Oracle FLOAT(126) can't handle +/-1.79E+308 to but MS/MySQL/Postgres can
SQL Server, MySQL and Postgres can all have DOUBLE that is a 64bit floating point number holding the range -1.79E+308 to 1.79E+308. The Oracle docs say to use FLOAT(126) as DOUBLE, but it cannot handle this range, it only seems to cope somewhere around 1E+125
I've tested on both Oracle 10g and Oracle 10g Express.
How can I get the proper range for 64bit floating point numbers? What is the absolute maximum range an Oracle floating point number can handle? I've had the exact same issues with BINARY_DOUBLE not taking more than 1E+125

-~ in float(126) column
I have a column defined as float(126) in my oracle8i db table.
Some rows have "-~" value for this column.
Does this value signify something?
I need to select all the rows having this value under the float(126) column. How can I do that?From the Oracle 8 documentation....
"You can use number format models:
* In the TO_CHAR function to translate a value of NUMBER datatype to VARCHAR2 datatype
* In the TO_NUMBER function to translate a value of CHAR or VARCHAR2 datatype to NUMBER datatype
All number format models cause the number to be rounded to the specified number of significant digits. If a value has more significant digits to the left of the decimal place than are specified in the format, pound signs (#) replace the value. If a positive value is extremely large and cannot be represented in the specified format, then the infinity sign (~) replaces the value. Likewise, if a negative value is extremely small and cannot be represented by the specified format, then the negative infinity sign replaces the value (-~). This event typically occurs when you are using TO_CHAR with a restrictive number format string, causing a rounding operation. "
See: http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/A87860_01/doc/server.817/a85397/sql_elem.htm
In later versions of the database (not sure when exactly), you can specify "IS INFINITE" in your query to find these values. I am pretty sure this will not work in 8i. Hope this helps a bit...

What exactly is balance in Oracle Payroll. Can someone give an example pls
Hi
I am a newbie to Oracle Payroll. Could some one xplain what exactly is balance in Oracle Payroll. Can someone give an example pls. Is there any link which would be useful to clearly explain this.Results of Payroll run get accumulated in the Balances. The accumulation happens according to the dimension like ASGRUN holds the value of current payroll run, ASGYTD holds the cumulative value for the current financial year and gets reset at the beginning of the next financial year, ASGQTD holds the cumulative value for the current quarter and gets reset at the beginning of the next quarter etc.
You can see the values of the balances for different dimension after running the payroll.

What file format Oracle Database 11g can spool data w chinese characters?
Hi,
I have a batch job that spools data into a text file for further processing but now I have data that contains chinese characters.
From what I know text file (.txt) cannot support chinese characters.
Anyone has any idea what file format Oracle Database 11g can spool data with chinese characters?
Thank you!
Regards,
FelI'm not sure this can work with SQL*Plus in character mode on Windows DOS mode. But this should work with SQL Developer: see Re: How to display Chinese characters in Oracle?
I can also make this work with Linux:

Hi,
I have installed Oracle 11g database.
Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition Release 11.2.0.3.0 - 64bit Production
PL/SQL Release 11.2.0.3.0 - Production
CORE 11.2.0.3.0 Production
TNS for 64-bit Windows: Version 11.2.0.3.0 - Production
NLSRTL Version 11.2.0.3.0 - Production
I want to update the patch.
Oracle 11g database can we update patch directly from 11.2.0.3.0 to 11.2.0.4.0?
Is any impact on the database?
Kindly suggest,
Regards,
Sachin11.2.0.4 is nothing but a patchset of 11.2.0.3, in-place upgrade is allowed :
http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e23633/preup.htm#UPGRD12370
"You cannot install the new software into the same location for Oracle home as your current release, unless you are installing an Oracle Database 11g patchset release. For a patchset release, you can use the same Oracle Database 11g Oracle home."
And since it's a patchset, a direct upgrade is ok.
Lastly, yes, every upgrade has an impact (e.g. perf.), it has to be tested.

Oracle discoverer 9i can not running at windows 2003 server

When I upgrade from windows 2000 advance server to windows 2003 server the oracle discoverer 9i can not be open. When I open it there is a error "Failed to open document"
How to make it run smoothly at windows 2003 server?
Thank YouHi,
This is a bug in your version of Discoverer. There is a patch to make it work with windows 2003 or you can upgrade your Discoverer to a later version. The patch should be available from Oracle support. I don't know of anyway to make your version work with 2003.

