Oracle 11g Linguistic NLS SORT Throws Exception

Hi All,
I am using oracle 11g and when i try NLS_Sort with Generic_m option, throws ORA-00910 exception. See below for more details

1 Oracle Database 11g Release 11.1.0.6.0 - Production

I have one table 'Test' in that column TestDesc varchar2(4000). Now if i retrieve the records by
select sts, it is successfully executed. The same if i do after exec of the below sts, it is
throwing ORA-00910:specified length too long for its datatype.
1. ALTER SESSION SET NLS_SORT=GENERIC_m;
2. Select * From Test order by TestDesc; (It is throwing ORA-00910 exception)
But the same query/setup is executed successfully in oracle 10g.
My question:
Why it is throwing this exception especially in 11g?
Do i need to excute any alter sts like changing of charactor set..
Kindly help me to sove this issue.

Does that mean that 11.2.0.1 (without pse), NLSSORT does not work as intended (documented)?
Correct. At least, if the related information in bug reports is correct.
Is there in 11.2.0.2 still silent truncation instead of "... calculates the collation key for a maximum prefix", if there's a difference?
There is no difference. The term "silent truncation" is not really precise, so the documentation describes the process in a more elaborate way.
Shouldn't docs mention that a "calculated result" could mean that sorts may sometimes be out of sequence (in-exact collation)?
Yes, it should. It is sometimes too easy to assume that things obvious to oneself are also obvious to anybody else ;-) I have asked for the following explanation to be added after the relevant doc paragraph:
"The above behavior implies that two character values whose collation keys (NLSSORT results) are compared to find the linguistic ordering are considered equal if they do not differ in the prefix described above even though they may differ at some further character position. As the NLSSORT function is used implicitly to find linguistic ordering for comparison conditions, BETWEEN condition, IN condition, ORDER BY, GROUP BY, and COUNT(DISTINCT), those operations may return results that are only approximate for long character values. This is a restriction of the current comparison architecture. Currently, the only way to guarantee precise linguistic comparison results is to not compare character values that are longer than 499 characters for monolingual collations and 124 characters for multilingual collations."

Lowered the pessimistic length for multilingual sorts from 249=floor((2000-3)/8) to 124=floor((2000-3)/16)

    HI,
         Iam using AdvancedDatagrid inorder to group the flat data populated from the backend through BlazeDS. Result data will be in xml format and i have converted it to xmllistcollection and assigned to the grouping collection source. Flat data is grouped by one of the attribute called 'Name' and refreshed after data has been populated.
    Data structre used as input is: WIth this structure, iam grouping by the field 'Name'.

    Grouping is done as expected. We have additional functionalities like soring / seraching of the result set. Either one is working fine. Other functionality throws excpetion mentioned below.
    When any of the advanced datagrid grid column header is clicked for sorting, it throws exception. I have pasted the exception below for reference.
    TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.

  • Oracle 11g - Memory used for sorting

    Hi everyone,
    I would like to know how I could analyze memory used for sorting in Oracle 11g. When I run the below query, it returns 1531381.
    select value from v$sysstat where name like 'sorts (memory)';But when I check sort_area_size parameter from v$parameter, it returns 65536. Does it mean my database is using more memory for sorting than sort_area_size. Or is the way I interpret v$sysstat view and sort_area_size wrong? What is the best way to monitor the memory usage for sorting? Thanks in advance.

    check the valuse of pga_aggregate_target
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14237/initparams157.htm
    Note:
    Oracle does not recommend using the SORT_AREA_SIZE parameter unless the instance is configured with the shared server option. Oracle recommends that you enable automatic sizing of SQL working areas by setting PGA_AGGREGATE_TARGET instead. SORT_AREA_SIZE is retained for backward compatibility.
    What is the best way to monitor the memory usage for sorting? try v$sort_usage
    or v$tempseg_usage

    col size for a22
    col SID_SERIAL for a22

  • Oracle 10G gives in sorted order without order by ,in 11g it is not.

    we are facing a strange problem.
    we have M Views on which we perform select operation ,we put joins of M Views and get the results by select operation , the results was in sorted order (asc) and we were not using any order by clause in the select query , this was in oracle 10G.
    The compelte schema where these M views are and also the underneath tables are now migrated to oracle 11g using import/export option.
    Now the queries which was giving the result set in sorted order (asc), are not given the result set in sorted order anymore. it is in different order but I think at always return the same order not asc or desc but an specific random order .
    we can not change the query as of now as there are 1000+ and each query would require a order by statement .
    Do we have any parameters which can be change , so that we can force oracle to use a different plan so that it gives result in order ?
    the select queries are very simple ones not complicated no extra function or group by is used in most of the queries.
    Please suggest possible solutions . Thanks much.

