the following data in the fields
    Service Name: "orcl"
    User Name: "hr"
    Password: <the hr password>
    This initiates another wait of about 1 minute after which I get an error dialog with the following message:
    Unable to connect
    SQLState=08004
    [oracle][ODBC][Ora]ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified
    On the Windows side the ORACLE_SID is defined as "orcl"
    On the Linux (db server) side, the following files have the listed contents:
    Listener.ora
    LISTENER =
      (DESCRIPTION_LIST =
        (DESCRIPTION =
          (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = EXTPROC1521))
          (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = local.net)(PROT = 1521))
      )sqlnet.ora
    NAMES.DIRECTORY_PATH= (TNSNAMES, EZCONNECT)tnsnames.ora
    ORCL =
      (DESCRIPTION =
        (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = local.net)(PORT = 1521))
        (CONNECT_DATA =
          (SERVER = DEDICATED)
          (SERVICE_NAME = orcl)
      )Another data point: I notice that the client software has a SqlPlus application. When I try to log on to the database through this app I get the error: ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error.
    Is there a VirtualBox problem? Can it be fixed?
    Edited by: DBelt on Jun 29, 2009 10:19 AM

    The OracleClient install does not create either of the sqlnet.ora or tnsnames.ora files. These are created in the ORACLE_HOME/network/admin direcory of the host machine, however -- as well as the listener.ora file.
    One question I have before we procede much further is what is the "Instant Client" anyway? As I said earlier, I am not even sure this is the proper forum for my question since it involves the OracleClient software -- I know what the OracleClient is but not the "Instant Client".
    That said, I am able to telnet port 1521 from the host if I uset the literal IP address only (using <local.net> does not work). I am completely unable to ping the host at all from VirtualBox (I am operating in NAT mode and this seems to be a documented "feature" of VBox).
    The "sqlplus user/pwd@(DESCRIPTION=...)" comment does not work. I have tried several iterations: 1) as provided above with the double-quotes resulting in a display of the proper syntax for invoking sqlplus, 2) without the quotes, and 3) replacing the double-quotes with parentheses. The outcome of experiments 2) and 3) is a syntax error occurring at "(" for the former or at user/pwd for the latter. (I am substituting proper values for the user, pwd, and local.net placeholders.)
    I am starting to wonder if my problem may lie in trying to run the client from VirtualBox in NAT mode.
    Another question has to do with the ODBC Administrator -- Where does it get its list of "TNS Service Names"?

  • ORA-12154 TNS could not resolve service name error

    Hi
    I'm having trouble connecting to database throug sql*plus.I'm able to connect through TOAD but getting 'ORA-12154 TNS could not resolve service name error' when trying to login through sql*plus using same credentials .
    I tried running sqlplus through command prompt,but when i enter the user-name i'm getting ORA-12203:TNS:unable to connect to destination.
    Can someone help me with this error.
    Thanks.

    It would probably give you an idea where to start looking. You need to make sure that you have the correct .ora files needed for establishing connections. I don't know if your service desk just does the installation but no setup or if they also do the setup configuration. You can also try doing the setup on your own to check. You can use net easy config.

  • Discoverer Plus Error: ORA-12154:TNS:could not resolve the

    Hi,
    I’m running the Discoverer report in Discoverer Plus and getting the below error, but when the same report ran in Desktop completes successfully and the SQL from the report is running without error in SQL nav.
    Database Error - ORA-12154:TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified.
    Thanks in Advance.
    Sunil

    Hi Sunil,
    Did you test the direct method I posted above? That will bypass the tnsnames.ora file. If it connects fine that way, then you likely have a configuration issue with your sqlnet.ora and/or tnsnames.ora
    You can test with:
    $ORACLE_HOME/bin/tnsping <tnsalias>
    If it is successful, then check if you have the TNS_ADMIN environment variable set (echo $TNS_ADMIN) -- assuming Linix/Unix, if Windows, check system environment variables
    You may TNS_ADMIN set and pointing to a tnsnames.ora that is not in the default location.
    If it fails and your tns entry is correct in the tnsnames.ora file, then you may need to look at the sqlnet.ora
    For example,
    If you have NAMES.DEFAULT_DOMAIN set.. then you would need enter: <tnsalias>.<domain> (i.e. scott.world)
    or you may need to check if TNSNAMES is first in NAMES.DIRECTORY_PATH=
    You can remove or rename the sqlnet.ora to make sure that is not an issue.
    Hope that helps. Good Luck.
    ~Steve.

  • ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified Error in Integration Service Catalogs

    Hi guys,
    I tried to execute a package with Oracle Data Source from Integration Services Catalogs and I got the following error.
    ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified
    The package runs fine from the SSIS project but once I deploy to SSIS Catalog it fails to run. I need help!
    Thanks
    me

    Hello ,
    The ORA-12154 is a very common error, always related to your local copy of the tnsnames.ora file, your listener configuration and your database name aliases.
    Make sure that your listener is listening for the same service name that you are using.
    Your service name might have an alias, so check for global (world) entries and local entries.  Check:
    $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin/tnsnames.ora
    Check your global_name setting with this SQL:
    select * from global_name;

    When using a dblink, the database with the link is acting as a client to the remote database ... exactly like sqlplus running on the db server.

  • ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified [10g XE]

    Greetings
    There are many topics on this issue over the internet but None of them addresses this issue properly, so I couldn't find a solution to the problem.
    I installed: Oracle Database 10g Express Edition
    After the installation was done, I opened SQL Command Line
    and I used the command "connect" to login
    I enter the username
    Then I entered the password
    After a couple of seconds I got the following ERROR message:
    ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified
    Screenshot of the error:
    http://i35.tinypic.com/14o26g7.png
    I installed this version of Oracle on both Windows XP 32 bit and Windows 7 32 bit and I get the same error message when it tries to connect.
    Why doesn't Oracle work right after the installation?
    Are there any further steps that need to be done in order to make this work? If so I would really appreciate any step by step help, I've been stuck trying to find a solution for days.

    Get into SQL*Plus with the command I gave you, now type this:
    alter user <theusernameyouwant> identified by abc123;followed by (still in SQL*Plus):
    connectafter you type "connect", SQL*Plus will ask you for a user name and password. Use the same user name and password you used in the alter command.

  • MSDAORA,IIS,ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve service name

    Hi All,
    I have a Web Service that coded in VS2008, using ORACLE DB(9i).
    At a time the application working fine and I can access and do everything with database.
    Some other time database server is down for scheduled maintenance. If I try to run the application at this point of time it will raise err "ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve service name".
    When i reset iis it start to work fine for a while.Then same problem occurs again.
    My connection string is connectionString="provider=MSDAORA.1;data source=***;user id=***;password=***;"
    is there any solution?
    i tried that;
    If theire is multiple copies of OCIW32.dll you have to make sure that there is only one copy of OCIW32.dll which should be in /Bin folder of the oracle home folder.
    Add the IUSR_machine name account and the IWAM_machine name account to the Oracle home folder. Give both accounts full control.
    Create empty file tnsnames.ora in same directory as aspnet_wp.exe,

    Hi,
    The issue doesnt make much sense on the surface at least. 12154 means the client couldnt figure out what you were referring to with your Data Source= entry. If the database was taken down, I'd expect an "oracle not available" or some other sort of error, as the client should have still be able to resolve the entry at least, even if the database wasnt up at the time.
    What do you mean by "When i reset iis it start to work fine for a while.Then same problem occurs again."? The same problem meaning you get 12154 when you take the database down? Or you get 12154 without a db restart?
    Are you using TNSNames.ora for client naming resolution, or something else (ldap, for example)?
    Greg

  • ORA-12154: TNS:Could not resolve service name. (WIS 10901).

