Oracle in not responsing to connect requests via sqlplus
Hi,
I am trying to connect to oracle 10.2.0.3 on linux via sqlplus.
All the oracle process are up.
tnsping and ping are response OK.
I check the uptime, and it show:
01:58:21 up 3 days, 23:47, 1 user, load average: 0.09, 0.03, 0.01
THE PROBLEM IS :
Oracle is not responsing at all to any connect requests:
sqlplus xxx/yyy@prd
SQL*Plus: Release 10.2.0.3.0 - Production on Fri Feb 1 00:23:56 2008
Copyright (c) 1982, 2006, Oracle. All Rights Reserved.
Quit
I set the following parameters in the sqlnet.ora:
trace_level_client = 16
trace_file_client = client
trace_directory_client = /software/oracle/admin/prd/net_log
trace_unique_client = on
log_directory_client = /software/oracle/admin/prd/net_log/
trace_level_server = 16
trace_file_server = svr
trace_directory_server = /software/oracle/admin/prd/net_log/
trace_unique_server = on
log_file_server = svr
log_directory_server = /software/oracle/admin/prd/net_log/
I couldnt find any error in the trace files that had been generated.
Does one have any suggestion ?
Thanks.
Can you post the last 100 or so lines from a client trace that is hanging (before you kill the hanging login)?
The advice to check the listener log on the server is sound, as would be a look at the server's alert<sid>.log and an strace output of the attempt:
strace sqlplus xxx/yyy@prd
The advice to delete your spfile and increase PROCESSES is clearly unwarranted, since you have provided no indication that you are exceeding that resource limit. Furthermore you are not receiving "ORA-00020: maximum number of processes (%s) exceeded", which is what we would expect in such an eventuality.

An error occurred while establishing the connection:

can anyone help me out in this issue?
thanks and regards
DhaneshYou are attempting to connect to an Oracle instance using JDBC and you are receiving the following error.
java.sql.SQLException: Io exception:
The Network Adapter could not establish connection
SQLException: SQLState (null) vendor code (17002)
Any or all of the following conditions may also apply:
1) You are able to establish a SQL*Plus connection from the same
client to the same Oracle instance.
2) You are able to establish a JDBC OCI connection, but not a Thin
connection from the same client to the same Oracle instance.
3) The same JDBC application is able to connect from a different
client to the same Oracle instance.
4) The same behavior applies whether the initial JDBC connection
string specifies a hostname or an IP address.
Also
The Network Adapter exception is caused because:
1. The database host name or port number is wrong.
2. The database TNSListener has not been started. The TNSListener may be started with the lsnrctl utility.
Please let us know where is the actual problem , then we can help you out.

Connect problems via SQLPLUS and other tools
I have installed an Oracle 10g Express database on my computer. I'm able to start the database as well as listener, and also login to the database. However, while trying to connect via SQLPLUS or PL/SQL developer, I get the following error message: ORA-12154 TNS: could not resolve the connect identifier specified. I also did a tnsping, but got the following error message: TNS-03505 failed to resolve name. I suspect that these 2 messages are somehow related to the problem. I set the following msdos variables: ORACLE_HOME=C:\oraclexe\app\oracle\product\10.2.0\server. ORACLE_SID=XE. I also specified this in my registry. Also TNS_ADMIN is set to the following TNS_ADMIN=C:\oraclexe\app\oracle\product\10.2.0\server\NETWORK\ADMIN. On my computer I installed the XE client. I noticed that there are several tnsnames.ora and sqlnet.ora registered in several places.
I also have the Developer Suite installed on my computer but cannot access it. I think this is due to the aforementioned problem.
I would greatly appriciate advise in resolving this problem.You have several Oracle Home's, so you may be trying to get the tnsnames.ora file from another location. You could either declare the XE entry at all used tnsnames.ora files or you should be consistent with the sqlplus client you are invoking. After the PATH environment variable you may be invoking a sqlplus executable located elsewhere but the XE Oracle Home, so this sqlplus will try to resolve the tns alias at the Home where this was invoked from.
I suggest you to verify your environment variables and make sure your path environment points to the XE oracle home and either reset your environment variables for your current session or invoke sqlplus with absolute path.

ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified (sqlplus)
Hi All,
I don't know if this has ever been posted, but since I've spent a week figuring it out (no joke, a week), I thought I would post it so that no one else has to waste this much time.
"ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified" from what I've seen on this site is a major problem for a lot of people, but I did not find a reference to my specfic problem.
FYI--
My Database is called "ordidm"
userID: SYSMAN
password: p@ssw0rd
My specific issue was the following:
I can....
- Connect to the database via the client "admin assstant" GUI in Windows while supplying the userID and password using the "Database Authentication".
- Connect via sqlplus as "/as sysdba"
- "tnsping oraidm" passes works just fine.
I CANNOT....
- connect to oraidm at the dos prompt by using sqlplus, regardless of whether or not I supply all the user authentiocation information and db name on one line, or...if I just type "sqlplus" at the command prompt and then enter the userID and password when prompted. Every time I get the "ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified" error message.
Ready for this?? (some may have guessed this already) The problem is the "@" in my password. After looking closely at the trace logs, I noticed that one of the entries was...
[09-MAR-2009 08:23:12:921] nnftrne: Original name: ssw0rd
Remember that the format for connecting on one line at the dos prompt is
C:/> sqlplus SYSMAN/p@ssw0rd oraidm
or you can do the following...
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator.WIN2K3>sqlplus
SQL*Plus: Release 10.2.0.1.0 - Production on Mon Mar 9 09:08:50 2009

(BTW-I just started using the "scott" ID because from what I understand, changing the SYSMAN userID password is kind of a pain. Figured just using "scott" ID would be easier to test)
So of course what it's doing is counting everything after the first "@" as the database name...which of course it can't find in the tnsnames.ora file. Also, contrary to some other posts I found here and there, enclosing the userID and/or passowrd in quotes does not do any good. Apparently, even when using the 2nd method...in the background, the end result is it must pass the whole thing as one long string much like in the 1st method (as you will get the same truncated "Original Name" of "ssw0rd" in the log)
So...the question is, why does Oracle even allow "@" in the password if it will become an issue with sqlplus??? Also, if you can't (or shouldn't) use it, why isn't it documented somewhere? At the least I would expect the installer to at least warn you ahead of time that an "@" is not suggested. I don't remember it being there. Maybe it's just me and I'm just missing this info somewhere
I sincerely hope this saves someone else a week of their life. ;-)

Passwords can be from 1 to 30 characters.
The first character in an Oracle password must be a letter.
Only letters, numbers, and the symbols “#”, “_” and “$” are acceptable in a password.
And password must not be a reserved word (look into v$reserved_words).
And as You can see sysman password containt "@" - this is not allowed.

sqlplus username/password@oraidm
but in Your case @symbol already is in password.
Here can be used a small trick
sqlplus sysman/"p@ssw0rd"@oraid

alter user scott identidified by p@ssword
You will get error message (ORA-00922: missing or invalid option), but You can
alter user scott identified by "p@ssword" - and that will work.
These double quotes will allow to overide Oracle restrictions. -

Regards,
Srini -
Not able to connect REMOTE via Wi-fi on your PC ? I figured out why
I have read endless forum posts and spoken to Apple techs who could not help me at all on this. I felt like i was talking to snake oil salesmen at one point with the outlandish nonsense they were telling me.
Anyhow i have a pc and use Apple Remote to control itunes and for some reason every now and then, usually around the time of software updates remote would just stop working for no reason.
I try to connect to library and punch in the four number code but it wouldnt connect. Time and time again i try and nothing. Itunes is seeing the phone but wont connect the remote to it.
I just realized about ten minutes ago why. Blutooth.
I had turned on my Blutooth headset last night while in my car and when i got home had remote stop working. It didnt dawn on me til this morning that "hey the blutooth icon is on" and once i turned it off the **** thing connected almost instantly.
I have read so many posts from people that have had this problem and spoken for hours literally to tech support to no avail and this just makes me happy as **** to have figured this out.
Sorry if someone has already posted this and im just repeated but im just so freaking happy i didnt bother to look first hoping that i might be able to save someone some headaches like ive had.
Summary:
-Remote doesnt work and you have a PC
-Turn off Blutooth and it should work again
-Now smile and a take a deep cleansing breath "Handle: 784786

