Oracle 9i SQL Documentation

Can anyone recommend a good book describing/teaching SQL or PL/SQL programming? Assume a new programmer.

what about Oracle's own and free books :) http://www.oracle.com/pls/db92/db92.docindex?remark=homepage
also you may check out OTN'S suggestions listed here - http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/pl_sql/index.html

    I'm not sure what you mean by the URL to the documentation. Oracle doesn't have documentation that's specifically about the test, but they do have a few SQL books/documentation here:

  • [Oracle][ODBC SQL Server Driver][libssclient22]General network error

    I am using oracle gateway (11.1) for sqlserver on Linux platform with Oracle Server 10g.
    I am getting following error when i run any select query:
    ORA-28500: connection from ORACLE to a non-Oracle system returned this message:
    [Oracle][ODBC SQL Server Driver][libssclient22]General network error. Check your network documentation.[Oracle][ODBC SQL Server Driver][libssclient22]ConnectionOpen (connect()).[Oracle][ODBC SQL Server Driver]Invalid connection string attribute
    ORA-02063: preceding 2 lines from SQLSERVER
    Another thing is, i have created a ODBC DSN named as "sqlserver" as well. This configuration works fine when "program" parameter is set to dg4odbc in Listener.ora. But with dg4msql, it gives error.
    Followings are the configuration files:
    initsqlserver.ora
    # HS init parameters
    HS_FDS_CONNECT_INFO=database_machine:1433//test_master
    HS_FDS_TRACE_LEVEL=OFF

    (CONNECT_DATA =

    )

    Hi,
    The error you get is because your HS_FDS_CONNECT_STRING is not correct:
    Be sure you can ping the SQL SERVER name from the Oracle Server,or use TCP/IP address
    Check the port, it is not necessary 1433.
    You can use the instance name insted of port:
    HS_FDS_CONNECT_STRING=server_ip_address/instance_name/database_name
    Be careful, in the LISTENER.ORA, you must specify the Gateway machine and not the SQL SERVER machine:
    sqlserver =
    (DESCRIPTION_LIST =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = Gateway_Machine )(PORT = 1522)) <====you must specify Oracle Gateway machine
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = PNPKEY))
    Idem for TNSNAMES.ORA:
    SQLSERVER =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = Gateway_Machine)(PORT = 1522))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SID = sqlserver)
    (HS = OK)

    Thanks

    Hi,
       You have customers who are running distributed transactions using a gateway which need to be rolled back.  However, the gateway has not been correctly configured for distributed transactions.  To roll back a transaction on the SQL*Server database a connection is made as the user defined in the parameter  HS_FDS_RECOVERY_ACCOUNT in the gateway init<sid>.ora file but this user has not been created in the SQL*Server database with the password defined in HS_FDS_RECOVERY_PWD. This user also needs to own the transaction log table.
    I assume you are using the Database Gateway for SQL*Server (DG4MSQL) as the Database Gateway for ODBC (DG4ODBC) doesn't support distributed transaction.
    If you have access to My Oracle Support have a look at this note -
    How to Setup DG4MSQL to Use Distributed Transactions (Doc ID 227011.1)
    Otherwise, check the Gateway documentation.

  • Oracle.xml.sql.OracleXMLSQLException: Expected name instead of .

    Hi,
    I'm using XDK in Tomcat to execute queries and get the XML result in the browser. I have written many queries but now I'm having problems in one of them.
    The error output that I see in my browser is this one:
    <ROOT>
    <ERROR>
    oracle.xml.sql.OracleXMLSQLException: Expected name instead of <.
    </ERROR>
    </ROOT>:
    This error message is known as XML-20126 but it's not documented in the XML Developer's Kit Programmer's Guide, so I don't know what to do.
    My XSQL query is the following:
    <ROOT connection="xxxx_read" xmlns:xsql="urn:oracle-xsql">
    <xsql:query>
    SELECT XMLAGG(XMLELEMENT("NODE",
    XMLELEMENT("name", b.nodename),
    (SELECT XMLAGG(XMLELEMENT("SERVICE",
    XMLATTRIBUTES(a.serviceabbr AS "type")
    ORDER BY a.serviceabbr
    FROM service a, serviceinstance c
    WHERE c.isdeleted='N'
    AND a.serviceid=c.serviceid
    AND c.nodeid=b.nodeid
    ORDER BY b.nodename
    ) AS "NODES"
    FROM node b
    WHERE b.isdeleted='N'
    </xsql:query>
    </ROOT>
    That query executes fine in sqlplus, where I can see the XML result.
    I think my problem could be related to the size of the XML output. In sqlplus, the output has around 38000 bytes size, which is nothing, so I don't really know why that should be a problem. Do you have any idea?
    Thanks for your help,
    David

