Oracle data lookup (read) - Licensing query

Hi,
We are running SAP R/3 4.7 Enterprise with Oracle 9.2.0 as the backend database (on Windows Server 2003 OS).
Our Oracle license is embedded with SAP i.e., not acquired separately.
For business needs we intend to make read only queries to the backend database (Oracle database lookup) programmatically through Microsoft's SharePoint portal.
For the access methods, one option is to use Business Data Catalog - BDC of sharepoint which queries the Oracle database directly (xml).
Would appreciate comments on whether this is authorized or we need any additional Oracle component / license.
Thank you

Hi,

This should be raised with the SAP Portal, as per your scenario Oracle is not going to support you directly in any case. SAP is going to support you. You can raise SAP Service resquest and can check with them. anyway you'll not be allowed to get lisence seperatly for your existing SAP Database.

    I have already noted the restrictions mentioned in note 581312, particularly point 3 which speaks about SAP provided Oracle license

    Hi Jurjen / Hi Matt
    Thanks for the responses. These have been very helpful
    A couple of followup thoughts:
    1. Actually, the current need i am trying to fill is to read the 'reports to' relationship from SAP so as to fill the manager field/attribute in the Sharepoint User profile. I understand that the right way to do this is through standard interfaces of SAP like RFC/BAPI with the authorization checks in place but unfortunately, my sharepoint developer is unable to use RFC with Business Data Catalog (xml based). Says only a database query is possible. Perhaps he is wrong and i am trying to confirm this. If you have any thoughts on it, please do share.
    2.
    >If I remember correctly even read only access can muck up the db statistics and so have an adverse effect on the applications.
    So this means, database performance logs such as ST02 & ST04 may show incorrect information and it might also have an adverse impact on performance right? or anything else too.
    Many thanks

  • Query Execution/Elapsed Time and Oracle Data Blocks

    Hi,
    I have created 3 tables with one column only. As an example Table 1 below:
    SQL> create table T1 ( x char(2000));
    So 3 tables are created in this way i.e. T1,T2 and T3.
    T1 = in the default database tablespace of 8k (11g v11.1.0.6.0 - Production) (O.S=Windows).
    T2 = I created in a Tablespace with Blocksize 16k.
    T3 = I created in a Tablespace with Blocksize 4k. In the same Instance.
    Each table has approx. 500 rows (So, table sizes are same in all the cases to test Query execution time ). As these 3 tables are created under different data block sizes so the ALLOCATED no. of data blocks are different in all cases.
    T1  =   8k  = 256 Blocks =  00:00:04.76 (query execution time/elapsed time)
    T2  = 16k=121 Blocks =  00:00:04.64
    T3 =   4k =  490 Blocks =  00:00:04.91
    Table Access is FULL i.e. I have used select * from table_name; in all 3 cases. No Index nothing.
    My Question is why query execution time is nearly the same in all 3 cases because Oracle has to read all the data blocks in each case to fetch the records and there is a much difference in the allocated no. of blocks ???
    In 4k block size example, Oracle has to read just 121 blocks and it's taking nearly the same time as it's taking to read 490 blocks???
    This is just 1 example of different data blocks. I have around 40 tables in each block size tablespace and the result are nearly the same. It's very strange for me because there is a much difference in the no. of allocated blocks but execution time is almost the same, only difference in milliseconds.
    I'll highly appreciate the expert opinions.
    Bundle of thanks in advance.
    Best Regards,