Not able to connect sqlplus in linux
Hi,
I am using Enterprise Linux 5. I am not able to connect database using sqlplus.
After entering sqlplus command, getting following error:
[ra10g@blue ~] sqlplus / as sysdba
/oracle/oa10g/10204/bin/sqlplus: Line 41: syntex error near unexpected token 'set'
/oracle/oa10g/10204/bin/sqlplus: Line 41: 'if ("$ORASID" == '') set ORASID="*"'
I had checked all the enviorment variables.
ORACLE_HOME = /oracle/oa10g/10204
ORASID = orcl
LD_LIBRARY_PATH = /oracle/oa10g/10204/lib:/lib:/usr/lib
Please give me any solution regarding this.
Thanks in advance.
Would appriciate your prompt response.
Regards,

Re:
may be some enviromnet variable setting problem
ty this
export ORACLE_HOME=/oracle/oa10g/10204
export Oracle_SID=orclIf you actually did this, then you will fail. The variable is ORACLE_SID and the variable name is case sensitive.
If the database was already created with the SID orcl, check whether the SID exists in oratab (command -> tail /etc/oratab) and then you can source the oraenv file as follows
. oraenv
orcl
Note that sourcing is using the dot (period) and space before command. If you do not know what "source a file" means in bash, I strongly encourage you to spend some time with the bash tutorial on the net. -
Typical resolution logic for client connection request (Oracle Database 11g)
Salam, hello everyone, I would know the process that oracle follows to connect a client to a database (local or remote connection) via this command : connect username/password[@connect_identifier].
Can someone help me with that?The first decision is whether the connect request includes a connection string or not. Examples:
This does,
connect [email protected]
An this doesn't,
connect /
Your question regarding "LOCAL env var" I think is referring to client environment variables? They are tested with decisions for TNS_ADMIN,ORACLE_SID, and ORACLE_HOME at several points. Remember that the client process may be running on a remote machine, or on the server machine from the same Oracle Home as the instance or different.
That should give you a good start. If it doesn't, post your email and I'll send you a full description. The usual route for contacting authors is through the publisher, but we can short-circuit the process here.
Don't worry about Mr Bakker thinking that we do not understand SQL*Net. He has not seen any context, and his constructive criticism is based in incomplete data. You will soon understand SQL*Net better than most.
Please remove the diagram. -
Can connect to local DB via SQLPlus but not via SQLDeveloper, all info incl
Have a database running on a new local Windows 7 Professional Machine with data, users, etc from an db import. Able to access database via sqlplus, run queries, etc. Cannot run from Oracle SQL Developer. Trying to use Connection Type Basic, Hostname localhost, port *1521*.
Using SID = xe I get:
Status: Failure -Test failed: Listener refused the connection with the following error: ORA-12518, TNS:listener could not hand off client connection The Connection descriptor used by the client was localhost:1521:xe
When I add a service in my listener.ora file for sid_name=xe and program_name=xe (which I include below), I get
ORA-12518, TNS:listener could not hand off client connection. The connection descriptor used by the client was localhost:1521:xe
Using Service name = xe I get:
Status: Failure -Test failed: Io exception: the Network Adapter could not establish the connection.
Here's every single piece of information I think you may possibly need to help me with the issue. [I've been trying to find the solution on these forums so I hope I haven't messed my settings up even more than they had been before.]

First, this is a forum of volunteers. There is no "urgent" here.
"Urgent" means one of two things -
1) people are dying, or
2) you have a customer-facing, revenue-producing production system that is down.
(And to get some perspective on the second case, keep the first in mind.)
For the first, you call whatever civil emergency service seems appropriate.
For the second, you open an SR with Oracle - which requires a paid-up support contract. For *them* to consider your problem "urgent", you will need to demonstrate that your problem falls under item #2. I seriously doubt your problem fits that criteria.
You don't have a support contract? Now you know the exact dollar figure that your company places on the data.
That said, you need to understand a few things about your specific problem,
First, port 1521 is only used by the listener to accept a connection request. Once it gets that request (and finds that it is for a service (sid) that it knows about, it will fork a server process and tell the requesting client that it can communicate with that server process over some other port .. a randomly chosen port number in the "high" range. It could be your vpn is blocking that other port, whereas your internal firewall is not.
But this is just an educated guess since I cannot find "can not connect remote oracle database over VPN" in any error message manual. If you had mentioned the VPN along with an actual oracle error message we could be much more precise in our diagnoses and recommendations.
---- edit 22 Sep
It occurred to me that I just assumed you were using the same client machine in both cases ... a laptop that you use both at work (local network) and home (vpn). If that assumption is false, there are probably problems with your tns setup on the home (vpn) machine.
But again, it would be much easier to help if you gave us an actual error message. -