    So it seems there is a problem in fact:
    XDB FUNCTION RESULTS ARE TRUNCATED WHEN USING XSQL
    *** 02/25/04 08:28 am ***
    Problem Description
    There appears to be a limit on the content or characters that XSQL pages

    i.name as "Name_van_de_test"))) as "Tests" from problem_xml i
    < /xsql:query>
    If the number of rows (or amount of data) in the table is low, the result
    appears okay. However, if the data returned is large the data appears to
    truncate giving xml parsing errors as if the xml returned is not well formed.
    In the testcase provided, the error is as follows :-

    And the workaround:
    ======================================================
    The only workaround we have is to get the Document generated using
    DBMS_XMLQUERY [with expanded entities].
    _==Start===
    create or replace procedure Query2XML(QueryString varchar2 default
    'select col1 from xml_tab where r_id = ?') IS
    XMLCtx number;
    myXML clob;
    myXMLLength number;
    BEGIN
    XMLCtx := DBMS_XMLQUERY.NEWCONTEXT(QueryString);
    myXML := DBMS_XMLQUERY.GETXML(XMLCtx);
    myXMLLength := DBMS_LOB.GETLENGTH(myXML);
    DBMS_XMLQUERY.CLOSECONTEXT(XMLCtx);
    END Query2XMLFile;
    _==Start===
    Currently, XDB uses a DOM based model for XSLT evaluation. It is not
    possible to support disable-output-escaping constructs through this
    evaluation. This might be supported in a future release when a different
    model is implemented.

  • Migrating from SQL Server to Oracle - Emulating SQL Server databases

    I want to offer Oracle connectivity from an ADO.NET application that was developed for SQL Server. The application accesses multiple databases, each having the same schema but each storing different data that is confidential to the users of each database. I’ve been reading up on Oracle but have not yet found a way to group tables, views, etc. in a way that would emulate the ‘databases’ of SQL Server.
    The application currently uses the SQL ‘CREATE DATABASE’ command to generate each database and then populates each with the appropriate tables. However, CREATE DATABASE appears to work differently with Oracle, creating a new instance rather than a new ‘internal database’. I’m wondering if CREATE TABLESPACE would give me the functionality I’m looking for, if it were subsequently possible to refer to a specific table within a specific tablespace.
    I guess it comes down to whether it’s possible to access specific groups of tables, views, etc. within Oracle (e.g. Groups A, B and C, each having relational tables T1, T2 and T3, and be able to access and update data within any specific table, say, B-T2), while also being able to limit access to any of the Groups.
    Would ODP.Net offer advantages over the System.Data.OracleClient for this architectural problem?
    Any thoughts on how best to proceed would be most welcome. Thanks in advance for any ideas you might have.

    Sorry for the delay closing-out this thread but I work from a rural location and we lost our internet service for the two-weeks prior to the holidays. Now back on-line so let's wrap-up.
    Oracle and SQLServer are now both being accessed from my ADO.Net application, so a big thanks to all who've helped me with this first use of the forum. Hopefully these final comments might help someone else in turn...
    In migrating from SQLServer to Oracle I initially found it hard to stop thinking about accessing multiple databases on a single dataserver and start thinking more about a single instance of a database that supports muliple users, any one of which can be assigned the same schema. While I had used the SQL CREATE command to produce miltiple databases within SQLServer, it serves a completely different purpose for Oracle, creating an entirely new instance that I did not require.
    Other differences that I ran in to included Oracle utilizing 'sequences' to autoincrement identities, whereas SQLServer lets you specify the identify while creating a table (here SQLServer may simplify declaration but Oracle's approach may be more powerful, e.g. if the same identity applies across multiple tables). Also ADO.NET command parameters use an '@' prefix in SQLServer but ':' for Oracle. But by-and-large few changes were required to my SQL to get up and running with Oracle (I found the 'Oracle Database SQL Reference' useful but no substitute for logging into Oracle and just trying each string in the 'SQL Commands' area).
    Clearly I'm no database expert and I've barely scratched the surface with Oracle, but after logging in through the 'Database Home Page' I've found Oracle to offer a very 'clean' and logical interface that made it easy to move around the application and get a 'feel' for its organization and what it can do before digging furhter into the documentation. The 'Object Browser' is also a great way to quickly view and edit your various tables, views, sequences, triggers, etc., and ditto your data. In short, I think I'm going to like Oracle.
    Thanks again and bye for now.