    Hi Chris,
    No I'm not using separate databases, it's 8k database with non-standard blocksizes of 16k and 4k.
    Actually I wanted to test the Elapsed time of these 3 tables, so for that I tried to create the same size
    tables.
    And how I equalize these is like I have created one column table with char(2000).
    555 MB is the figure I wanted to use for these 3 tables ( no special figure, just to make it bigger than the
    RAM used for my db at the db startup to be sure of not retrieving the records from cache).
    so row size with overhead is 2006 * 290,000 rows = 581740000(bytes) / 1024 = 568105KB / 1024 = 555MB.
    Through this math calculation I thought It will be the total table size. So I Created the same no. of rows in 3 blocksizes.
    If it's wrong then what a mes because I was calculating tables sizes in the same way from the last few months.
    Can you please explain a little how you found out the tables sizes in different block sizes.Though I understood how you
    calculated size in MB from these 3 block sizes
    T8K =97177 BLOCKS=759MB *( 97177*8 = 777416KB / 1024 = 759MB )*
    T16K=41639 BLOCKS=650MB
    BT4K=293656 BLOCKS=1147MB
    For me it's new to calculate the size of a table. Can you please tell me then how many rows I can create in each of
    these 3 tables to make them equal in MB to test for elapsed time.
    Then I'll again run my test and put the results here. Because If I've wrongly calculated table sizes then there is no need to talk about elapsed time. First I must equalize the table sizes properly.
    SQL> select sum(bytes)/1024/1024 "Size in MB" from dba_segments> 2 where segment_name = 'T16K';
    Size in MB
    655
    Is above SQL is correct to calculate the size or is it the correct alternative way to your method of calculating the size??
    I created the same table again with everything same and the result is :
    SQL> select num_rows,blocks from user_tables where table_name = 'T16K';NUM_ROWS BLOCKS
    290000 41703
    64 more blocks are allocated this time so may be that's y it's showing total size of 655 instead of 650.
    Thanks alot for your help.

    http://stackoverflow.com/questions/14539489/oracle-date-parameter-query-not-working

  • Is it possible to retrieve data from an Oracle db with an LDAP query?

    Our application uses an LDAP query to retrieve data from Microsoft Active Directory. Is it also possible to retrieve data from an Oracle database with an LDAP query?

    if you have Oracle Internet Directory, you will retrieve with ldapsearch data, which are physically stored in the database. But to select * from emp where ename='SCOTT', it is probably not possible.
    At least I have never heard of such a product which translate ldap query in sql query. But feel free to write your own one in perl :-)

    Try to connect without tnsnames. So try the basic connection from SQLDeveloper.
    If it works, you have to verify your tnsnames.ora
    Are you th only person to have this connection problem or all users meet this error?
    Does this connection worked before, is it a new connection?
    What changes occured since the connection is out of service.

  • License for Oracle Data Guard

    Hi
    For a data guard solution, is the license including in the Oracle Data Guard package or we must buy additional license for the standby database ?
    Thanks.

    Hi
    I will do that.
    But i just wanted to know if a standby database means new license.
    I mean, when the primary database works, the standby database do nothing except get the archive redologs.
    And when the standby database is on, then the primary is down.
    So i didn't see why we'll need futher licences.

  • [solaris 8] Oracle 8.1.6 EE: no more data to read from socket

    Hi,
    I'm sorry for writing to this list, but it is the most related I could find.
    I installed Oracle 8.1.6 EE on a sparc 5 with solaris 8. I had to install the thread patches for solaris 8 because the emn0 process of oracle was dying every 30 minutes.
    After that, the DB seemed to work ok, but when running a heavy java process (jdbc),
    the process reports "java.sql.SQLException: No more data to read from socket".
    Have anyone experienced this kind of problem ?
    I decided to reinstall solaris 7... Could anyone help me ? comments ? suggestions ?
    Thanks in advance.
    Gabriel

    Reason: the ORACLE server process crashes (sometimes), and the result is the "empty"
    socket.

    scott --
    which jdbc versionare you using ??
    if not the 816sdk -- try it ...
    make sure you match up with the jdk version ...
    note: jdk 1.2 functionality is not in any of the orcl drivers
    yet.
    check out for this faq (3rd question -- i think) for more details
    on jdk 1.2 support :
    http://technet.oracle.com/tech/java/sqlj_jdbc/htdocs/jdbc_faq.htm
    in general -- this occurs due to several different conditions :
    verify that the connections string is correct :
    for thin -- the hostid:port:sid must match the listener you're
    trying to connect with -- and a tcp/ip connection on the server
    ust exist.
    for oci driver make sure the "tnsname" entry being specified
    exists and has the same information in its "entry" correct (i.e.
    matches the listener values)
    also make sure the listener and the orcl instance are started.
    also make sure you're using jdk 1.1.x with 8.1.5 or lower
    drivers.
    816sdk can be used with jdk 1.1 or 1.2 if you are using the
    correct jdbc driver version from otn to match the jdk version.
    only jdk 1.1.x functionality is available in the jdk 1.2 driver
    at this time.
    also make sure you're using a thin driver if in an applet.
    thin or oci in a servlet is ok if properly set up.
    without more info --
    i can't tell which of these "setup or condition" issues applies
    to your situation ...
    always provide :
    jdk details,
    applet vs. application vs. servlet,
    jdbc driver version number and type(thin/oci)
    also server version in all cases and if oci driver is being
    used -- the oracle client version,
    it's always better to provide too much detail with java
    issues than just an error message ...
    i hope this helps ...

