Oracle Database 10G R2 Upgrade to 11G R2
Greetings All,
I am sitting with a peculiar situation and was hoping for some advice.
I currently support an Oracle 10G R2 installation at one of my customers. It is running on Red Hat Linux. I struggle quite a bit with the environment as my customer only commissions the Linux environs without an X environment. Having stated all this, it is my preference to upgrade the databases and schema I have to 11G and put them on Windows purely as it opens up administration to non-Unix personnel. The applications using the Oracle DBs are not very mission critical nor resource intensive so the performance loss by moving to Windows would not be a major consideration (although any comments on this approach will be read with interest).
So to cut a short story long, what would be my easiest upgrade option? I have limited Oracle experience (read: "plenty of tinkering but no training").
Any thought or advice?
TIA
Warren

Problem upgrading Apex 2.1 to 3.2.1 in Oracle Database 10g Express Edition
G'Day Apex gurus,
I installed Oracle Database 10g Express edition in my Windows XP PC which comes with Apex 2.1 with no problems. Then I wanted to upgrade Apex 2.1 to 3.2.1 (Currently Apex download in OTN) following the document below:
http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/application_express/html/3.1_and_xe.html
I went to the steps:
@apexins SYSAUX SYSAUX TEMP /i/
Then to change the password for the admin account run apxchpwd.sql and when prompted enter a password for the ADMIN account.
@apxchpwd
with not problems
Then I connected to SQL*Plus as SYS by:
sqlplus /nolog
CONNECT SYS as SYSDBA
Enter password: xxxxxxxxxxx
but when I tried to run:
@APEX_HOME/apex/apxldimg.sql APEX_HOME
where APEX_HOME is Apex3.2.1 in my case
SQL> @Apex3.2.1/apex/apxldimg.sql Apex3.2.1 (I get the messages below)

Can anyone help me in how to trouble shout this?
I tried to continue by following the steps document
@APEX_HOME/apex/apxxepwd.sql password
(where password is the password of the Application Express internal ADMIN account)
but when I tried to login in:
http://localhost:8080/apex/f?p=4550:1
when I type the credentials
system

nothing happens
or even If I try:
http://localhost:8080/apex/f?p=4550:10

nothing happens here too.
I appreciate any help
Kind regards
CarlosMy database version is 10.2.0.1.0 Oracle express.
Operating system is Windows Vista.
I started installing using the following commands.
@ C:\temp\apex\apexins.sql
it prompts me for the values of sysaux sysaux temp and c:\temp\apex\images\
If I supply the value for images the sqlplus window closes after scrolling a lot of info.
Enroute it also prompts me for a value for 9:
I don't know what the input shall be.
Then it again stops at enter value for version:
I used 3.2.1.0
The window scrols a while and closes.
later I changed the password and ran the command.
@c:\temp\apex\apxldimg.sql c:\temp
but no success with installation.
the output is as following.

AIX 6 and Oracle database 10g/11g
Dear All,
We are planning to upgrade our OS from AIX 5.3 to AIX 6.1 and infact have upgraded couple of servers to 6.
In light of cost saving/cutting, how can AIX 6 help reduce licensing fee for Oracle databases. In other words, we would like to look into possibilities of reducing Oracle database (10g/11g) licensing fee by upgrading OS to AIX 6.
Will the new feature like CPU virtualization be helpful in this regard? Are there any other features which could be worth looking into?
I would be grateful if any of you could shed some light on this.

Difference in select for update of - in Oracle Database 10g and 11g
Hi, I found out that Oracle Database 10g and 11g treat the following PL/SQL block differently (I am using scott schema for convenience):
DECLARE
v_ename bonus.ename%TYPE;
BEGIN
SELECT b.ename
INTO v_ename
FROM bonus b
JOIN emp e ON b.ename = e.ename
JOIN dept d ON d.deptno = e.deptno
WHERE b.ename = 'Scott'
FOR UPDATE OF b.ename;
END;
/While in 10g (10.2) this code ends successfully (well NO_DATA_FOUND exception is raised but that is expected), in 11g (11.2) it raises exception "column ambiguously defined". And that is definitely not expected. It seems like it does not take into account table alias because I found out that when I change the column in FOR UPDATE OF e.empno (also does not work) to e.mgr (which is unique) it starts working. So is this some error in 11g? Any thoughts?

It seems that my question was answered here - http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2736426/difference-in-select-for-update-of-in-oracle-database-10g-and-11gThe behaviour seems like it really is a bug and can be avoided using non-ANSI syntax. (It makes me wonder why Oracle maintains two query languages while dumb me thinks that this is just a preprocessor matter and query engine could be the same).