  • How to use Oracle 10G SQL features in OWB?

    We are using OWB repository 10.2.0.1.0 and OWB client 10.2.0.1.31. The Oracle version is 10 G (10.2.0.3.0). OWB is installed on Linux.
    Oracle 10G SQL offers
    1) Inserting Into a Table with Error Logging
    2) conditional_insert_clause, Specify the conditional_insert_clause to perform a conditional multitable insert.
    Did anyone use above features in OWB10G mapping?
    How do we use them?
    Thanks in advance.
    RI

    Hi,
    Just a thought on the multi-table insert. OWB generates multitable insert when one source is mapped to multiple targets only on the condition that after the splitter there should not be any OWB operator that can change the cardinality of the row-set coming out of the splitter (like joiners, filters, aggregators etc.)..
    Regarding the link, I was wondering where I could find a decent documentation of the shadow table and the DML Error Logging through OWB .. Thanks for the link.
    OWB error messages are basically Oracle Error Messages when you consider the code that gets deployed. Other than that VLD errors are sometimes mysterious and hard to debug.. Hope someone can give us more details on how to handle such VLD errors :)

  • Creating Database Link from Oracle to SQL Server

    I am trying to create a database link from Oracle to SQL Server, and the documentation is about as clear as mud to me. Can anyone send me clear instructions on exactly what I need to do? What needs to be in tnsnames.ora and listener.ora files? Is there anything other than those two files that needs to be set up? Do I set up an ODBC connection? Anything else? I want to execute queries against a SQL Server database and load data into Oracle database.
    Thanks so much,
    Susan

    These are the instructions from an old document I created. The steps are same for SQL Server and Sybase. Hope it helps.
    The 9i Transparent Gateway Software is in Oracle Software CD -> oracle9i database -> Custom -> Oracle Transparent Gateways
    The gateway can be installed on the same machine as the Oracle database or
    on the Sybase server or on a third machine as a stand-alone.
    We have installed the gateway software in one of oracle database
    servers in a separate oracle home.
    These are the steps involved in configuring a gateway to a Sybase database
    1.     Install Sybase client and Gateway software on the Gateway Server
    2.     Configure <initsidfile> in the Gateway Server's <gatewayhome>
         /u00/app/oracle/product/9.2.0/tg4sybs/admin/init<gatewaysid>.ora
    Sybase server and database information is required for this step.
    eg: HS_FDS_CONNECT_INFO=USTRUD01.uwd
    3.     Add an entry in listener.ora in <listnenerhome>
         (/u00/app/oracle/product/9.0.1/network/admin/listener.ora) for the <gatewaysid>
    4.     Edit the tnsnames file (/u00/app/oracle/product/9.0.1/network/admin/tnsnames.ora)
    to add an entry <tnsalias> for the <gatewaysid>
    5.     Create a database link to the Sybase database in the oracle database.
    The steps for creating the database link are
    a. create a login oracle_tgw in the sybase server
    b. add the user to the sybase database with the necessary privilege on the tables
    c. create the database link in the required oracle database using the command
         "create public database link <dblinkname> connect to oracle_tgw identified by password using 'tnsalias'; "
    6.     Restart the gateway listener.

  • Oracle and SQL Server connectivity

    Hello,
    Currently, we use Oracle as our enterprise database. I have a new requirement to develop a new application that must use MS SQL Server which must push and pull data from the Oracle database.
    What is the best technical solution to have this communication between Oracle and SQL Server.
    Thank you.

    if you are connecting to SQL Server from Oracle then yes HS through ODBC (check HS forum), but if you are pulling data from SQL server you have an option of DTS or "shared" server through ODBC, see MS documentation for that......you won't find it on oracle forum......