  • 'No more data to read from socket' error connecting to Oracle 9i

    Hi,
    My Java app connecting to Oracle 9i gets an error: No more data to read from socket.
    Application host is running oraClient805 and JDK1.3.1_06 SE
    Connection string jdbc:oracle:thin:@myhost:1521:mysid worked fine connecting to the Oracle 8 version.
    I've checked tnsnames.ora, tried tnsping util to Ora 9i, it's OK. As well I could connect directly through the SQL Worksheet.
    Could anyone suggest what could be wrong or different to make a connection from Java app to Oracle 9i ?
    I was advised to upgrade the driver, but I am not sure what do I need. I have classes102, classes111, and classes12 in the %ORACLE_HOME%\jdbc\lib\ directory. Do I miss something?
    Thanks a lot.

    Well, lot's of things could be causing this. Off the top of my head, in rough order of likelihood:
    1) firewall - personal, on your box, or general, around the database, is reaping long-lived connections
    2) connection wrappers on the database - ditto
    3) your pooler is configured to terminate connections that are checked out of the pool for too long and you're exceeding that time for some operations
    4) your database or it's listener is crashing out from under you (and possibly being auto-restarted by the time you look at it).

  • How to read the output of 'tarantella license query' command?

    I'm trying to track my license usage (to better determine when to buy new licenses, and to track usage over time).
    When I issue the 'tarantella license query command, this is typical of the output I see:
    [root@sgdserver ~]# /opt/tarantella/bin/tarantella license query
    License usage at: Mon Feb 11 14:03:53 EST 2008
    Type                In use / Total
    Base                6      / 230
    UNIX                4      / 230
    Mainframe           0      / 230
    Windows             0      / 230
    AS/400              0      / 230
    [root@sgdserver ~]#What is the above saying? Is it saying that I am using 10 licenses out of my 230, or am I just using 6 licenses? In other words, do I add up the numbers or just use the highest one? Or do I just have to worry about the 'Base' license number?
    Thanks.

    The base license is the number of users that are logged into a webtop.
    From there you count then connectivity type.
    So you have 6 webtop licenses out of 230 consumed and of those 4 users have launched UNIX sessions out of 230 you have licensed.
    hope this helps.

  • Info on licensing issues of standby databases/Oracle Data Guard

    Hi All,
    Could anyone possibly give me some information on licensing issues of standby databases/Oracle Data Guard? Links to some electronic articles or journals might be useful. I am unable to find the appropriate info and need this quite urgently for my dissertation asap as my deadline is this approaching.
    Thanks in advance

    Paul Drake posted a reply to a similar question on the Oracle-L mailing list that pointed out that the License Agreement
    http://oraclestore.oracle.com/OA_HTML/ibeCCtpSctDspRte.jsp?media=os_local_license_agreement&section=11365&minisite=10021&respid=22372&grp=STORE&language=US
    states, in part,
    "Failover: Your license for the following programs, Oracle Database (Enterprise Edition, Standard Edition or Standard Edition One) and Oracle Internet Application Server (Enterprise Edition, Standard Edition, Standard Edition One or Java Edition) includes the right to run the licensed program(s) on an unlicensed spare computer in a failover environment for up to a total of ten separate days in any given calendar year. Any use beyond the right granted in the previous sentence must be licensed separately and the same license metric must be used when licensing the program(s)."
    which seems to open a bit of wiggle room depending on how the term "run" is defined. This is probably also an area where your Oracle sales rep may have a little more flexibility to negotiate