Hello everyone;
We are in the process of looking into upgrading from our current Oracle 9.1.0.8 to Oracle Database 10g Release 2 (10.2): Windows
We would like to download and install the 10.2.0.1 base release (Oracle Software). When I go on SAP Marketplace
https://websmp210.sap-ag.de/oracle-download and goto the (Software Download) section and click on
Oracle 10.2 Software (32-bit versions) to download I receive a error NO DATA AVAILABLE.
Is there another area to download the Oracle Software? or do I need to purchase a CD from SAP or can I download this base release straight from Oracle?
Thanks for your time and have a great day.Hello Pellegrino,
just download it from the SAP container for each product .. for example
-> Installations and Upgrades - Entry by Application Group -> SAP NetWeaver -> SAP NETWEAVER 7.0 -> Windows Server -> ORACLE

Running Oracle database 10g and 11g on same 5 RAC nodes
Hello Gurus,
Could any body throw light if I can install and sucessfully run Oracle database 10g and 11g on the same Oracle RAC installation setup.My setup is below
Number of nodes-5
OS- windows 2003 or RHEL5
storage- DELL EMC SAN
Clusterware- oracle version11g
File system-Automatic storage management(ASM)
After I successfully setup clusterware,ASM on the nodes,I would want to install 11g database on all 5 nodes .
Then Install 10g database on only 3 of the nodes using the same clusterware.
What are your views on the same.
Also FYI... as per metalink node 220970.1(RAC: Frequently Asked Questions) one can do such a setup.
what iam looking for is practical experience if anyone has implemented this in production system,if yes any issues faced and how tough it is to support.
Thanks,
ImtiyazYou could run an 11g database and 10g database on the same cluster as long as you use Clusterware 11g.
The administration aspect will drastically change according to the platform you run on. As of now, it appears you don't know whether it will be Linux or Windows.
It would be practical to support the same database release. -
I have a oracle database 10g version 10.1.0.3 on solaris 10 x86. I can't find the recent patches suitable to my database.
How can I upgrade it to 10.1.0.5 or higher (10.2.0.4)?

How to perform 10g RAC upgrade to 11g with Dataguard in place?
OS=LINUX
RDBMS=10.2.0.4
DG=PHYSICAL STANDBY
Below is my understanding
1)Install 11g CRS in NEW_CRS_HOME
2)Install 11g in NEW_ASM_HOME
3)Install 11g in NEW_RDBMS_HOME
4)Export the new NEW_ORACLE_HOME and start up the database with startup upgrade.
5) Run the catupgrade.sql script.
Are there any other steps involve?
In case I have to rollback then how to rollback CRS.Personally I would use DBUA instead of catupgrade.sql, but make sure you follow the upgrade documentation for pre-checks etc. You will also need to use netca to recreate the sqlnet listeners in the 11g homes and register with 11g CRS.
CRS is generally fairly quick to re-install and re-register databases, and this is cleaner than trying to restore OCR and VOTE disks etc. If you prefer to rollback be sure you backup the OCR and VOTE disks (e.g use dd), backup /etc/oracle, CRS_HOME, /etc/init* scripts etc.
The dataguard standby database should roll forward through the upgrade, but you will need to manually register the standby with 11gCRS. Make sure you have your DB and Log create_file_dest's set, as well as standby_file_management=auto. Personally I would manually recover the standby after the upgrade in case I need to use it to fallback.

Installation of Oracle Database 10g 10.2.0.3 on Windows 2003 Server
Hi Guys,
We have to install Oracle Database 10g 10.2.0.3 on Windows 2003.
I read on net, metalink and OTN as well and it seems there is no single 10.2.0.3 setup available to do so.
One has to upgrade from earlier version to 10.2.0.3.
Is that so? Is this the only way?
I mean if we want new and fresh 10.2.0.3 then don't we have installer for it?
In this case we will have to install 10.1.0.2 and then upgrade? (we have 10.1.0.2 installable with us)
And if at all that is the only path available then for 10.2.0.3 on Windows 32 bit - Patchset 5337014 i.e. p5337014_10203_WINNT.ZIP from metalink is the correct patch?
Thanks in advance!

Can we create new tablespace in Oracle Database 10g Express Edition?
Hi,
Can we create new tablespace in Oracle Database 10g Express Edition instead of using the default "users" tablespace provided?
Please advise.
Thank you.Correct. The sum of all user tablespaces is not allowed to exceed 4 GIG.
You could try shrinking your tablespaces. Theres a script called maxshrink on http://asktom.oracle.com which is useful for this.
You could compress your tables.
If you are storing lobs, you could consider storing them as bfiles.
Or upgrade to Oracle Standard Edition 1. Its not that expensive. -
1Z0-045: Oracle Database 10g: New Features for Oracle 8i OCPs
Hi,
I was looking for right reference book for the 1z0-045 upgrade certification. I could not find any reference book that is related to this certification. Only one book have found out on Amazon site, which is "OCP Oracle Database 10g: New Features for Administrators Exam Guide (Oracle Press) (Paperback)" published by McGraw Hill.
But this book does not show exem number 1z0-045 anywhere. So I am not sure, is it a right book to buy.
Please let me know if any one has any knowledge about that.
I appreciate for your information.
Thanks
AmitThe book you mention is for those individuals who are upgrading their 9i OCP to the 10g OCP. Since you are apparently upgrading from 8i OCP, there is possibly a gap in your learning. You might want to take a look at OCP Oracle9i Database: New Features for Administrators Exam Guide (Paperback) which explains the new features for Oracle 9i to someone coming from an 8i background. No additional exam would be needed in your case but this book may help to fill out your knowledge a bit. You could also take a look at http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10501_01/server.920/a96531/toc.htm if you would rather not buy an additional book.