    MOS Doc 345048.1 ('Group By' Does Not Guarantee a Sort Without Order By Clause In 10g and Above)
    Go to http://support.oracle.com, log in to My Oracle Support, and search for 345048.1 If you don't have a My Oracle Support account, you'll need to contact whoever manages your company's Oracle support and ask them to create an account for you.
    Basically, no version of Oracle has ever guaranteed the order of results if you don't specify an ORDER BY clause. In 10g, the only algorithm that was available to implement a GROUP BY happened to sort the results as a side effect. 11g introduced a new algorithm for grouping results that is more efficient and does not have the side effect of ordering the results. Most likely, your query plans have changed to use the more efficient grouping algorithm.
    If you want the results to be sorted, you should add an appropriate ORDER BY clause. If you go through the MOS document, there will also be suggestions for ways that you can disable the new grouping algorithm though I would not recommend that.

  • Sort Order problem in Oracle 11g

    Hi,
    While executing the below query in 10g and 11g, I got different results.

    ADet.Acc_Id,
    loan.Loan_Id

    (select max(Loan_Id) from LoanAcc where Ins_Id =Ins.Ins_Id
    ) AND ADet.Acc_Id = '312'

    Result in Oracle 11g

    691      1      312    234

    The order in both the cases were different.The order in 11g was not in ascending order.Though the data in both the databases
    is same. Could anyone please tell me why is this happening?. Is there any diffeence in the architecure of ORDER BY (sort) in
    10g and 11g. If I modify the above query by avoiding the subquery I get the correct result(i.e in ascending order).

    Very poor implementation.
    a) Absolutely no need for that exception handler in there. It should be removed.
    b) As it's a procedure for logging exceptions relating to UTL_FILE, it would seem error prone to be logging the errors with UTL_FILE. For example, what is it supposed to do if the exception is raised because of lack of disk space in those file locations? How is it going to write out the exception with the disk full? Also, if the exception handler is used by multiple processes, then only 1 process at a time can access the log file to write it's exceptions, so it doesn't scale well. Better logging is done by having an autonomous transaction procedure that writes log/trace messages to dedicated table(s). That also means that the logs etc. can be viewed, as appropriate, from any client using SQL (either manually or through a application written to view logs etc.), rather than requiring physical/remote access to the server o/s to go and view the contents of the file, which in itself could lock the file and prevent any process from writing further logs whilst it's being used.

  • BUG for sort column with Oracle 11g and APEX 3.2

    I have BUG in Report region(Oracle 11g and APEX 3.2). if i have more than 746 Char for my column's value and i want to sort them, this error appear
    Report error :
    ORA-00910: specified length too long for its datatype.
    But in an other environement in Oracle 10g and apex 3.2, with the same data. I have no BUG.
    Somebody have an idea for a possible solution to this problem???

    Again, I may just be wasting your time...but if I have XDB problems...especially with the password, I do the following:
    1. Change your working directory to $ORACLE_HOME/apex.
    2. Start SQL*Plus and connect to the database where Oracle Application Express is installed as SYS.
    3. Run apxconf.sql
    > @apxconf
    4. When prompted, enter a password for the Oracle Application Express Admin account.
    5. When prompted, enter the port for the Oracle XML DB HTTP server. (default port being, of course,8080).
    6. Unlock the ANONYMOUS account
    > ALTER USER ANONYMOUS ACCOUNT UNLOCK;
    7. If needed, I do the SETHTTPPORT command mentioned before...
    Since I'm using the Oracle 11g, with embedded PL/SQL server, I have no idea if this is the same for 10g us OHS?
    Hope that helps!

  • Moving to Tomcat 6, Oracle 11g - getting weird exception

    Hello,
    I am having a problem that I can't seem to get past:

    The code, below, worked against Oracle 10g and Tomcat 5.5:
                   try {
                   DriverManager.registerDriver(new oracle.jdbc.OracleDriver());
                   _driverLoaded = true;
              } catch (Exception e) {
              deflog.error(e);
                   _conn = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:oracle:oci:@orcl", login, pwd);
    I have included ojdbc6.jar in Tomcat's "lib" directory. Am I just missing something dumb?
    Thanks,
    Jerry

    Right it's blowing up on what looks like trying to get metadata about the library.
    It's just loading the dll that came with 11g. I would think that if it were the wrong dll, that this would be a well known issue, right?
    If I remove the library altogether, it complains about simply not being able to find the dll (obviously). If I use a jar ojdbc6.jar targeted at 10g, it complains about 10's dll not being there, which also makes sense.
    My jvm is the latest (installed a couple of days ago).
    A Google search of this particular failure yields pretty much 0 useful results, so I'm hoping someone can shed light on the problem, in general, and what one might do, in general, to fix it....perhaps a Java master employed by Oracle? :)
    Ah well, I'm about to abandon this approach, I don't have time to monkey around with expensive databases that are clunky to upgrade (read almost completely different between versions) and have poor oob tool support. Oracle has cost our company more money than it's made us, that's for sure.