  • Convert Informix "with resume" feature in stored procedures to Oracle PL/SQL

    I am trying to convert an Informix stored procedure with the "return value with resume"
    feature into Oracle PL/SQL.
    So far, all I have gathered is that I need to use packages and reference cursors.
    What is hazy is that how and when does this value get returned? Is it on the execution of the FETCH statement or do I need to specify a RETURN statement.
    If anybody has any ideas or better yet any
    concrete examples, please email me.
    Thank you.

    This is a small example of the use of ref cursor , for further details see the Oracle documentation
    PL/SQL User's Guide and Reference
    Release 8.1.6
    A77069-01 . The stored procedure converter for informix (downloadable from Oracle Technology Network) does not unfortunately cover this situation.

  • Oracle 's SQL grammar

    I want to find documents about Oracle's SQL grammar (in BNF) in order to write a translator that translate SQL commands (initialy SELECT, INSERT, DELETE, UPDATE commands) from Oracle to MS SQL Server. Who can help me?

    You can't find them in one location all together.
    But you can try the following.
    In this location
    http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/appdev.102/b14261/langelems.htm#sthref2447
    you can find all PL/SQL language elements (SQL excluded).
    Now, download the whole Oracle 10g documentation and try to track down the directory on your hard disk where the htm-files for this location are stored:
    http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/appdev.102/b14261/img_text/
    It seems like all of them are are stored here, every language element in a htm-file of its own. It is not possible to open this directory in the browser.
    Perhaps this helps,

I dont no how to correct the packages already written, and how to solve problems, i use anonymous for seeing output. Dont no how to identify and fix the bug or requirement changes,. I am not sure where the code need changes. How to test properly for fixing the bugs, and how to change the logic, any1 help me out from this,... kindly give me good solution.. thnak you in advance

    Hi,
    you seem a little confused with your previous posts:

    The kind of question you are posting shows that you have little experience and you have been thrown in a sort of "training on the job" which is a bit scary to my opinion.
    Other users have already posted their opinion. Oracle documentation, available online is a good source of information. I've learnt a lot reading it.
    But what is really important it try to work in a rational way:
    a) understand business , business requirement and data model.
    b) organize your job in a "safe" way. Version control is mandatory!! You cannot avoid it.
    c) Be clean and organized in your coding. Spaghetti coding doesn't lead you anywhere. And never miss documenting your code.
    d) Whenever you have a question constantly check Oracle documentations, Oracle forums, internet. Having web access is a great advantage of our days, you have all you need on your fingertips.
    If I can give you my humble opinion, learning is a slow path. You don't become expert in one day. It's a matter of learning and experiencing day by day.
    One last thing. Writing message like this:

Your message looks confusing, a single paragraph, approximate English.
    Being clean and organized in your job is shown also in your messages. If you post your message in a clear and well written (and formatted) way you will have more chances to get an answer.

  • Need To Create a table in Sql Server and do some culculation into the table from Oracle and Sql

    Hello All,
    I'm moving a data from Oracle to Sql Server with ETL (80 tables with data) and i want to track the number of records that i moving on the daily basis , so i need to create a table in SQL Server, wilth 4 columns , Table name, OracleRowsCount, SqlRowCount,
    and Diff(OracleRowsCount - SqlRowCount) that will tell me the each table how many rows i have in Oracle, how many rows i have in SQL after ETL load, and different between them, something like that:
    Table Name  OracleRowsCount   SqlRowCount  Diff
    Customer                150                 150
    0
    Sales                      2000                1998
    2
    Devisions                 5                       5
    0
    (I can add alot of SQL Tasks and variables per each table but it not seems logicly to do that, i tryid to find a way to deal with that in vb but i didn't find)
    What the simplest way to do it ?
    Thank you
    Best Regards
    Daniel

    Hi Daniel,
    According to your description, what you want is an indicator to show whether all the rows are inserted to the destination table. To achieve your goal, you can add a Row Count Transformation following the OLE DB Destination, and redirect bad rows to the Row
    Count Transformation. This way, we can get the count of the bad rows without redirecting these rows. Since the row count value is stored in a variable, we can create another string type variable to retrieve the row count value from the variable used by the
    Row Count Transformation, and then use a Send Mail Task to send the row count value in an email message body. You can also insert the row count value to the SQL Server table through Execute SQL Task. Then, you can check whether bad rows were generated in the
    package by querying this table.