    HI Gurus, we have the following scenario...
    Weu2019ve installed Busines Objects EDGE 3.1 SP3.
    The server of this installation is MS Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition SP2, Intel ® Xeon Enterprise TM CPU 2.80 GHz 6.5 RAM.
    In the Server we have SAP R/3 Installed over a DB Oracle 9i Enterprise Edition Release 9.2.8.0.
    We installed all BO bundle with successful and we can use the Designer Tool for create universe. In the creation of the universe, we created a connection to the database of the SAP R/3 System and the test runs well, we save and export the universe to CMS. Then, we used that universe in the WebI tool of the suite installed in the server, and it runs well (we call the universe, selected fields of the table, and after run the query, it gives us registers of the DB).
    After all this, we open the InfoView and used the WebI and execute the same universe and the same steps. And when we execute the query the following error occurs .
    A database error occured. The database error text is: ORA-12154: TNS:Could not resolve service name. (WIS 10901)
    The connection to DB is through Designer and we use ODBC Oracle to create the Universe with the Client type and we used super user system, validated previously OK.
    Any suggestion for this error?.
    Thanks.
    Betto.

    Make sure there are no syntax errors in the TNSNAMES.ORA file, look for unmatched parentheses. Also check the SQLNET.ORA file.
    Is the environment is clustered, if so then make sure you have the ODBC connection in all the servers.

    ERROR DBUtil - ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve service name.
    The checked the oracle listener status. It was UP.
    Can anyone help me in this issue.
    Thanks,
    Rag

    Hello,
    Make sure that the service which you have specified in jdbc for making connection with oracle, exists in TNSNAMES.ORA file. You will find this file at different locations in 8i and above. So, better search for it. And add you service name in it. Example services is given in this file itself. So, take help from them.

  • ORA-12154: TNS Error

    Hi all,
    I have a strange problem (for me) while getting connected to Oracle.
    I can get connected to Oracle through SqlPlus window using
    USER/PWD@HOST
    But when i try to get connected through command prompt for importing
    with the same connection details, I am getting the following
    error message...
    IMP-00058: ORACLE error 12154 encountered
    ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified
    IMP-00000: Import terminated unsuccessfully
    Please help me to solve this issue.
    thanks.

    check your environment variable
    echo $ORACLE_SID is properly set or not....if it is correct then check your tnanames.ora entry wherer that entry is having your database details with the connect string you using to startup....
    better to give more details as mohammad said...
    Regards,
    Karthik

  • Error ORA-12154 trying to connect with instant client 11g / LDAP on Ubuntu

    Hello,
    I have successfully installed instant client 11.2.0.2 and sqlplus on my Ubuntu 11.04 workstation. I am able to successfully connect to DB's defined in tnsnames.ora, but when the resolution is (or should be) by LDAP, I get error
    ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified
    Note: while it's fine for testing, it's not a viable option to setup all the DB's defined in the OID in tnsnames.ora - I need to use LDAP.
    My setup is as follows:
    Install folder: /opt/oracle/instantclient_11_2
    TNS_ADMIN=/opt/oracle/instantclient_11_2/
    sqlnet.ora
    NAMES.DIRECTORY_PATH=(TNSNAMES,LDAP)
    I am certain that tnsnames.ora and ldap.ora are valid, as I can connect successfully on another machine with the full client installed using the same files.
    I tried to setup tracing in sqlnet.ora as follows
    TRACE_LEVEL_CLIENT = SUPPORT
    TRACE_DIRECTORY_CLIENT = /tmp
    TRACE_FILE_CLIENT = sqlnet.trc
    but not trace file gets generated in /tmp - am I doing something wrong ? (Note, I also tried to set DIAG_ADR_ENABLED=OFF as suggested by Laurenz Albe in Instant client don't work trace but that did not help)
    I checked DocID=359206.1 but I don't think that applies as I'm on 11g.
    Hope someone can help. Thanks in advance !

    rgoold, you are a star ! I should have thought about line endings of course. Many thanks for your suggestion, that fixed the problem.