  • Call java 1.6 class from oracle 11g

    Hi Friends
    Can we execute a JAVA 1.6 compatible code under Oracle 11g JVM?
    1.5 compatible code is running fine under Oracle 11g. But code compiled using 1.6 throws following exception:
    ORA-29552: verification warning: java.lang.UnsupportedClassVersionError: (Unsupported major.minor version 50.0)
    Is there any workaround or an upgrade process to run JDK 6 compiled code?
    Thanks
    Mayank

    Hi,
    The Orcale JDBC Drivers download page http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/tech/java/sqlj_jdbc/htdocs/jdbc_111060.html also mentions the jar files needed for the classes.
    Do you have the following file:
    ojdbc6.jar (1,988,051 bytes) - Classes for use with JDK 1.6. It contains the JDBC driver classes except classes for NLS support in Oracle Object and Collection types.
    Regards,

  • Error while creating a JDBC connection to Oracle 11g using WLS 6.1

    Hi
    I am trying to connect to Oracle 11g database on Weblogic 6.1 server.
    First of all i would like to know if this is compatible?
    The environement that i have is this
    1. JDK 1.3
    2. Database 11g is on remote system
    3. Oracle client on my local system ( Connecting to the 11g DB through the client works fine)
    4. Weblogic server 6.1
    5. Currently the application is connected to Oracle 10g DB and working fine(We are attempting to move it to 11g)
    Below are the steps that i followed to create the connection:
    1. Made an entry for the datasource in config.xml under <WLS_DOMAIN>/config folder as below
    <JDBCConnectionPool DriverName="oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver"
    MaxCapacity="4" Name="CADConnectionPool"
    Properties="user=abc_proxy;password=proxy_abc;dll=ocijdbc8;protocol=thin"
    RefreshMinutes="5" ShrinkPeriodMinutes="10" Targets="CAsvr"
    TestConnectionsOnRelease="true" TestConnectionsOnReserve="true"
    TestTableName="dual" URL="jdbc:oracle:thin:@gen11t-ora.db.lab.xyz.com:1530:GEN11T"/>
    2. Restarted the server.
    3. Ran the application and get the following error on the server console:
    <Aug 22, 2011 12:39:42 AM CDT> <Error> <JDBC> <Cannot startup connection pool "C

    The driver being used by your weblogic is too old and incompatible with the DBMS. Upgrade the driver.

    I copied all the installation tree to /tmp/oracle and ran chmod -R 777 * to make sure I could see all the files.
    I've been logging onto the server as the oracle user.
    I've also got Java v1.5.0.6 installed
    I've run out of ideas - anyone able to assist ?

    I've sorted it. Was originally copy unzipped install files from DVD into /tmp but think there must have been some corruption. I now copied and unzipped the install file onto the RH machine and it's now working.

  • Problem with Oracle 11g(32 bit) installation on windows 7 ultimate edition

    Everything went normal during installation, but i can see the services is not present in services.msc. Also its throwing some exception for dbca, netca
    Now i tried to deinstall it and again go for 11g. But even the same story here..

    ur problem is that u install latest version and now u trying to installing old version.
    now u need to uninstall 10g and delete oracle from services, if the probleme presist then u should
    install fresh windows 7.
    Regards
    SaqibNo need to install a fresh OS. That's like tearing your house down just because you wired a lamp wrong and blew a circuit breaker.
    There are MeaLink notes on how to eradicate an Oracle install from Windows, but it boils down to this:
    Stop all Oracle services
    In the registery:
    - Delete all oracle services from the register (HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet
    - Delete the entire Oralce folder from HKLM\Software
    reboot
    Delete the ORACLE_HOME directory and any other Oracle related directories/files. Offhand, it seems like there is an Oracle directory under Program Files.
    reboot

  • Porting from Oracle 10g AS to Oracle 11g Weblogic server

    Hi,
    I am trying to port J2EE applicatin from Oracle 10g AS to Oracle 11g Weblogic Server. I have jsp files which contains sql code embedded to fetch data from the DB. The components used in this application are Java, JSP, Servlets and Stateless session beans.
    I have a commonjar which is used to create DB Connection manager and other common stuff which is present inside web-inf/lib. My application is packaged as an ear and which contains the war and different ejb-project.jar files. When the Stateless bean is trying to call the ConnectionManager class, which is present inside the commonjar inside web-inf/lib, I get InvocationTargetException. When I debugged in Eclipse, I see that that inside ejb the reference ConnectionManager, the variable cannot be resolved. So I guess at runtime, ejb is not able to locate ConnectionManager Class.
    I tried to copy this jar to APP-INF/lib and the same jar is present inside web-inf/lib as well. In that case what happens is the jsp fails with the exception ConnectionManager cannot be resolved.
    How can I make the ejb work by keeping the commonjar inside web-inf/lib alone.
    Any help or suggestions?
    Thanks
    Raj

    The classloader hierarchy in WLS looks like this (arrows denote inheritance direction):
    Java bootstrap classloader <- Java CLASSPATH classloader <- WLS $DOMAIN_HOME/lib classloader <- Application (e.g., EAR) classloader <- web app classloader <- single JSP classloader
    The Connection Manager is loaded by the web app classloader while the EJBs are loaded by the application classloader so the EJBs have no visibility to the classes loaded by the child (web app) classloader.
    The simplest fix might be to move the Connection Manager jar file to the EAR file's APP-INF/lib directory.
    One word of caution though, you need to be using WebLogic Server's Data Sources and JDBC connection pooling to make sure that you correct transactional behavior if the application is doing any sort of JTA transaction (regardless of whether the JTA transactions are using XA or not...).
    Hope this helps,
    Robert