  • Poor MDX performance on F4 master data lookup

    Hi,
    <P>
    I've posted this to this forum as it didn't get much help in the BW 7.0 forum. I'm thinking it was too MDX oriented to get any help there. Hopefully someone has some ideas.
    <P>
    We have upgraded our BW system to 7.0 EHP1 SP6 from BW 3.5. There is substantial use of SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise XI 3.1 (BOXI) and also significant use of navigational attibutes. Everything works fine in 3.5 and we have worked through a number of performance problems in BW 7.0. We are using BOXI 3.1 SP1 but have tested with SP2 and it generates the same MDX. We do however have all the latest MDX related notes, including the composite note 1142664.
    <P>
    We have a number of "fat" queries that act as universes for BOXI and it is when BOXI sends a MDX statement that includes certain crossjoins with navigational attributes that things fall apart. This is an example of one that runs in about a minute in 3.5:
    <P>
    SELECT { [Measures]. [494GFZKQ2EHOMQEPILFPU9QMV], [Measures].[494GFZSELD3E5CY5OFI24BPCN], [Measures].[494GG07RNAAT6M1203MQOFMS7], [Measures]. [494GG0N4P7I87V3YBRRF8JK7R] } ON COLUMNS , NON EMPTY CROSSJOIN( CROSSJOIN( CROSSJOIN( CROSSJOIN( CROSSJOIN( [0MAT_SALES__ZPRODCAT]. [LEVEL01].MEMBERS, EXCEPT( { [0MAT_SALES__ZASS_GRP]. [LEVEL01].MEMBERS } , { { [0MAT_SALES__ZASS_GRP].[M5], [0MAT_SALES__ZASS_GRP].[M6] } } ) ), EXCEPT( { [0SALES_OFF]. [LEVEL01].MEMBERS } , { { [0SALES_OFF].[#] } } ) ), [0SALES_OFF__ZPLNTAREA].[LEVEL01].MEMBERS ), [0SALES_OFF__ZPLNTREGN]. [LEVEL01].MEMBERS ), [ZMFIFWEEK].[LEVEL01].MEMBERS ) DIMENSION PROPERTIES MEMBER_UNIQUE_NAME, MEMBER_NAME, MEMBER_CAPTION ON ROWS FROM [ZMSD01/ZMSD01_QBO_Q0010]
    <P>
    However in 7.0 there appear to be some master data lookups that are killing performance before we even get to the BW queries. Note that in RSRT terms this is prior to even getting the popup screen withe "display aggregate".
    <P>
    They were taking 700 seconds but now take about 150 seconds after an index was created on the ODS /BIC/AZOSDOR0300. From what I can see, the navigational attributes require BW to ask "what are the valid SIDs for SALES_OFF in this multiprovider". The odd thing is that BW 3.5 does no such query. It just hits the fact tables directly.
    <P>
    SELECT "SID" , "SALES_OFF" FROM ( SELECT "S0000"."SID","P0000"."SALES_OFF" FROM "/BI0/PSALES_OFF" "P0000" JOIN "/BI0/SSALES_OFF" "S0000" ON "P0000"."SALES_OFF" = "S0000"."SALES_OFF" WHERE "P0000"."OBJVERS" = 'A' AND "S0000"."SID" IN ( SELECT "D"."SID_0SALES_OFF" AS "SID" FROM "/BI0/D0PCA_C021" "D" ) UNION SELECT "S0000"."SID" ,"P0000"."SALES_OFF" FROM "/BI0/PSALES_OFF" "P0000" JOIN "/BI0/SSALES_OFF" "S0000" ON "P0000" . "SALES_OFF" = "S0000" . "SALES_OFF" = "S0000" . "SALES_OFF" WHERE "P0000"."OBJVERS" = 'A' AND "S0000"."SID" IN ( SELECT "D"."SID_0SALES_OFF" AS "SID" FROM "/BIC/DZBSDOR038" "D" ) UNION SELECT "S0000"."SID" ,"P0000"."SALES_OFF" FROM "/BI0/PSALES_OFF" "P0000" JOIN "/BI0/SSALES_OFF" "S0000" ON "P0000" . "SALES_OFF" = "S0000" . "SALES_OFF" WHERE "P0000"."OBJVERS" = 'A' AND "S0000"."SID" IN ( SELECT "D"."SID_0SALES_OFF" AS "SID" FROM "/BIC/DZBSDOR058" "D" ) UNION SELECT "S0000"."SID" ,"P0000"."SALES_OFF" FROM "/BI0/PSALES_OFF" "P0000" JOIN "/BI0/SSALES_OFF" "S0000" ON "P0000" . "SALES_OFF" = "S0000" . "SALES_OFF" WHERE "P0000"."OBJVERS" = 'A' AND "S0000"."SID" IN ( SELECT "D"."SID_0SALES_OFF" AS "SID" FROM "/BIC/DZBSDOR081" "D" ) UNION SELECT "S0000"."SID" ,"P0000"."SALES_OFF" FROM "/BI0/PSALES_OFF" "P0000" JOIN "/BI0/SSALES_OFF" "S0000" ON "P0000" . "SALES_OFF" = "S0000" . "SALES_OFF" WHERE "P0000"."OBJVERS" = 'A' AND "S0000"."SID" IN ( SELECT "D"."SID_0SALES_OFF" AS "SID" FROM "/BIC/DZBSDPAY016" "D" ) UNION SELECT "S0000"."SID" ,"P0000"."SALES_OFF" FROM "/BI0/PSALES_OFF" "P0000" JOIN "/BI0/SSALES_OFF" "S0000" ON "P0000" . "SALES_OFF" = "S0000" . "SALES_OFF" WHERE "P0000"."OBJVERS" = 'A' AND "P0000"."SALES_OFF" IN ( SELECT "O"."SALES_OFF" AS "KEY" FROM "/BIC/AZOSDOR0300" "O" ) ) ORDER BY "SALES_OFF" ASC
    <P>
    I had assumed this had something to do with BOXI - but I don't think this is a MDX specific problem, even though it's hard to test in RSRT as it's a query navigation. Also I assumed it might be something to do with the F4 master data lookup but that's not the case, because of course this "fat" query doesn't have a selection screen, just a small initial view and a large number of free characteristics. Still I set the characteristic settings not only to do lookups on the master data values and that made no difference. Nonetheless you can see in the MDXTEST trace that event 6001: F4: Read Data. Curiously this is an extra one that sits between event 40011: MDX Initialization and event 40010: MDX Execution.
    <P>
    I've tuned this query as much as I can from the Oracle perspective and checked the indexes and statistics. Also checked Oracle is perfectly tuned and parameterized as for 10.2.0.4 with the May 2010 patchset for AIX. But this query returns an estimated 56 million rows and runs an expensive UNION join on them - so no suprise that it's slow. As a point of interest changing it from UNION to UNION ALL cuts the time to 30 seconds. Don't think that helps me though, other than confirming that it is the sort which is expensive on 56m records.
    <P>
    Thinking that the UNORDER MDX statement might make a difference, I changed the MDX to the following but that didn't make any difference either.
    <P>
    SELECT { [Measures].[494GFZKQ2EHOMQEPILFPU9QMV], [Measures].[494GFZSELD3E5CY5OFI24BPCN], [Measures].[494GG07RNAAT6M1203MQOFMS7], [Measures].[494GG0N4P7I87V3YBRRF8JK7R] } ON COLUMNS ,
    NON EMPTY UNORDER( CROSSJOIN(
      UNORDER( CROSSJOIN(
        UNORDER( CROSSJOIN(
          UNORDER( CROSSJOIN(
            UNORDER( CROSSJOIN(
              [0MAT_SALES__ZPRODCAT].[LEVEL01].MEMBERS, EXCEPT(
                { [0MAT_SALES__ZASS_GRP].[LEVEL01].MEMBERS } , { { [0MAT_SALES__ZASS_GRP].[M5], [0MAT_SALES__ZASS_GRP].[M6] } }
            ) ), EXCEPT(
              { [0SALES_OFF].[LEVEL01].MEMBERS } , { { [0SALES_OFF].[#] } }
          ) ), [0SALES_OFF__ZPLNTAREA].[LEVEL01].MEMBERS
        ) ), [0SALES_OFF__ZPLNTREGN].[LEVEL01].MEMBERS
      ) ), [ZMFIFWEEK].[LEVEL01].MEMBERS
    DIMENSION PROPERTIES MEMBER_UNIQUE_NAME, MEMBER_NAME, MEMBER_CAPTION ON ROWS FROM [ZMSD01/ZMSD01_QBO_Q0010]
    <P>
    Does anyone know why BW 7.0 behaves differently in this respect and what I can do to resolve the problem? It is very difficult to make any changes to the universe or BEx query because there are thousands of Webi queries written over the top and the regression test would be very expensive.
    <P>
    Regards,
    <P>
    John

    Hi John,
    couple of comments:
    - first of all you posted it in the wrong forum. This belongs into the BW forum
    - MDX enhancements in regards to BusinessObjects are part of BW 7.01 SP05 - not just BW 7.0
    would suggest you post it in the BW forum