Oracle Trigger - How can I capture and correct on the fly ORA-01847
Oracle Trigger - How can I capture and correct on the fly ORA-01847 day of month must be between 1.
I have a table that has a date column. Sometimes an invalid date is passed and I'd like to capture and initilize the incoming value to null and have it inserted without error. Currently I get ORA-01847 day of month must be between 1.
Example:
create table ep1
col_1 number,
col_2 date
Now if a user does the following, I want no error to occure but rather for the date value to be set to null and inserted.
insert into ep1 values('1', '41-JAN-13')
The insert may come from any client and I can't change the calling code hence can't used a precedure to replace the insert. I'm guessing there is some way to catch system level exceptions on the DB level. This doesn't need to be nice, it just needs to work.
Here is the question on experts exchange. I'm told there is no way, but there must be. After all the exception is on a DB system level and I would think one could extend or override these, or disable them.
http://www.experts-exchange.com/Database/Oracle/PL_SQL/Q_23045306.htmlSQL> declare
2 wrong_month exception;
3 pragma exception_init (wrong_month, -1843);
4 begin
5 begin
6 insert into emp (empno, hiredate)
7 values (2345,to_date('13/25/81','MM/DD/YY'));
8 exception
9 when wrong_month then
10 dbms_output.put_line('I caught the bad month');
11 insert into emp (empno, hiredate)
12 values (2345,null);
13 end;
14 end;
15 /
I caught the bad month
PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.

I have tried several times to install iTunes update 11.1.4 on my PC. I get a message saying that install was not successful and an error message of MSVCR80.dll not present, Error 7, (Windows error 126). I am told to reinstall iTunes, but nothing changes. What next? I've not had this problem with other updates requested by Apple.
I have also had the same problem with my Win 7 32 bit computer. I had great help from Apple techs in Montreal and Orlando for 2.5 hours. They helped me remove every trace of Apple products and clean the registry in two different ways. Each install gave the same problem! If Apple techs can't fix it (on some of our machines) then we are really in trouble. They promised to raise it with the "engineers" and get back to me with a solution. I am waiting and hoping. Otherwise maybe version 11.1.5 will have a fix ??

What are the tables Oracle EBS connector can connect to?
Hello,
Requirement
As part of the project requirement for Oracle EBS application, we have the concept of BUYER account (PO_AGENTS) and Supplier account (PO_VENDORS). When the account has to be disabled from FND_USER and HR foundation table, the account has to be disabled (or removed based on the requirement) from all linked tables "PO_VENDORS" and "PO_AGENTS".
Questions
1) Does the out of the box Oracle EBS connector handles removing users from the tables "PO_AGENTS" and "PO_VENDORS" apart from "FND_Users" and "HR foundation" table?
2) If no, what are the recommendations for achieving the above requirement?
Thank You!No, OOTB the connector will not revoke the user entry from tables like PO_AGENTS etc .. You can customize the connector to do that .
Explore the stored procedure which can revoke entries from the mentioned tables and wire it via a adapter .

Oracle Apps Server can NOT restart.
Hi OTN Experts,
I encountered a trouble, after I backuped my instance,then apps server can not be restarted. I have read several similar threads,but still didn't find my solution. Could you please give me some suggestions.
*<<<<<<<<Symptom>>>>>>>>>>>>*
My Steps: start DB listener > start DB > Try to Start Apps.
I didn't encounter error while start DB listener and DB server,but while using adstrtal.sh to start apps server,encounter error.

1. In site:http://becomeappsdba.blogspot.jp/2006/08/startup-shutdown-apps-services.html
It said,"+Order of StartUp of Services Should be First DB Listener, Database & then Application Tier Services+"
I just follow that..so what should be first, DB Server or DB listener? a little confused.
2. remotely,used SQLTools to connect instance,it told me:"*ORA-12537: TNS:connection closed*"
Could you please suggest next action plan.
Thanks

Oracle JDBC driver does not handle Java empty strings correctly
If you store a Java empty string in a VARCHAR column, then try to retrieve it,
you get back a null.
Can someone from Oracle JDBC development
explain why this is not a bug? An empty
string is not the same as a null.Hello!
Although all together different, but DATE type also behaves same way.
inserting createdate = NULL in database returns you blank on select query
inserting createdate= '' returns null on select. Correct me if i am wrong.
